  • Excellent for "At-Your-Fingertips" Information!

    By A28AMMQCNN21CF on 2000-04-12
As a school counselor and a classroom teacher I found this a wonderful resource for finding quick information on the developmental stages children go through. Each staff member at our school was given a copy and we discussed it at staff meetings. Everyone seemed excited to have such an easy-to-read book that was packed with such valuable information. It has helped teachers to understand that often children are just behaving according to their developmental age! I'd recommend it to all educators and parents!

  • Age appropriate expectations

    By A7JQCVGOCHHHR on 1999-08-24
Organized by ages this book tells what you as a parent or teacher can expect of the child and what is too much to expect. As a Reading Specialist this book has been invaluable in planning for grades 1 through 5.

  • Practical and easy to use guide for parents and teachers

    By on 1999-05-22
This book is a good, practical guide to child development. It focuses on children at school, but gives honest social/emotional and cognitinve development guidelines. This would be useful to any parent wondering if their child is on target, as well as teachers.

  • A Must-Have For All Parents

    By on 2002-12-31
Did you ever wonder if your child were performing at his or her grade level, but had no place to start figuring it out? Did you ever wonder if your child's classroom activities and lessons made sense? If so, take a look at Yardsticks. A good friend of mine who is also a teacher recommended this book to me and it has proven to be an excellent resource. It gives, in very basic terms, the range of abilities for each year (ages 4-14), as well as suggesting classroom activities for teachers. This is an excellent resourse, which, while not exhaustive by any means, should be an excellent first step in working with your child through the years and speaking with teachers. It's a great quick reference, broken down by age, then learning categories with bullet points within each categories.

  • They do what?

Yardsticks is an excellent resource for teachers who get frustrated over their students behaviors. It works for parents also.

  • Excellent Book - I recommend to any parent or teacher!
    By A1KVPC8W7U51HH on 2007-05-23
This is just one incredible book. It is direct to the point with no flowery words, theories or philosphies. Each chapter is one age. The author creates about a half dozen catagories: physical, communication, etc. and provides bullets under each catagory of what to expect for the age. Each chapter is designed the same. I have found it to be right on the money! This should be a gift for every new parent!

  • Best age by age guide for teachers and first time parents
    By on 2003-07-08
This book has been great for me as a first parent. The book picks up where my common sense leaves off. I frequently refer to this book after my own child has displayed a particular behavior. Yardsticks has reassured me many times that my 4 year old son is normal...I have given this book too many friends as well as every teacher at my son's preschool. Because the book is broken down by age per chapter, it is very easy to read and undersatnd without feeling overwhelmed.
    A+

  • Second Copy needed
    By A27CHWACBT5PPN on 2006-10-04
The is the best resource for understanding why children act and learn the way they do as they mature and grow. I use it as a reference during parent-teacher conference to help parents understand why their student has specific strengths and challenges. I let my sister-in-law borrow it, and now need a second copy for myself too! As a teacher, I have found it quite valuable. Now as a parent, I look forward to referring to it for support too!

  • Great Book for Educators & Parents
    By A3O4D0GF3FISU6 on 2006-11-10
This is a great book for teachers and parents. It goes through a the predicted developmental milestones for each year, starting at pre-school. It's a great reference to have on file and a good way to keep oneself reminded of what children at every age should typically be like.

  • Helpful Guidelines to your child's behavior
    By A4AP69DLJISR3 on 2007-01-09
We were originally given this book when my stepson was a toddler and have found it useful enough that we now purchase it for friends. The chapters are set up by age so it is easy to jump to the age you wish to read about. First we found the information helpful to understand some of the behaviors and things my stepson would do. You know, those moments when you wonder, "what was he thinking?" Now we read the next year ahead so that we can get a feel for how he may behave or react to things. Since it is also a guide for teachers the book also gives suggestions on where your child's developments and interests may lie; including their social behavior with peers and adults. We would recommend this to book anyone interested in understanding their child's behavior.

  • developmentally appropriate teaching
    By ANIFP5Y6Q6HUX on 2007-01-16
This book has helped me put perspective on the students in my first grade class, as to what is appropriate for best teaching practices and how to most support their developmental levels.

  • Great resource
    By A2DIDH8XXR2F94 on 2007-02-16
I bought this book for a field experience. I am studying to be an elementary school teacher, and I found this book to be extremely helpful. It gives a detailed account of "normal" behavior that you would see at different grade levels, to give you ideas of where students will be physically, emotionally, etc. I also think this would be a great resource for parents, if they want to get an idea of what to expect as their kid gets older, or see what "everyone else" is doing at their child's level. The author is very explicit in explaining that this book is not saying "this is where your child MUST be" but instead says "based on research, this is what we have found is often true". I would reccomend this book to parents and teachers.

This book was recommended in the ASCD SmartBrief newsletter. It's a succinct description of physical, social, language, and cognitive characteristics at each age level, 4 - 14. It also discusses interests, abilities, and appropriate curriculum for each age level within the classroom. A very valuable resource for any educator as well as for parents wondering whether their children are getting an appropriate education or why certain skills may be emphasized in their child's classroom.

  • Valuable Resource
    By A5WQ2503S4RGL on 2007-03-19
"Yardsticks" is a helpful and valuable resource for any teacher, parent, or person who has and works with children. When in doubt or questioning the appropriateness and readiness of issues with children, then this is the book to look into. It breaks it down by age, appropriateness of tools and curriculum for each age and their readiness for anything. This is a must have for anyone who ever wondered about something when it came to their kids.
