Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway - Thomas the Tank Enginex$7.95
    (32 reviews)
Best Price: $7.95
Thomas Wooden Railway Systems give little engineers a rich world to discover and explore as they re-create their favorite Thomas and Friends adventure. Thomas is a cheeky, fussy little engine. He's often getting into scrapes, usually by being overeager to do things best left to bigger and more sensible engines. Made of North American Maple, this top-notch wooden toy is elaborately detailed and built to last. Designed for use with your Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway System (sold separately), this Thomas Engine measures approximately 4 inches long. Thomas the Tank is the signature bright-blue engine in the Thomas the Tank series. He does light yard work and pulls small passenger cars, such as Annie and Clarabel. Based on the award-winning television series Shining Time Station by the Reverend W. Awdry, the Thomas the Tank train system fulfills all of a child's choo-choo dreams. Each vehicle has a different name, character, and face. It is wooden and 2 inches high with black plastic wheels. The magnetic bumpers at the ends of each vehicle make linkup easy. Children will become friends with each one, developing not only imaginative play but social skills and new motor and cognitive skills as they mature. --Sandy Hirsch

A great little take-along By A2EQWI8YKCAYON on 2003-06-01
Of course, there are a million versions of Thomas out there, and I think we own most of them, including the battery-powered, plastic Tomy sets that run on plastic tracks. But these little wooden trains by Learning Curve are just the ticket for young children to tote along with them to restaurants, banks, the paint store -- all those places we all hated to go as kids but as adults can't seem to stop dragging our own kids to.They're sturdy, detailed, accurate depictions of the famous British tank engine and his friends, and they are quiet and kid-powered, so they can be taken out and played with anywhere. They are small enough to fit in whatever your child uses as a tote. They have magnets on the front and back, too, so he or she can link several of them together to keep play interesting. I believe there is also a type of track that is designed for use with this toy, but we preferred to stick with the platic Tomy set for that activity and use these Learning Curve toys as the perfect travel mates.
A boarding pass to enhanced imagination. By on 1999-07-22
This train will not teach my child quantum physics, advanced calculus, or how to share. It, and other members of the "Shining Time" line, are absolute favorites. Unlike similar train sets, the magnets stay put and the wheels stay on. Every surface is transformed into a rail line. It even stands the test of time from a teething baby brother (although not recommended as a chew toy). The price is reasonable enough to accumulate an entire set over a short amount of time, which leads to a happily cluttered bedroom, family room, and kitchen. It also helps teach the fine art of organization (parental).
Very good toy By on 2000-07-31
First, when I bought a Thomas tape, My 3 years old son watched it six times in a line. Then I bought Figure 8 set. He liked it very much. Later I had the Mountain Tunnel Set and a lot of tracks and most of the engines and freight cars and circus cars. Now my three little children play them every day. The two years old twins count the engines and they all learn to share the railway, who goes where; Who passes the crossroad first to avoid crash. They learn to wait patiently because the train is very long. I help them bulid the railway system(I change the layout freqently). Dad sometimes has a race with them. It could be a hobby later in their teen life. My experence, 8 inchs track is never enough when you want to play on the carpet. They are good toys.
Just the beginning.... By ANFXH49BK6V7J on 2005-09-21
Thomas works with many brands of wooden railways besides Learning Curve (Brio and Playskool being two).
If you have die hard Thomas fans in your family, plan on buying more than just Thomas, Our two children are always fighting over Thomas.
Once you start, you can't stop! By A2GDFUOBRQ77P7 on 2003-11-22
When I checked out a Thomas DVD from our local library, I had no idea what I'd get into. My 2 yr old son is now obsessed with Thomas. Plays with them day and night. 4 yr old daughter enjoys them too. They are great toys- building track is good for spatial relations, they teach color and numbers and the stories all have good values- plus he plays with them like action figures. We're keeping these for our grandkids. Also, try eBay for Thomas sets. We got two sets of ten trains for about forty apiece, big savings. But then some track sets are cheaper here than you can find on eBay, so be sure to check both.
- The one and only Thomas the Tank Engine
     By A3J029KBNG5MNP on 2004-02-14
Thomas is great and it's so fun to pull him along the track woth Annie and Clarabel. When I make the big setes In set aside a branch line for Thomas, Percy, and sometimes Lady. Thomas is great but in order to get the experience you need Annie and Clarabel.
- Bad experience with Thomas
     By A2B44X211MR2QJ on 2005-12-03
My son was on target in all of his milestones until I bought this toy and the whole collection. He became obsessed with it He would not want to play with anything else and asked me to buy more and more Thomas toys. I made tests on him and he showed developmental delays. Two child psychologists and two Occupational therapists told me that it is statistically common that children become too obsessed with this particular toy and they show developmental delays. Therefore, I got rid of all the thomas collection and my child is now again on track for his age. But It took me some time to correct his behavior with therapies. I would not recommend this toy for any child. If your child gets too obsessed with it, discard it and do yourself a favor, do not buy the collection.
- Great product

