Best Price: $8.68
Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh

Well worth the wait! By A2XGJ56VCFOKKZ on 2004-12-08
I was thinking of buying the dvd recently, and I'm glad I waited, because a two-disc special edition is coming out soon and I want that one! I made the mistake before of buying the "Top Gun" Soundtrack on cd BEFORE they rereleased it with new songs added on ("Sitting on the Dock of the Bay", "Great Balls of Fire" and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling") which I thought should have been included on the soundtrack the first time. It's about time this film gets the special features it deserves on dvd, with four music videos, which I'm assuming will be "Danger Zone", "Playing With The Boys", "Take My Breath Away" and "Heaven In Your Eyes". As I have never seen any of those music videos, I can't wait to see them for the first time.
"Top Gun" is one of my favorite 1980s films and the best Navy movie ever made. True, it's not an entirely realistic portrayal of Navy life, but this film probably did more to influence me to join the Navy and request to be assigned on an aircraft carrier than anything the Navy recruiter might have promised me. As a teenager, "Maverick" was my idol...the person I most wanted to be. I liked that he broke the rules, even if it got him in trouble. He was cool and cocky, just like the actual Navy pilots I did get to meet on the USS GW in the early 1990s. This film, of course is reflective of the time in which it was made...the Cold Warrior days of Reagan before glastnost and perestroika, though it's interesting how much this film must have influenced our current president's need to act all "Top Gun" himself and flying out the USS Abraham Lincoln in May 2003. "Top Gun" will probably always be remembered as the perfect cinematic reflection of the Reagan years and the film that brought super-stardom to Tom Cruise, who graduated out of the brat pack/"outsiders" band with the success of this film.
This film is immensely watchable and enjoyable. It has everything you could want in a motion picture experience: humor, action, melancholy drama, love scene, a rocking soundtrack and the inevitable uplifting message about not giving up in the face of difficulties, as the "Top Gun Anthem" undoubtedly cues you into. It's not a masterpiece that was Oscar worthy of a Best Picture nomination or anything like that, but on its own merits, this one is the top of its genre. Since its release, there have been many imitators and wannabes ("Days of Thunder", "Pearl Harbor", "Flight of the Intruder" to name a few), but none comes close to the thrill and adrenaline rush of this film. I'm looking forward to watching with the commentary track to hear what the Navy experts have to say, because I remember that this film caused an uptick in Navy recruitment and I'll be honest in admitting that my own enlistment in the Navy was strongly influenced by this film. Being on an aircraft carrier really is worth an enlistment and "Top Gun" is probably more accurate than any other Navy film I've seen. Highly recommended...and you'll want the special edition soundtrack as well, if you don't have that one yet. Take a ride into the danger zone.

