  • More twisted genius from Harmony Special K-orine

    By A1Z055CGRJARWE on 2001-06-23
Extraordinary second film from Harmony Korine. A portrait of a disfunctional American Family, with career performances from Ewen Bremner as the schizophrenic Julien, Chloe Sevigny as his heavily pregnant sister Pearl, and legendary German director as his overbearing and eccentric father. If you liked "Gummo", Korine's first film, you will assuredly love this film. However, if you despised Gummo for its lack of plot and linear narrative, I still would not necessarily advise you to steer clear. Although the style is again disconnected and fragmented, this time the events that unfold have a markedly more cohesive feel than in Korine's debut. Ewen Bremner is startlingly good as Julien - check his rambling psychobabble as he walks through the city, confusing passers by with lines such as the memorable and hilarious "Excuse me, is my family tree this tree, or that tree?" (Korine used hidden cameras for many scenes, in order to capture genuine reactions from unsuspecting interlopers and therefore, as Korine explains in the "making of.." documentary which supplements the film on the dvd version, "capture something real"). Werner Herzog is equally good as his father - you often feel that it is no wonder that Julien is so messed up, considering the way his dad treats him (and indeed the rest of the family) Chloe Sevigny also shines - this time as Julien's sister, who provides Julien with a mother figure (and a lot more besides!!!), the mother of the family having passed away many years ago. A genuinely original, affecting and at times frankly hilarious movie, you really should not miss it.

Although not for everyone, JDB is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word. If the highest goal of art and cinema is to realistically portray human life and emotion, as imperfect and ugly as it can get most of the time, then this movie succeeds on every level. You're literally brought into the mind of a young schizophrenic and his world, and watching this movie is a lot of work like films should be. Who wants to know what line is coming next like in 95% of Hollywood shlock? At the end of it all, you feel like you've just run a marathon although you've never left your couch, an like all of Korine's films, you're left feeling dirty and used. This is good! Emotionally, you can't help but be drawn into this world and feel the insanity and it is very unsettling. Visually, the grainy DV film and hand held camera work all add to the overall emotion and the editing and cinematogrophy are suberb! Really cutting edge stuff from a destructionist standpoint, where polished dialogue, posh sets and Hollywood extravagence are thrown out the window for reality. I've seen many films in my days and this one is groundbreaking in my view and sets the bar higher for other avante-garde filmakers. You owe in to yourself as a member of the human race to check this movie out.

  • A beautiful film

    By A3GQ2W0OJF0GBQ on 2001-02-13
This is definitely a film worth seeing, despite what the naysayers have spewed forth. It flows from the same river of feeling that Gummo comes from, but is a much sweeter, fuller, more mature work. One could even say that it is a heart-warming experience. Shot on digital video following the Dogma 95 tenets, it has a great performance by Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting) as the title character. Werner Herzog is a riot as the abusive but well-meaning father, and Chloe Sevigny plays her under-stated, supporting role subtly and deftly. Its been over a year since I've seen the film (and I'm in a small minority, to be sure)... it's arrival on DVD is long overdue. If you aren't a fan of Korine and aren't sure you'd plunk down that much scratch for a film based on some stranger's advice, then please implore your local video store to purchase a copy.

  • Not like Gummo or Kids!

    By AXD98Z7MBW3G4 on 2001-07-20
I was waiting for this movie to come out on DVD only to find out it was a big dissapointment. The filming is grainy, supposed to be hip and stylish but I think it's very annoying. The movie 'Kids' and 'Gummo' where much better, this movie is nothing like them. Also the blatant promoting of his wife featured in every one of his movies is getting old too. Harmony Korine, sorry to say pal, you just went from my hero to a big zero!

  • What a waste of money to make this movie. Give the funds to education!

    By A1LJR5IS0B6ADX on 2006-05-11
When you watch this movie you are suppose to see the effects of schizophrenia on family life. YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO FEEL SCHIZOPHRENIC!!!!! My God, I didn't think anything could be worst than Gummo, but I was wrong. At least Gummo was funny, stupid and lame as all hell, but funny. The coolest part in this was the black albino rapping. Watching this movie I wanted to kill myself. Put a bomb in my mouth and sing "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood" until it explodes. I also know some hip indie movie reviewer on Amazon will give my review of this movie a poor rating, "Because I am missing the vision of the director's notion of schizophrenia". You want a notion of schizophrenia? Look it up in the DSM.

