(34 reviews)

Best Price: $16.95 $10.77

The zany characters who sniffle, soar and shriek through this book will help kids understand the concept of such emotions as joy, disappointment, boredom and anger. "The Way I Feel" will also show kids how to express their feelings with words.

This delightful book is used in homes, classrooms, literacy programs and pediatric clinics across the country. "Finally we have a resource which teaches children how to articulate what they feel," wrote a health educator.

The imaginative illustrations and superbly crafted verses are sensitive and free of bias and slang.

  • Board book misses half the feelings

    By A2TVECOR0G1GSG on 2005-07-16
The regular hardcover version of this book is WONDERFUL. My five year old and I have been reading it together for two years, and now he loves to read it on his own.

THIS IS NOT THE FULL VERSION!!

We misplaced our well-worn Scholastic version, so I bought this board book. Today it arrived, and off the top of my head I can see that it's missing the sections on Thankful, Jealous, Bored, and Disappointed and Frustrated.

I can understand having an abridged board book version for younger kids that doesn't include these subtler feelings, but that fact should be made clear. It's not mentioned in the book itself, so perhaps Amazon doesn't know about it.

Needless to say, I'm disappointed and frustrated. I'll be returning this copy and ordering the full version.

  • Adorable and made my family laugh

    By A281NPSIMI1C2R on 2003-07-24
    "Feelings come and feelings go.
I never know what they'll be.
Silly or angry, happy or sad-
They're all a part of me!"

Have you ever had a day where you have been experiencing such a wide array of stressful emotions, you just need a good laugh? Well this book turned out to be quite healing when my husband found it and decided to read it to me. I was more than amused. He took great "glee" in saying I was definitely the girl with the ponytail on the top of her head. We also had a good laugh over:

"Angry is how I feel right now,
I shout with a mighty roar.
I mostly want to frown and growl
    and stomp upon the floor."

Jana Cain has beautifully illustrated the book in pastel shades. Each page reflects the emotions in the color you would imagine an emotion to be. The "angry page" is red while the "happy page" bursts with yellow from the sun shining down on a girl on a swing.

The emotions presented in words and pictures include: silly, scared, disappointed, happy, sad, angry, thankful, frustrated, shy, bored, excited, jealous, and proud.

This book was also created to encourage children to recognize their emotions. In the back of the book there is "a note to parents" showing how this book can be used to help children understand what circumstances make them feel happy, sad, jealous, and so on. You can then discuss the emotion and decide which action is best when you feel that emotion. "It is not okay to hit people or throw things, but it is okay to stomp your feet."

Jana Cain's family posed for the illustrations and enjoy swimming, biking, hanging out with friends and now understand all their emotions. Some day they are looking forward to traveling the world and experiencing their emotions in new places.

  • Great for helping little ones name their feelings

    By A2S73YPUTKDTKJ on 2005-11-15
My son was a late talker and this book really helped him identify the feelings he was having and see that they were OK. Great pictures and fun to read WITH FEELING!

  • WONDERFUL Book!

    By ABF5RIC15M8IW on 2003-01-28
This is my three year old's favorite book, and it has done a lot of good for him! He first took to it because of the fun artwork, and catchy rhymes. Since we have started reading about it, he's been talking about his feelings all the time, from saying things like "I'm so happy right now" to "Do you feel frustrated, mommy?", which is really suprising coming from him! We've been able to talk to him about other things now that he understands feelings better and what they mean. So I highly recommend this book to everyone, and am looking forward to her writing another one.

  • a revelation into children's feelings

    By on 2000-11-29
take it from a grandmother of 16--this is a great book for children. I read this book to the "group" (age range - 16 yrs. thru 9 months)over the Thanksgiving Holiday. What reactions from all (except the 9 month old). As I read and showed the pictures depicting the emotions, their facial expressions mimicked the pictures and they actually started talking about when & why they'd feel these certain ways. I also looked at Jaimie Lee's book, and felt there was too much going on on the pages which would be a distraction plus Cain's drawings outdid the Jaimie book. what a fantastic book for drawing out children's so often unspoken emotions.

  • Great intro to feelings!
    By A1EB6B8XFBI9WH on 2005-08-28
My two year old loves this book. In the first day we read it five times and he still asks for it every day. When I say that I am frustrated he will say "Just like in my book Mommy?" The wording is easy enough for his age, yet informative enough for years to come. The pages are beautifully illustrated and hold his attention. I would recommend this book for anyone trying to teach fellings to young people.

