Inferior specs, Inferior design, malodorous cord, get the Belkin

On July 7 2007 I received from Amazon the Monster Cable MP AV600 Power Protector and the Belkin SurgeMaster Superior Series 8-Outlet Surge Protector (6', 1770 Joules). They both sold for about the same price. The Monster is vastly inferior. The Belkin has three times the Joules rating. The Belkin is much more attractive and well designed. The Monster is just a squarish standard strip that felt very cheap compared to the Belkin and worst of all the Monster had a bad rubber stink and the cord felt gritty. The Belkin had a smooth white power cord. My other mistake was to get the Belkin with the 6 foot cord , I realized a 12 foot cord was available after ordering. You will be MUCH happier with the Belkin. I will post this exact review with the Belkin as well. Last time I gave something 1 star Amazon did not display it. Maybe the higher end Monster models are nicer.
Not as good as first impressions indicated

I've used Monster surge protectors in the past and so far haven't lost anything. This is yet another one, great price for a very nice surge power strip. I particularly like the right-angle plug, this is great when you want to have it behind furniture that sit up close to the wall. Very solid design.
UPDATE: Well, unfortunately I can't change the star review on this, but I can at least update this review and warn people against buying this. I was using it for my Tivo-TV combination and a bad storm one day fried the hard drive in my Tivo. So dock a couple stars for it failing to properly protect my device. So now I get to experience this Monster warranty process. Suffice to say, you will be lucky if you get anything out of them, or can fulfill the requirements and 3 pages of information they want you to send them. In my case, I have a Tivo DVD that no one within several hundred miles of me is "authorized" to repair as they require, and they require an inspection of the damaged equipment by such a technician prior to filing a claim. I have to order a replacement part on the internet, which they don't accept and they won't reimburse after the fact. You also have to pay to send the surge protector back to them for inspection as well, so basically you have to spend a significant amount of money to file a claim and may get absolutely nothing out of it. So basically, the warranty in a lot of cases is of little use and not worth the trouble they put you through versus just paying for repairs yourself. So you can dock another star or two for that. So while I like the design of this surge protector, I probably will go looking for another one that will properly protect my equipment at least.
All wires neat and in place

There are lot's of power strips out there. This one is a neat and safe one that has turned the jungle of wire behind our TV into an organized and protected array. Overall a good product with a nice manufacturer's Guarantee of performance.
A Safety Plus

It always made me nervous to go in my sons room and see all the outlets full, and extention cords being used "illegally". The Monster Cable MP AV600 has not only neatly and safely consolidated this hazard, [pricey] equiptment to which it attaches.
Quality surge protector, good value

I recently purchased an LCD TV, and I wanted a decent surge protector for it. I discovered this one from Monster and it seemed like a reasonably affordable quality surge protector, so I purchased it.
The unit feels like it is of good quality, from the outlets to the body to the power cable. I have used other cheaper surge protectors, and this one feels more sturdy and durable. The right-angle plug is nice, since the cord doesn't stick straight out, allowing me to put the TV stand closer to the wall. Some labels were included with the surge protector, but I am not using them.
If you are looking for a simple quality surge protector that is not too expensive, I would recommend this. I normally consider Monster brand products to be somewhat overpriced, but this was a fairly good value for the price.

During a recent blizzard (Michigan) a large electrical problem blew out 4 substations and a large number of transformers resulting a wide spread 12 hour+ power outage. The resultant surge toasted out my dishwasher and track lights. However, the Monster AV600 saved my expensive home theater setup, although the AV600 got toasted also. IT DID IT'S JOB and I give it the highest recommendation possible. Great product at a low price. Thanks Monster!!
- A High Quality Surge Protector At a Great Price

I'm a big fan of Monster Cable products. Their stereo/home theater cables are the best you can buy. So buying a Monster Cable surge protector is a smart choice. It's also reasonably priced (unlike most Monster Cable products) and comes with a great warranty, as described in the product description. The unit has a quality feel to it, and each outlet is labeled (TV, DVD, etc.). It also comes with additional labels to wrap around each power cord (if you choose to do so). I would definitely recommend this product.

- Yep, it's a power strip!

Uh, it's a power strip so what's to say? It works. You plug things into it, and they work. Actually the best thing about this one is it comes with little stickers that you can attach to the end of plugs on your electrical devices so if you unplug something, you'll know what it is! Though, it should include blank ones so you can name things yourself such as PS2 or ROUTER, things like that. Anyhow this was a great price and this seller ships real quick so you can't lose.

all power cords should have flat plugs.. great idea. However.. since this is in an entertainment cabinet the cord comes in through the back.. where is the on/off switch???? in the back!!. my old surge protector had the switch at the very end which put it right in front. Now I have to reach into the back of the cabinet to access on/off. Who designs this stuff anyway?

