Top Notch Film By A2V3P1XE33NYC3 on 2000-05-25
O.K., let me explain myself. I'm a 29 year old male. I am a big fan of extreme horror films, and find most films along the lines of Disney fare as worthless pap or worse. Having established that, I was flipping through the channels one Sunday and stumbled over this little gem on the Disney channel. I left it on figuring I could smirk and do a "MST3K" treatment on the movie. Incredibly, I found myself drawn to the characters and the movie. Even to this day I still check the monthly TV bulletin we get to see if it's on. In fact, it's on as I write this review. I actually taped the film, something I almost never do. What can I say? I'm not made of stone, folks. The best thing in this film by far is Danielle Harris. What a major babe! Man! Not only is she a great actress, she is so attractive and vivacious that the viewer is drawn into the film and really cares what happens to her character. Most would probably argue that Katherine Heigl is a knock-out, and she is pretty, but Harris manages to steal the movie. But it's really not about looks. Both of these fine actresses manage to turn in a stellar performance. Just thinking about some of their scenes brings a smile to my face. The movie is a sort of "Feaky Friday" type of film, but this one is much more fun, as well as updated into the '90's. Another thing that is great about it is that it's a clean film. Any parents that are reading this: try and find this for your kids. They will probably thank you for it. Just so I don't make this a long rant on the wonderous abilities of Danielle Harris, (Did I mention she steals the movie?) did anyone notice how great the band was that played at the dance? How many films have you seen where the band at the dance totally sucks? Not in this film! That alone earns the movie five stars. Wish Upon a Star is a rare film. I suspect alot of people would get a kick out of this movie. This movie is smart, funny, and upbeat. Amazon, find some copies! And Ms. Harris, if you are ever filming in Omaha, look me up!
Surprised and thrilled By A2K3FB3JE4SPAK on 2001-07-11
I'm not a big fan of the Disney Channel. In fact, I feel that Disney in general has been slowly degrading in the last few years. I happened across *Wish Upon A Star* on TV by chance and I thought it looked as cheesy as anything...but it turned out to be a beautiful movie. The story was universal. Who *hasn't* wished they were someone else? Especially their sibling, who seems to have everything they lack? And of course the magic of Disney can make it happen...sounds kind of dumb; but it was great. The acting was really good, especially Harris and Heigl; it was totally believable. The other more minor characters were typically Disney cute, yet that not only offset the sisters' profound characterizations, but lent the movie a lovable touch. I don't mean that the sisters were shockingly original or even that their characters are very deep and realistic. "Brainy plain Jane" and "boy-crazy fashion plate"? Where have we heard that before? However, the actors themselves were wonderful, and they really made the sister relationship come alive. They were sisters, and it was real and it was beautiful. As ever, the modern Disney personality - cute wacky craziness, healthy, hearty, but often insecure people - asserts itself. But because you like the characters, it's totally okay. In fact it actually is funny and interesting and riveting because there's substance behind it. Hailey and Alexis' wacky exploits by which they try to outdo each other, ruin each others' image, are hilarious. It's true that this movie was stereotypical to the extreme --- a good-looking basketball star going out with the homecoming queen shoo-in, a shy, dorky best friend, three snobby followers of the most popular girl in school, even the severe, uptight school principal who's secretly a real person (as outgoing as any Disney character). Yet this movie really worked. *Wish Upon A Star* made me laugh and snicker, and conversely, smile and get teary. Strangely, it was stereotypical, yet lacked all pretense.
A Classic... By A199IMPF19V50G on 2006-10-16
I love this movie.
I ordered it from Netflix, thinking it would be one of those silly 90's movies with stupid endings.
But it was not.
It is now on my top ten favorite movies list.
Both Danielle Harris and Katherine Heigl are wonderful in this movie.
It's about 2 sisters (Hayley and Alexia Wheaton) who basically have nothing in common.
Hayley (the sporty, short, 'grungy' one) wishes on a shooting star that she was her sister.
And it happens! They switch bodies, just like in Freaky Friday! Except this movie is SO much better than
Freaky Friday. It kind of reminds me of 'Model Behavior' and how Hayley has a crush on Kyle reminds of
'All-American Girl' by Meg Cabot. Go Princess Diaries!
The part where Hayley (who is actually Alexia) gets up on the table and starts dancing is hilarious.
It's so funny how the whole cafeteria is moving along with her!
I think there should have been more parts with Caitlin in it but still, this is a great movie!
Definitely buy it or rent it.
I'm buying it next week and eating nachos while i watch it for the 2nd time in 2 weeks.
PS. The parents were super funny.
And i loved the Mitter Monster.
Katherine Heigl's Greatest Film!! By A3IBYRSA490ZOA on 2003-06-13
Few films have touched my life as much as this. Here we have a powerful saga about Katherine Heigl being 18.Truly her outfits in this show off more of her body than in any other film. Oh and there is a plot. (like it matters) Here Heigl and her younger sister (played by an older Daneil Harris) switch bodies, wreching havok on their social lives. Face it, this movie could be about Heigl watching grassy grow. She's so beautiful and in almost every scene you can't help but love it. The opening scene of her getting dressed has brought men out of comas.

