The MDRV700DJ offers 3,000 mW power handling for the most stringent professional applications and daily use at very high output levels. A wide, molded headband distributes the headphone's weight over your whole head; reduced pressure means comfortable listening for hours on end. The MDRV700DJ even has a serrated area on the plug that acts as a "hanger"--plugged into a rack of equipment, the headphones can hang on the plug when not in use. Large, 50 mm drivers deliver deep bass down to an impressive subsonic 5 Hz and provide outstanding dynamic range, bolstered by Sony's use of a neodymium magnet for maximal energy from minimal size. A detachable, single-sided cord lets you listen at a distance of 10 feet from your source, while its oxygen-free-copper design delivers maximal conductivity with minimal noise.

Hope You Have Cash By A1A4EH7P1UI0RZ on 2004-01-02
You should know a couple things before you read this review. One, I'm not a DJ and most likely never will be. I'm just a 15-year-old kid who likes his hip-hop. I'm not sure what difference it makes, other than the single-sided-monitoring feature...after all, regular listeners like good sound, too...but I thought I'd add it, anyway. Also, I've never owned really high-quality headphones until now. Before, all I had was the $20 behing-the-neck kind. So I guess this review is mostly aimed at non-DJs who haven't had expensive headphones before. So the obvious question is, is it worth this much money? I got these as a Christmas gift, but I knew the price. I know sound quality is the type of thing where you pay a lot for a little, but for an extra $130 I expected there to be some pretty noticeable enhancements. There were. You get a more full sound with these than with cheaper kinds. It's clearer and richer. The way the earphones cover your entire ear makes it so you can hear all the details, so it sounds complete. These aren't amazing changes, but they are definite improvements. But the biggest change, of course, is the bass. You don't just hear the bass. You can feel it. It vibrates in your ear. If you take off the headphones and press the earcups together, you can feel them shake with the bass. It gives the music more of a vibe, a kick, an extra level of intensity, whatever you want to call it. I was afraid it would overpower the rest of the music, namely the vocals, but the treble instruments and vocals still come through clear. There's not much of a bad side. My ears hurt from being bent into the headphones sometimes, but that was true with my old ones, and it never bothered me that much, anyway. A slight adjustment fixes it, and you usually can't feel it except when you take the headphones on or off. The only really annoying thing so far is that in some songs the snare drums come out really sharp, so I have to turn the volume down. It seems to have a pretty strong design, so you'll probably be fine if you don't put them under too much stress. Not much of a price to pay. But $150 is a pretty big price to pay. Listening to music on these isn't a spectacular, life-altering experience. It's a noticeable enhancement. But if you take into account that it extends to every single CD in your collection, it's probably worth it.
Great at first, but falls apart. By AHY2KG32696ES on 2004-05-03
Two years ago, I would have given these earphones 5 stars. I am not an audiophile and I have never tried on super-expensive headphones. I am sure there are better earphones out there. But these sounded great two years ago and still sounds perfect. People rave about these headphones and their praises are all true. BUT..these seemingly great quality earphones are actually not well built. They are made of plastic, so the first place that falls apart is the swivel joint that connects to the cups. Both left and right joints are cracking after two years of use. Luckily, it is still functional even with the cracks. The problem is that it is now a bit looser so it falls off from my head even more frequently. And we all know that these earphones (including the v600) are notorious when it comes to the deterioration of the padding on the ear cups. I just wish that it would last just a bit longer. I have been looking to replace these and I found the new pioneer hdj-1000 to be a possibility. It sounds just as good, it is definitely lighter and stays on the head steadier; and even though the construction is similar in that it is plastic, the swivel joints are built differenly from the V700DJs which makes me think they knew about this SONY's problem and they have found a way to prevent the joints from cracking.