  • Great range of emotions!
    By A2CBW6ULK3LOUN on 2006-05-09
I love this book! It has a wide variety of emotions for my sons to identify with, beyond happy, sad and mad. Frustrated? You bet! Toddlers can really identify with this but it is rarely in books. The pictures really showed the feelings! This book was perfect for helping kids know how they feel and put a name to it. It also showed silly and angry as equal but different emotions with no negative conotations to being bored or mad .

  • Fun pictures, catchy rhymes
    By A2HOLM5I1ARX9J on 2007-01-14
My three-year old is learning about feelings in preschool and she LOVES this book, as do I. This book is a great intro to feelings and goes beyond the stock "happy, sad, and mad" into a wider range of emotions. The illustrations are cute (like the pointy toed fairy shoes on the swinging "happy" child and the odd eyeball hat on the "silly" child) and the rhymes are very catchy. The book is visually interesting -- the font and presentation of text on the page varies to match the mood. After reading the reviews below, I was disappointed to learn that this was actually an abridged version -- if you haven't been spoiled by the more complete text, you won't know what you're missing & you'll no doubt find this enjoyable.

  • Ideal for parent-child bonding

Strikingly illustrated, Janan Cain's The Way I Feel is a unique picturebook about human feelings, what they are and how the are all part of our human experience and makeup. The strong and expressive images showcase the superbly crafted verse text. Young readers will learn useful words, achieve a clearer understanding into the nature and spectrum of their feelings. The Way I Feel is ideal for parent-child bonding and highly recommended for family, school, and community libraries.

    By A31I3RHUR8EXPF on 2006-07-28
My Son and I both loved this book. Great pictures and is easy to read. Great explinations of the emotions that every one feels. I would recomend this book for anyone with a frustrated child that needs words for what they are feeling.

  • Original, informative, highly entertaining.
    By A14OJS0VWMOSWO on 2000-10-05
The Way I Feel will take young readers ages 2 to 8 through a picturebook excursion of all the different kinds of feelings, and show that feelings are neither good or bad, they just are. Strong, colorful, and expressive images by Janan Cain perfectly showcase her imaginative text introducing children to the words they need to name their feelings. The Way I Feel is an original, informative, highly entertaining and recommended picturebook for personal, school, and community library collections.

  • A Wonderful Parenting Tool
    By APT9I0LBHASX9 on 2000-12-02
This book helps children identify their feelings; and opens up a dialogue on how to deal with those feelings. Every illustraion comes to life! She made the images fun to look at, and easy for children to relate to. I hope to see more from this amazing author.

  • Emotions are Go!
    By A17R8BI1KKXBAO on 2004-05-12
I collect children's books and I usually buy them if they have artwork that I fall in love with. I definitely fell in love with the artwork in this book. It's so vibrant and fun! Then when I read it, I discovered how valuable this book could be for parents and teachers. Children need to learn that it is ok for them to have different emotions, and this book explores plenty of them. I have to admit, the day I bought this book, the "disappointed" page fit me perfectly...the same scenario and all. I just couldn't resist it. It's just a wonderful book!

  • the way i feel
    By on 2004-07-06
i liked this book because it showed many of the emotions I've had. This book had many colorful pictures. I liked the picture of the silly girl. It shows how a person can feel on different days. It showed me different ways to express myself when i feel like them.

  • "Best of Class"
    By on 2000-10-25
The author does a wonderful job of leading a child through the emotions of the day. My two year old was truly engaged by the illustrations. The subject of the book is important to child development as he or she begins to understand how emotions change. They can relate their own experiences with other children or even "grow-ups". Every child's bookshelf needs a copy.

  • Great book!
    By AVP1UTX9ZWO3D on 2000-12-15
What a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. I recently used the book to read to a group of 3rd grade brownies when we were working on a try-it badge. The girls loved the illustrations and related well to the feelings listed. It opened many discussions with the girls. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a GREAT book!! We bought several copies to give as gifts!

  • By far my two year old's favorite book!
    By A3IP86NFP1JJLR on 2001-09-14
At the early age of two, my daughter is already picky about what she likes read to her, and she consistently chooses "The Way I Feel." She loves to look at the pictures and enjoys the changes in voice that I use when reading about the many different emotions displayed in this truly beautiful book. I (and my daughter) highly recommend this book!