The Top Gun of all the airplane flying movies By A2QRB6L1MCJ53G on 2000-05-03
I grew up in the 80's, but I didn't really watch Top Gun until a few years ago. I definitely saw what all the fuss was about when just about everybody mentioned Top Gun as one of their favorite movies of all time. To say the least it's a damn good movie. I couldn't find hardly any flaws in it. My favorite kind of movie is a good action movie with fast paced action and although most people consider Top Gun more of a drama movie, it also has a lot of top notch action and suspense in it as well. Cruise and McGillis do a great job acting and so did all the supporting cast. I can't think of many more sequences in any movie that are more awesome than when Maverick, Iceman, Viper and the rest of the flyers take to the air close to the end of the movie and do their job against their enemies. Top Gun also is great in the drama area. It seems like Cruise and McGillis are in a real relationship throughout the movie. Not to mention that the soundtrack to Top Gun couldn't have possibly been any better for the movie. If you like movies with fast paced action sequences with a little bit of drama added in, then Top Gun is one you can't afford to miss. It's one of the classics and one of the top 3 films of the eighties.
Top Gun - A Staple Of 80's Culture & Fun For All Audiences! By A2I7ZAB04Q0DML on 2003-11-14
From the opening moments, as dawn breaks over the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, to the critical moment when a pilot must choose to embrace his destiny and engage in a battle to save the day, Top Gun is a fun and exciting adventure of one man's quest for greatness. This is not a deep, philosophical movie by the stretch of anyone's imagination. It is pure fun, the hybrid of a script that is as slick and quick as the fighter jets that scream onto the screen again and again in the several action sequences of the movie. The story, set around the Miramara Fighter School in California, (affectionately referred to by fighter jocks as "Top Gun",) is based around the life of a rogue and rebellious pilot, "Maverick", (Tom Cruise) and his flight partner and friend, "Goose", (Anthony Edwards). When an aerial engagement goes wrong over the Pacific Ocean, Maverick saves the day, rescuing his wing man from an uncertain fate and coming face to face with the legendary MIG-28. Later, when his wingman resigns his position as their squadron leader, Maverick takes his place and is given a chance to attend "Top Gun" figher school, which has been a dream of his since he can remember. Maverick and Goose travel to Miramara, and on their first night there, Maverick meets Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood, (Kelly McGillis), the fighter-school's beautiful, saavy enagement and tactical instructor. He, of course, is not aware of this and he tries desperately to "pick her up" to win a bet with Goose. The following morning, he learns the truth, and begins to pursue her. As expected, she becomes the love interest in the movie. As their training progresses, Maverick runs headlong into rival pilot "Iceman" (Val Kilmer) and challenges the instructors of the school "Jester" (Michael Ironside) and "Viper" (Tom Skeritt), often pushing his luck and getting himself into trouble, while at the same time demonstrating his superior talent as a Tomcat pilot. In a tragic event, Maverick loses control of his jet and ejects, along with Goose, who is killed in the process. The remainder of the film focuses on Maverick's struggle to overcome the loss of Goose and his personal feelings of guilt for Goose's death. In addition, Maverick, whose father died as a fighter pilot, struggles with the reality that he is always second best to his old man, and is forced to recognize that his skills make him one of the best, despite the adversities in his life. The movie plays like an elaborate rock video, with a solid soundtrack featuring many top talents of that era. The flight sequences are impressive, especially for anyone who has a fascination with military aircraft. The story is predictable, as so many films in this genre are, but it in no way detracts from the enjoyment of the film. The characters are fun, though at times laughable, but definitely people that we care for by the end of the film. This movie was the breakout role for Tom Cruise, who lead a cast of up-and-coming talent like the aforementioned actors as well as small, supporting roles by mainstram Hollywood talents Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins. It was also one of the breakout films for director Tony Scott (brother of legendary director Ridley Scott), who went on to direct a number of other successful films including "Crimson Tide", "Days of Thunder" and "Enemy of the State." MACH TEN WITH YOUR HAIR ON FIRE IN THIS SPECIAL EDITION! By A1M9DQDGE07Q0U on 2004-12-08
"Top Gun" is the mach ten 80s mega hit that set theatre attendance on fire and established producer Jerry Bruckheimer and actor Tom Cruise as two of Hollywood's king size titans, behind and in front of the camera. All about a military flight school run for `the best of the best,' the film stars Cruise as Lt. Pete Maverick Mitchell. Pete's too sexy for his leather bomber jacket and he knows it. He's also short on pleasantries when it comes to wooing the femme fatale of the friendly skies, Charlotte `Charlie' Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). But high flying maneuvers between Pete and Charlie quickly move from the school room to the bedroom. Then tragedy strikes and Pete has to pull it together to prove himself as the hero of the hour. Val Kilmer costars as Pete's annoying and priggish rival for the top honors; Tom `Iceman' Kazanski. The cast also includes Tom Skeritt, Michael Ironside and Anthony Edwards.
What sets "Top Gun" apart from similar military film fare of the 80s is its ability to combine a sense of the miraculous within the gritty world of tougher than tough obstacles. The dog fight footage is thrilling and the plot moves effortlessly from drama, to melodrama, to action/adventure yarn on testosterone overdrive. There's even a shirtless eye candy volleyball tournament thrown in, with the guys doing their machismo best to ignite interest in the female population. However, the soundtrack album, which fueled the film's high octane performance at the box office, now seems to have dated at twice the rate of any other from the 80s - save `Dirty Dancing.' Kenny Loggins' `Playin' With The Boys' and Tina Marie's `Lead Me On' have that faint tinny echo of a forgotten pop culture where hoop earrings and big hair were synonymous with wacky-tacky red carpet glamour. Berlin's `Take My Breath Away' does anything but.
After the disastrous effort put forth on Paramount's `Footloose' special editon, I didn't hold out much hope for this transfer either. However, "Top Gun's" anamorphically enhanced transfer is remarkably clean and solid. Color saturation is very nicely rendered with velvety blacks and very pristine whites. Occasionally one will note a slight hint of film grain. There are no digital anomalies (edge enhancement, pixelization, shimmering of fine details) for a smooth video presentation that is sure to please. The audio has been remixed but continues to exhibit that dated 80s quality that is best left to nostalgia for a time when sound wasn't quite so integral to one's overall appreciation of movie culture. Extras include an audio commentary that is adequate at best. There's also a 6 part documentary that really should have been played as one big one, four music videos which will confound people as to why MTV became so big, and some storyboards, production materials and vintage featurettes. So set your DVD player to `cruise' control and get ready to set off for the wild blue yonder. "Top Gun" is a blast!

