Homeward Bound - The Incredible Journeyx$5.84
    (78 reviews)
Best Price: $5.84
This thrilling and thoroughly captivating theatrical hit from Disney has become an instant favorite with audiences of all ages. You'll lose your heart to Chance, a fun-loving American bulldog pup; Sassy, a hilarious Himalayan cat who lives up to her name; and Shadow, a wise old golden retriever -- all of whom express themselves with very familiar human voices! The adventure begins when the loving owners of these irresistible pets are forced to leave them in the temporary care of a friend who lives hundreds of miles away. But after several days, the worried animals begin to think their family must be in trouble, so they decide to head for home. On their incredible journey across the ruggedly beautiful Sierras, they encounter unexpected surprises from man, beast, and nature alike. It's an unforgettable story of love, courage, and devotion that will delight and inspire generations to come!
Walt Disney studios had previously adapted Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel The Incredible Journey in 1963, and the story proves just as durable in this popular 1993 version, in which the heroic trio of animals are given voices provided by Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, and Sally Field. They don't actually speak (like the clever critters in Babe), but we hear their "voices" as the lost household pets--Shadow the golden retriever, Chance the bulldog, and Sassy the cat--survive a harrowing series of adventures as they struggle to find their way home. Perfect entertainment for kids, this frequently clever movie offers an abundance of wildlife and beautiful location scenery, and the vocal performances by Ameche, Fox, and Field are surprisingly effective. A hit with parents and children alike, the film was followed by a sequel in 1996. --Jeff Shannon

A long tale of love, puppy love... By A1KAR9G699RM56 on 2004-08-31
Homeward Bound is the homely remake of the Incredible Journey, a tale of pet's going to extremes to find their family. Michael J. Fox lends his voice talents as Chance, the most recent pet addition to the family. Chance is also the narrator of the film, which adds to the overall good nature. The movie is humorous and an overall fun family film. However, the movie is about the struggle to maintain pet-owner love, so the movie is not all laughs and giggles. Good-natured yet emotionally endearing this movie will be liked by all.
For the whole family By A2ODBHT4URXVXQ on 2004-03-25
Based on The Incredible Journey, a true story, Disney adapted a animal adventure story into this marvelous film of a trio of animals who set off to find their way home. There are voice-overs that allow us to hear the animals communicating with each other, although there are no animation tricks, as in Babe, that make us want to believe the animals are `talking.' Perfect family movie for people of all ages. There's pathos, danger, adventure, fear, hope - and eventually (this is a Disney movie, after all) reunion. Don't miss it.
Yes, those ARE five golden stars By ASU3THM5ZUTUI on 2002-02-18
This is a Disney film based on Sheila Burford's book __The Incredible Journey__, about three household pets (specifically a bulldog named Chance, a Himalayan cat named Sassy, and a golden retriever named Shadow) who run away from a faraway ranch in order to find their way back to their home in San Francisco. Meanwhile, the owners (specifically 3 kids: a little brother named Jamie, a big brother named Peter, and a sister in the middle named Hope) call a search-and-rescue while at the same time trying to cope with a stepfather. As you may expect, this film eventually comes to a happy ending where everyone is reunited and all is well. Now, I'm 15 years old and I have loved this film ever since I saw it in the theater at the age of 6. I had many reasons why I loved it at the time--I thought it was funny, I thought it was exciting, and the ending made me cry (hey, don't snicker, I was six years old back then). But now I have a reason why this film has stood the test of time against much flashier and less "cute" movies that I see nowadays, and that's simply because...well, because it's really a good movie! Don't understand? Well, this film is so much more than just a movie with talking (sort of) animals that go on a journey in order to entertain little 6-year-olds. The pets aren't just animals; they exude the human personalities of their owners! Chance, owned by Jamie, is a mischievious pup who's always sticking his nose where it doesn't belong. Shadow, owned by Peter, is a wise old golden retriever who's always trying to keep Chance out of trouble. And Sassy, owned by Hope, is a fickle cat who always acts like she's sick of being stuck with her "brothers", if you know what I mean. And then there's the fact that even though the pets start out acting like siblings who drive each other crazy, they wind up going through thick and thin and actually realizing that they really love each other. Also, this film also has a subplot that turns out happy too; Peter, Hope, and Jamie finally learn to love their stepfather and actually call him "Dad". When the pets are back home in the end (face it, you KNEW it was going to happen) and they see the happy faces of their ecstatic owners, and EVERYONE is actually LOVING each other like a REAL family, Chance thinks with pride, "For the first time in my life, I was HOME." Never before have I heard such a profound statement in a Disney movie. Any idiot can entertain a 6-year-old by making him laugh, cry, and be excited. However, it takes the work of a genius to entertain a 6-year-old with a work that he will even love nine years later. See this film NOW! P.S. Don't see the sequel--it's completely insipid, and the pets have totally lost their human personalities in it.
I'm 17 & not afraid to admit I like this! By A1XJPGV4KPIQWM on 2001-10-26
yep, you heard me, 17. This is ANYTHING BUT just a movie for kids- only reason it's considered a kid's movie is cause it's from Disney & there's cats & dogs in it. This movie has some hillarious lines- my favorite being Chance saying "Go steal some parrige(or however its spelled) to the bears. And of course there's "Birdzilla Returns!"- lol. Yet there are some sad parts, like when Shadow falls into the ditch & says to Chance "You've learned everything you need to know, now you just need to know how to say goodbye". I will be very honest, that part and the ending left a lump in my throat. Yep, you heard me clearly- I AM A SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD BOY and this movie made me cry! I usually am not that emotional over movies. Anywayz, this movie has a GREAT message for teens believe it or not- It can show you to not make big deals over the little things & focus more on what's really important. As for the sequal, Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Franciso, well it's good, but not nearly as good as this one. This is a must for anyone who needs a good laugh or a good message about life.
UN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY By A1C8QD9C0YTR45 on 2003-04-02
For me it was an un incredible journey because i prefer the original version..The 1963 version was far superior to this one and where is it Disney. How about a DVD release. It came out on video years ago and then vanished. I have a great feeling for old Disney. I believe half of the material that comes out nowadays Uncle Walt would never have approved of and after his passing everything went downhill..