- Is anyone listening to all who want this movie on video?
     By AB9GYOLYWH2F0 on 2000-11-25
Seems like most everyone who has written something here about this movie, just happened upon it just like the shooting star which was wished upon. While working out of town, I flipped on the TV in my motel room, and was captured by "Wish Upon A Star" on Disney. I had no idea what it was, I missed the first few minutes of the show, but it was GREAT! I don't have cable, so I can't watch Disney in hopes of catching it again, and I would REALLY LOVE to have this movie on VHS or DVD. I don't think that siblings often enough realize just what it is like to be in the other's place, having to deal with things from another view. This movie was absolutly great, and I can't say that enough..and yes, having no idea who Danielle Harris was, she was excellent in this movie. SO, if someone is out there listening to us..DISNEY, PLEASE bring this movie into home video production! Or produce more of them or something! It has in some way touched lives, and it will continue to do so, but only if we could all have it to own, to show our own children, or to keep the riminder with us, that everything is NOT as it sometimes seems to be. 5 stars to "Wish Upon A Star"
- Great Movie

This movie is hilarious! When Hayley Wheaton wishes to be her older sister, Alexia, her dream comes true! But when Hayley starts to ruin Alexia's life, by coming home with a hickie, making up with Alexia's ex-boyfriend, and making faces for the Prom Queen pictures, Alexia decides to get even! Watch what happens in this great movie!
- Comical, Touching and Very Entertaining

"Wish Upon A Star" is a movie my husband and I saw on TV and liked it so much, we wanted to own it. It's a pleasure to watch a movie without profanity. "Wish Upon A Star" made us laugh while letting us look into what it truly means to "walk a mile in someone else's shoes"! When we want to watch something entertaining, funny and touching at the same time, we watch "Wish Upon A Star" yet another time.
- Surprisingly Entertaining!
     By A3FRDC1HCTEOH on 2007-02-23
I first knew about this movie from a friend's recommendation. I love Grey's Anatomy and Izzie is my favorite in it so I wanted to watch Katherine Heigl's previous work. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by it. While the story is undoubtedly cliched, the girls' performances were great.
I liked Danielle Harris in this movie. She's funny and cute. She did both Hayley and Alexia-as-Hayley very well, especially the latter. That table dance at the cafeteria was hilarious! I do think that Katherine stole the movie, however. She had the harder job of playing a shy, insecure little girl trapped in a tall, gorgeous body but she did a beautiful job of it. Her every shy smile and excited squeal leaves us in no doubt that it is actually Hayley in Alexia's body. I especially loved the part when they were taking the Princesses' pictures for the paper and she was making these outrageous faces. I forgot how funny Katherine can be. It really makes me think her comedic talents are being underused in her show, but that's another story.
A small piece of trivia: Danielle Harris played the younger sister but she is actually a year-and-a-half older that Katherine Heigl. It made sense to reverse the girls' roles. Katherine is not only at least a foot taller than Danielle, she is also has the quintessential 'popular girl' look. Besides, since they were supposed to have switched bodies, each of them were playing their own age for most of the movie anyway. I think the girls were perfectly cast.
The supporting cast were also great. I especially enjoyed the performance of the actress who played their mother. She played her part as a mother torn between her motherly instincts and 'the experiment' convincingly. The rest of the cast really didn't have enough scenes to develop their characters but that's okay since the movie was about the sisters anyway. They did a good enough job given what little material they had.
Too bad they don't make wholesome movies like this anymore. We need more good, clean, funny movies like this.
- Pretty good movie