DON'T LISTEN TO THE HYPE By A32RX109J2TRYG on 2006-04-25
A very cheaply made pair of phones. Muddy, artificial sound; the cups squash your ears; and they don't keep any outside noise out. The cable looks weak. On the plus side they are portable, look OK, and you can crank the bass all the way without the phones distorting. But for the price, they just feel and sound too cheap to be worth it. Bass heads might like them for the bass. Honestly, unless you listen to hip hop or other deep bass music where you want the bass artificially enhanced, I don't see why you would buy these phones. They look like they might break quickly.
The good the bad the pretty By A2YQXUW6F9VSR9 on 2002-01-25
The best thing about these headphones r the looks. Yeah they have bigger drivers for more sound...however, I would recommend the MDRV600's for most dj's. The benefits of these (600's) are: Lighter, cheaper, and they're more comfortable when wearing them in a traditional fahshion (i.e. listening with both ears) The 700's main feature which is very convenient for the "ear to shoulder" cueing postion is its swivel ear cups. However, if u've ever worn the 700's on top of u'r head..they tend to fall off because the drivers are so heavy. If u plan on listening to music using both ears...ahhh the pain! Its like u'r head is in a vice grip. There you have it. I own both and use both. DJ Bomb recommends you to: save u'r money buy the 600's and use the saved money towards buying better tables/mixer/needles.
Crisp, Clear, Comfortable, and Cool By AP18W8PHOOTN4 on 2003-05-13
They're not just for DJ's anymore. Exceeds my expections for finding a pair of headphones at a decent price that are flexible in their use and extraordinary in their fidelity. Great for listening to music on the PC or my portable minidisc player without bugging my housemate in the same room. They're built for hard working dj's and therefore are very comfortable to wear for long periods. I've gone for as long as a few hours without feeling like my ears were going to burn off. The sound is fantastic, the bass is deep and rich without sounding muffled. Vocals sound great. I'd had problems with previous headphones where it seemed like vocals would get buried in the bass, not with these. And last but not least and actually it was the reason I decided on these, they're very cool looking. So many of the headphones I was considering had that same old "two hockey pucks between a headband" bulked out style. Amazon.com's price is very competitive. I actually paid [$$$] for mine at a local electronics store and wished I'd have been patient enough for shipping time. When I listened to them at my electronics store, I couldn't leave without them. Neither should you!
- Flawless DJ headphones, but please read further...
     By A33FXHUOLOABLF on 2004-01-05
The 700s are absolutely perfect for hardcore DJ use and in my opinion only second to Pioneer's HDJ-1000s. And please do note that this is not a trivial fact. Everything in them is designed to suit this purpose, and no other. The bass is such a prominent force in them because that's exactly what you need when cueing songs. I've tested them in indoor and outdoor parties and they are invincible. Beatmatching is a pleasure because you can identify the bassy elements of a song with immense accuracy and definition.I personally don't think they are for listening, say, with a portable device or at home with a Hi-Fi. They are way to bassy in their overall delivery of sound. But please don't get me wrong: they are not meant to be used to 5 hours of John Coltrane or Debussy, but they are beautiful to any bass oriented genre and the on-off-on-off environment of DJing. For home/portable use, I strongly recommend the Sony 7506s. They are lightweight, extremely comfortable and have a perfect balance of bass, mids and highs EQ-wise. Every situation has its best headphones. DJing: 700s - Audiophilia: 7506s
- For DJ's Only...
     By A1L34X2F3YTD7E on 2005-04-04
I've had my headphones for 3 years. I'm an amature DJ and could only recommend these for DJ use.
1st of all, the major complaint about these headphones are the cracks that appear on the swiveling brace. Face it, it's plastic and it can break. And it's not the best design for durability. But it's not gonna happen to everybody. As a matter of fact, a lot of record stores with turntable sampling stations will have these headphones out for use. A local record shop in HB had about a dozen of these headphones out for years of careless use. I think, most people end up sitting on or packing them in heavy luggage. I can't see how you can just put these on top of your head and break them.