For a Monster product, this guy is kind of cheaply made. Like another reviewer said, it just kind of feels cheap. I know its just a power strip, and thats why a bought a cheaper one, but it seems a bit inferior for a Monster product. I'm really no fan of theirs, but at least their products LOOK and FEEL as if they are better than the rest. This one, however, seems like it would fall apart with minimal abuse. I have another APC brand surge protector that my computer stuff is plugged into that is far and away superior to this thing.

Well, I'm not going to test the thing for it's endurance, but it does supply power to my less expensive home theatre system, I wish it has a higher rating for being a Monster Cable powersupply, but it works just fine.

This is a great brand for the features and price. The main feature I needed was the flat profile wall plug. Having a 24K plated connector, color coded outlets and 8 ft cord were definite pluses. Hard to find a better deal on a quality product like this!

- Excellent cord length and quality

The two big selling points of this product for me was
1. Extra long cord length
2. Excellent Build Quality
The product came with outlets pre-labeled and some sticker ribbons for the user to attach to the cords themselves. These are helpful, except when you want to plug in something that is not audio / video related. (Not really that big of an issue though...haha.)

Well what can you really say about a surge protector? It works as to shutting of the electrical equipment when you switch the button on or off. I don't know if it will shut down if damaging electrical spikes comes but I expect it does. The size of the product is slim and does not take up much room. The color coded receptacles are very nice and I am very happy I purchased it for the $14.99 low price Amazon was selling it for.

It's great to have the color-coding for each of your components, and I believe that Monster is a reliable brand. It may have been nice to have a coax connection to protect my sat receiver, but I am a bit dubious of the actual utility of coax connection surge suppressors. I suspect that, in general, surges are very rare or nonexistent from satellite dishes to the receivers, unless brought on by a lightening strike, in which case, any surge suppressor would be unlikely to withstand the strike. Because of this, I saw this particular power protector as the perfect solution for my needs.

So I guess I have never really put this thing through the test but I do live in an area where there are power outages. NO damage to any of my components (Sony 27" CRT TV; Onkyo home theater in a box system; Sony DVD player; Comcast Motorola Cable box). Not sure if it was the monster hat protected it or not but no problems. Color code is convenient and plug is flat to hug the wall. Good price.

The AV600 looks like a pretty standard power strip with bright colors painted on to help you organize and categorize your connections. Stickers and cable guides come with the strip to help you organize.
The strip seems to be well built, but I really can't say for sure whether it can live up to its claims. I guess only an independent testing lab could do that.
As far as the rated protection level, you could probably find another power protector that has a higher rating for a similar price. However, my experience with the Monster branded products has been favorable, so I really bought this item based on the company reputation and past experience.
One benefit of this power protector is that you can plug it in with the flat power connector and move your furniture (if applicable) close to the wall, unlike normal power strips where the plug sticks way out.
If you have really high end equipment, or live in Florida as I do, I would recommending spending a little extra for more 'protection'.

- Good quality but a bit pricy

You pay more for the Monster name. Good quality but I am not sure this is better than a slightly cheaper competitor's model. Trouble is you can't really tell unless you get a bad surge so I went with the name brand and the $10K insurance policy.
I do like the flat plug feature as I have limited space between my dsk and the wall plug.

Just bought one at Best ___ for $29.95 plus tax. Needed it for Big TV that was arriving earlier than expected otherwise would have done it via Amazon. There price is just about 50% less.
PS: Also wrote review on how my new 58" TV was an $1100 dollar savings via Amazon as well.
- colorful idea

This color coded powerstrip is such a good idea. I am always unplugging the wrong device but with this strip, I have put a small piece of tape on the back of each appliance and know exactly what I am unplugging. It also will lay absolutely flat--others that I have used are always tipping over. I rate this five stars for a simple idea that works just great.

Price was great only $10 but after getting 3 units, all three had cheesy construction. There was difficulty inserting plugs in all 3 units and after 2 weeks one unit completely failed on me. The reset button never popped and there was a smell from the failed unit that usually indicates melting or fused electrical components. No damage to items plugged in but I would advise all not to buy this outlet strip.
P.S.> The Second strip failed on me the same way after a couple of weeks usage replacing the first one. Only one of the three is still working...you get what you pay for. I cannot understand how anyone rates this as a good item. I looks great and has a great cord but fails miserably..the proverbial book by the cover story. I will never buy monster products again. I have never had this poor a performance on a power strip in all my life. I did not get any electrical damage to what was plugged in when the failure was incurred but who needs the headache potential. pass on it here

I like the color coding of the power strip and it's a better strip than most cheap strips found in regular retail stores. Cords are good quality. I prefer Monster cables to cheaper makes and models.
