It's the craziest mix-up ever! Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell dazzle the screen in this buoyant and screwball comedy of memory-making and memory-faking. One of Hollywood's most dynamic screen pairs, Hawn and Russell make the most of every hilarious situation in this delightful riches-to-rags romance that's perfect entertainment for anyone who appreciates a great practical joke. Hawn is Joanna Stayton, the pampered wife of a pretentious, yacht-owning socialite. When their boat gets stuck for repairs, Joanna employs carpenter Dean Proffitt (Russell) to improve her closet space. But when Dean asks to be paid, he's blatantly turned down by the "nothing is ever good enough for me" Joanna. So when Joanna falls overboard and gets a bad case of amnesia, Dean takes advantage of the situation and, in a stroke of retributive genius, tells her that she's his wife and the mother of hisfour unruly children!

Real-life couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn star in this enjoyable 1987 comedy by Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman) about an imperious heiress (Hawn) who loses her memory after a boating accident and is identified as the wife of a handyman (Russell). Russell's character brings her "home" to his messy house and unruly kids, and the laughs follow as the aristocratic Hawn tries fitting in. Marshall delivers the comic goods, the leads are entertaining (Russell needs to do more comedy), and the supporting cast is made up of happily familiar faces, including Roddy McDowall, Edward Herrmann, and Marshall favorite Hector Elizondo in an unbilled bit. --Tom Keogh MPN: MGMD906566D - UPC: 027616656629

This movie is reminiscent of classic comedies of the 60's. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have amazing chemistry, but so many funny moments you will laugh out loud. Goldie learning how to be a homemaker is priceless, and she does the physical comedy so well. This movie flows continuously from beginning to end. It does not lag in any part. It is a keeper, and a good addition to any collection.

  • The funniest Goldie Hawn movie I have ever seen...

    By A281NPSIMI1C2R on 2001-07-25
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell bring their real-life chemistry to this movie. It should however be rated R for all the sparks flying all over the place!

While I enjoyed this movie, I do not recommend it for kids of any age! A few scenes are a bit much and they go a bit overboard on some issues. A la Goldie bending over in a very revealing bathing suit or the kids talking about issues far above their age level.

There are some hysterically funny scenes in which I almost cried from laughing so much.

To understand why it is SO funny, you just have to imagine how a rich woman would feel if she was dropped off in the worst hell she could imagine.

The basic story is that Joanna Stayton (Goldie Hawn) is a demanding and pampered wife who stops off in a tiny Oregon town. She employs carpenter Dean Proffitt (who doesn't make any profit...), to revamp her yacht closets. When he completes the job, Dean asks to be paid and is told the job is not good enough (she wants cedar and he made them in oak!) and therefore he must "eat" the costs.

At a convenient moment, Joanna tosses Dean (Kurt Russell) overboard along with his tools and work belt. Then, Joanna falls overboard later when looking for her wedding ring and gets amnesia.

Dean finds a way for her to "pay up" for his carpentry work and the result is a hillarious story even a feminist would have to laugh at! The reason we don't feel sorry for Joanna is because she was so mean to Dean and didn't pay him for his work when he needed the money for his family.

This movie has the best last scene of any movie I have ever seen! No lies. I adore the ending.

The reason I like some movies so much is that they take items from the start of the movie and weave then so nicely into other parts of the story line.

Similar to "Captain Ron" in humor, but this was way more funny! I guess I didn't appreciate the swearing and other items that they threw in here and there, but the overall story was a hoot! This movie could have been a family movie if they had taken out various aspects.

The kids in the movie are a wild bunch to start with and change throughout the movie. Parents will relate well to this movie. However, I didn't like how Joanna treated the teacher although we can just say she was true to her character in that part of the movie.

One of the funniest movies I have ever seen.

