a multi-purpose kitchen essential By AUITG1DJ3QUGK on 2004-11-10
This has to be one of the best deals around, even at twice the price, because it replaces so many other things, and is so durable.
The containers work nicely for food storage, but they also can be used for cooking. They go from freezer to oven or microwave, and are dishwasher safe as well. Pyrex is practically unbreakable. With normal use, this set could easily last a lifetime. At the current price, they actually cost less than plastic containers, which do not have either the durability or versatility.
If all that's not enough, consider the health benefits. Glass will not leech plasticiser into your food, and there's no dioxin to worry about when microwaving.
I don't usually rave about kitchen items, but after I recieved this set, I rushed back to order another. I'm getting rid of most of the plastics in my cabinets today!
Great alternative to plastic By A1FMWLZ9YY91XI on 2005-01-28
I bought these containers for one reason...plastic containers smell. They absorb colors and odors and over time, this becomes both ugly and unpalatable. They also are prone to melting and warping, both in the microwave and in the dishwasher. Glass seemed to be a natural solution to these problems, so we bought this set.
The Pyrex containers are great for solid food. Tomato-based pastas don't stain; garlickly foods don't leave an awful residual smell; and since glass is a better heat conductor, they're more optimal in the microwave than plastic. Heed the other reviewers' warnings regarding liquid storage; the lids are probably the weakest point. For liquid, we use Nalgene containers, which never, ever leak (backpackers use them religiously).
Great product, glass is very durable and difficult to break By A1115ST6F5CWYP on 2006-06-27
A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry. Cooking is my form of therapy. I have owned my set of these for at least 5 years, and possibly longer. I have not broken a single piece in that time. This may not sound like much but I am hard on things, and for all of them to still be intact is a minor miracle in my home. The glass is very tough.
Pros:
1. Glass is very tough, seems almost indestructible
2. I like that they are not plastic, so I feel safe about reheating food in them
3. The lids fit well for the first 4 years or so
4. Replacement lids are available at the Corning and Revere Factory Outlet stores
5. These containers fit well into lunch bags so that you family can take your healthy home cooked food to work or school.
6. The containers stack well inside each other for space cramped kitchens
7. You can bake in these and then cool the food (I place the entire container into a roasting pan filled with ice water) put on the lid and slide the pan into the refrigerator.
8. You freeze can food in these containers
Cons:
1. The lids do stretch and warp over time, I recommend buying extra lids before you need them. My lids lasted approximately 4 years.
Overall, I would recommend these to anyone that likes to cook in quantity and doesn't like to reheat food in plastic. I use these everyday in my kitchen.
Pyrex drops the ball By A1SCANWWQTEG9I on 2007-02-26
I purchased this exact same set 3 years ago and loved it. Recently I decided to do away with all my plastic containers and switch solely to glass so I purchased another set. The first set I got the lids wouldn't even go on the round containers. I called Pyrex to complain but they sent me to Amazon customer service instead. I found it odd that they didn't want to hear about their defective product. Anyway, Amazon replaced the set promptly and without hassle. The second set I got had almost the same problem! The lids are extremely hard to get on (only on the round containers) They are indented so far that they almost go inside the bowls instead of out. Maybe it was just one batch of the product but I would be leery of buying them again especially since Pyrex doesn't seem to stand behind their product. Thank goodness Amazon does.
10-Piece Set with Lids By A39DQWH38ARGZG on 2005-12-14
I purchased this set , things were ok for a short time
I was baking chicken and It sounded like an explosion in my kitchen
well the glass shattered in my oven into little pieces
I got rid of the whole set
never again will I use the type of cookware
- Good for storing, heating - not for traveling
     By A8K8G06FCBADO on 2005-02-26
I purchased some of these about two years ago. Love the idea of storing in glass, not plastic - no absorbing odors, no more red pasta sauce stains, etc. But, if you're taking them to work, beware. The lids on mine were tight, then after a couple of washings in the dishwasher (supposed to be safe for this) they no longer fit the bowls and have a tendency to slip off.
- Avoid it!