This is probably the best film every made about the navy. Navy pilots were brought to the forefront and characterized in this highly popular movie. There was a lot of dramatic license taken because a lot of scenes were far from being factual. That does not in any way take anything away from the enjoyment because it is highly entertaining and suspenseful. The soundtrack from this film is phenomenal, and is also a must buy. It is one you will never tire of watching time and time again.
- A disaster, and abomination in the world of art
     By A204ETWOV23HO4 on 2001-03-20
There are some directors who can take all the movie cliches and work them into a movie brilliantly. Those movies are always comedies, however, and are poking fun at directors and scriptwriters whose unceasing use of cliches brings the art of moviemaking down to a corrupt, base level. Top Gun is such a movie -filled throughout with cliché after cliché after cliché. I cannot remember anything in this movie that has a shred of originality in it. I give the director and writer credit for having discovered a way to create an entire film with only acting cliches, cinematic cliches, dialogue cliches, situation cliches, clothing cliches, stereotype cliches, relation cliches, you name it. Were this movie intended as a comedy, as it should be, it would be brilliant. Being that it is intended as a serious movie, however, I find the thing abhorrent and completely without merit, except the beautiful film work of the airplanes, which is itself yet another rehash of aerial filming cliches. Of all the really popular movies I don't like, this movie is always the first one I bring up when I am discussing just how horribly low, and how horribly in-search-of-a-dollar-and-damn-the-artistry that movie making can succumb. I can't think of any movie that has a greater ratio of pure-badness to sheer-popularity. It's like a Sheena Easton or Celine Dion CD."Take my breath away" as the main song? That should be proof enough for any serious thinking person to avoid this movie forever (except as study material for how to make a fully artless movie). Is that not the most bland, corporate produced song you've ever heard? No, wait - there was that God-awful Bryan Adams song in "Robin Hood", too. This movie is simply proof that, if you write something really dumb, truly senseless, cliché-ridden, and have it acted really poorly, but have fast planes and a few flag waving moments, then bovine unthinking America will willingly burst their collective lungs running as fast as they can to give you money for it. Perhaps this movie should get five stars for being such a wonderful and obvious critique of how completely bland and tasteless the American movie-going public actually is. Except, of course, that the makers (as I mentioned) obviously weren't making a social critique with this movie (Americans will not pay money to be led in thought). The creators were simply tuned-in very well to what stupid people are willing to pay far too much money, and thus created, quite ironically I say, a movie with nothing in it that speaks of actually being creative. If you're a person with a pre-adolescent sense of what love relationships are, an undeveloped sense of right and wrong, and/or an elementary-school level of ability to hold relationships with friends, then you will likely think the romance in this is great, and that the revenge part of it are great. I hate this movie. I think I hate this movie more than any other movie out there (although there are worse-made films - Plan 9 from Mars comes to mind). I hate this movie so much for two reasons: 1) nothing in it is creative or original or thought out or interesting, 2) that fact that it is so popular speaks to me of how low the culture in my beloved country truly is. Now don't get me wrong - it's a heck of an enjoyable film, and very entertaining if you can stop your brain and your soul from being appalled. Please feel free to enjoy it, but please, people, stop calling it a good film, or "the best film", or that it "speaks so well about relationships and friendships" and realize that as an artistic creation, this is one of the most abominable films because of its absolute lack of integrity.
- I demand re-release of this dvd.
     By AOI9FEN4XKMFC on 2000-01-28
4:3 ratio screen is very good transfer. However, wide-screen isn't really wide screen. it's a 4:3 screen chopped off from top and bottom. in other word, instead of having a whole theatrical picture, what you get is picture that's been chopped up both vertical and horizontally. what we are seeing is only 1/3 of what's filmed, which is even smaller than 4:3. somebody cheated big time from paramount. setup menu is false leading. I want to see entire wing span on F-14! It does make huge difference on impact in fighting scene. movie this good must be done right. and while at it, make it a anamorphic enhanced.