  • Funny and Entertaining

    By A2AOZQ3WTNVVOK on 2004-11-11
Imagine Goldie Hawn as a stuck-up millionaire boating along the coast in her yacht. She has an obnoxiously wimpy husband played by Edward Herrmann and a mother who would have been a perfect fit as Mrs. Howell on "Gilligan's Island." While she is lording over the crew she decides that she needs her closet remodeled and asks local carpenter and real-life husband Kurt Russell, playing Dean Proffitt, to do the remodeling. Kurt plays a rather down-to-earth fellow who quickly learns to dislike Joanna Stayton (Hawn) as she complains about every single detail. The encounter ends with Proffitt's tools and Proffitt himself in the ocean, and the yacht sailing away.

In a moment of movie irony Joanna falls off the yacht, hits her head and loses her memory. Initially she continues to be obnoxious until Dean Proffitt identifies her as his wife Annie Proffitt. When Proffitt initially brings Annie home she is unable to believe she ever lived in the messy, rustic Proffitt home. At first Dean and his four children almost treat Joanna/Annie almost as a slave. But as time progresses Annie slowly takes charge of Dean and the children, and Dean realizes that he is falling for Annie.

Of course we know there is a point where Annie will wake up to the fact that the tumbledown shack is not her true home and neither is she Annie Proffitt. I knew the relationship could come to no good end as long as Annie did not know the truth, and the point where she learns the truth is one of the best, though saddest, scenes in the movie. Of course there is a measure of predictability in how the movie ends, but it is all fun.

The pleasure in this movie is that it is entertaining from beginning to end. Garry Marshall, who also directed "Pretty Woman," has a knack for creating movies about characters that are just a bit larger than life, but close enough to be believable. His sense of irony and humor border on the absurd, but keep far enough away that you continue to buy the fantasy. The end result is a movie that is frequently funny and often touching, and at the end you realize you have come to like the characters and wish them well.

Also appearing are the always marvelous Hector Elizondo and Roddy McDowall, adding spice to the characters. Even the lesser known actors get a chance to provide some very funny moments, such as the Coast Guard crewmen near the end of the movie.

This movie is a popcorn winner!

  • A golden Goldie treat!

    By A5UMUVEV1RUS9 on 2006-07-28
No matter how many times I watch this movie (and believe me, I've watched it many, many, many times) it's always enjoyable. Goldie Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, an incrediblly rich, incredibly bored and incredibly bitchy woman with nothing left to do while her yacht is docked at a small coastal Oregon town called Elk's Cove but to hire a carpenter named Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell, gotta love him) to remodel her closet. But when the job isn't done to her satisfaction, he winds up overboard along with all his tools. He vows to get revenge on her and the opportunity presents itself when Joanne falls overboard in the middle of the night and is later discovered by a crew of Portuguese men on a garbage barge. But Joanna has amnesia and can't remember who she is. And her husband Grant is all to happy to pretend he doesn't know her and leave her in the hospital. But when Dean sees the "amnesia lady" on the news, he recognizes Joanna and hatches a plan to get revenge and get the money she owes him. But neither one expects to fall in love with the other. Overboard is a fun and funny movie that also teaches us the lesson that money doesn't buy us complete happiness. It can for you though if you buy Overboard because it's worth watching hundreds of times over. I love it! Enjoy!

  • I ALMOST HAD TO WAIT.

    By on 1999-09-18
Thankfully we didn't have to wait to long before a DVD release for this great comedy. Goldie Hawn is so hilarious as a rich bitch that I wish she'd take more risks like this. Kurt Russel is great and the story so warm. Great campy fun for adults and actually a good family choice.

  • Good-Natured Comedy
    By A1TD9JUXG1DGW3 on 2000-11-05
Maybe this movie seems better than it actually is because so many other comedies haven't worked and weren't funny. In any case, this one works, and manages to be funny all the way through, when it almost doesn't seem like it should be funny at all. It's light-hearted and low-brow. A poverty-stricken carpenter is determined to get his just payment from a rich and very snobby woman, who is amnesiac after an accident, and installs her in his shabby house as his supposed wife and mother to his large brood of brats. As nasty as she was, we can't help but feel sorry for her, and perhaps we find the story uplifting because although she really does land in an awful situation, she muddles through, right on to a happy ending. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn appear to be having a great time as the mismatched couple, and the story and humour feel fresh.

