Customer Reviews

  • More like 10 Feet

    By A3PO61U2TPXYG8 on 2002-01-13
I bought this extension cord solely because it claimed to be 20 feet long -- so I could listen to CDs while doing computer work.

The cord, plus the 5-foot cord on the headphones, would give me about 25 feet -- more than I needed for the distance.

However, this cord was so tightly spiraled that it stretched only about 10 feet before the plug pulled out -- useless for my purpose. I have been straightening it between the doorknobs on two doors off and on ever since I got it, but it still hasn't straightened out enough for me to use it.

The sound quality is good, but I don't need a headset when I'm in the living room with the stereo. Unless and until the doorknob caper works -- and I'm about to give up -- I wasted my money. Which means, BTW, I also wasted my money on the headset --which I bought solely because I could get a 20-ft extension cord.

I think the manufacturer should have been candid about the distance this cord actually will reach -- which is only about half the stated distance. Saying "up to 20 feet" is, IMO, an unreasonable exaggeration.

  • Works great for me!

    By A101243KMUIJC0 on 2006-03-27
Maybe Maxell has redesigned the cord since the previous set of reviews, but it is working great for me.
I was very hesitant to buy the the cord because of the past poor reviews but figured it was worth giving a chance since all I wanted to do was be able to listen to Napster while running on my treadmill at home and my other alternatives were either 1) buy an MP3 player (expensive) or 2) crank up the volume on the computer loud enough to be heard over the motor of the treadmill (not too nice for the rest of the family). I have the cord stretched to it's full 20' length, from one room into another, with no loss in sound quality and the connections have all stayed tight and never popped loose (something that has surprised me given the tension on the cord).

  • Capable but heavy.

    By on 2001-01-31
Does the job very nicely, but is heavy and tends to pull your 'phones out of position.

  • great little cord

    By A1VYVVA7QS09PA on 2005-02-25
I've had good sound quality from this cord, even when running the signal to amplified speakers that fill up the room. It's true that the length is understated but I only needed about 10 feet so it's fine for my purposes. I plan on getting a second one for my other computer system.

  • Long cord didn't work

    By A254J09KGGJ1DQ on 2005-03-19
The long cord simply didn't work. I returned it to Maxell, using the address on the back of the package, and had the product returned to me because the facility has closed. I've spent almost $5 trying to return an $8 product.

  • Fulfills its purpose well
    By AM6DI1Z67MLMI on 2001-09-16
I know others have commented that the cord is rather heavy, but the connection snaps very tight between the headphones and the extender, so you don't need to worry about them separating with a sudden movement. Great alternative to wireless headphones, and useful if you alternate an your computer or stereosystem between headphones and speakers ( it comes with a y connector, allowing you to plug two devices into one output source). My only objection is the price, but it's tough to find products out there like this.

  • Worked as expected
    By A1YGKTKVY8WRPZ on 2006-11-09
This extension cord did what it was supposed to do and did it just fine. No problems whatsoever.

  • Very good
    By A1I9F5ZP3XU0VT on 2007-07-23
Many of the other reviews have already touched on the ups and downs of this product. The sound quality and durability are very good, and the adapters are very handy--especially the two-prong airplane adapter. The cord is a bit heavy, but that comes with it's length and sturdy construction.

Here's a tip: I needed an extension because I move around a lot in my office. I don't often have to leave my chair, though--I just roll around between bookcases, filing cabinets, and my desk. What I've done is attach a velcro tie to the end of the extension cord near where the headphones plug in. Then I can quickly tie it to the arm of my chair. The cable stretches to let me reach any part of the room, and I have enough length on the headphone cord to allow me to stand up. Since the only weight on the headphones comes from their own cord, I don't notice the weight of the extension.

  • Nice
    By on 2001-06-05
It is kinda heavy but great, its got plenty of adapters to do all sorts of stuff, such as plug in 2 headphones to the same spot and other stuff, kinda expensive but still the best buy for this kind of product.

  • Read carefully before purchasing
    By A28X7NZ02016FO on 2007-12-29
The product is "20ft coiled", for anyone not reading the description carefully. This means it doesn't start off at 20ft, but stretches out to 20ft.

  • Headphones
    By A2N1RBIDZXLI4 on 2007-01-04
    Headphones are lightweight and comfortable.
The extension allows me to comfortably listen to TV in bed.

    Great product

  • Works well - Excellent for the office cubicle!
    By A17MYRB2ZMGNF4 on 2007-09-06
I found this product to work well and serve the purpose of sound control in my cubicle at the office. The cord is long enough to move around easily and I can even use just one earpiece when/if I am needing to listen for visitors, etc.
I found it to be well worth the price.