- don't buy thomas the train...unless
     By A28YT1R01C0LWP on 2005-03-03
thomas the train is the first in thousands of dollars worth of great toys for a child. the only problem is if you buy this train...it starts a fascination not only with your children, but with you as well. my wife and I found ourselves searching out different thomas the train characters and have now spent about a thousand dollars on trains and accessories... it starts with this one blue little train and after a while you have invested a fortune... be warned don't start the addiction!
- Thomas is Great!
     By AAEWKLI1J7I1I on 2006-02-05
We have a 2+ year old who LOVES his Thomas the Tank stuff... and this engine is no exception. It is built well enough to handle being played with (by a 2 year old, no less) on a daily basis, carried around in a diaper bag (it's the perfect size restaurant toy), and has been dropped out of our car onto the driveway on more than one occasion and still is no worse for the wear. Highly recommended!
- Nice Toy but very small in size
     By A31RXBOGXR7UJI on 2003-04-11
My son enjoyed the gift a lot. It is very sturdy, but very small. Thomas measures Apprx. 3 in X 1 in X 1.5 in. I believe it was a little high priced for its size. It is not an educational toy, but has been very entertaining for Jr.
- My son loves this train
     By on 2003-05-11
My son loves this train and carries it in his pocket everywhere he goes. This was his favorite until we stumbled upon the battery-powered Thomas engine which he calls his "go Thomas". The "go Thomas" uses one AA battery and is quite powerful. The two together have given my son days of fun already.

