  • buyer beware

    By A3RNH6W0JETVYZ on 2006-01-15
The temperature readings were spot on.
There are multiple ways to display it, hang it from the shelves in your oven, place it on the bottom of your oven. it's very stable, doesn't fall over, mostly because of it's 4 inch length.

BUT... as with all things in the oven, this will become splattered with grease, and harder to read, and you'll want to wash it....DON'T!

any type of cleaning, be it abrasive , or chemical, such as Simple Green, will erase the temperature markings... and make it useless.

  • Life span

    By A2F8ZZ2MZ5DXWC on 2005-12-18
The temperature markings on this thermometer are not protected! Over time the markings get occluded by grease and if you try to wash the grease off the markings come with it. This means the thermometer has a short life span for people who rely on the markings for anything (which granted is not everyone). Last time I buy an oven thermometer in which the markings don't sit behind a glass face!.

  • Highly recommended!

I bought one of these at the recommendation of a well-known cooking magazine (in which they tested it along with a very advanced temperature sensor), and it took top honors amongst a dozen other models. I've found it to be extremely helpful, easy to read, and a very stable design. Others I have used have proven far to easy to knock over!

  • Finally... one that worked!

Ok... oven not seeming to be hot enough... bought an oven thermometer at Kroger's.. not expensive. Well, that purchase didn't seem to heat up as much as the oven..
Went to William and Sonoma and bought the Taylor 503, much more expensive. So it should really be good, right? That thermometer seemed to be so, so slow in reaction. And thanks to the position of my oven light.. I couldn't even read it.
Went to Amazon and got an overnight delivery of the Taylor Oven Guide Thermometer. ( don't add all of this up...three thermometers.. it's ridiculous)Bottom line... this one was perfect for me. As far as complaints of grease and cleaning and losing lettering?? I take it out before I put the item in to bake. (Hint..use tongs to remove it as it is HOT. If you use mitts or hot pads.. I guarantee you.. you will drop it.)

  • Miserably inaccurate

    By A34ZDM4OFYT4SP on 2005-10-01
I just received one of these. Being a suspicious sort of person, I checked it against my professional digital instant-read thermometer. When the true temperature was 275, the Taylor thermometer read 300. When the true temperature was 115, the Taylor read 130. So the Taylor was neither absolutely accurate not linear.

  • Great oven thermometer
    By AIBZ1U7VJVK72 on 2006-11-09
I use this for baking polymer clay items in a toaster oven. Polymer clay requires very precise temperatures, and the typical dial oven thermometers were not only very very slow to register temp changes, but also inaccurate. My beads would eithe rcomout burned or undrebaked. This one shows temperature changes immediately, sits conveniently at the back of the oven. With this one there have been no more burned beads!

  • Rather pricey for a Chinese product....
    By A1LVW3BOWGX2FB on 2005-09-28
but very accurate. This nice guage is very easy to read as well. A must for temperature sensitive baking.

  • Unreadable
    By ALLUR5KZ2IZBU on 2006-10-26
I also bought this due to the first choice recommendation of Cook's Illustrated magazine. I suppose it is accurate as I don't have a professional temperature gauge to test it. It's stable when laid flat and you can hang it as well. The BIG problem is that the ink on the markings fade over time, either due to the high temp in the oven or something else. Grease also get splattered all over and impossible to remove. I rubbed it with a Brio pad but couldn't remove much stain though the ink faded even more. It's practically useless now, just sitting in my oven as I couldn't see the markings unless I took it out and look at it closely.

  • Some problems but a good basic thermometer
    By A1ERIJVPQLSP3W on 2005-11-28
My thermometer came with half the liquid at the upper end of the tube; I was able to 'shake it down' like an old medical thermometer and it seems to work fine now. My impression is that it may be reading a little low (about 20 degrees). Good because the liquid is not mercury!

  • Just OK
    By A24FY1EBJ7EWLH on 2007-02-08
This thermometer is hard to read. By the time I read it, I've had the door open so long that the temp goes down. I am not sure whether to trust the thermometer or the dial on the oven.

  • Lasted two weeks
    By A163XTWC9V7SO on 2007-02-15
I purchased this thermometer on the recommendation of Cook's Illustrated. At first, the thermometer noted that our oven was running 75 degrees cooler than what was indicated by the settings. This contradicted the results we could witness simply from observing the cooking process on various foods. Within two weeks of occasional use, the thermometer "broke" and the liquid would not move any longer. Despite the Cook's Illustrated recommendation, I have not replaced it and would caution prospective buyers to weigh the possibility of a cheaply manufactured product not performing before they purchase it themselves. If you purchase it locally, at least you'll have easy recourse should you need to replace it.