     By ASTOMNXCHLQZW on 2005-12-04
I bought a 10 piece set at Bed Bath and Beyond two years ago. I was doing the dishes and the pan i made lasagna in fell into the sink from the dish rack and it made a huge "bam!" but the pyrex wasn't damaged so i put it back on the rack and walked away (thank God). About ten seconds later I heard an explosion... the pyrex shattered with shards of glass all over my kitchen. Needless to say, I carefully took all of my pyrex out of my cupboards and chucked it. I still freak out when ever I think of all the potential things that could have happened if I or my kids were in the kitchen when that happened.
- Keeps your produce fresh!
     By A3H9EVZR6Y76S0 on 2005-03-15
I did not buy this set from amazon, but from kmart instead. But I just had to come here and write a review for these amazing storage bowls.
We bought a head of butter lettuce 6 weeks ago. I had no place to store it in the humidity bin in our fridge, so I plucked all the leaves off the lettuce and put them in the 7 cup round bowl. Then I put the bowl in the fridge and forgot all about it.
Come tonight, I am cleaning the fridge and find the bowl with the lettuce still in there. I was curious as to how well the bowl worked, so I thought I would try a couple lettuce leaves.
The results?
THEY ARE AS FRESH TASTING AND AS CRISPY AS THE DAY I BOUGHT THEM!!! I am not kidding! Absolutely zero wilting, decay or even mold. Now if that isn't amazing storage, I really don't know what is. Keep a head of lettuce in a plastic bag for a week in the fridge and see what it turns into.
I also tried a leaking test after I read some of the reviews here. Mine didn't leak any liquid at all and I tipped the bowl several times.
If you do buy these bowls in person rather than online, check the lids - make sure they are tight fitting. I did this and my bowls have never failed me. I also handwash the bowls and lids, so I'm not sure if that also keeps them in good shape, as opposed to the dishwasher.
Glass is extremely hygienic, does not carry odours and is so easy to clean - it doesn't stain unlike plastic!
I'm soooo excited that the Pyrex bowls kept the lettuce fresh. They worked even better than our humidity bin! I should call Westinghouse and tell them!
I can't wait till they are on sale again so I can get more. They are wonderful and so worth the cost even if they aren't on sale.
- these are great for packing lunch to work
     By A5LHU203YCF7Y on 2005-04-14
they come in different sizes so you can pack whatever you like. I haven't had any problems with leakages, the lids are pretty tight. Just make sure you handwash the lids so they don't end up warping like typical plastic tupperware, though I've thrown mine into the dishwasher dozens of times and the lids are still fine.
These are great not only for packing lunches, but also for steaming and baking small food proportions!
The only "problem" I have with these is like any dish you nuke for a few minutes, it gets super hot and hard to grab on to. Just make sure when you get these out of the microwave to use some mitts (I use a few layers of paper towels, scrunch them up and grab onto the dish) before you drop the whole thing.
- Great for storage but be aware they are not watertight
     By A3QPX6A8MU4717 on 2005-01-01
When on discount these are a bargain for durable food storage that will not leach plasticizers into your food. But be aware that they are not watertight. Liquids will leak slowly if tipped, so these are not suitable for transporting your leftover soup to work.
- Small, but handy
     By A3UZKHULL9LP9A on 2005-10-26
When I initially received these I was disappointed by how small they were (I didn't read the description) I have bought another set since them because I absolutely LOVE THEM. These are the perfect size for one or two serving make ahead meals for 1 or 2. Good for soups or casseroles. Straight from the freezer to the microwave or oven so my poor hubby has something to decent to eat when I am not able to cook.
- Beware, Items are Small
     By AAILFT8641S2T on 2005-12-02
Items are smaller than they appear. Not at all what I expected. Returned items and Amazon reduced refund by more than $10 for shipping.
- poor covers
     By A251MDPY2GLA0 on 2006-12-21
I bought this set 1 week ago, when I opened, most of the containers are too small. And the cover........, tight plastic. what a struggle..... to put them on an empty one. Imaging that I put food or liquid in. I did not understand the reviews that praise this product. I am not old and shaky.
I am tring to get it returned if it not too much trouble.
- Don't put liquid in them!