  • fun with mediocrity
    By A1EHMXX5P3UB4X on 2001-09-01
I think that there should be a new rule added to the Dogma 95.

And that, of course, would be: You have to be a good film maker to begin with.

I find Harmony to be quiet charming when I watch him pontificate about changing the direction of cinema and achieving something real and groundbreaking (it's like I'm back in high school!!!) but then to sit through this movie really really, put a test on my nerves. This is one of those films that you watch all the way through for the SOLE purpose of feeling like you can really go to town when you say that it was bad, that the ending was anything but "transcendant" and that just because you find a bunch of oddities to cast, doesn't make anyone, at all, care. Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad.

Cloe Sevigny does bring a nice relaxed, and as much as this film would allow, intrigueing nature to her part, but that's as good as I can say about it.

And just for future referance, letting actors improvise their scenes is generally a POOR DIRECTOR'S CHOICE. The actors will, 9 tens out of 10, get into a fight, and/or just repeat themselves, yes, repeat, repeat, repeat the same variation of a line over and over and over again. Watch this film, then watch Buffalo 66 and then hammer a nail through your forehead.

I gave this 1 star: one for Cloe and an imaginary one for Werner Herzog, who wasn't good by any means, but he is Werner Herzog, after all.

    THIS IS DRECK!

  • I thought it would be good because of all the good reviews.
    By A24W9XNPGA3JCU on 2003-12-30
But it wasn't. Yeah it's weird and I appreciate that, but I think you should be prepared before watching it by knowing that it has absolutely no plot what so ever. At least gummo has some sort of story. I could barely finish watching this movie, don't waste your time with it.

  • Harmony Korine is a Wunderkind
    By A1W3FS1C2H4RCV on 2004-04-25
I can't believe how young this guy is. He was eighteen when he wrote KIDS. That just blows me away. KIDS is a great film, but it is a Larry Clark film. This is a Harmony Korine film and it is truly something to behold.

I am willing to make the bold statement that Korine is the best American film maker making moivies today. Why? Because his films are so bold. He has faith in his own aesthetic and that gives his work a sincerity, an originality, and a power that most films lack. He has a vision and then he realizes it. This weird little skateboarder is an artist.

This is a movie for the true lover of the medium. If you have to have a linear plot line, pretty characters, or car chases, this movie is not for you. If you like convention, you will not like Harmony's movies. But if you are a fan of honest, iconoclastic art, buy Julien Donkey Boy.

I loved Werner Herzog as the crazy father.

  • Some brief remarks
    By A3LEXQIEBNGA1F on 2005-09-04
If you want traditional narrative (you know, a plot) and you think people talking gibberish are mentally ill, then you probably should avoid this movie (unless you like to mock or feel superior to others, which some of you probably do). If you are able to listen and to share the lived experience of other people, this is one hell of a good movie - your world will expand a little, which is what I like art to be about.

  • A haunting, strange, at times hallucinatory film....
    By A2UYAFQ40U2PHS on 2006-07-29
I remember seeing this with only 5 other people in the theater. No one left until the final credits were over. It then took almost 2 years to get to home video. I think this is an amazing film. Like Gummo, the plot of the film is unimportant. If you tell people what it is, they'll misunderstand it. The way the story is told here is what is most important. Korine is one of the few independent filmmakers out there that is truly independent, in that his films are not for the mainstream. There is no crossover appeal in julien donkey-boy (or Gummo), and Korine is not interested in it anyway. This film feels like a poem, or a piece of music, in which the feeling is most important, not a linear timeline. The whole here is greater than the parts, as opposed to most films, in which there are (sometimes) great setpieces in them, but as a film they're quite often uneven and disjointed. There are disturbing scenes (wouldn't be Korine if there wasn't), but it all seems to work here. Wonderful to see Werner Herzog as well. Excellent film...