  • Wonderful, inspiring, emotional, colorful illustrations!
    By A8EJ03OTVIIQT on 2001-12-05
I saw this book recently at a neighborhood bookstore and I fell in love with the illustrations recently. (Another reviewer) said that these characters were "cold" but I completely disagree. They are full of life, exuberance and fun, perfect for young children to identify with and express how they feel.

This book is a delight and I'll be giving it to a few children for Christmas!

  • Preschool Teacher
    By A2AG1P0G99HG19 on 2004-03-27
I teach at a Preschool and this is my favorite book to read to my children. It has become one of their favorites as well. At least one child in my class requests to read this book every single day! I always remind them when they are in a conflict with one of their peers to talk about the way they feel and to tell the person how they feel. We also talk about positive ways to deal with negative feelings. I reinforce the idea that it is okay to feel angry as long as we can find something positive to do with our anger! Thank you Janan for this wonderful book!!!

  • Beautiful pictures, wonderful rhymes, important message
    By A5MK5JH2TZKM on 2006-11-20
My 2.5 year old loves this book. It has beautiful pictures! It has creative rhymes! It has an important message! - To help children understand and identify their own feelings. Also to remind their parents and other caregivers that children have all these feelings at one time or another, but are still learning how to express them. We need to help them with that task. For emotional intelligence, a happy home relationship between kids & parents and success in life.

  • Great Book!
    By A3M4EJY5U2NP56 on 2007-01-05
Wonderful book helps open dialogue about feelings and emotions. The pictures are colorful and interesting. They really help understand the emotion they illustrate. My son still talks about the book when he is trying to explain how he feels.

  • Love it!
    By on 2003-10-16
The beautiful illustrations are tons of fun & the words are wonderful! I brought this book for my 5 yr old who we adopted and 3 1/2 and has all sort of feelings he usually acts out on. The book gave us a way to discuss recognizing and articulating feelings, and how to deal with them in an appropriate ways.

  • A favorite
    By on 2004-01-18
My 2 1/2 year old loves this book! She also tries to use the feelings described in the book in context during play (she sat down with a pout the other day and said she was "boring"). It has really helped to give her the words to describe how she is feeling or just helps her understand these more complex concepts.

  • Great for 1st graders
    By A30NDAR7WYVQZJ on 2004-06-24
My first grade students love this book! I read this book the first week of school while talking about emotions and how we shared them at school. The art work is fun, colorful and just plain wonderful! My students have loved this book so much that my copy is dog-eared.

  • Helpful Book
    By A3PQT0PGYRC367 on 2007-06-07
This book is really well done. I enjoy reading the sing song words and the pictures are appropriate for the emotions. One day I told my daughter she couldn't have something and after she finished crying she she said she was "sad". I was totally impressed. Cute book, worth the buy.

  • Awesome!
    By A1NJKJ96LI18ZW on 2008-03-26
The book was exactly what I was looking for and it arrived just in time for me to teach my lesson. The students loved it and I will teach a lesson each year using this book. Extremely informative.

  • Wonderful book, the photos really help
    By A28QRMZMV1UCTX on 2008-08-03
I got this book to start teaching my 3 year old son about emotions, besides just happy and sad. I was really impressed by how much it has helped him. I think that the photos really help him understand what the feelings are, and then when I see him having that feeling later, I help him name it. Sometimes we go back and look at the book too. He loves it.

  • Really helps young children express feelings
    By A103UBR753E6LB on 2008-08-30
The book age on Amazon says 4-8, but my husband and I read this book to our 3-year-old and have done since she was 2. She loves the drawings and as another reviewer said, the pictures illustrate the feelings really well. Since we've been reading this book, she's started telling us when she's happy, excited, or angry. The expression of the third one (and sometimes the second one) helps diffuse tantrums before they get out of hand. I think this would have been a bigger challenge without this book.

  • Do you feel like I do?
    By AW5WTGK36NIC0 on 2008-09-16
I got this book on recommendation from my son's Occupational Therapist. He has Sensory Integration Disorder and doesn't understand alot of his feelings. So with this book and therapy and just being an understanding mom it is really helping.

The book itself is very colorful and the pictures are quite entertaining. With my younger son we just talk about the feeling and help put a look to the emotion.