     By A1WMQWE01SIUEV on 2007-11-23
I decided it was time to clear out all my mismatched storage containers and bought a few sets of Pyrex...and immediately wished I hadn't! The first thing I used it for was cut veggies and I put some water in with them to keep them fresh. I went to put it in the fridge and the water started pouring out the side! I thought maybe I hadn't closed it right, but sure enough I had and it is just NOT sealed tight! And they are ALL like that!
Fine if you want something to just store overnight, but don't expect these to keep food fresh or airtight and certainly don't expect them to hold liquids in!!!
- Not very usable
     By A3UYMRMFJD46NP on 2008-01-07
I bought 2 of these sets to replace all of the plastic storage sets we had previously. I was looking forward to having the Pyrex versus plastic for all the same reasons listed by others such as cleaning, appearance, durability.
I would still recommend Pyrex over plastic but this particular set design is not very good. The straight sides without a top lip make them very difficult to use when heating in them.
When using the bowls in the microwave the bowls become VERY hot which requires the use of oven mitts to handle them. However, the slick straight sides make it likely that the bowl will slip from your mitted grip.
Likewise, if you are emptying the VERY hot bowls into another before eating, the straight sides and oven mitts make it virtually impossible to tip the bowls to pour without dropping them.
One other aspect of the shape that I have found is that they overflow in the microwave much more frequently than ones with sloped sides.
For storage only however, I think this set is just fine. The lids fit very tightly and the clear glass makes it very easy to identify the contents. But for me, if I am investing in Pyrex I want to be able to cook in it as well.
I have since purchased some of the Pyrex bowls that have sloped sides and a lip around the entire top. These also have lids for storage. I have found this design to be infinitely easier to handle hot and still just as useful for storage. As an added bonus, these new ones nest inside each other much better than the straight sided ones.

- Lids fit nice and tightly. However,.....
     By A1LVW3BOWGX2FB on 2005-12-16
Despite there being no cautionary in the instructions, the lids should not be placed in the microwave because they will warp. I was concerned about other reviewers' claims that the dishes could explode. Fortunately I don't have to worry about kids' safety since they are all grown.
I am now covering my Pyrex with microwave-safe wrap and have encountered no problems. If you are just heating clear liquid, Alton Brown suggests placing a wooden chopstick in the bowl so that the liquid does not become superheated.
All-in-all, a very inexpensive purchase and 'Made in the USA'!
- the are smaller then they look.
     By AFB0AMIYUTGFO on 2005-02-11
They are great for food storage, but for some reason the picture made them look like the full size glass pieces. They are a bit smaller then that.
- This is a great set to have
     By A353U0L2HAMSHV on 2008-06-02
I purchased this as a add on to my 4-for-3 shopping. (My price was $12.99 on 11/30/07) I must admit that I thought they would be larger, but that was my fault because I didn't read the sizes - just clicked and ordered! Now that I have had a chance to use them I am extremely happy that they aren't larger. The sizes are perfect for so many things. I use the 6 Cup Rectangular for baking small side dishes in the oven. The 4 Cup round dish is great for leftovers and the two smaller ones I've used for dips with company. I run them through my dishwasher lids and all and they are easily stacked in my cupboard. I great buy especially for Pyrex. I would recommend buying a set for yourself and one to keep on hand as a gift.
- Best shower gift I received
     By A1YP27BTTA5059 on 2005-12-04
I received this for my bridal shower in 1997 and have used them all over and over again. It is my most used gift. Since they are glass they wash up great and won't get that plastic taste that some plastic storage containers will give you. The covers have held up great and are also pretty easy to wash - no stains either. There is a great variety of sizes and I have ended up using them all - small for a small amount of leftovers, largest ones for bringing a big meal to a potluck, just to name a few uses.
- Buy one set and never another
     By A1IU7S4HCK1XK0 on 2006-09-23
This is a great solution for space-restricted kitchens. One set of these pyrex dishes and you can bake or cook and go to the fridge to store. So no need to have a pile of plastic storage ware. Also, plastic stains with tomato sauce and berries. These glass dishes are stain-proof. And you can microwave them; I don't like microwaving plastic because it can melt.
This makes a really welcome wedding or housewarming gift. It's plain, but something useful and everyone needs these. Much nicer than plastic storage dishes and more inert and long-lasting, too.
- Photo is misleading.
