  • Good, reliable battery - Highly recommended!!!

    By AVNS01M0DHQU3 on 2004-03-08
I got the NB-1L battery when I bought my Canon Powershot S200, and I've since bought two extra batteries, one Canon (the battery reviewed), and one DigiPower equivalent.

The original Canon batteries perform noticably better than the DigiPower battery, and they also stay fairly cool, as opposed to the DigiPower battery that gets dangerously hot during operation.

I've had no problems running my Canon batteries, but the capacity is not all that impressive - hence the 3 batteries. An absolute minimum here would be two batteries for your camera.

On my S200 with the LCS screen on, I can get somewhere between 75 and 150 pictures out of one fully charged battery. With the LCD screen off (only a 2 second preview after each picture), I can get around 200 (sometimes a few more) pictures out of one fully charged battery.

I've been using my newest battery for about 10 months, and so far I haven't noticed any decrease in capacity. It appears to hold its charge very well for weeks at a time.

I would probably have given it a 2 star rating if I took the general battery capacity into consideration, but since you don't have any real options to this general battery type, I'll give it an overall 5 star rating. It performs better than other brands for my camera, and I've been very happy with it in all aspects.

I would also recommend that you to buy this battery and not a Canon equivalent from another manufacturer. This battery's worth the extra money!!!

  • Great Battery -- But DON'T buy generic!!

    By A1U54AFDTCBV41 on 2004-04-11
We have had our Canon S400 for about 4 months & it has been wonderful -- as well as the Canon battery. The charge lasts for a pretty long time. We bought a generic battery (from an individual seller off this site) for a backup. It died in a little over a month. Don't bother trying to save money - just get the real thing (which this is).

  • Don't Leave Home without It

    By AF1Q9X0FQXGZ3 on 2004-08-16
If you have a Canon Powershot for more than a couple of weeks (and use it) you will inevitably come to the conclusion that you need a second battery. I have the S410 and the battery indicator only comes on when you have around 4 flash photos worth of power remaining. Then you're out of luck until the battery is recharged. If you have a spare you can go on shooting until the other is recharged. It's a win-win situation and worth the price. My brother-in-law has an earlier powershot and has experimented with non-canon batteries and his conclusion is that it is worth the premium to buy canon's battery. My recommendation: get an extra battery and go with Canon. Plus if something goes wrong you can call up Canon and not worry about voided warranties and what not. You will not regret this purchase.

  • You get what you paid for.

    By A12UGJ1PKE0SHD on 2004-11-22
Bought a generic battery (less than $15, with S/H) at the same time with the S400 about a year ago. Use both batteries (50-50%, all the time). Now the Canon one is still working like new, the generic one can't hold any charge.

Guess the old saying is right :)

  • DO NOT BUY GENERIC, NO MATTER THE PRICE

    By A1EZUNBE3900SM on 2005-03-21
I've read the other reviews on this item and these people know what they are talking about. DO NOT BUY GENERIC. ONLY BUY CANON BRAND BATTERIES FOR YOUR CANON CAMERA. I've tried the cheapie $5 generic battery, it didn't even last a week. I have also paid about $35 for a digipower which is sold at some stores in place of Canon at about the same price as Canon so you would think you are getting a good product for your money. WRONG! I have had my Canon battery for almost 4 years, and my friend has had one for 2 years, they both work as well as when we first purchased them. The hold a charge for a long time. Just beware when you're looking to save a buck, you'll regret it, I sure did. Having a back-up battery is a fantastic idea, but only if it actually works!

  • Exceptionally Long Life!!
    By A11VG3IJIMJXGV on 2005-01-15
Like many others, I am constantly worried about having enough battery power while on vacation, and thus, I am always tempted to purchase an extra battery. When it comes to batteries, this one is exception. Extremely light weight and incredibly durable. I took over 200 photos in one day, utilizing my S500's built-in flash indiscriminately. At the end of the day, I still had power left over to spare. But before you decide to purchase an extra battery, you should experiment with the NB-1LH battery that comes with the camera. Purchasing an extra battery may be overkill for your needs. However, if you want an extra battery as a backup, this one is the only way to go. You won't regret it, whereas with an off-brand, you're rolling the dice.

  • good choice
    By A23O6B15QIPJTP on 2005-01-18
make sure it has canon on it or it will not take a charge as good or last as long.

  • Bad Idea
    By A3EDVUU7LRFZEJ on 2006-01-24
These batteries are the sole reason I will never buy another Canon camera. I love my camera, but these batteries are over-priced and have a short lifespan. I've been through four of these in the last couple of years, and part of the reason why is because they're Lithium Ion. For the longest life, Lithium Ion batteries need to be topped off as often as possible, and should never be allowed to discharge completely (every deep discharge cycle lowers the life of the battery considerably, and after 100 cycles, the average Li-Ion is at 75-85% of original capacity). So, generally speaking, Lithium Ion is a lousy choice for a camera. Who takes ten shots and then tops off the battery? NiCad is a FAR better choice for a camera, since NiCads SHOULD be completely discharged on a regular basis. I spent a few hundred dollars on the camera, and I'm well on my way to spending an equivalent amount on batteries. That's absurd. I bought another brand of camera recently that uses standard AA batteries, and I'm much happier with it. I use NiCads instead of the Li-Ions it came with, and they're working great. Proprietary batteries s*ck.

  • Excellent Price!!!
    By A3NJ9O43RNDNL3 on 2004-03-26
Excellent price!!! I have used this battery as my "Main" battery and saved the original as a spare. THIS battery has had ZERO defects, as I have used my new camera quite a bit since recieving it and have charged it twice since recieving it. (It takes FULL charge and lasts the expected amount before recharge.)Not bad for the price!!!