  • Fall overboard w/ laughter at this 5 star funfest of a film
    By A16D7DT52VH7L6 on 2004-05-07
Probably my favorite comedy movie of all time (starring Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell), Overboard has it all!

A five star cast, hilarious dialogue, great comedic timing, and marvelous chemistry between Hawn & Russell easily adds up to more than five stars worth of fun. Supporting cast members like Roddy McDowell, Katherine Helmond, and Edward Herrmann make more than the most from their roles, and really shine. The actors who portray Mrs. Berberich, the school principal, and Dr. Korman, the psychiatrist, really do their part to add comedic punch as well.

The movie opens with Goldie Hawn as JoAnna Stayton, a bored, pampered, demanding and imperious heiress--husband Grant is an equally shallow and pompous aristocrat. They openly despise each other, treat the help like servants, are enamored with possessions over people, and are proof positive that money does not buy happiness.

Enter Kurt Russell as carpenter Dean Profitt, hired to build a new closet on the Stayton yacht. When petualnt Hawn refuses to pay him for his work and knocks him overboard, Russell vows he will make her pay. He soon gets his chance when JoAnna falls overboard herself and husband Grant is too preoccupied watching Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous (ostensibly to see if he made it onto a list of the top ten yacht owners!) to hear her cries for help and save her.

Once rescued and suffering from amnesia, JoAnna is taken to the mental ward of a local hospital where she terrorizes staff members with her fits and vicious snits. Only too glad to be rid of her, they fall for Dean Profitt's story that this is his missing wife, Annie, and he is permitted to take her "home."

The Profitt "residence" turns out to be a down-and-out homestead reminiscent of the farm from Green Acres, complete with car parts and debris all over the yard, a limping dog in a cast, and four unruly boys demolishing everything in sight. Watching Hawn acclimate to this nightmare is totally hilarious. At one point she sighs..."So, this is my life....I didn't marry very well, did I?" Too, too funny!

By movie's end, Hawn has transformed the unruly household into a happy family home, fallen in love with Russell and his children, and morphed into a real human being. A funny, funny movie with a feel good ending, Overboard is highly underrated. I urge you to watch it and share the humor!

  • Apalling but Addictive
    By A15J07RXB3W0YX on 2008-04-10
The plot of Overboard is almost too trite to repeat: he's a carpenter and she's a lady and she marries him anyway. Sort of. Before this can happen, she has to fall off her yacht and end up in an asylum with a case of amnesia and he has to rescue her and convince her that they are married and inculcate the ways of rude and rural countryfolk into her. You can probably guess the rest.

What's surprising is that this is a lot of fun to watch. The stars themselves are very easy on the eyes and the chemistry between them is exactly like that of two happily married people. The scenery and the occasional dollops of music are pretty good too.

If you have a thing for romantic comedies, you might like it. If, on the other hand, you just like stories about women falling off of boats, you should probably read Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasen.

  • This Oldie is a Goodie That's Better Than Ever!
    By on 1999-02-06
This twelve-year-old gem is just as funny as ever! Actually it seems even better compared to what passes for "comedy" in so many newer films. The laughs are practically non-stop in this "riches to rags" story of a kidnapped/borrowed Goldie Hawn who sobs, "I'm a short, fat, slut!" when Kurt Russell convinces her that she is his amnesia-struck, ex-navy wife with four kids.

This new DVD version is widescreen (which is why I bought it) with a crisp and sharp picture that looks like a new tranfer. There aren't a lot of extra features;however, the theatrical trailer is fun. But who cares? This is really one of the funniest movies I've ever bought. I loved it...again!

  • I'm confused...
    By A5HW7SG83AILZ on 2002-10-10
Wait. People actually enjoyed this movie? Where are you people that find inane and pointless movies (that are completely devoid of anything resembling wit), like this, amusing? Do you travel in herds? Is the climate too cold for you here in the Northeast? Do you require a certain diet that we can't provide?
Anyway. I just finished watching this movie with my sister, and we found it hilarious, if only for the fact that it was the absolute worst movie we had ever seen in our entire lives. It is almost as if these late-80s screenplay writers (a frightening breed) sat down and tried to figure out for each scene how exactly to make it the WORST scene ever. The humor is not funny; the premise is not only predictable, but offensive; the characters are unbelievable; and by the end Rachel and I were praying that the entire family would drown in the watery depths of the Pacific. This movie is perfect to watch if you are as adept at mocking 80s films as we are. There is absolutely no redeeming value. If I could give it 0 stars, I would, but that was not an option. As it is, I guess this one gold star is for effort. But then again, there doesn't seem to be much of that, either.
If you enjoy mocking this film, Rachel and I also reccommend Vibes (another 80s movie- with Cyndi Lauper!) and the classic TV series, The Facts of Life.

