Apples to Apples Junior is the young version of the Apples to Apples original game that's been hailed as a national competition winner by Mensa, the high-IQ society. In both versions, players are dealt five red apple cards and try to make the closest match possible to a word on the judge's green apple card. In Apples to Apples Junior, if you're holding a quintet consisting of, for example, Winnie the Pooh, Farms, Swimming, Bumble Bees, and The First Day of School, you play one of the five to match Loud. If the judge selects your card as the best match, you keep the green apple card; if you win four you're king of the orchard. Apples to Apples Junior includes rules for a couple of tasty variations, too. Crabapple play awards the card to the player with the worst match, while Quick Picked Apples rewards speedy card selection by eliminating from consideration the last card played to a green apple card. Fast and easy to learn, Apples to Apples Junior is a bushel and a peck of fun. --Tony Mason MPN: 7750 - UPC: 659390077507

  • Fail-safe fun, no matter what combo of players you have!

    By AJL6VNEL4OF6A on 2002-11-04
This is an *outstanding* game- it takes seconds to learn, and is endlessly re-playable. Best of all (for us, anyway!) is that it is a game that can really be played in mixed age groups. Even the youngest player (who probably really should be at least 6 & have a pretty good vocabulary)can hold their own, and the adults don't have to keep things 'smooth'- they can let loose and play their hardest: the rotating judge and the luck element ensure that even a kid who is usually a poor ...will have plenty of fun and success. Several reviewers have noted that the game really isn't about winning- even v. competitive types just get into the fast game play. And it is fast- a game can be finished in 20 minutes or less. Our kids play this game over & over- with us as a family, and with their friends and cousins. Tremendous value!

  • Our family's favorite game

    By AOM91Q2SIB4ZN on 2004-07-01
This is the best game!! My husband and I have as much fun as the children when we play. My son, who is an early reader, could play this at an earlier age than that recommended on the box. When only three of us want to play, we use a stuffed animal for the fourth player; the children think it's a riot to see the answers the animal "gives." (We select a card from the animal's five choices without looking at it, and the children think it's so funny when, for example, the animal chooses "cotton candy" as something that is scary. This game is one of those games that is both educational and REALLY fun to play. I HIGHLY recommend that you buy this game. We have all three versions! (There are two children's versions - one for younger and one for older children, and an adult's version.)

  • Great fun!

This is a fast-paced game that you will want to play over and over again. The only problem with it is that you need at least 4 people to play, but that does make it good for family gatherings. It is fun, and funny, and appealing to all ages.

  • A winner -- enchanting and easy

    By on 2002-04-13
The more players, the more fun the game, but I have enjoyed playing it even with just two people. Kids need to be able to read to enjoy the game. The game is an fascinating juxtaposition of nouns and adjectives. Each player plays their best match of a noun to a given adjective. You must play something, even if you don't have a "good" match. The fun is in the unusual combinations and discussion of what the best match might be (eg., Cinderella -- squishy). It triggers verbal imagination in a way reminiscent of the magnetic poetry game. I've played this game with girls, boys, and adult/child mix and had fun everytime. Another big plus (to me anyway) of the game is that it does not have to take a lot of time. Although the official rules say to keep playing until someone 'wins' four matches, you can play this game fewer or more rounds and still have continuity of the game.

  • Best Christmas gift ever!!!

    By A11E7355ZW8A8K on 2004-12-28
My 6 year old daughter got this game for Christmas at her grandparent's house. At one time there were 7 of us playing. (ages 6-43)

It was so funny to see my husband and his brother try to figure out the answers that the girls gave. (which were the funniest ones my sisters in law, my daughter and I could come up with. The boys thought they were playing it wrong.) It was also great to see my husband and his brother and sister connect again. Not just the normal, "How's work?". They really dug deep in their memories to see what they thought their brothers or sister would say. It was amazing how right they were most of the time.

You always knew you had a winner if you had MY MOTHER in your hand. Who was going to make grandma mad. (or me when it was my daughter!)