2nd, they're not designed for audiophile sound quality at moderate volumes. They're designed to monitor the next song while listening to blaring 15" club speakers. A device with mediocre output voltage will not move these 50mm drivers well enough to get good sound quality. So stay away from iPods. They're just not gonna drive these headphones really well. Imagine hooking up two 12" subwoofers to your car and trying to power them with your headunit. It's not gonna happen. Like I said, these are specifically designed for DJ's. I use a Vestax PMC-05Pro2 mixer and I get crisp, studio monitor quality sound. Very transparent and smooth lows.
3rd, as for the 50mm drivers.. these headphones are designed for accurate and distortion free playback at loud volumes assuming you have a clear and strong output. There are other headphones out there that have 50mm drivers that are designed for moderate volume levels. A lot of it is going to depend on the sensitivity of the drivers. Usually, lower sensitivity will handle louder volume levels better but a higher sensitivity unit will sound more accurate at lower levels. So if you're not using headphones to monitor songs at a concert or at a club, go and spend your money on something else.
- Like Nothing You've Ever Heard!
     By AN37E3GDWZ5U4 on 2001-03-15
These are excellent headphones! I had some $80 Koss headphones before these and the Sony's are much better. Their bass is astounding, and mid's and highs are clear and crisp. The only downside I have found is that they squish your ears a little, but if you don't have to wear them for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time, they're very comfortable. The coiled cord, folding design, and the supplied screw-on mini plug to 1/4 inch adapter are neat features. I'd reccomend these headphones to anyone who wants great sound.
- Awesome, but steer clear for home use
     By A3BV4M8AR9AKNI on 2002-11-25
The sound quality from these headphones is nothing short of stunning when listening to club music or anything with a lot of base. No matter how high I turned the base or volume, these phones showed no sign of distortion. You really FEEL the music. I was very impressed. A word to the wise. They may seem comfortable for a few minutes, but after 5-10 they get quite hot and a bit painful on your ears since they are very tight. These are not designed to prolonged wear and are close to the ear because they are for DJs in very loud settings. If you are a DJ, you really can't go wrong here. If you want comparible sound for home use I suggest the Bose TriPort headphones. They may feel light and flimsy, but the sound is almost as impressive as the Sony MDRV700DJ.
- Buy the HD 280 Senns Instead!
     By AOA9M17LG2JQE on 2003-07-16
These will break on you, very quickly - believe me - I'm a DJ that's given up and decided to go to the 280's! What happens is that in a short period and even after taken care of these, the swivel cups/plastic thing will crack and break and the cups will no longer fit closely to your head....they will then be useless and since this usually happens shortly after a year you will no longer have your mfr's warranty! Countless other DJ's will tell you the same thing, save your money and get something better -- the HD 280's sound better, fit better, and give you more value for your money. They are cheaper and parts are easily available and easily replaceable....unlike Sony's 700's. Do the right thing, don't buy these! You'll be happy you listened to my advice!
- Fall apart after a year
     By A1SXURKVNSZD6K on 2004-04-03
I see a lot of glowing reviews around here, but when I buy headphones this expensive, I expect them to last more than a year. The real problem here is that they have lots of tiny plastic joints. This means that all those joints will crack over time, and even with me supergluing it back together constantly, these headphones just would not last. I now have Grado SR-80s, and they sound better and will last much longer, seeing as they lack plastic joints.
- These headphones break too quickly
     By A3GPHXRDADXD9 on 2005-10-16
I bought these headphones because I heard that they were of a great quality and I expected them to last a long time. I have had them for only one year, and the cable has broken. Granted, I use these headphones every day, but I always folded them up neatly and put them in their storage bag. Well, it turns out that folding them up neatly puts some stress on those super swivel joints everyone's talking about; one joint cracked and subsequently the cable connecting the left headphone to the right headphone broke and I am left with a mono monitoring system. Believe me, I take care of my gear, and I am deeply disappointed that these headphones broke in such a short amount of time.
- Worth every penny!!