  • Inspiring
    By A3741NY1T25XWW on 2004-05-05
I think we should celebrate these types of films. This has been done very well. Just like any good film, there has been lots of thought put into what type of camera work...for example when time Julien's face is shown walking down the street with his curly hair glowing in that surreal sort of way. Maybe it's that I'm a very accepting person but the `disturbing' scenes in this didn't bother me at all. It definitely was not boring, I found it very entertaining, which is the purpose of a movie, is it not? And I felt relieved to be watching something different, being a dogma 95 film (I think it is?). I'm not too sure of the rules in dogma but this is an independent/underground type film for sure. Anyway, let's not complain about a film like this because the intentions are good and it itself is good, which compared to the rest of movies out today is very nice to see. I give it a five. Loved it.
    -Cheers

  • dIDN'T know what to expect
    By A2WNINSZAPU2PM on 2004-12-16
Well.I thought the movie was better than expected. I thought it was going to be plotless like some reviewers said, or really really good. Frist of all it is not plotless, it does have definite meaning although it goes off to a slow start. I mean you kind of realize how messed up this family is at the first sight, you know something is not right, and at the end you really see, and realize that you know people are living just like this in America, maybe not a mirror image but pretty damn similar. So, give it a chance, it's not like it's a 3-hour long movie, watch it and decide for yourself!

  • Schlock disguised as "art"
    By A1AOFTWRM3O14O on 2007-05-28
The trouble with reviewing films like this is that there is the pretentious crowd that think if you don't like it, then you don't understand it. I liken this group to soccer fans. Even though their "sport" is boring, overlong, dull, and structurally unsound, the fans look down on anyone who doesn't like it.
This film, like most in the Dogme 95 style, is a lot like the previously stated view of soccer. The arthouse crowd will be all over it because it uses no artificial lighting, costumes, etc. and they are smarter than you and I because they like it. In reality, however, it seems after viewing this film that a 14-year-old got a bunch of his buddies together and pieced together different incoherent scenes with a couple of digital cameras and hidden video.
I have to give this crowd credit, because it seems that they can slap anything on film, give it a pretentious name like "Dogme 95" and get away with it because if you don't like it, then you just aren't smart enough to "get it".
I think I will make a Dogme 95 movie. The next time I need to have a bowel movement, I will take along the old Sony Handycam. I won't use any artificial light, except for the bathroom 60-watt halogen, and film it from beginning to end. I will film lots of close-ups and hold the camera at weird angles to really call myself a "filmmaker". If you don't like my movie, then you just don't understand it. Please pass the green tea and the organic cucumber slices, I have a tree hugging meeting at 4:30.

  • Finally a GREAT FILM
    By A28CVJ48ISKFXB on 2001-04-19
Finally and American produces a film that is worth seeing. This film is not like any comercial film you see in the main-stream theaters.....this is REAL CINEMA!!! Harmony Korine takes us where movies should take us.....to the unknown....anyone can figure the ending to most HOLLYWOOD films but Julien Donkey-Boy you are wondering "if you should cross the street" this movie is a must see if you are into independent type films or are into film makers like Werner Herzog or Lars Von Terre

  • You must understand...
    By A1KR0GEBX7XXVX on 2006-02-15
Okay, in the world of cinema, this movie is not a five star film. BUT for what it tries to accomplish, it is. This is a Dogme 95 film. For those of you who do not know what it is: it is a set of obstructions that the director must follow as an "experiement." The director isn't supposed to put in his own "taste", yet just try to reveal his story through the characters. Some of the rules are: The camera must be handheld the entire time, no artificial lighting, MUST be shot on location, no artificial sound like music, etc. There are I believe 10 rules like these created by the danish filmmakers Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg. Almost as a joke, they created these obstructions, and this film follows them. So keep that in mind when viewing this film. It is Dogme 95.