A male chuvinistic pig collides into a rich snobby woman, where the waters of true love will be tested. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn play in a romatic comedy called Overboard.

A spoiled and bored woman calls for a carpenter to rearrange her closet while her yacht is docked in the Port at Elk Cove. Joanna, who is proper and well mannered, is absolutely disgusted by the caroenter she has hired, a poor single working father. While leaving Port the next morning, she accidently falls overboard into the cold waters of the Pacific where a fishing boat pulls her out. Joanna is diagnosed with amnesia in the local hospital of Elk Cove, where her husband who is greedy leaves her in the hospital to take her money. Out for revenge, Dean the carpenter acts as if he is Joanna's real husband and declares her as his real wife, and takes her home to do his dirty work. He gets his kids in on the act and for payback she does all the housework, cooking, cleaning etc. Over many months Joanna's memory doesn't return and she falls in love with Dean as if she truly was his real wife. Only then do things start to change. Joanna begins to regain her memory and realizes that this life she had been living for the past several months had been completely fabricated. She returns to her normal life, but feels the emptiness inside from the family she grew to love. Later Joanna realizes what she really wants and the chase of true love begins from there.

Overboard is a witty true-life comedy that relates to parents and families. This story is romantic and captures the essence of true love and how you can find it in the strangest of places. Overboard is wonderful for all ages, a story that will catch your imagination and test your emotions. It will leave you laughing and touched what love can really do.

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell star in ths 80's comedy about a bitchy socialite wife (Hawn) who hires Dean (Russell) to do some repairs on her boat. She is very stuck up and ultimately is not satisfied with his work, so she throws him and his tools overboard, and goes on. When she goes overboard and gets amnesia, her husband is glad to get rid of her. She washes up in the small town where Dean lives and he notices her, so he pretends that he is her husband. His life is much different than her own (that she cant remember) and she has to do everything he says because she doesn't know any better. This includes cleaning and taking care of his kids. It's a pretty funny movie that is worth watching, good performances all around.

    By A3Q1FVRV0CRYTH on 2007-01-05
One of those comedies that never gets old, `Overboard' makes me laugh every time I put it on. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are brilliant together (on and off screen) and they prove that the whole phobia of working with your life-partners is not always justified. As Joanna Stayton, Goldie Hawn is flawlessly evil and deliciously despicable, but when a boating accident causes her amnesia she's quickly forgotten by her husband and picked up by Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell), the handy man she previously fired. The chemistry between the two is priceless and adds to the funny factor and replay value of this genuine comedy. Some (or at least one) reviewer made mention to the fact that this man is taking advantage of her and that this is not funny but despicable. Yes he is taking advantage of her, but it's funny so get over it. Have you ever seen `Fargo'? They kidnap, murder and lie, all of which are despicable yet it's utterly hilarious. Don't be such a prude!

movies. I own it and I must have seen it 50 times. And it still doesn't lose it's appeal. I love Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. My mom, sister, and I will repeat some of the lines to eachother, "Well,I almost had to wait." "Everyone in the civilized world knows that all closets are made of cedar." Get this movie, if want a great acted, hilarious comedy.