  • Oven Thermometer
    By AILAW3C6GYXM2 on 2007-02-17
I like this thermometer and it gives me an accurate temp. for the oven. The only thing that I wish was better is the size of the numbers on the degree number line. They are on the small size and rather hard to read without pulling the tehermometer out of the oven.

  • Good, simple, reliable
    By A3NXI6PIPIL4HG on 2007-07-30
Not much more to say. Our first one sat in the oven for probably 5 years until it was so spattered and stained we couldn't read it anymore. These things are very durable, simple, and much more reliable than your oven's internal thermometer. If you live in an apartment, where the oven and its past treatment are unknown, this is absolutely required if you want to bake anything. Not to mention, its cheap insurance so you don't waste hours just to find out your thermometer just went off the chart by 40 degrees and your food is ruined.

  • Not sure it works correctly
    By AZCKYWV2DH6EF on 2007-03-08
I have used this several times now and get different readings depending upon the temperature set on the oven. I can't believe that my GE oven is that far off at 425 degrees, but it's okay at 350 degrees, so I'm blaming the thermometer. I could be wrong, I'll be purchasing another brand of thermometer to further check this out.

    By AB3C4774S8NWF on 2007-04-10
I picked this one because it was easy to read, can hang on the rack, or place on the rack.

The only thing bad about it was it can break easily if you are not careful. I broke the first one I received because I was baking many items and it got push off or smashed in the oven by the pans. It is best to remember to move the thermometer to a safe place in the oven if you are baking several things. ...like the bottom floor of the oven.

  • Works as well as any thermometer
    By A14K1EN7RMV93V on 2007-03-16
I purchased this thermometer because Cook's Illustrated recommended it. It works as well as any, I guess. Because it's long instead of tall, it's harder to knock over. The one thing I didn't like is that when I was cleaning it the other day, some of the writing came off. Besides that, it's fine.

  • not accurate
    By A7YKBPMRL5VFM on 2007-07-03
This thermometer always read lower than the temperature I set for my oven. I had been told a mercury thermometer works best. When I finally had a professional come to check my oven, he said the thermometer was off by 25 to 50 degrees.

  • I sure did need this
    By A1T5MXBR5HR18L on 2007-05-23
I did not realize how out of kilter my oven temperature was. This item has made a big difference in timing and quality of items baked.

    By A1R2PSGHI3BYHW on 2007-06-05
This thermometer really does the job. It's very easy to read, easy to hang or rest on the rack in your oven.
And not only is it a great, accurate thermometer, it's far less expensive than any of the other brands. Small wonder that it was highly recommended by Cook's Country Cooking magazine...

  • Useless after one washing
    By A3M9RN1BEEBATO on 2008-02-20
One month in the oven, one trip
through the dishwasher and it's a piece of
stained stainless steel with no markings.
    One star for Taylor's audacity.

Reasonably priced, accurate and easy to read. Get rid of your old fashioned and inaccurate dial thermometer and get one of these.

  • Useless - You can't Read It
    By A1TJT6GXDGNN8Q on 2008-04-23
It is hard to recommend a thermometer you can't read!!

This thermometer has to be tilted to a very precise angle in order to read it when it is new. Even then, your eyesight needs to be close to perfect to get a reading!

After a bit of routine cooking there will be deposits on its surface. Then you'll have a thermometer no one can read, even the eagle eyed.

I happily threw it away and purchased a Sunbeam 90300 with nice clear markings.

  • Quality Talyor Oven Guide Thermometer
    By A2PBORH4683WRE on 2008-03-25
I have had this oven thermometer for four months now and it is fantastic. I have taken good care not to wash it with anything abrasive like steel wool and I have not lost the numbering system. It is easy to hang on any rack in the oven. My only complaint would be that the fluid be a different color so that the contrast would be greater between the fluid and the metal. It is hard to read it through the glass of the oven door.

  • Not Too Acurate
    By A29N5TMO66Q05M on 2008-01-10
The thermometer read 200 degrees when I put it into boiling water. Can't tell if the error is consistent over all temperatures.

As others have pointed out, the numbers are printed on metal and will wear off if cleaned too vigorously.

So, for a few dollars and for a few months, I'll have a rough idea of the oven temperature. Not what I want, but there don't seem to be other thermometers that are any better.

  • Pretty good, except for two flaws...
    By A26K4ME3IQNKYA on 2008-01-31
The thermometer seems to be quite accurate. The biggest flaw is the numbers. As others have said, they come off very easily if you aren't careful. They could also be larger, and in a more contrasting color - when the metal tints from the heat, they're black on brown, for a low contrast. I bought this one because liquid devices are more accurate than bimetallic (dial) devices, but the most accurate thermometer can't help if you can't read it. The other flaw is that you can't tilt the thermometer. That means you'll have to bend the feet, depending on where you place the thermometer, until you have a good viewing angle. These folks need to get together with the guys at OXO who really seem to know how to design stuff for usability.
