Oppenheim award-winningGreat States by International Playthings takes the wholegang on a cross-country trip. Children (and adults) can test their knowledge of state landmarks, state locations, state capitals and other facts. For instance, what is the capital of New Jersey? Or where is the Football Hall of Fame? Can you tell me what state touches two Great Lakes? Those are just a few of the hundreds of questions players are asked as they journey around the United States discovering state attractions, state landmarks, state abbreviations, state locations and much more. Not only are all the answers somewhere on the game board (map), there are game variations which can be played (so younger children and advanced players can both compete)2-6 playersAges: 7 and up MPN: INPP20026 - UPC: 020373200265

  • Great for all ages

    By A2OAMSOOOJX8QV on 2002-10-17
My son started playing this when he was 3. At 4, he can name all the states, abbreviations, capitals and most of the state birds. He can tell you where the major points of interest are without looking at the map. It helps to teach the concept of distance, such as "which state is closest to Maine". It also teaches the concept of compass direction, such as "which state is north of Texas". The game can be played with or without a board for portability. All in all a great educational game for children as well as adults.

  • Great for Adults!

You don't need the board to play this game, just take the flash cards with you to travel, etc. Make up your own rules, as you'll have fun 'refreshing' your memory of states, capitals and landmarks. I'd even recommend it for kids ;)

  • Love this game

I've enjoyed playing this as much as the kids. Very educational and fun. The kids don't even realize they're learning, but their interest in and knowledge of geography has improved immensely!

  • Parents- get ready to find out how little you know!!

My 7 year old daughter is a geography buff, and her skills definately improved after playing this game! It improved mine too! I found out how little I remember about differnt states! She learned North, South, East and West, can name all the states and the capitols! She is leaps and bounds ahead of her classmates in this area, I attribute that to the fun learning she experienced playing this game! I plan to purchase one for all my nieces and nephews when they are 7.

  • Learning FUN!

I highly recommend this game! Very fun while still being extremely educational. The best way to learn is while your having a good time doing it. My son (4 years) has this game and we have given the Jr. version as a gift. The Jr. version is appropriate for pre-readers.

  • Great, educational game.

My 8 year old grandson has learned so much from this game. He knows all the interesting facts, such as "Where is Alcatraz? What state is known as the bread basket of America? Where is the cowboy hall of fame? In what state and city is the largest building located? What state has the best surfing?" He knows all the state capitals and most of the largest cities. After playing it as described, we made our own game: without using the board and providing a little incentive, such as a nickel, I'd say a fact, and he'd answer it. He is soooooooo good. He's going to be the most knowledgeable child in his class on the United States capitals, largest cities, and facts. We now need to work on the state birds, etc. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

  • Great game - Could be sturdier

I watched Amazon for nearly 2 months for this item to be back in stock. We finally got our game and the quality is not all that great. Over all it's pretty good, but the timer broke before we even started our first game and the spinner is so cheaply made that it's a pain to use. *When we pass it from one player to the next, we have to take a moment to straighten it up and get the spinner arrow back in the center of the hole properly so it'll spin as it should. It's quite annoying.

My boys (ages 6 & 4) played this game with their Daddy and me and we had fun with it. Learned quite a bit too. Of course, it's a little advanced for our 4 year old, but we were able to include him just fine.

  • great game for the money

this is a great game....my 7 and 9 year old plays it and they have a blast...it would be great for your schools as well.

  • Good game, could be better quality though

We have enjoyed playing this game and it is very useful for learning a lot about the United States of America. It comes with a timer, but we have opted to play without it as it is only useful in remembering information and has no real use for the learning part. Once we learn more, then we will enjoy the added excitement on being timed for the answers. Our kids have benifited a lot from this and it's prevented them from getting discouraged.
The game also helps you learn the abbreviations of each state as well as the capitals and largest cities.
The playing card sets it comes with are the lowest quality I think I've ever seen. Seems like just big cardboard cutouts rather than real "cards". At the cost of the game, I was surprised to find such flimsy cards.
But that is the only negative we could say. It's a fun game to play and we would still recommend it.

  • Great States is a Great Game!

I bought this for my eight-year-old for his birthday, but my six-year-old loves it too. It is fun to play and it really teaches the kids their states and information about the states, like largest city, capital and resources. It's a nice review for adults too.

  • An educational and entertaining game
    By A1CL4GFJOJYT98 on 2007-12-05
My son got this for Christmas when he was 7 and a year later he still pulls it out and we play together. He has learned enough from this game and others that his teacher calls him, "her little geographer." What I like about this game is that if the kid doesn't know the answer they can find picture clues on the US map and feel successful getting the right answer. Eventually, my son memorized some facts and doesn't need to look at the map as much. We don't use the timer because it is too annoying. The spinner comes apart easily, but we put it back together quickly. Great States comes with lots of question cards so you can't run out and start repeating cards. Overall, my son enjoys learning geography and playing this game.

  • Poor Quality Great Family Fun
    By A1UNL1CTDMWXLX on 2007-11-08
I bought this game for our family. I thought we could have fun and learn at the same time. It is a lot of fun but the quality is terrible. The spinner is constantly falling apart. The timer is cheesey. It's too bad the company doesn't read some of these reviews and fix the problems.

  • nice game

I bought this game for my 8 year old, two years ago. It is still one of her favorite games. It's fun for us to play and I learn things too. I'd recommend this to any kid that likes board games and may enjoy learning. Not all her friends share her passion for the game.

  • What a blast!!
    By A2JZ8T64YZDQSI on 2008-01-09
We LOVE this game! I have to agree with another reviewer; get ready to learn how little you know about the USA! Our seven year old happens to love geography and is really learning lots of great facts about our states. I truly feel this will help him in school. In agreement, as well, about the cheesy spinner and timer; the spinner constantly gets "stuck"..you have to sort of pull it up through the cardboard in order to get it to work (9/10 times when spinning, which is a bit annoying). And I have my doubts about how accurate the timer is as well. All in all, I would recommend this game its educational qualities and it being tons of fun at the same time!

  • great game

Our family played this game and had a lot of fun as well as learned a lot about the different states and their locations. It also taught the children about traveling from different points on the map.

  • Great learning game

I bought this for my 6 year old son. The timer came broke in the box but the game is still fun and it is easy to find other ways to time if you use that as part of the game (older kids). For me this is a great learning game for the younger ones and a refresh of knowledge for adults and older kids. We really enjoy it.

  • Very entertaining and I learned some things too!

I wanted a fun and engaging way to teach my children the geography of the US. When my mother was taking a trip I ordered this so that the kids would have a way of 'seeing' how far away she would be. I enjoyed it, we played it several times the first night. The kids, two months later, still ask to play it. It is not so simple that you will not enjoy yourself, and it also opens up nice family discussions. My kids were asking if I had been here or there, and what it was like. I was able to show them where I was born, all the states I have lived in, etc. They have a better idea of where stories I tell them took place now, and tell me about the state birds, and how they wished we lived in such and such state because that is their favorite bird. Now that they know I am writing a review about it, we have to go play it. I wish a game like this had been around when I was young, I found geography to be boring!

  • Great game

I purchased this game for my 9 year old and he loves it! It even helps me learn more about the states and geography that I didn't know! Fun to play as a family!

  • A little advanced
    By AH4LF65RGS733 on 2008-09-20
I boought this to help my 8 year old learn more about the states, because he's always asking so many questions about them. It's a bit advanced - I can't imagine many 8 year olds being able to actually play the game without constant adult help - but rather than play it at a game, we use the board and the question cards as a seek and find/learning type game of our own and it works well that way and both my son and I have learned a lot.