- A movie about a cat and two dogs on their way ....
     By on 1999-07-03
So you never thought that a movie about a cat and two dogs could be so fun and at the same time bring tears to your eyes - well guess again this does. The first time I saw it all alone. My eyes where all red but at the same time I could laugh so hard and load that I think the neighbours must have heard it. I wanted to show it to my friends and the same comment came again - " a cat and two dogs, cant we see something else?" Well lets say some have bought it and others had to go the kitchen at some point..and I dont think it was because they were thirsty. Michael J. Fox is the best for the voice of Chance and Sally Field is soo cool for the voice part of Sassy. I must atmid that I dont know who is the voice of Shodow but the triangle makes it all come true in Homeward Bound. Let me finish with sassy's line...CATS RULE AND DOGS RULE !!
- Great movie bad DVD

I love this movie it is funny and inventive. I hate to say but this DVD stinks. It has no extras, two channel sound, and the worst fullscreen only. Release a better version. NOW.
- The indelible journey
     By A2MJA2RSMS0K3I on 2001-09-22
Because it's indelibly etched upon my mind. I originally got this tape in a used goods store, and I was doubtful that I would like this film. After all, it was based on a book that I had read in school some 30 years ago, and on top of that, it was a remake. I find remakes are usually nowhere near as good as the originals, so I thought Disney was just trying to milk more money out of an old license. 'Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey' couldn't be that good.I couldn't have been more wrong. The used goods store that I got it at was run by a close friend of mine who gave this title to me for free, so I figured I had nothing to lose. I took it home and watched it. I was amazed. This movie has the most heart of any movie that I think I have ever seen, not to mention snappy (if not sappy) dialogue and some hair-raising moments when each animal faces a trial where you think that maybe, just maybe, they're not going to make it though. I think that everyone's favorite is Don Ameche as the older dog, Shadow. During the movie Shadow goes from disliking the new pup (Chance), to teaching him how to be a 'good' dog, to finally depending on him. The cat, Sassy, is there to make Chance's journey miserable by trying to demonstrate her favorite saying - "Cats rule and dogs drool". The pair of them are a great comedy team. As for Chance, he starts out as a loser with no real loyalty to anyone. What does he care? He's been in the pound ('the BAD place') for most of his short life. but during this film he grows into a dog with more understanding of the relationship between him and his human. There really is a lot more to be said about this movie, but I can guarantee that you will love it. I have watched it hundreds of times (no kidding!) and not once has the ending failed to bring tears to my eyes. And I'm a guy! As far as I'm concerned this is one of the very best movies ever made. Please don't miss it. Excellent.
- Heartwarming Film

Homeward Bound is the best one I've ever seen.
I think Walt must be jumping up and down in his grave for this one. It is a great heatwarming film. I love this movie.
I even watched it this morning, and I will again today.