  • JulienDonkey-Boy
    By A34D06JL7LC6MU on 2006-06-22
Harmony Korine's "Julien Donkey-Boy" takes a break from the shocking vulgarity that was portrayed in the last film he wrote & directed "Gummo"
and the first film that he wrote "Kids". Both of those films, while Gummo still tends to turn people off, are masterpieces in the sense that they are both disturbing, true, and important. "Julien Donkey-Boy" gives us, basically, a tour into the mind of a schizophrenic boy named Julien. But, how do you sum up this movie with a proper synopsis? Well, first off...This movie could've taken a lot of different directions and it's clear what Korine's goal was in making the film. Having said that, I understand why the cinematography is so screwed up. I mean, this is the grainiest movie you'll ever see and while I appreciate that use of cinematography in several films, it wasn't used through the entire movie. There are times when you can barely see the characters face as a result of it. But, as I said, I know that was the point...I just wanted to mention how annoying it can be. The movie's plot is kind of "eh." Because, it seems that Korine wanted to tell the story in a way that Julien would see it. It won't always make sense. In the middle of the movie, Julien makes a call to what seems to be his sister Pearl (Chloe Sevigny) and confused the hell out of me. I realized Korine would probably provide closure at the end and he kind of did...But not quite. Before I give you my hack-eyed view of the plot, I will say that this movie did work on a number of levels. Korine did justice to the character, the operatic score is very good, and the performances are powerful and sometimes a little too real. But some of the most impressive parts of the movie, don't even really have to do with the movie. Seeing an armless man play drums with his feet, seeing an Albino black man freestyle, it was pretty trippy s**t. Anyways, the plot is basically this...Julien (Ewen Bremner, who is so good it's amazing he's not really like this) is a schizophrenic boy who lives with his pregnant sister Pearl, his brother Chris, and his abusive father. When the movie does take place in the house, we see Julien trying to fit in and notice that Pearl is the only one who's nice to him. His father puts down everyone in the house for one thing or another, Chris could've been erased from the movie and it would still be the same. Anyways, that's about all I can say on the plot...But, I would recommend you not buy this movie before having seen it. If you have a big appreciation for films and for filmmaking, then you should at least enjoy this movie a little bit. There are some really powerful elements to it, especially in the final scene. It's not a masterpiece and there are several things Korine could've done to make it better, but in it's own odd way "Julien Donkey-Boy" is a haunting portrait that doesn't try to make anything look nicer than it really is.

    GRADE: B-

  • Stunning Achievement
    By A2NPB2LQYZWCTB on 2001-04-14
The level of reality is incredible. Herzog is unforgettable. Avoids every cliche, hits hard, takes you into another world more real than the one you will encounter when you walk out of the movie house. I am hoping for some sort of release of HK's fight project footage but I'm grateful for this film. He doesn't get mainstream respect but as the saying goes "a real artist is either despised or despicable" and he is not despicable.

Goodness, I'd like to put it straight . . . I've read the other reviews. This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE movie. It makes me cry in several scenes. Some are funny, but most of it is rather disturbing. I think people who give this movie a bad review are super-insensitive to schizophrenia and family dysfunction. It is a LOT of dysfunction for one family, but name one movie that doesn't exhaggerate a little bit! I would recommend this movie to ANYONE. I saw it in my local coffee shop/theatre twice, and now own it. Closed minded insensitive people . . . well, I can't speak for you . . . this movie opened my eyes wider than they were before. Perhaps it would open yours too!

  • Still utterly unimpressed...
    By A34B9AJ9IXD8F on 2002-01-11
I saw this movie originally in the NY Film Festival and something must be seriously wrong with me because, unlike so many obviously sensible viewers, I remain unimpressed. The performances are very good, the movie (as expected) feels almost like a docummentary, but I still find the over-the-top disfunctionality of the family portrayed there almost funny. Or was it a parody of disfunctional family movies and we did not get it? Was not Dogma (among other things) about realism in the movies?
Buy Dancer in the Dark instead!