     By A1BDYSX2VECVR4 on 2000-09-05
Over the years I have broken a lot of headphones. This one by far is the best built set I have ever owned. I play 2 to 3 times a week. Thursday and Friday at Ninfa's and on Saturday at the club. Not only are these sturdy but they sound like no other headset. The 107 db sensitivity is outstanding. As for comfort. My nine year daughter thinks there very comfortable. Out of all my head- phones. There the most comfortable. I'm not sure what the other reviews are talking about. There worth every penny.
- Edit: I give it 0/5 (can't change it through amazon :()
     By A1MJOO66VYULBK on 2004-01-16
I can't change my rating, but a year later the headphones broke in the same spot that everyone else mentioned. I do not recommend these..
- GREAT HEADPHONES FOR EVEN THE REGULAR LISTENER
     By on 2000-05-19
You dont have to be a DJ to get these great headphones. I bought them for my computer mp3's and it has brought them to a whole new level. The only down is that they are a little uncomfortable on the top of your head, however, that should not hold you back. The sound quality is crisp, pure and wonderful.
- Amazing Sound...but not too comfy
     By A1CIDLC8N28GLQ on 2000-04-26
The bass on these things is spectacular, the sound is great, the portability is wonderful, and they look really nice. My only problem with them is that the headband is rather uncomfortable. It is not soft at all, I don't know if "dj" headphones are supposed to not be soft but I didn't like this fact. Other people don't seem to have a problem when they wear my headphones but I often do. I suggest you try them on and feel for yourself.
- Best Headphones made so far
     By AY55TN4VEC4QS on 2000-07-18
The Sony Headphones are they best I have experienced before. They are have powerfull bass, intense acoustics, and put out clear quality sound. I recommend them to anyone who owns a music player of any kind.
- nice sound, but a pain to wear
     By AHOUFZYC9ZUIV on 2003-09-12
I was impressed with the sound quality of these headphones and quickly picked up a pair after trying them out. I used them as the primary source of sound when at my computer for about two years before selling them off. While still impressed with the sound quality, the headphones just became too painful for me to wear. At first, it only hurt when worn for several hours at a time, but then it started to hurt faster and faster until it got the a point where I couldn't wear them longer than five minutes. In the two years though, the headphones lasted and stayed in fairly good shape with no cracks in the (faux?) leather.
- Great sound, lousy construction
     By on 2004-01-20
They sound great, with a lot of emphasis in the lower end, nice mid, but the high end is a little weak. The problem with these headphones is after a while (between 6 months and 3 years) almost all of them break - a plastic rotating part breaks. This happens a lot, it's not an isolated fault, and I was very careful with mine.Look at the Sony MDR-V900s, that don't have the rotating cups, so should be more durable. Alternately Sennheiser HD 280 Pro or Koss a/130 are worth a look.
- Inferior Quality Compared to Previous Japanese Made Units
     By A10YS5KOX4ATPK on 2004-10-27
A year ago, I purchase this exact product that was made in Japan. Right now, they are made in the Philippines. I only knew this after purchasing one unit days ago.
As I carefully compared the two, I was surprised to find the difference was striking. The original unit had much more powerful and cleaner bass (that's what a great pair of headphones are all about!). The current model sounded so inferior. The curled wire is now made with cheap-felt, almost sticky rubber as opposed to the polished and smooth wire on my original Japan made unit.
Without comparison, everything stands acceptable. I doubt the reviews for this product would stay as well if the reviewers had a chance to listen to the original 700DJ that was made in Japan.
- Good Choice
     By A1WQZQGXBUTG84 on 2001-01-12
So these really are the best Dj/Remix headphones out there right now, for this price. As you should know the sound is great, they have huge Drivers 50mm or something crazy so that Bass kicks which is nice when you are spinning records. Now they do have some minor down sides. Those being that the the shape of the actually earphone is round, which is kind of odd and does not give you/me the real comfy fit that you get with oval shaped ear phones. Also the leather on the ear piece has been known to crack very quickly. I have had mine for less than 8 months and the leather is already cracking on them. But otherwise they are a gem and a good buy for anyone looking for a good set of headphones, regardless of if you are "DJ" or not. 100% worth the money.