I love this movie! Sally Field, Don Ameche, and Michael J. Fox lend their voices eprfectly to these animals. A touching, yet humorous story about family, friendship, and adventure, all told through the eyes of 2 dogs and a cat.
- great family entertainment

i love this movie as much as my children. we saw it two times in the theater and countless times at home.michael j fox is the perfect choice for the voice of chance the pup. i also love don ameche as shadow the older dog and sally field as sassy the cat.the movie is a great combination of humor and adventure, plus the scenery is just beautiful. even though i've watched the movie over and over,i always find myself crying at the ending.
- Incredible Journey, Disney

This is not a bad re-make, but the original 1963 Incredible Journey is a gem and wish it would come out in DVD. It is not a gimmicky.
- GREAT movie for anyone who likes animals!
     By on 2004-09-24
Homewardbound is such a great movie and I'd watch it over and over! If you like animals you'll love this movie! But, if your not into "talking" dogs you might not want to buy this. Otherwise it's great for anyone else!

THIS MOVIE IS THE ONLY MOVIE FROM MY CHILDHOOD THAT STILL JERKS AT MY HEART STRING AND BRINGS THAT LITTLE TEAR OF JOY TO MY EYE EVERYTIME I SEE IT. - WARM AND FUZZY FILM
     By A3LZGLA88K0LA0 on 2005-07-17
Only a heartless cynic would not be moved by the delightful HOMEWARD BOUND. A revisiting of an earlier Disney classic, this family film offers us Michael J. Fox, Don Ameche and Sally Field as the voices of the intrepid trio who venture out on a journey to go home, and the adventures they encounter. Robert Hays and Kim Griest are the parents, and Jean Smart has a nice turn as a friend who offers to babysit the animals when the family moves to San Francisco. The photography is beautiful and the animals are delightful; the vocal stars do a great job in elicting the characters of their respective pets. Field is especially fine as the fussy feline. Overall, a wonderful film for the whole family.
- Great movie, but no widescreen!
     By A16GGCDUETTTDB on 2006-07-06
Unforunately, this great movie got bad treatment when Disney decided to make a DVD of it full screen only. Why is it so hard to release a movie in its original aspect ratio?
Also, the original "Incredible Journey" can't even be found on DVD here. You have to buy it in Europe.
- For the Animal Lover in Us All
     By A2NLIB986TEESZ on 2006-10-12
I avoided this film at first because I felt they "cartoonized" Sheila Burnford's original novel and the original Disney movie, which I remember seeing on the weekly television series. But seen as a stand-alone this is a fun film about three animals trying to make their way back to their family. The animals are provided voice-over thoughts by Don Ameche (as elderly Shadow), Michael J. Fox (as Chance, the young, recently adopted dog who doesn't trust the humans not to abandon him), and Sally Field (as Sassy, the sarcastic Himilayan cat), and the story is more light than Burnford's original, although there are many touching moments as well. One BIG point off for Disney failing to release this film in letterbox. Apparently they just Don't Get It.
- Terrific, fun movie
     By A3LTOCL8G6E0GM on 2007-01-13
The only thing stopping a 5 star rating is the
"Full Screen" butchering. Its beyond belief this
classic isn't released in it original widescreen
format.
- Life breathed into trailer through music
     By on 1999-03-24
This soundtrack is one of Bruce Broughton's best yet! It has an exceptional universal theme of the need to want to get home. He has captured the omnipotent sense of adventure, the sense that some composers forget. This score is far superior to Mr. Broughton's score for "The Rescuers Down Under," followed by the great score for "Lost In Space," which I love. Mr. Broughton has a unique gift of being able to make each of his scores so, that you cannot tell what his other work is. He is diverse, and versatile in many respects. I admire that. I heard the theme from this movie in the "Pleasantville" film trailer, and it adds so much depth to the trailer it makes me wish that they would have used it in the actual film. But, seeing as though I also love the work of Randy Newman in that film, it is a useless request. I will always love this score! So!.....what next, Mr. Broughton? Kudos to you, sir!
- Great fun!
     By A3GR0SP9DNY63I on 2001-02-21
Another Disney winner. Wether or not you have children 'Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey' should be on your 'must see' list. You'd think it would be ridiculous to have cats and dogs "thinking" to each other but the result is entertainment at its best. All three animals (two dogs and a cat) are voiced by great talent, the dialog is snappy and the scenery is fabulous. Bruce Broughtons music adds perfect flavor to the visuals and the end result is a perfectly charming little movie which never fails to make you laugh and cry.
- A great movie for children and adults!
     By A1PFL7POIM7T60 on 2001-09-05
What an excellent movie! My two year old son loves "doggie movies" and has truly enjoyed watching this movie. I have found myself sitting watching the movie with him over and over again. It has great humor, a fun plot, and lovable characters. A definite must!
- One of the last great PG-rated movies
     By A25GVKJ8JYJCQH on 2004-07-14
I haven't seen Homeward Bound in almost a decade (I eventually lost the VHS tape our family bought a few months after it hit theaters), but I have so many fond memories of it as a teen. I absolutely adored this movie back then, and I still do now. Homeward Bound is wonderful for all audiences, and it isn't something parents would hate sitting through. I've been going through all the movies I loved when I was young, and nearly all of them are entertaining for everyone, and didn't try to dumb anything down for their target audience. It's a shame that there's been a somewhat recent shift in what's "suitable" even for a PG movie. PG movies are much more tame than they were from before 1996. In this day and age, it seems that all G and PG-rated movies are made for the 10 and under crowd, but back before 1996 so-called "children's" movies were enjoyable for everyone from the kids they was meant to entertain all the way up to the adults who plunked their kids down in front of them. Homeward Bound was one of the last great PG movies that everyone could love. It's exciting, adorable, and funny. These are some of my favorite "edgier" G and PG movies that don't insult children by being too tame: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie (1990), Beetlejuice (1988), Return to Oz (1985), Labyrinth (1986), and The Last Unicorn (1982).
- Extremely great movie!!!!