  • ONE OF THE BEST
    By A1XJOSJN6FHFO0 on 2003-09-24
I know this is an old movie but to me it is one of the best. Joanna, played by Goldie Hawn, is a wealthy lady touring on her yacht with her not so loving husband, who is only with her for her money. While they are anchored she has an out of work handyman come aboard to build her a closet. This handyman is Dean, Kurt Russell. Joanna dislikes him and his work and orders him off her yacht, he leaves but is determined to make her pay for her rudeness.
Later that evening Joanna falls off the yacht in a boating accident and is picked up by the Harbor crew, taken to the local hospital where it is discovered that she has no memory of who she is. Dean, seeing this on television decides to 'claim' her as his own and use her to clean up his house and watch his four boys, feeling she owes him something since she did not pay him for the job of building her closet.
One problem here, Dean didn't figure on falling in love with Joanna, or that his boys would grow to love her as their Mother.
Ah.......the heartbreak when Joanna's husband comes to claim her and takes her away. If you have not seen this movie I don't want to spoil the ending so I'll leave it here. This was a great show, full of tender moments and some good belly laughs.
This one you don't want to miss seeing, true enjoyment!

  • Overboard
    By AFTGEIYPW3IVR on 2003-11-15
Overboard staring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell this movie was released by M.G.M is in color and has a running time of 96 minutes, and is closed captioned. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are both at the top of their acting abilites in Overboard. Goldie plays a very rich and very pampered lady of leisuer, who simply must have a cedar closet to protect her clothes from moths at sea. Kurt Russell is a carpenter who is the widowed Father of four wild boys who are in dire need of proper adult supervision. Goldie Hawn hires Kurt Russell to build her cedar closet, but in a spoiled frenzy fires Russell and throughs him,and his tools overboard her huge yhat. Hawn is likewise thrown overboard when she trys to collect her wedding rings she had left on deck earlyer in the day. Hawns husband does not claim Hawn at the hospital, so the local television station runs an news speical asking for any information on who Hawn might be. Russell then comes up with the idea that if he can't collect his money the right way then he will claim Hawn as his wife to work off the debt. What insues from there is a woundreful, laugh out loud, never a dull moment movie. As Goldie trys to complete the chores that Kurt has for her to do,clean a nasty house, care for children which she has never done before, and cut the fire wood. Goldie not only meets every task but becomes the Mother that four little boys turly need, and a wife to Kurt Russell. Hawn's former husband returns to find her when her mother gives him two days to produce her daughter. The fairy tale seems to be over as Hawn returns with her dead beat husband, but finds she no longer fits into the snobby croud she use to belong to. Russell does not give up with out a fight, and what follows is a heart warming, tear in your eye, cheere out loud ending. Overboard is trully one of best movies you will ever see.

  • Very Underrated Movie!
    By ANAYSRE3LX8GZ on 2004-03-20
When ever I see Filmographys of Goldie Hawn or Kurt Russel, I rarely see this great movie mentioned! And I dont know why? I'm not into those love story kind of things, but this movie has a speichel place in my heart for some reason!

By now youve read the reveiws of what its about, so i need not bore you with another one! All I can sau is this is a very good sweet romantic comedy, and it deserves more credit then it has recieved! As you can see already, other people rated it high! They rate it high because its a finly made movie!

There no cheesyness or stupidity to it, and you will really enjoy this if you want a nice familly movie with only a tiny bit of cruedness in some areas, but i dont think its anything your grandparents would have there mouths open over!

If you have never seen this, and your into romantic comedys, then this is the one to get! Dont think its some lovey dovey sloppy stroppy kissey wussy mushy film tho! Its not.... its defnitly a feel good love flick that even the guys will probably be able to enjoy and not just rate this as a chick flick...far from it!!!!

  • You'll either love it, or hate it...
    By AY69ZK7G6CNYJ on 2005-04-20
Somewhat of a cult comedy classic, Overboard features the comedic talents of true-life married couple Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell on full display. With an unusual plot, but a tried and true romantic device, Overboard remains an interesting and entertaining movie. If you like watching movies for fun, and not for symbolism or to find something that 'speaks' to you, then Overboard will fit in nicely with your plans...

Joanna Stayton (Goldie Hawn) is a spoiled and arrogant elitist who basks in the pampered lifestyle her wealth affords her. Taking a sabbatical on her yacht, she hires a carpenter, Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell), to build her a customized closet on the oversized boat. But when Dean and Joanna get into argument over the cost of the transaction, she gets angry, refuses to pay, and sets sail for the big blue. However, when Joanna falls overboard at sea, she injures her head and washes ashore with amnesia...