I own the VHS version and now the DVD. The flying scenes are among the best I've ever seen in any movie. If you have a DVD player in your home theatre system with surround-sound, don't miss out on this action packed movie. The sounds are incredible! I've watched this movie 30 times and still haven't grown tired of it!
- A big thanks to Paramount for selling out....,
     By A3RXEC0IF3NFHI on 2007-08-22
If you haven't heard the reason why this won't be released it's this:Without going into a huge amount of detail,Microsoft paid Paramount/Dreamworks 150 million dollars to go HD-DVD exclusive with absolutely no support for Blu-ray in the near future even though BD is outselling HD-DVD 2 to 1.That now means that any Paramount Blu-rays that are listed for pre-order on Amazon are now null...So basically Paramount is in Bill Gates pocket right now and will remain there for at least the next 18 months.Well, all I can say is that Paramount has lost a customer in me and my guess is that they will regret their decision eventually in lost profits and since many are very critical of their short-sightedness including Michael Bay and Steven Speilberg (who now won't let Paramount release any of his films in HD-DVD)....So thanks again Paramount.
- A Classic film, a disappointing DVD
     By ASSWCE5URWUN on 1999-12-10
This has to be one of the best films of all time. The air sequences are fantastic, the relationships between characters are excellently played out, the story overall superb and it's got the right music at the right times. The film gets 5 stars. However, when we choose to buy a film, we choose between two formats. The DVD should have extra features otherwise it is a waste of a format. I realise this is an older movie, but I'm sure they could have added something. Hence 3 stars. Buy it if you love the film, avoid it if you get annoyed (like I do) at DVD's without at least 1 or 2 features.
- THE LONG AWAITED SPECIAL EDITION!!!

Wow, its finally here. I remember this is the first DVD I ever bought back about 6 years ago when there were only a hand full of DVD's available. After everything started coming out with extreme loaded features, I wondered when I would get to see a Top Gun special features DVD. ITS HERE!!! I was a little disappointed by Amazon's description because it looks like there may not be many extra interviews with Tom Cruise. Anyways, its still worth the purchase.
- Steven Burke - Grow up!
     By A1EJS7MZKSA0QG on 2007-08-24
To the person who uses a review feature to complain about Paramount dropping Blu-Ray -- GROW UP! Go complain to Fox, Disney and Sony for not supporting HD DVD, or stop being a complete hypocrite! Sony is the one that brought on this fiasco of a format war, trying to strong-arm the consumer into their overpriced technology. Go cry somewhere else.
Better yet, go play with your PS3. Oh, I forget, Sony forgot to develop any decent games for it.
- Great movie
     By A18I6EW67T4B2A on 2007-09-08
A great movie being made available in it's finest presentation.
Surround sound effects are amazing, and the picture quality is awesome, even for a movie this old. Combat scenes really come to life, and you can see things in the background super clearly. For example papers on the board when the guys are waiting around to take a shower.
Shame people gotta vote bad for the movie just cause it's HD DVD exclusive.
I am a high def enthusiast and love watching everything I can in HD. I chose the HD DVD format for it's price, picture, interactivity, and the fact that players can be upgraded via the ethernet port.
All these Blu Ray babies crying, really need to get a life. Paramount, Dreamworks seen the light and seen that there are 3 to 1 HD DVD players over Blu Ray players in American households. Consumers are going to buy what is affordable and movie studios are going to go where they can make the most profit. Also, it is more profitable to make an HD DVD disc over a Blu Ray disc, as HD DVD uses similar technolgy shared with DVD.
It's been noted that the BD Java code needed to write Blu Ray disc is alot more complicated than the Microsoft HDi code used to writing HD DVD. In turn it makes HD DVD have much more features and come out with less bugs than Blu Ray. This makes HD DVD more profitable for the simple reason that studios don't have to pay programers to learn a new code for making movies.
Plus do you really think that Sony didn't grease Disney's pocket to go exclusive with Blu Ray?
Bottom line is technology is made for consumers and Sony has always tried to make it proprietary for them. Examples, mini disc, umd, memory stick, betamax, atrac3 (music format) and blu ray. Look at all the failed formats Sony has tried to push onto consumers that have all failed. Did you really think it would be different with Blu Ray?
- Top Gun
     By A1GBWH9L47FU82 on 2000-04-09
This movie is an awesome hit from director Tony Scott (also directed Beverly Hills Cop, Enemy of the State, and much more) dense with fun and excitement that will keep you FLYING for as long as you like. Tom Cruise (Days of Thunder, Jerry Maguire, etc.) stars as hotshot fighter jet pilot "Maverick" Pete Mitchell, who is elected with his partner "Goose" (Anthony Edwards) to enter the Navy's very competitive "Top Gun" program, where many comparible opponents challenge him to win the top rank, including "Iceman" Tom Kusansky (Val Kilmer) and "Slider" (Russ Rossovich). Stars Kelly McGillis as Mitchell's girlfriend, with appearances by Michael Ironside, Clarence Gilyard Jr., Meg Ryan (as Goose's wife), and Tim Robbins. A great action film.
- If you were born after the 80's and hate this movie, your review doesn't count
     By A2L3V95G0VYJVE on 2006-04-23
This is an 80s movie... a great 80s movie. Special effects were not as great then as they are now so don't expect them to be. Tom Cruise was not the same as he is now. He was perfect for the role. Don't even bring up Katie Holmes... that is not relevant. I can't believe people are writing bad reviews... don't listen to these people!!!
- Widescreen format is a joke
     By on 2000-06-22
The widescreen version of this movie, is actually just the full screen version with the top and bottom replaced with black bars. This means even more is cropped from the movie, and you actually see even LESS than the full screen. This is fraudulent, and the video and sound quality are mediocre. It's a real shoddy job for such a good movie.
- Ugh!