- Great Score
     By AFM2I8EQSK3F4 on 2005-05-04
I think that this soundtrack is very under-rated for how great it really is. I love this soundtrack so much, and the music goes so well with the movie. Although it is hard to find a copy at a reasonable price, you think Disney could re-release it. My favorite track on here is Reunited, which is at the end of the movie when the pets make it home.

My granddaughters , aged 3 and 4, watched this at least 10 times over a week....they loved it. Unfortunately for some, they particularly liked the term "thunderbutt" and made sure that everyone at daycare heard it, too.
Great movie!
- Fun movie

I feel sad when the children can't be with their pets anymore. But the pets, Sassy, Shadow and Chance, find their way home. Then I feel happy!
- All you need is.....your pets.

I highly recommend this movie to everyone especially to those who never kept a dog.The story is quite a fiction, but sounds real to people who have great feelings towards their pets and vice-versa.
If you watch this movie, you'll hug n' love thy pets even more...
So don't miss this film and above all, don't loose your pets!!
- The movie is better than the book
     By A1LDFYQM5Z9ULX on 2007-01-03
I read the book a long time after I saw the movie.I have to say I liked the movie better than the book.Maybe it's because I liked the actors. Michael J. Fox was so funny as Chance, like when he and Shadow were running away from the mountain lion,he says "I'm such a wimp. I'm running from a cat!", Shadow- "I won't tell, if you won't!", "I mean this isn't your ordinary housecat, I mean this is like your Arnold Schwarz-a-kitty!" ,and a whole bunch of others.I love that the director made the animals talk.In the old movie all you saw was the animals just sitting there getting attacked by bears or something, sure the old one was okay, but I'm happy that the animals talked and had a sense of humor. This movie is perfect for all ages.A great family movie!
- A Classic!