Still steaming from their earlier encounter, Dean finds Joanna and quickly realizes what has happened. Out of a sense of revenge (or vigilante justice), he tells Joanna that she's his wife - and the mother of his four children, Charlie (Jared Rushton), Joey (Jeffrey Wiseman), Travis (Brian Price), and Greg (Jamie Wild). In exchange for being stiffed earlier, Dean works Joanna silly in order to make up for his monetary loss. Eventually, though, Joanna discovers her true identity - but things aren't so simple when she realizes that she's now in love with Dean...

Hilarious and fun in a family-oriented way, Overboard is one of those films you either love or hate. If you're into dramas and reality-based plots, Overboard isn't for you. Like the Seinfeld pilot Jerry and George create (where a judge sentences a man to be Jerry's butler), Overboard has a similar plot about a carpenter who gets stiffed for the money he's owed, so he unilaterally 'sentences' the woman to be his wife (butler in this case). In short, it's a bit loony. But in this instance it works.

With standout comedic performances by Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Edward Herrmann, and various others, Overboard is a memorable and light-hearted romantic comedy you won't want to miss. Most of the humor derives from the circumstances (plus people's emotional inclination to want to see rich snobs get what's coming to them). Regardless of what aspects a viewer most prefers, Overboard has a little bit of something for everybody, and that's probably why it's built such a large following. Due to the fact that it's a really funny movie and quite a few people count it among their favorites, Overboard ranks as a definite must-see film...

It's a zany mix-up in this dazzling comedy starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. This is a riches-to-rags story for anyone who loves practical jokes. Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, a pampered and self-centered wife of a presumptous yacht owner. With their boat stuck in port for repairs, Joanna hires carpenter Dean Proffitt (Russell)to redo her closet space. But after the job is complete and Dean asks to be paid, Joanna flat out refuses to him. When Joanna falls overboard and gets a case of amnesia, Dean jumps on the opportunity for a little payback. He tell Joanna that she is his wife and the mother of four wild and unruly boys! So check out this hilarious movie, and be prepared to laugh all the way through it!

  • I'm Not Sure If It Deserves One Star
    By A3N48NHTSIIJ1 on 2006-12-01
I am a fan of comedy movies, but I have never understood why films like "Overboard" are filed in that genre. This film is SICK. A man takes advantage of a woman suffering memory loss and makes her into his personal slave? Add to that he forces his children to go along with him and the brats treat her horribly. It doesn't say much that his wife has passed away, because he's NOT looking in for a wife or mother (as SICK as that would be to FIND a wife/mother that way), but he is taking HORRIBLE advantage over.

This is NOT a family comedy. I cannot believe so many reviewers here are raving about it because if you heard of someone doing this on the news you would want the sucker put to death. I cannot find laughter someone's suffering being put on display.

    By A2I9Q73C7XTINT on 2006-12-05
All due respect to the previous reviewer, but this is not a "sick" film. This movie uses exageration to comic effect and to make a point...in this case to give a rude, self-involved individual her comeuppance. This type of story has been around since the dawn of story-telling.

It would have been different if Kurt had just picked up Goldie at the hospital and they'd had no previous relationship. But she'd treated him badly and so she was reaping a little of what she had sown.

The truth is that many comedies are based on confusion, conflicts, misunderstandings, direct obfuscation, and yes, someone's pain. Think of "Tootsie". Is this a sick movie because Dustin Hoffman fools people into thinking he's a woman, including Charles Durning, who wants to date him? What about "The Producers", where two men try to [...] sweet little old ladies out of their money? "Singin' in the Rain"? The leads make a fool of Lina Lamont. "Splash"? Eugene Levy winds up in a body cast. Any of the Marx Brothers movies? Poor Margaret Dumont is the confused [...] of jokes in almost all of them.

My participation in feminist issues goes back to the late 60s, so it's not like I believe a woman has to be married to be happy, but I'm also not so rigid that I get uptight every time a woman is the [...] of the joke. Besides, Goldie hardly "suffers" in this film. For a couple of days, before Kurt starts falling for her and cuts her some slack, she has to do some housework and deal with bratty kids. If that's suffering, then most every mother in the world is suffering every day.