- Sound Good, But Break after 13 months
     By AWCE6A2S6EMR on 2003-11-08
These headphones are good for dj'ing, look nice etc, but they will break after just over one year. This is probably built into the design. The swivel joint cracks, the earpiece surround disintegrates, and, as far as I am aware individual parts cannot be replaced. This happened to me after just over one year of light use
- Perfect for the DJ with 15 months to live
     By A1EGQVK3VTNB5Y on 2004-10-04
Just wanted to toss in my own two cents, even though they're very similar to some others on here...
The sound is great. Zero complaints on that. Before these I owned V600's, and the sound quality on the V700DJ is worlds better.
The comfort took some getting used to. It took a few weeks to break them in before I could wear them for an extended period of time without taking them off to give my ears a rest.
The problem? They break. I take good care of them, using them at home or at the office, always keeping them in the carrying case when they aren't in use. The problem is on the plastic joints. For the last month or so I've been holding them together with tape or twist-ties, but the cracks are getting bigger and its days are numbered. I owned the V600's for about 7 years with the only problem being the gradual padding deterioration. I've had this pair for about a year and a half, and it's about done.
So, if longevity isn't a priority for you, go ahead and get the V700DJ's. But be warned that you'll be shopping for a new pair within two years.
- Great sound but hurts your ears
     By AFB6TON5K8Z4B on 2005-09-30
I've had these headphones for 3 years
yeah the other review, the guy is right.. the plastic does crack but what do you want it's plastic
my beef is the padding on the earphones, it isn't soft enough.... i mean after a year of use it flattens to a pancake
that added with the idiot who designed a perfectly round shape.. hello our ears are NOT round, and given the tight fit of these headphones they really clamp down on the upper portion of your ear regardless of what setting you put them on......
i don't have an oversized head or anything, so beware you might buy these and if you listen to as much music as i do realize that an hour after you wear them your ears are really hurting.....
SONY if you're going to make the 700 series obviously better than the 600 series, then why do you design oval shaped padding for the lousy model and circular padding for the higher end model
it really does not make any sense........
other than that the sound quality is great, it's like having a stereo for your head, clean treble strong bass
just TRY these on before you buy them....i'd recommend buying the 1000 model or 3000 if you're realy considering blowing a lot of cash
- Quality Headphones
     By A1J6ZAPJJVH3LE on 2006-01-19
I know alot of people will have an issue with the price of these headphones. Don't. In my opinion these are the best headphones for the money (as well as the best I have ever owned or used). I have used the famous Bose QuietComfort 2's and think that these headphones even beat out those. Although they don't have noice cancelling they have terrific, rich, and full sound. They do actually cancel out some noise because they cup your ear so well. They cups fit nicely and are extremely comfortable. I have had them on for the better part of 5 hours now and have had little to no discomfort. They are very well designed and feel quite strong. They can get quite loud without sacrificing much sound quality at all and because they hold so tight to your head (without causing discomfort) they do little to disturb anyone around you- making them great in school (where I plan on using them most) or on planes, busses, or anywhere else public. Overall these headphones are fantastic and a worthy splurge for any audiophile or music lover. Definately worth the cash!
- People will whine about anything...
     By ABQEDHBG91BBR on 2007-07-09
This review is to address the issue of these headphones breaking, and only that, because quite frankly I could go on for days about how well these headphones work for DJing and everyday listening. Stuff breaks, this is a fact of life. Cars break, dishes break, and even people break, these headphones are no different. Expecting them to last a lifetime because of the pricetag is simply naive. There's also a difference between breaking beyond function and a simple annoying break like the plastic cracking. These headphones will surely enough one day die completely as in loss of function, but up to that point they will begin to fall apart. The swivel housings are the most common thing to break but from reading the reviews here on Amazon it is as if people have never heard of Duct Tape or they are so appalled by the idea of $100+ headphones breaking that they refuse to do anything but complain about it. The Pioneer HDJ1000s break, the Senheisers break, and if you can find me headphones that don't break then I applaud your discovery of solid titanium headsets that don't exist.