     By A1YBMP5P4RMLHW on 2007-09-28
I bought this at $14.99, thought it's a deal. But the size is so so small, the largest one is something like 7"x5". Photo is misleading. At least this is not a deal.
- Can't get the lids off without spilling
     By A14R86R610AS0O on 2005-01-18
Pyrex is better for cooking. These storage units are heavy and they don't stack and store well. Also the lids do not have a tab or lip which makes them hard to open without spilling. On the plus side nothing can stain them.
- Great Altenative to Tupperware and Plastic!!!!!
     By A24R9TIX80FJV7 on 2005-03-11
These glass storage containers are an awesome alternative to tupperware! Plastic is not good for your health!!! Phthalates in plastic storage containers can cause many problems. These Glass ones are perfect. Plus you can take them out of the fridge and throw them in the oven for easy heating. AWESOME!!!!
- good product, good company
     By AH2S1N5B5ELZ0 on 2005-08-29
one of the units came chipped, but looked like that it how it was made. anyhow, called manufacturer, got prompt replacement, no hassle at all.
- Bake or store or serve and best of all it won't stain like plastic!
     By A6VPK7X53QNAQ on 2007-01-11
I wonder why I stayed with plastic boxes so long. They would get stained if you microwaved food in them and you could certainly not pop them in the baking oven. The sight was unseemly too. With Pyrex, I cook and serve in these and then just close the lid to store the leftovers and can warm up the dish by throwing it in the regular oven or microwave the next day depending on the dish. They come out clean from the dishwasher, not all scratched and warped like plastic. Glass is one of the safest materials to store food in, superior to any kind of plastic. And of course, they will last longer too which helps save the environment. My plastic containers had to be thrown out after every 6-8 months.
- I had to struggle with the lids.
     By AUH3LK40TAOVH on 2007-02-11
I am really strong and I had to struggle with the lids. Once that hurdle was conquered - the product was okay. But no one should have to waste 20 minutes on a few [stupid] too tight lids on glass bowls. I didn't expect the bowls to be heavy glass by the way. The lids were a nightmare considering the fact that I am VERY HANDY.
- release lid bubble for liquids!
     By A1HNY24NJTFOX5 on 2007-11-27
Pro: durable, heatable, all the other good things every other review mentions...
Con: lid is a bit tricky if you want a good seal for liquids. The problem is usually that the lids easily trap too much air and you get a bubble. However, if you push the center down when closing the lid and release the air, the seal is perfectly liquid tight. Granted, I did learn that the hard way, but have since never forgotten to unpop the bubble.
- Cheap, but know their weaknesses...
     By A2EHYCA29NSQLU on 2008-03-02
I took a chance on these (based on the very attractive price) to replace dying, cracked, microwave-fried Rubbermaid pieces. Here's what I learned:
* The round ones ARE air tight. I've been looking for something that is air tight so that food doesn't leak all over when taking some food to work. The round ones are great in this regard.
* The rectangular ones leak. They look nice but they leak. But so do Rubbermaid and so do the Pyrex Deluxe pieces (with the vent and easy to remove lid).
* They really don't stack well and tend to jam. The glass is thinner than other Pyrex that I have so they seem apt to break easier. The Pyrex Deluxe pieces are vastly better in their stacking ability.
Summary: I like them a lot but unlike a lot of glowing reviews, understand they are not perfect. For the price, I bought 4 sets.
- Great cooking/baking set!!
     By AIJ3JAT8596TA on 2005-09-27
I was tired of all my metal pans rusting and having to throw them away, so I was interested in getting a glass cooking/baking set. I saw this one and it looked perfect, plus it comes with lids! This is a great set. The lids fit on tightly and it makes storing leftovers a breeze. It cleans beautifully. These are also a great alternative to using plastic containers, which don't last that long and don't clean up that well. Invest in this, you won't regret it!! This is a great cooking and baking set!!
- Sanitary and healthy.
     By A1UT16BZXDRNBZ on 2006-03-24
I never believed in plastic containers. Researches found that traces of harmful chemical can leach into the food in contact with them and you'll never know. I try to use glass containers whenever possible.
My only complaint is that I was unable to find replacement lid for this. I've had 2 lids broken after years of use.