  • False Advertisment
    By A334F73BQEKUZQ on 2008-04-12
Unstretched, the cord is literally 5 feet long. I bought it for my headphones, my t.v. is about 10 feet away. I need to stretch the cord a lot just so it works. At least the adapters are cool.

  • decent product, unaccurate description
    By AY28RAFQ7RS36 on 2008-05-24
I ordered this to hook up stereo headphones to my DVD player, and was impressed by the advertised "20-ft. cord." Yes, the wired cord can be extended to 20 feet, but to expect that it would stay in the jack at 20 feet would be unrealistic. Fortunately, I only needed a few feet. The adapters that come with it are useful, if you have uses for them. Overall, decent product for the price. (Elsewhere just a set of four adapters would cost over $10.)

  • false advertising
    By A1OQJBYMMBRC6C on 2008-07-14
This chord is really about half the length they claim. The coiled part is impossible to fully extend, but the only way this chord would be the length they claimed would be if you could uncoil this. Also because it has a huge coiled up part in the middle the chord is very heavy. If you do not place something on top of it to secure it you may find the chord's weight pulling your ear plugs from your ears.

It does work fine however, just be aware the length is much shorter then they claim, and the chord is heavy.

  • rarely works
    By on 2004-07-17
Most of the time sounds through this cord are much quiter than they sound when I hook the headphones up directly to the source. When it isn't so quiet (this cord is temperamental) odd noises are accentuated, and speech is garbled. I could of course just have a faulty one, and most might conduct sounds perfectly. I'm giving one star to my specific cord.

  • Good buy
    By A63B9F4ZS8KNE on 2007-11-07
Great deal for the money I bought this for the cord but have used the adapters and I am buying another.

  • Good sound quality
    By AZEJQATB4U7SI on 2007-11-08
I think some of the more negative reviews may not be considering that the quality of the sound will depend a lot on what you plug into the extension cord. After all this thing is just a wire. I bought this so I would not have to fiddle with the controls on a home theater system that would otherwise boom everybody awake if I'm watching a movie late at night. Of course it doesn't have the same fidelity or frequency response of the speakers, but it is quite acceptable when used with a pair of noise cancelling headphones of decent quality.

  • You need this!
    By A2L802OQB1JKN2 on 2007-12-12
You need this. Especially the extension cord. Noticed how the cord of headphones has gotten shorter and shorter? I use it at the office to listen to whatever on my computer which is under the desk and away from where I sit, impossible to use the headphones *and* be at a normal position at the same time. I use it at home when watching TV next to another person reading the paper. Without the extension the TV is not far enough for me to see the entire screen.

We use the extension and double plug to watch movies on the computer when away from home and our nice Bose computer speakers. We use it to connect the CD/Radio to the Bose speakers (instead of its own). We use it. We use it a lot.

The adapters were not my reason for buying this. They were just an extra bonus. Especially the splitter.

  • Free to move about my desk
    By A3IAU5V7ZUAXI2 on 2008-04-04
I needed a few extra feet of cord to be plugged in and still be able to move around my desk at work - this extension cord does the trick. The connection to my earbud jack is snug and doesn't come unplugged without a bit of tugging. I like to listen to streaming music during the day, and the quality through this cord was fine. It also comes with four adapters, which I haven't tried yet, but I know the dual headphone adapter will come in handy.

  • Headphone Extension Cord with Adapters
    By A2424YRQZO9LE0 on 2008-04-05
This is perfect for smaller rooms when you need to be mobile while listening to good music. Great reception with good headphones. Much lighter weight than the older extension cords.

  • Great Purchase
    By A17M3AHPX41XXR on 2008-06-09
This really worked out well for me. Now I can plug my speakers and my headset into my audio card. The only other thing that would have been nice is a mute switch for the mic. But for the price it's GREAT!

  • Very handy!
    By AUBKXJYRKGOF4 on 2008-06-10
This extension cord is a lifesaver. I recently installed a very noisy air conditioner in my apartment and as a result I could not hear my TV without blasting the sound. Not wanting to be "that neighbor," I invested in this cord so I could watch TV with headphones. I'll echo what others have said: the cord transmits sound very well even through my rinky little iPod headphones, though the coil is pretty tight and reaching to 20 feet is a stretch (pun slightly intended). I'm fine with that because the jacks on the cord are very secure (no slipping) and I only need about 10 feet of extension, but if you're looking to use this for longer distances, then I'd suggest buying two cords. Still, ten bucks is a good value for this handy little product.

  • Works as advertised, nice
    By A335QXPTV1RIV1 on 2008-06-12
This is working out perfectly well as an extension for a pair of earphones for my aunt, who is hard of hearing and wanted a means to watch TV without disturbing neighbors. It comes with a variety of attachments which is a plus.