  • OEM: There is no alternative.
    By A1LAS6N7TXDOYK on 2005-05-30
This is the one area in which I insist on buying an OEM battery. I always buy generic-- film, breakfast cereal, even printer cartridges. But with batteries, I found the hard way that you can't do that. I bought two off eBay, thinking it was cost-effective(you can get approximately 12 generic batteries for the price of a Canon one), but they lost their charge entirely after a month or two.

I have two of these batteries. They still hold a pretty good charge after 10 months of use. Recently, for example, I was at an event where I took nearly 100 flash photos and perhaps five minutes of video(I have an S500... video drains the battery), and the battery still had power left enough to take more photos the next day-- and upload data to my computer.

    It's a pity they're so expensive.

  • Canon Battery Review
    By AD3PSRCBTJJLM on 2006-03-15
The original battery that came with the camera (Canon S500) gave out after over 1 year of use. I ordered 2 of the OEM batteries through Amazon. They appeared to be the same as the original but they would not hold a charge over 24 hours. I returned them and Amazon sent me 2 replacements. I am having similar problems with these also. I must carry my charger with me at all times.

  • Excellent long-lasting battery
    By A3W04PZR0ACWWP on 2007-03-08
We had purchased an after-market replacement battery when our original (which was about 5 years old) died. The after-market battery only held the charge for about 1/2 a day. Found this battery on Amazon and used it on vacation in the beginning of Feb. When traveling again at the beginning of March, realized that we never took the charger out of the suitcase - this battery hasn't needed a recharge yet! We haven't used it all day long so far, but we do use it at least a couple times a week. As good as the original!

  • OEM Canon battery the best
    By A21RE0MTGN0HYI on 2007-01-11
Make sure you get an OEM Canon battery...this was the real deal and you pay for quality...don't mess will any other cheapo batteries....thanks

  • Canon Battery Pack
    By A1DCCKT8EUOPGI on 2006-02-23
I am pleased with the battery and the way it holds a charge.

  • Always get the Canon battery!
    By A3ML61W7FVXO4K on 2006-02-28
I bought this battery as a backup battery for my Canon S400. I used to have a non-canon battery to serve that purpose - BAD IDEA. The non-canon battery had problems charging & retaining the charge. No problems at all with the Canon NB-1LH.

  • Works fine - 2 years and still going
    By AQQYCUCAR6WDD on 2006-10-26
My NB-1LH came with my S410 that I bought 2 years or so ago. It's lasted this long and still works a bit, which is why it got 4 stars. I'd give it three and a half for the capacity of the battery. It's never lasted a long time, but perhaps it's my own fault as I leave the LCD on almost all the time. When I first purchased the camera, I could get probably 100 pictures with flash and leaving the LCD on nearly continuously. Now after over 2 years of every other day use (at least, with 2 kids that love the camera!) I can only get perhaps 30 to 50 pictures before it starts giving the red low battery sign. Once that comes up, I'm lucky to get 2 more shots before the camera shuts itself off and gives the "Change the battery pack" sign.

So, I'll purchase a new one in hopes that I can get another 2 years out of it! The camera itself has been great but that's another review.

To the previous reviewer who questioned where the batteries were made, my original one that shipped with the camera 2 years ago was made in china according to the label.

  • Good Replacement
    By A1DE45AI7RC0AB on 2006-11-09
Worked like a new battery should. Holds a charge for over 80 pics. Probably worth the extra money for a real Canon product.

  • Worked when knock off's didn't!
    By A1FXOTGZF7CH7I on 2007-01-09
I had bought several knock off batteries that would fit my cannon and had veryb poor service from them. This battery works very well thank you!

  • Way too expensive!
    By A1LSZ343NQL05S on 2007-03-23
Can't complain about how it works but the price is outrageous. I've had problems with "compatible" batteries.

  • Very disappointed
    By A1RGY42I1FOEYH on 2007-11-21
I would have expected this service from a five dollar battery! This battery will not hold a charge.

  • So Far So Good
    By A1KMVRKLNWTFMV on 2008-03-25
Seems to be working just like the original batteries did at first, I'm hoping it will last at least a year, so far so good.

  • Expensive, but works fine
    By A2O3T0VFJS0RL3 on 2005-08-10
Proprietary battery packs always command a premium; however, based on the great deal I got on the camera itself, it was worth it. What else can I say, it works as advertised.

  • BUY BACK-UP BATTERY !!!!
    By AKQDPKP77E4R9 on 2005-08-16
These lithium-ion batteries go withoutmuch warning. Having a back-up makes good sense. It's is the best accessory to have.

  • Very good battery, long life!
    By A35S0NDNBR6WR5 on 2005-08-17
This battery performs as well or better than the one that came with our camera. It has worked very well.

  • Great product !
    By A3FECNSSENJB28 on 2005-09-05
The replacement battery works far beyond my expectation considering that I didn't expect much buying a replacment battery for my canon without being directly from the company. Highly recommende!

  • Great replacement battery
    By A1C6ZJNWKYK485 on 2006-01-15
After four or five years my original batteries stopped holding a charge, and this is a great replacement. I like to have two on hand so I can charge one while I'm using the other.

  • Fantastic replacement battery
    By A1ZU34K6LFNVLD on 2006-03-05
I received the product in very short order and have been most pleased with its performance. My camera can snaps many flash photos without running dry. My old battery had seen too much action and could no longer cut it.

  • Exactly as ordered
    By AF1G7BKC18JQ5 on 2006-03-08
This battery arrived as promised and is exactly what I ordered. The battery life is great.

  • New Battery

I needed a new battery for my camera and was thrilled to find it so easily. Thanks!