I love my family. My big brother Charles is moving in. My birthday is on February 18. On Christmas, my birthday, Easter and the last day of school, I get a new Thomas toy.Thomas is a very fun toy. Purchase this and more for your kid today!
- SMALL PROBLEM
     By A3D533HDK23WZ7 on 2003-11-20
I ordered this to for my son, and when it arrived in the mail I was shocked! It is so small! I guess I sould have read the size description better. Cute train, but not worth the money for its size.
- Good stuff
     By A23JED2L60K9A on 2006-09-01
These are fun little toys for kids, and yes, I have bought my son a few wooden engines and related rail systems, but I can't help but wonder where the madness will stop. How many different railway products can they come up with? Take-Along, Wooden, motorized, etc. It's unreal. What's worse is the fact that a few people I know own almost every single train produced. Why? How many engines can a kid play with at once? And I will leave the pricing alone. That's another rant. Well, buy what you must. I just like to throw my un-asked for opinion around.
- We all love Thomas!
     By on 2003-01-02
My son is almost 3 and loves Thomas the tank engine and all his pals. We started with the die cast sets from Target, but soon ran out of things to buy so we moved on to the wooden set! They are very nice and durable, the only thing is my son loves to crash them and the paint somtimes chips, but they look loved! Thomas is all my son talks about, he has so much fun. However, beware whenever we buy him a new tape he then wants all the engines from that tape! =)
- Durable classic
     By A1M1SR6UI541EH on 2004-11-28
Thomas the Tank Engine IS my young son's favorite toy. Actually Thomas is just the beginning. When you start adding on other vehicles and buildings, you'll soon have a little railroad empire going. The price is up there a bit, but when a kid loves it like mine does, in the long run it is worth it. We got Thomas for him when he was two. He is now four and still going strong. Thomas will be a keepsake for our child's heritage book long after he has outgrown it.
- Finally! A Toy All of My Children Play WIth!!!
     By A8HVUVM6T3BT0 on 2006-03-27
This is the toy that can keep my children engaged for more than 30 minutes. Thomas and his friends wooden collection is by far the best of all the Thomas toys. It is durable and very effective. The Take Along toys are nice, too, but the magnets will not allow you to connect more than 2-3 cars at time. The magnet is just too weak. The track and accessories for the Take Along are kind of cheap. The battery operated plastic ones are nice, but the track that comes with them are simply horrible, especially the automobile track.
The wooden ones gives you durabilty, playability and connectivity. The track is very durable, and connects very well (even thought the Thomas brand is very expensive), and the connectivity with the magnets is far superior than the Take Along line (my son has connected 10+ trains without a single one coming off.
The collectibility of these things have really gone up in popularity, as well. The discontinued items are sold at auction for $40-$50 at times, and that is for one single train.
The only gripe I have is the cost. One wooden train is usually $10. YOu can get them free with a DVD for about that much (maybe a couple of dollars more ($12-$15). Larger trains, such as Gordan, Henry, et al, are even more. The Thomas track is very expensive, and generally hard to spend that much money for. You can get the Imaginarium brand (which makes the Thomas stuff), is considerably, but does not have the Thomas name. There are other knockoff brands (Ikea has one), but those are not usually compatible with the Thomas stuff.
My children like Thomas due to the personalities of all of the engines, and how they are brought to life in the dvds. The wooden Thomas just adds hands on fun for the kids, and if you don't mind spending a little extra, you will get a great product.
- He's a Very Useful Engine!
     By A3KY68OTSNHM3G on 2003-02-28
I recently purchased a starter train set for my son, and Thomas was included. Along with his coaches Annie and Clarabel, Thomas has provided hours of fun for my son. Strong in construction and exacting in detail, Thomas is an ideal toy for a young child. I'm planning on buying more trains and tracks to expand on my son's set and I'm sure they will all be the same excellent quality as Thomas himself. These are highly entertaining toys. Purchase one (or several) for your children. They will surely enjoy them.
- boy's toys
     By A2EUIO4C6X2UD0 on 2003-11-04
My soon to be 3yr old son loves these trains, he started with his 8yr old uncles trains, his uncle has had these toys since he was a toddler as well and still plays with them. After i saw how much my son enjoyed the trains i bought him the figure 8 set, i thought at the time that that was all i would get him, i now plan to get him all the trains, he knows all their names and points to pictures of them in the pamphlet you get with the set and asks for them. he calls the pamphlet his book, he reads it often. since buying that set i have bought all the videos i find, some books, some trains, some track. the only bad thing i can think of about them is that they are somewhat pricey, though i know they will last a long time, you cant tell his uncles set is old at all. the only reason i buy them is because he gets so excited about them, he also behaves very well when i threaten to ground him from them, its the only thing he gets upset about losing and its almost the only thing he plays with now besides his trucks and cars.

- Thomas, Oh how my child loves this toty.
     By A1I9M7250WA3O9 on 2006-04-14
My son loves thomas, he pulls him along everywhere we go, his only complaint is that he doesnt have a tunnel that he can put thomas in..
Thomas is so much better for my son than his other battery operated toys, Nothing like a tried and true method of entertainment for young children like my son.
my son loves all his toys, but thomas is the one he keeps going back to for undisputed pleasure day in and day out, the smile on thomas' face really brings a smile to my childs.
- very cute
     By AFPI05OMBY4CA on 2007-09-27

- Trains get uears of use
     By A3HK90M1PHKXL8 on 2008-10-25
My son got this wooden train as part of a set on his first birthday. He is now eight, and although there's a little paint missing, the engine is still going, and the Thomas trains still hold tremendous appeal. The wooden tracks are nice to play with, although I wish the whole thing were better engineered, so that when you pulled a train around the tracks, they actually stayed on better. In the end, they are pretty indestructible and wooden toys just have a kind of feel that you can never get with plastic.