  • If I were so stupid, I would slap my own face
    By ATWK744FUQXVX on 2005-10-30
I don't have much to say about this film other than that it is extremely bizarre, disjointed, mostly incoherent, and surreal. At times its almost as if it was filmed in the attempt to show the world through a skitzophrenic's eyes. Werner Herzog plays this creepy, gas mask wearing lisping father who tries to pay his son ten dollars to dress up like his dead mother and dance with him. That, for me, was the highlight of the entire movie. The rest of the film is difficult to pay attention to as the camera follows Julien throughout his day as he goes to work as an aid to blind people (watch out for the blind black albino), goes ice skating,
pretends an almost completely incoherent conversation between Hitler and God, wrestles with a brother that is almost pathologically obsessed with "winning" because of a father who constantly degrades him by treating him like a loser, and spirals further and further into madness. Although, "Julien Donkey-Boy" seems to be plotless during the first ten to twenty minutes of this strange film, it certainly follows a linear story, but is so
wildly disjointed and interspersed with so many random camera tricks and surreal scenes that I found myself beginning to daydream throughout the duration of the movie. "Julien Donkey-Boy" is not an enjoyable movie to watch and seems to have been made entirely for "art's" sake. Abstract, nihilistic, and not in any way as good as "Gummo," (in fact, I liked "Kids" more than this film and I wasn't that impressed by that movie either), "Julien Donkey-Boy" is only a film for those who liked boring and poorly done "art" films such as "Begotten."

  • So nearly perfect
    By AST2LBYVPBP96 on 2006-04-18
To represent the life of a schizophrenic through film, one would be wise to choose Dogme 95, as the life of these unfortunate people seems to be affected by and largely governed by a series of rigid and obtuse beliefs, regimens or rituals put in place to form some sort of foundation in an otherwise random, "crazy" existance. Since these "rules" they live by come from insanity in the first place, and are not typically adaptable, or flexible, as life would require them to be, everything they attempt becomes convoluted and lost in madness and confusion. Dogme 95, with its odd, rigid requirements, vis-a-vis the "Vow of Chastity" (www.dogme95.dk) goes a long way toward capturing that dynamic. This film comes pretty close to nailing the day-in, day-out obstacles that mentally ill people must encounter, making something as simple as a bus ride to work a harrowing adventure frought with slopes. Bremner is brilliant. I didn't even recognize him, and afterward I believed that he should have been awarded for this outing - just completely convincing. Almost as if this were a documentary. Not hugely entertaining in terms of plot, but a real treat for someone who wants to be compelled by the film maker's art. Harmony Corine is way smarter than me and you, folks. And I think it's way cool he can get his hands on film equipment. He is pushing the envelope, which is a lot more than I can say for most directors. Safe is boring. Regard this film in the context of the first scene and a plot emerges. What we see within the first two or three minutes is astoundingly disturbing, and will clearly have consequences on the rest of Julien's life. Relate the rest of the film back to the first scene, and it's really rather sad.

  • FANTASTIC, a true work of art! Dogma Masterpiece!
    By A2X84FUK152ASF on 2006-12-24
This film rejuvenated my passion in contemporary cinema! This a dogma film which means it is a film to the most opposite extreme from hollywood. Hundreds of hours of digital filmed with a handy-cam, later edited, and then transferred to 35mm. No big hollywood stars, a budget under or around a million. The grain from the transfer is unbelievably beautiful and unique. Werner herzog does a fantastic performance in this film! This movie is birazze, it is unlike any other, well...maybe influenced by the great werner herzog, but this film is absolutely it's own! A lot of scenes will make you uncomfortable, or you'll be laughing in a new way, because of the insanity he captured! Pure and raw talent. Open your mind and Give this film a chance!

one of the best movies to come out in 2000 or any year. bold kinetic, beautifully shot, this is pure emotional, devestating force. korine's style develops from gummo- he is really creating poetry on film. great performance by werner herzog as well. if you like the dogma films 'celebration' and 'idiots' youll like this too.

  • Great film that stumbles a little.
    By AIFAJMXXND65C on 2001-03-28
I'm only docking this film one star, even though i should probably dock it two. Yes, it's visually stunning, and the acting is amazing--- particularly Ewen Bremner and Werner Herzog. But Korine's direction isn't as tight as it could be. He spends a little too much time lingering on scenes that don't really service the narrative. The "freestlye rap" scene and the scene at the church near the end of the film are prime examples of this. Of course, it could be that Harmony and I had different opinions of what was interesting. When the film is "on," however, it stomps all over pretty much anything I've seen in the past few years--- incuding "Gummo" and "Kids"--- for pure, emotional realism in film. It's probably a masterpiece, and it's *completely* worth your time.