We even stayed an extra day to play this all afternoon. YOu should have heard the "YES!" when one of the adults beat the 6 year old. (which was rare) She was so proud of herself. Almost everytime, someone would ask the "judge" what would you pick second. LOL!

Great memories for years to come I think! I hope there are expansion packs for the Jr. game. We have a 3 year old coming up next.

  • EXCELLENT Family Fun!!

This is everyone's FAVORITE game!! Better than Monopoly - better than LIFE -- better than all the others! FANTASTIC!

  • Great Game for All Ages!
    By on 2002-12-31
I didn't know much about this game, but based on the other reviews here, I decided to buy this for my niece for Christmas, and our entire family had a great time with it. By the end of the day, we had all sorts of people playing - everyone from a 7 year old to a 74 year old! 2nd graders to Grandpas all enjoyed it.

The kids loved being "the judge," and never felt pressured, even when the grown-ups were lobbying them to pick their card - they would just giggle and go with what they thought was best!

There was one point on Christmas afternoon where all the boys disappeared - who ranged in age from 10-74, with a couple of college-age cousins thrown in, and here they had snuck away to play the game without the girls!

We have a large extended family, who all like to get in on the fun, so we also appreciated the fact that while as few as 4 could play, up to 10 people could play together, too.

Many, MANY laughs were had over the various cards played. We're already looking forward to buying the expansion pack! All in all, this was an excellent game that received "two thumbs up" from the entire clan!

  • Great for school!
    By on 2004-05-27
I am a counselor in an elementary school and for some reason, although it's quite simple compared to boring board games, the children love playing this game. They learn words while using their creativity and then have to articulate their arguments for why their word is best! It can be played in large groups, teams or one on one. Being the judge can give children a chance to be a leader and one showing wisdom, so it builds self-esteem, too. Highly recommend this!

  • Great game for all...
    By A8MKE9SRMR97 on 2003-12-10
Though this game doesn't "a-peel" at first sight, it is enjoyable to EVERYONE in our family: from 87 year old Grandma, to our 5 year old. Very educational, supporting divergent thinking and learning parts of speech. I have used it (translated) for teaching French class to 4-6th graders and it has also been a huge success.

  • Most wonderful learning trivia game

This is the most wonderful trivia game my child has ever experienced. It has helped her in many ways, this trivia game is fun and educational. I recommend it!

  • Educational and Fun For The Living Room or Classroom
    By A12Z7Z8TBBA282 on 2003-03-25
My class couldn't get enough of this game! The word spread throughout the 4th grade and I had to loan the game to the other teachers. I had students writing down the web site to order it at home. My first grader and I had a great time with it and the neighborhood friends.

  • Fun Family Game
    By A3EZNP1KY4OV1G on 2004-12-21
Our 6 and 8 year-olds just received this game as a present. Our whole family has already played about a dozen times. This game is a lot of fun! I can see our kids playing it with their friends without adult help as the rules and instructions are very simple. The game requires children to think creatively and make unusual associations between adjectives (green cards) and nouns (red cards). As a teacher, I am also using this game to teach grammar (parts of speech, linking verbs, participial nouns...)

This game I got for christmas a few years ago. It is so much fun! It has been in and out of the game box at least 200 times!

  • This is the best large group game we have found yet!
    By A1R3K5JP8JZIXC on 2004-12-07
This game is so much fun! The only thing that should be changed is the age range. The junior game should be ages 6-adult instead of 7-12!! Even my five year old loves it (with a little help reading.) We own shelves of games and this one has probably been the most played of them all. We play with just our family (five people) and we play with large groups of friends. It is great that the game is easily found now at places like Target and Toys R Us. We also own the adult version and it is fun, but for kids I would stick to the junior version as some topics in the adult version will be above their heads.

  • Not such a good deal
    By A3K9878M1O2FR3 on 2007-11-08
The younger kids thought this game was too confusing and hard; the older kids thought it was dopey. The games turned into popularity contests complete with tears and hurt feelings. I also bought the adult version of this game and all the adult members of my family think that's dopey too. We keep "accidentally" leaving it at someone else's house to get rid of it.