- Awesome movie - mediocre DVD
     By A1NG5AJDXR445B on 2003-02-28
The movie is terrific. The sound is spectacular. But both the non-anamorphic widescreen and fullscreen pictures were full of defects, which appear to me to be from the poor quality film print that was used to make the digital transfer. Scratches and dust particles were more than just noticeable; they were annoying. I love this movie and have made it part of my collection, however if you are expecting a DVD that you can use to show off your new home theater, you should probably pick another.
- OK3
     By A3AOHH9QG33BUW on 2005-02-19
Top Gun never claims to have epic scope, emotional gravitas, or a deep plot. I imagine that those who criticize this movie for its supposed shortcomings also look upon the Three Stooges with disgust for not exploring the depth of Moe's antagonistic relationship with Curly. The fact is that only about 10% of films released in general circulation attempt to have the depth of a Citizen Kane or Godfather. Among the other 90%, Top Gun is the best of the best.
Top Gun's obvious strength is the aerial visuals. Not since perhaps Howard Hughes' Jet Pilot has there been such an ambitious attempt to capture the look and feel of high performance flight. The F-14's photogenic qualities combine with Tony Scott's signature backlighting to create a terrific sense of energy and screen presence for the Grumman bird. The tactical realism may suffer, but the tight spacing and resulting packed frames of the ACM sequqnces are uniquely energetic and fast-paced. It is a shame that this may be the last time that anyone goes to the expense and hassle of using real film to capture such manuevers. The footage still compares favorably to state of the art CGI 20 years after its release.
The non-flying scenes are remarkable only for the collection of young talent that would eventually drive box office returns for a good part of the '90s. But the greatest compliment I could give the plot and acting is that they don't detract from the pacing and cohesiveness of a visually-driven movie.
*RE: Review Title- OK3 is the best grade possible for US Navy pilots performing carrier landings.
- Details of Blu-ray Special Collector's Edition due out July 29th, 2008
     By A1K94LXX833JTT on 2008-06-08
Top Gun is the kind of movie that can really benefit from hi-def treatment, with thrilling fighter jet acrobatics and vast shots of earth, sea, sky, and much smaller but still big enough things like aircraft carriers. The filmmakers took great care to achieve realism in some of its technical aspects while letting the plot fly high in typical Hollywood manner. The result is not only a solid mainstream blockbuster, but even for many who flinch at its implausibilities and plot cliches it qualifies as a guilty pleasure.
Tom Cruise is "Maverick," a hot shot Navy fighter pilot with attitude, haunted by the mysterious fate of his father, a Navy pilot shot down over Southeast Asia. Called up to the elite "Top Gun" Navy fighter pilots school, Maverick displays both his outstanding flying prowess and his character flaws, pulling off brave and foolhardy stunts (that would end the career of real fighter pilots), failing to be a team player, and wooing a beautiful woman (Kelly McGillis) who turns out to be one of his instructors. Then a tragic event causes him to lose his nerve. About to give up, and losing the girl, he learns the true fate of his father. Will he live up to his father's example or wash out?
Not everyone likes Tom Cruise (I think he's always been a fine actor), but even his detractors ought to admit he was well suited to this role, easily projecting an attractive but immature cockiness. The flight scenes are great fun, done to popular 80s rock that, with more romantic tunes like "Take My Breath Away," made the soundtrack a top seller. The plot cliches are cliches because they usually work, and they're effectively enough played out here.
The new Top Gun Blu-ray Special Collector's Edition will be full of special features from the 2004 2-disc standard definition Special Collector's Edition:
-- audio commentary by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Tony Scott, screenwriter Jack Epps Jr., and Top Gun veterans Captain Mike Galpin (also flew for the movie), retired Admiral Pete Pettigrew and Vice Admiral Mike McCabe