This all boils down to one thing and one thing only, how well do you treat your possesions? If you're like me and you don't mangle everything you own then a $80-$150 pair of headphones is a safe investment, because it will last. If you just play wild shows all the time, wear these skating/snowboarding, throw them in your backpack, or whatever then you're a moron to buy them and expect them to not break. Nowhere in the description of this product does it say these things are as solid as a tank. It states that they're flexible (they are), have a good bass range (they do), and they're comfortable (they are for me but that's a personal thing).
Don't be deterred by reviews saying these things break, because everything does and every comparable set of headphones is equally flawed. The HDJ1000s get loose sliding fixtures really quick, the Senheiser 280s sound overall better but they feel like a plastic toy and really aren't much better. If you're a DJ your options are the V700s and HDJ1000s, there's a reason they're the industry standards. They are time tested and proven. If you aren't willing to buy a few good pairs of headphones then DJing is NOT the hobby for you because you WILL break your stuff MANY times, not just your headphones.
Well there's my rant, these headphones do EXACTLY what they say they do and for that I give them a 5/5.
- DJ Or Not, These are great headphones
     By A1T6QIKW286OBU on 2000-10-12
It does not matter weather or not you are a DJ. These headphones produce tremendously clear sound. No matter what application you intend on using them for. I my self am a DJ and have found these to be my number one pair of headphones. And in case you didn't happen to notice all the DJ's on MTV also have these headphones. Go Get a Pair You will Not be Disappointed.
- Terrible choice
     By on 2003-06-25
I previously wrote a review about how these were good headphones, but after listening a little more I have completely changed my mind. When i first used these headphones I thought they were the best thing that i had ever heard. After going through a couple different music styles and song I realized that the highs were way too intense. It was killing my ears to turn up the volume even to a normal listening level. The lows were good, and so were the mids, but the highs were so off that i decided to return these. Definately not worth 100 bucks. Headphones that come with a portable cd player sound better than these. I am very dissapointed with sony's sound products. So far I've tried to mdr-v600, 700dj, and 900 headphones and they all seem to have this same problem. I don't see how so many people think these sound good...they must have never heard a real pair of headphones. The only positive thing about these is that they look cool. Nothing else.
- Nice Headphones
     By on 2003-06-25
I tested out a couple of the other headphones along with these and I found these to be the best. I tried the Bose Tri-Ports and the bass was good but it drounded out the mids and the highs were kind of ringy. I also tried the sony mdr-v600's and I was very dissapointed with those. The lows and mids were ok, and they had good bass, but the highs piercing. Finally I tried these and they were definately worth the money. The Bass is perfect due to the 50mm drivers and the mids are clear. The highs are a little hissy if you turn up the volume loud...but that is just on a standard cd player with no equilizer. They sound good with a cd/mp3 player or computer, but they sound much better if you have them for DJ use or if you have some type of equalizer. Overall I would say they are a good deal for the money and they are some of the best phones out there.
- DO NOT BUY THESE HEADPHONES!
     By A1NXRWVWGRZJEP on 2005-02-03
While the Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones have an appealing look (c'mon, that's why you want them...I was duped as well!) there is an inherent flaw in the quality of the construction. The casings around the 'swivel cup' WILL eventually crack rendering the headphones useless (do a quick online search and you will see how many consumers have complained about this exact problem). I have used mine for home listening purposes which should be well within what Sony would consider normal 'wear and tear'. Despite the fact that the cheap design is a common complaint, Sony will charge you $78.65 to exchange your useless headphones with a 'refurbished' pair...this on top of the original $150!
I sincerely hope this review will save other consumers from throwing their money down the drain. Do yourself a favor and invest your money in a product that will last!