  • Apples to Apples, Jr.
    By A3L0UKXI7SXVPZ on 2003-07-12
Of the many gifts, I gave my grandsons last Christmas, this was their favorite! Mom, Dad, Uncle and Grandma had a great time playing it with them. It is such a good vocabulary builder and results in a hilarious time for all involved. Seven months later, it is still a favorite.

  • Awesome game for kids and adults!
    By AYFJH7G3FPMS on 2003-07-31
My inlaws, husband and myself fell in love with the adult version of this game. My daughter (then 7) really wanted to play but it was difficult as there were many people and such she didn't know. When we found out about Apples to Apples Jr. we were just thrilled. We play it together as a family and have tons of fun! My 6 year old son plays too. We have bought this game for some of my daughters' friends as gifts and they love it too. It's nice to have a game that adults and children can both play and have a blast!! I would highly recommend it.

  • Fun for all

This game has been a hit with everyone I know. We take it on our Cub Scout camping trips and all the boys want to play! We have given it as a gift to numerous people who then ask where we got it so they can give it as well. The adult version is great, too!

  • My kids are addicted!
    By on 2004-04-10
I would highly recommend this game! Both my 4 year old (she needs a little help since she can't read yet) and my 8 year old love it. It encourages reading, vocabulary development and critical thinking, and it is VERY fun. Can't wait to try the versions for older kids!

  • the best kids game ever
    By A11M6H80NELMSI on 2005-10-17
This game is a blast. We bought it for our two children and they love it. We also bought one at work for our ESL students, and they are learning so much. It is by far their favorite classroom activity. It is great because it can be played for a short time after a lesson.

  • Funny school and home board game
    By on 2006-05-29
My teacher let us use this game during free time. Kids couldn't wait to play, it was so much fun. When there was a theme like scary or weird we would put kid shows which made it really funny. Once the theme was weird and a kid put teletubbies. The kid actually won. It is a real fun game. I will hopefully get it for my birthday. Also i hope i am writing on the correct apples to apples since im not sure if it was on the junior version or on the regular version.

  • Kids are having a blast!
    By A1DTV1TLKQDGWK on 2007-01-10
My seven and five year olds are playing this almost every day. Fun to play as a family too. This is the gift that has held their attention the most since Christmas. Kids should be able to read to play, simple rules, the more people that play, the more fun it is. I highly recommend for great fun.

  • For Any Age
    By A24XUR2ZHOWRFA on 2007-11-27
Any age can play. My Granfather in his 80's and my 5 year old love playing this game. It's always fun to read out the cards that the players pick to accompany a definition. It's hilarious - especially when someone throws in crazy cards like "sharp knives" to accompany the term "cuddly". Even before my youngest could read, she would play this game with us - it was one of the first games she could play, AND win. It really made her feel good to be included in the family game play. She would just randomly pick a card from her hand and it would often be selected as the winning definition. Plus, we would let her be judge and read the cards out to her. Even though she didn't always know what the definition meant, she would pick a card or word that she "liked". As a result, the rest of the players will put down fun cards to get her attention like "horses" or "candy" because those were things she knows and likes, which is also very funny when it completely doesn't match the definitions at all.

We were clued into this game by some friends who play it with their grandkids. I'd never heard of it before. What a hoot! Even our child who cannot read yet loves to play. We just read her the words. Great game.

  • Great game for all ages -- even the kid version
    By A2TO303UL0N67S on 2007-11-15
This game is a great game for kids of all ages. I love this version for those times when you have a variety of kids playing together. This crosses that 8 to 18 barrier that sometimes comes when trying to get different age kids to play the same game together.

  • Good game, but small version
    By A1XDTZLNEWQ81X on 2008-01-07
My family loves Apples to Apples. The rules are simple, but it's lots of fun to play. I bought this set on-line for my sons' friend, and was disappointed to see that the game only came with half the cards that Apples to Apples Junior contains, for the same price.