The Best of the Best featurette, about the real US Navy Fighter Weapons School, appears to be new to Region 1, but was included in the 2004 Special Collector's Edition in other regions.
The film will be in its original 2.35:1 widescreen, at 1080p. The sound will be English Dolby TrueHD 5.1, English DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1, and optional subtitles in English, English for the deaf and hard of hearing, French, Spanish, or Portuguese.
This movie was already released in HD at 1080p, so we should expect the new Blu-ray to be at least as good as that release. The video for the HD was generally praised, especially in comparison to the standard DVD, with new sharpness and detail, better and more saturated though not spectacular color, minor grain in some shots that was due to the original film grain, and some minor dust specs. The sound was also generally well received for a movie of its age, with lots of rear speaker activity and booming bass.
Looks like this should be a fine DVD, if you like the movie.

This is one of my favorite movies of all times. I think it is action packed and funny as well. Normally I don't watch action movies but I remembered the movie from when I was a young child and watched it a few years ago and it just stuck. I love it, Tom Cruise is AWESOME!

I have read quite a few poor reviews from this movie from people who are unable to occasionally shut off their brains and just enjoy an exciting action/adventure with some element of love story. "Top Gun" is one of my favorite 80's films. Director Tony Scott is a genius, and it appears to run in the family (his brother is Ridley Scott of Blade Runner fame). Stunning aerial sequences, amazing cinematography, a rocking musical score and good acting combine to make this a fun, exciting film -- as long as you don't try to analyze it. Yes, the plot is simple and predictable, yes there are numerous goofs and continuity errors in the film (you won't notice if you're not looking for these). Huge at the box office in the 80's (I was there!), this is the film that made Tom Cruise's career. If you see this, I recommend seeing it on DVD with a large screen and good sound system, as it will blow your socks off. On a regular TV screen with poor speakers, this film loses alot of impact. Bring a date :-).

Ok the movie is so great... I liked the story that includes friendship, love and challange... the soundtrack is great as well. But what really bothers me is that this DVD has no extra's what so ever!!!!If you love this movie, you better wait for another DVD edition to enjoy the extra's!
- Great Movie, Terrible DVD!

While this movie is one of my all time favorites and a must for everybody's DVD library, there are NO special features! No 'Making of the movie', no 'deleted scenes', no commentary. How can such a great movie be put on a DVD without any special features? I'm hoping there will be a re-release of the DVD that will be much better!
- I Love this Movie

I have to admit I love Top Gun. I'm a young man that is considering the military and I was a military kid growing up. This isn't the best or most realistic military movie ever made, but it' one of the funniest.Maverick(Tom Cruise) and his navigator Goose(Anthony Edwards) get the Navy pilots dream, a chance to go to Top Gun. It's at Top Gun that Maverick falls for one of his instructors Charly.(Kelly McGillis)Also at Top Gun Maverick is battling for the honor of top pilot against IceMan(Val Kilmer) Will Maverick stop being so cocky and fly like to his potential. Will he keep the girl? You'll just have to watch the movie. Tom Cruise is fantastic. He does an awesome job playing Maverick. I've had the chance to spend a lot of time around pilots, and so many are like his character. This movie reminds me a lot of being with my dad on the base. Pilots are full of so much b.s. and are such hot shots. Cruise displays it on screen perfectly. Anthony Edwards is great also. Goose is one of my all-time favorite movie characters. He's so loveable and goofy. A lot of pilots and navigators are like him too. I hate what happens to him in the movie, and I must admit it is hard to fight the tears. Kelly McGillis is hot. She is beautiful in the movie. Her carear would have been so much better if she had kept herself looking the way she did in this movie. I like'd her charcter Charly. She does a good job. I liked Val Kilmer. He plays the nemisis pilot great. He plays the macho b.s. pilot hotshot well. His charcter is a little more believable than Cruise's, but not nearly as fun. It's one of Val's better movies. Top Gun is a fantastic movie. I've never met anyone that didn't like it. It's got an all-star cast, great comedey, great one liners, a fantastic soundtrack, action, romance, and much more. A great family film. A great guy film. Some people have even called it a chick flick before. You'll have fun with Top Gun.