  • Julien and Fondue
    By A38SHUFPDTOHE5 on 2001-04-05
Well worth it. I recommend having a fondue party and wearing your grandmother's best moomoo. Definitely put the hair in rollers, and black knee highs will only add to the viewing enjoyment. Harmony has outdone himself with this one! Somewhat loose in the beginning, but by time the cheese is running low, you'll find yourself in heaven. The added commentary at the end makes it well worth the duckets you'll drop. A real family movie. Watch it again and again.

  • "Don't like the artsy-fartsy"
    By A2W0KEX0D20K4C on 2002-09-12
While not quite the freakshow of "Gummo", "Julien Donkey Boy" is still a difficult watch. While compelled to take in the effects of schizophrenia on your average dysfunctional family, the video effects make ordinary scenes a torture to sit through. There seems to be a need for realism, but these cutaways to other jarring images in slow motion are slightly self-indulgent (Uhh - I believe the whole point of Dogme95 was not to be self-indulgent or what you can do with your cameras slow shutter speed.)
Performances by Ewen Bremmer, Werner Herzog and Chloe Sevigny are worthwhile. The actors improv adds to Korine's trademark neo-documentary style, but there doesn't seem to be much narrative plot they can follow. He also does lapse into his habit of unflinchingly looking at the grotesque, deformed, or freakish - which in this context, could be gratuitous considering the subject matter. His earlier film "Gummo" at least put his desolate subjects more into context.

  • A Unique Slice Of Life
    By on 2003-03-18
Haarmony Korine's second film set out to push a few envelopes and break a few boundaries. Adhering to Dogme 95's strict vow of chastity, this is clearly Korine's "art" picture (not meaning to take away from his excellent first film, "Gummo").

This is a portrait of a young man named Julien and his family.

My personal favorite was Dad: Calls his kids (Julien, Pearl, and Chris) losers, failures, etc. Wants his two boys Julien and Chris to be "champions, and winners." Although he was supposed to be the comic relief, I think Korine wants us to read deeper into the character. He misses his wife, and wishes that his kids could have turned out better.

The kids all seem to get along and you get a mother-son connection between Julien and Pearl (his younger sister).

There is really no plot which isn't necessarily a bad thing because it gives the viewer the impression that whatever was captured on camera would have gone on regardless of whether it was recorded or not-- I like that. I got the same impression from "Gummo," as well.

I only recommend it to someone who is really into movies.

As far as acting goes, the performances were outstanding. Again, it made you feel as though this was really happening. Also, Korine used hidden cameras and local people (who weren't real actors or actresses) to capture that lifelike essence.

All in all, it was a good movie. Some scenes went on too long. Others madee me wonder why they were even included in the film. It was very hard to watch at times, but then again, isn't life the same way?

PS: You'll NEVER forget the ending!

  • Beautiful
    By A2W23P9DENEG5G on 2003-05-29
This is one of my all time favorite films. It is artwork. No, not the standard a, b, c, plot story telling most people in the states expect. I didn't find the plot fragmented. In the vein of foreign films , I did find it abstract in the sense that the viewer gets to draw their own conclusions and interpret action. The character Julien didn't seem any more insane than any other member of the family... I felt more a story of isolation and acceptance mixed in to the very real occurence of bad genetics. Was it clear the Mother died? Or was she institutionalized or did she abandon the family? If dark is your ticket then this is the film for you... I also found it very sexy. The clear ogling of Julliene of his pregnant sisters breasts, the interplay between them on the phone with her pretending to be his Mother with Julliene fondling himself absent mindedly in a childlike way... the father played by Werner *the performance!!!* demanding the second son wear his Mothers clothes and dance with him romantically.. and upon the sons refusal the offering of money for the dance... and the blind preteen getting her feet washed by Julliene, the giggling and tickling... the maturity of the child juxtapose against the immaturity of J and his sister. Was the brother even a real wrestler? or did he only wear the uniform and train? Very sexy film plus thought provoking. Even with the paculiarities these people fit into society.. they didn't seem to strike anyone as overly odd... from the black church to the blind social club. What commentary does that make? Step beyond the literal when watching this film and salute Harmony as a genius. Love Love Love this movie.