The fact is, this is a sweet-spirited movie. The only person who really gets hurt is Grant, who deserves it. It may not be to everyone's taste, but then, I don't get Jerry Lewis movies. Different strokes for different folks.

This movie is timeless - I can watch it again and again through the years and it never fails to make me laugh out loud - often. Both Kurt Russell and the wonderful Goldie Hawn deliver fine performances that will have you in stitches. The movie moves at a steady pace and has enough clever twists to keep you completely enthralled.

Goldie Hawn is pure perfection as the spoiled "Joanna" who is thrust into the domestic life and forced to be a mother to four unruly children and wife to "Dean" (Kurt Russell). Although she has amnesia, Joanna, knows that her life is somehow different - wrong, "I didn't marry well" she says and she dreams of the good life (her real life).

It's gags and guffaws galore as Joanna slowly remembers who she is, but not before she's completely rocked Dean's entire world. When he drivers her home (with her in the back of his truck) I almost peed my pants. Like any good romantic comedy, you'll be rooting for this couple and lose yourself entirely in the fantasy of these two worlds colliding.

Besides being funny, this movie has heart. The lead characters are multi-layered with depth and emotion - and both are easy on the eyes. Immersed in a battle of wits - sparks fly and tempers flare and the outcome is nothing short of magic. The directing/editing is superb and seamless, the writing is excellent and the cast is flawless. This is a Hollywood movie at its finest. Well done.

This movie got such bad reviews in its theatrical release that I never saw it until one night stuck at a friend's, housesitting..and since I love Goldie Hawn I decided to pop it in. I was NOT disappointed! Goldie is at her comedic best, but it is Kurt Russell and the cast of very talented kids that provide the most laughs. This movie is a hilarious romantic comedy and you will love it. It's not quite as funny as "Foul Play" but very funny moments abound. Get it, you won't regret it!

This is one of my favorite all time comedies. My sister and I can recite the entire movie. Goldie Hawn is at her comedic apex in this hilarious riches to rags comedy. I guarantee you'll love it!

I have literally worn out the video, having run it so often. Thank goodness it's out on DVD! Now I'm buying it again! How could anyone NOT love this movie? Goldie in her stretch between Joanna and Annie is probably some of the best work she's ever done. The chemistry beween the stars is so THERE that you find yourself believing the entire thing! I highly recommend this film to anyone and everyone. With the stuff the studios are turning out lately, Overboard stands as a true family film that all can enjoy.

In the late 80s' there were a lot of comedies that came out, they have all now made their way to cable t.v. as a staple on TNT.
Overboard was just on today, and i watched it. I did see it back when it came out, and I thought it was a funny romantic/comedy. WEll, after viewing it in the present day, I found it to be quite dull.
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are both good actors. I just thought the story -- her being a rich uptight brat who falls "overboard" and his poor, single dad character uses her to get back at her for not paying him for the job he did.
It's just so darn predictable. I did, however, notice one of the sons were played by kids who were in other movies. One of them was in Big, as Josh's best friend. Just a little tidbit of useless information for you.
    I don't recommend this movie, it's boring.

This movie is one of my all time favorites. I remember watching it for the first time when it came out, I was 9. I used to watch old episodes of Laugh-In and that was the only place I'd seen Goldie Hawn, I was so amazed that the rich snobby woman was played by the same cute, pixie-ish woman I'd seen on Laugh-In.

Kurt Russell's acting style seems to be the same in every movie, but I still like him very much. He's funny and endearing all at the same time (and not to mention good looking!). The kids really stole the show, especially little Joey and his Pee-Wee Herman impressions. And who could forget Roddy McDowall as Andrew (ANDREW! Are you going to bring me my lemonade, or do I have to sqeeze it thru my hat!?) and the wonderful advice he gives Joanna in the end.

The ending is a little Disney like, but sweet all the same. Over all, a good movie, if you're in the mood for a feel good fairy-tale (well, reverse Cinderella, that is).