Quite possibly the most blatantly homoerotic film made that didn't involve Joel Schumacher, "Top Gun" is a constant comparison of genital size, interrupted by moments of bad dialogue and stilted acting. It lacks anything remotely resembling subtlety or intelligent scripting, opting instead for a lame, convoluted plot, obviously forced emotion, and love scenes completely devoid of any romance or eroticism. How any post-pubescent human being can enjoy this grand whizzing contest is beyond me.
- A full throttle experience.

I am going to skip the review of the movie, which I will asume you already like and go straight to what I feel might interest you the most, this specific DVD edition.
From the cover to the serigraphy on the disc (silver plated letters and a full color scene from the movie) this DVD shows the great quality elements and care that conforms it.
This is a double disc edition which in the first disc includes the movie in its new video transfer and sound mix, 4 video clips of that great soundtrack (Kenny Loggins "Danger Zone", Loverboy "Heaven in your eyes", Berlin "Take my breath away" and Harold Faltermeyer "Main Theme" instrumental, all this in a fullscreen Dolby Pro-logic transfer) a commentary with the producer, the director and with the navy assessors of the film which is very interesting if you like to know how they shoot that specific scene or why the aircraft made that specific move. The second disc include a gallery, a multi-angle storyboard, a 6-part documentary on the making of the film an a small interview with Tom Cruise among other tidbits.
Video: The movie looks amazing with a sepia and bluish palette that just stands out the sky, the sea and the rocky landscape that appear so often in the training-dogfight sequences. You can notice very few artifacts and you can tell they made a great job at cleaning and restoring this transfer, it might be a little dark at times but must of the time the shadows and light are well balanced. If you have a DVD player with progressive scan you will tell the difference right away against earlier DVD editions.
Sound: Now we get to the core and creme of this edition. This got to be one of the greatest 6.1 mixes (1 center speaker, 2 frontal speakers, 2 rear surround speakers, 1 back surround speaker and the subwoofer) I have ever heard in a while (Mmm except maybe the LOTR trilogy), everything from the music to the roar of the engines it precisely located in each speaker of your home theater, not to much rear not to much front, just the perfect balance, you can hear the dialogue crisp and clear and when the F-14's flyby prepare to make your speakers work at its fullest, specially your subwoofer (watch out your dishware because your house its going to rumble).
If you have a DTS capable receiver this should be your ONLY choice to watch this movie and if you do have that back surround speaker this mix it's going to use it a LOT. From the beginning when you see the aircraft moving slowly on the carrier deck you can hear the controller talking on the radio and that sound comes from the surround back speaker exclusively while Kenny Loggins voice comes from the center and the engines from the fronts, surround and sub.
This is highly recommended acquisition for any serious fan of Top Gun and for any fan of dogfights and war theme films.
A plus, this DVD makes for a superb demo for showcasing your home theater to your friends.
So just push play and let Maverick and Goose take you for a high-octane ride!.

Let me start this review stating that USUALLY, I do not agree with the movie nominationis for the Oscar awards. If you usually do, then don't waste your time reading this. I decide whether or not I like a movie with a couple of different criteria. First of all, did it entertain me? I like to be entertained by a movie. Second, did it make me laugh, cry, or some other emotion? I like a movie that elicits emotion from me. I liked Top Gun when it first came out because I had a boyfriend in the navy at the time who was an air traffic controller on an aircraft carrier. I watched it whenever I needed to feel close to him. He liked the movie as well. Top Gun entertained me. I have watched it well over 200 times in the last 20 some odd years. I have worn out a VHS and one DVD. The movie just made me feel alive and feel good. I like it when a movie does this for me. Call me crazy, but if I'm going to pay for a movie, I don't require absolute reality. In fact, a little escape without the use of mind altering substances, is a pretty good thing.
- For everyone
