Make your own special 10" break-resistant, dishwasher-safe melamine plate that will last a lifetime! Special drawing pages and a set of washable markers are included in the kit to make your creations. Or simply send in a favorite photograph (optional). You can have your name or a special message typeset around the rim for no extra charge, or choose to have your artwork or photo cover the entire plate. Then send in your design pages in the pre-paid envelope provided and in a just few weeks, you'll receive back your unique, one-of-a kind creation. The images, whether photographs, drawings or a combination, are molded right into the plate and can be used everyday without fear of fading or chipping.

Plate Works now offers an Internet production option that includes online drawing tools, backgrounds and stickers, photograph downloading capability and a choice of font styles and colors at no extra cost.

Extra plates, melamine bowls and plastic and ceramic mugs are optional and all make terrific gifts for any occasion.

Make a gift Grandma won't forget! With this activity kit, you create your own artwork, then you send it to Chimeric, which transfers the art onto a 10-inch plate, an 8-inch bowl, or a 12-ounce mug. The set includes five sheets of special drawing paper and markers. You can create your work of art with the materials provided or you can use other art materials. You can also use a photograph and decorate it. When your artwork is completed, send it to the manufacturer in the provided postpaid envelope. Your project will be returned to you in five to seven weeks as a decorated plate, bowl, or mug (you get to choose). Extra matching items (all durable and dishwasher safe) are available from the manufacturer in any combination. Shipping and handling costs are not included. --S.J. • Repeated Mistakes in Plate Creation

    By A1J9BTNP2F0YNX on 2004-11-28
I bought this product as the activity at my daughter's birthday party. The kids created their artwork and I filled out the forms, including the text to print on the plates' rims, and sent them all in myself. The company made mistakes on at least 1/2 of the plates, including my daugther's. When I returned hers, the company repeated the mistake. Then I gave up.

  • Great for Gifts

Plate Works is a great idea if you are looking for a personalized and lasting gift. In the package, you get special sheets to do your art work on and an envelope to send it in to. In no time, you receive it back on a great melamine plate.

My kids made a couple of these over the summer. My oldest took great care in deciding what he would want to see on his plate every day (race cars, of course), while the youngest just went straight to doodling. We packed their artwork into the envelope with great care and took a trip to the post office to say "goodbye for now" to their creations. Of course, they immediately started waiting for the mail man to arrive - uckily the plates were returned in a super fast two and a half weeks (much less time than expected!).

They like that their plates are truely their own. I like that their art is preserved and that the plates are durable enough to last a very long time. These are definitely things that I will pack away and save forever.

In fact, my kids had so much fun doing their own plates, that we have ordered more for them to decorate for special Christmas presents.

  • not bad

I did a similar project many moons ago as a child, so when I saw this kit on Amazon, I was thrilled. The kit came with everything we needed for my boys to make plates for Christmas presents. They enjoyed the chance to do artwork that they knew would be "permanent". I scanned the art and ordered online, which I am sure saved me much time in order to get them back by Christmas- we got them back before the approx. 5 weeks they said it would take. Overall, I am very pleased and would (and have) recommend this to anyone with a child that is old enough to hold a marker!

  • DURABLE !!!!!

I bought my 3 year old a kit as a preschool project 8 years ago and he still uses the same plate everyday. The colors are still as bright and the plate is exactly the same. Just go for it and get one for your kid you'll be glad you did.

  • Great gift idea

My daughter and I bought this kit for our 5 year old to make as a gift.

It comes with everything that you need to make a plate mug or cup. You draw your picture on the paper, send it back in and they make a plate out of your art work!

    Great for boys or girls!!

  • PlateWorks

This is really a fun project for kids. I made a plate similar to these when I was in preschool (30-something years ago) and I used it for 13 years every single night and I still have it! So when I saw this kit I had to get it for my 8-year-old stepdaugther. She loved it, and while I did not get to see the finished project, she was absolutely thrilled with it and couldn't wait to make another one. It's a great idea and a really nice keepsake for children and their parents. I am going to buy one this Christmas for my 4 year old son.

  • Becoming a much loved annual tradition!!
    By A2Z60PVKWFO3SW on 2006-12-07
This is our third year having the children's artwork turned into plates. We have not had any problems with the creation of the plates from this company. The first year we used the Make-it plates and some of the children's artwork was cut off, probably due to the kids coloring over the 1/2 inch boundary (not a problem with this kit). We have also used the kits with special markers where the kids color directly on the plates, and we have had extremely poor results with those kinds of kits - the artwork has not lasted.

Anyway, the kids just love using their art plates and seeing how their artwork has changed over the years. If you have to buy gifts for many children of different ages, this is a particularly good gift because you can kill a lot of birds with one stone - meaning, this gift will satisfy children from 2 up through early middle school, boy and girl.

  • Fabulous Keepsakes - Preferred over the Makit brand
    By ADRE03Z57ZLSF on 2006-10-20
I've been having my kids create annual Christmas plates for quite a few years now. I've tried both Plateworks and Makit and Plateworks is the hands-down winner. Plateworks makes the process very easy. You can make extra copies of the "special" paper in case kids make a mistake or don't like what they've drawn (I make extra copies of the blank sheets before the kids even get started...just in case) and there is no 1/2 invisible border that they have to watch out for (making it MUCH better than the Makit Make-a-Plates). The outcome is beautiful and cleaner looking thatn the Makit plates. We've never had any mistakes or problems. Each of my children now have a number of plates, from early scribbles to today's more elaborate holiday scenes. Love it!

  • great plates!

These plates encouraged my kids 6 and 4 to express themselves and then enjoy their art each day with dinner. They love setting the table with their own "special" plates that they created. It makes them feel special that they created something that will last forever. The plates are easy to clean and can go into the dishwasher. Enjoy these fabulous dishes!!

  • Looooong time to get them back, but good product
    By AA8CM42JMA9P1 on 2007-05-04
I was looking for a wedding gift that my children could make that could be personalized. I read the reviews here, including one by a person that said they received the plates in two weeks. Our wedding was in six weeks, so I thought we would have time. Alas, these took almost eight weeks to receive. I even called the company when we sent the product in to see if they could rush our order -- we sent the drawings to them overnight -- but they said they could not do a rush order. So I would say if you're looking to get these plates for a special occasion, be sure you have at least two months (more if you don't want to overnight the drawings to them). I let them know that their product description on Amazon.com at the time I purchased said it took "a few weeks," and I see it doesn't say that anymore, [...] I just want to be sure that others aren't disappointed by the wait, as we were.

That said, the plates came back done correctly (I had sent specific instructions and called them as well) and they are durable and cute. I think we will use this product again.