The first time I had ever seen this movie, I was just flippin' through the channels an' I stopped at the Disney channel and figured, "Well, this looks interesting," and it turned out to be so cool! My sisters love the movie, and they are only 9 and 4 years old! I think that even if you are only 2 years old you will get this movie, it is so inspiring! My sisters and I used to fight al the time untill we saw this movie, and now we're best friends! This is undoubtedly my favorite movie of all! I recommend this movie for all ages. It's a great Flick!
- *****Relates To Every Teenagers Life*****
     By AU0AHN4P389JF on 1998-12-30
Wish Upon A Star, featuring Katherine Heigel,is a movie that could relate to my situation as being a younger sister of a beautiful and popular senior girl. Not only have I lived in my sister's shadow for years, but it seemed to me that no one understood how i truly felt. This movie, unlike many others, proved to me that i was no longer the only who was in a similar situation to mine. The younger sister Haley Wheaton is constently eager to know more about her older sister's "fun-filled life". She becomes more and more jealous of her sister's body, boyfriend, and popular friends that she ends up wishing on a star to be her sister. Very much on the contrary Alexia is wishing the same. She asumes that her life will not lead her to a successful future, like her sister's will be. Because both of them make the wish at the same time, popular Alexia, and brainiac Haley, switch places......bringing confusion, amazment, and anguish among their household. Wish Upon A Star not only related to me...but i am sure relates to a majority of the teenage girls out there!!!!
- It was such a great movie
     By A91KQOEWA8JF0 on 2002-07-21
When I 1st saw "Wish Upon a Star" I fell in love with the movie! I don't own it but everytime it's on the Disney channel I must stop and watch it! And that's what i'm doing right now! It's so great and the girls remind me of me and my sister me being the plain jane brainy one and her being the princess! I'd love to switch places with her for a day but i'm doubting that will ever happen! But I do have one question.... I really would like to know who the band is that sings at the dance? They were amazing! So if anyone could help or e-mail me that would be great!

I used to watch this film on The Disney Channel all the time!I always loved it but Disney didn't actually show you the whole movie! They edited more details out of the film which was very stupid. When I bought the video I noticed a few extra things and that's why you should buy it cause The Disney Channel didn't give us everything.I love this movie! It's about Alexia and Haley Wheaton.Alexia is pretty, popular,& is dating one of the most popular guys in school.Haley has good grades & a nice personality so one night they wish to be each other expecting nothing but the next morning they get it!Now buy it & you'll know what happens!

Remember watching this movie on the Disney channel and loving it? That's why I had to buy it. It reminds me of being a kid and loving this movie. It's so funny and cute.
- Good Movie, Katherine Heigl is beautiful, but ugh!
     By AV3RQQUICFHMY on 2000-01-12
Well the movie has been out since 1997, and has been on video that long. But I guess people didn't catch on to it and they took it off the shelves. All the online stores either don't have it in stock, or its at some outrageous price like 80 dollars. But I think you can get it for DVD for about 20 dollars.. at reel.com
- I loved it!
     By on 2000-01-21
This movie doesn't take alot of thinking plot wise but it does make you wonder what it would be like switching places with someone. I would suggest if you have ever wondered about switching places with some, then you would love this movie. If not you will still enjoy it.
- A Great Family Film

This movie was real good. I saw it on TV one day and actually gave up Ally McBeal to watch it. It was on again so I taped it so now I can watch it whenever I want! It was really funny. Hayley really reminds me a lot of myself and Alexia reminds me of my older sister. It was really funny too. Also Moonpools & Caterpillars performs! They rock!
- a great family movie

i am 13. it is very hard to find a movie to watch with my parents. one night my dad came home with this movie. I thought it was going to be really dumb. but is was really good. it was about two sisters that trade place by wishing upon a star. great for all familys to watch together.
- every girls dream...
     By on 1999-01-06
This movie is about two sisters who trade bodies for a while accidently, and learn that being the other isn't quite as fun as it looks! The plot is easy to follow, fun, and cute. I reccomend this movie to any girl who has ever wished to be prettier, smarter, or more popular!
- The movie is so-so but the songs in it we're great!
     By on 1999-01-14
I saw the movie twice and honestly I really didn't care that much for the story in it. But I do recommend for people to pick up this movie not for the whole plot/story but for the music. Most of the songs that were featured in this movie was from the former band Moonpools and Caterpillars. The songs taken from the their "Lucky Dumpling" debut cd were "Hear", "Colossal Youth" and "Heaven". Though I really didn't hear the song "Colossal Youth" being played, but it's one of my favorites from the band. I just read the credits. The reason why I give this movie the 5 stars is because near the ending ... they actually showed the band, Moonpools and Caterpillars. And that is really way cool! So if you enjoy great music ... pick this movie up ... and don't forget to pick up the Lucky Dumpling Cd by Moonpools and Caterpillars.
- Best slumber-party-movie since "Girl's Just Wanna Have Fun"!
     By A28HB7DGETFTEX on 2001-07-06
This is the movie you'll love to watch over and over again with your sisters and/or best friends! It gets right to the heart of the prestigious sister-friend relationship. Kaherine Heigl stars as the popular and glamorous Alexia Wheaton, whose little sister, played by the ever-adorable Danielle Harris, wishes she could BE her big sister! This movie will take you on a rollercoaster of ups and downs as you watch these sisters in action! I'm definately excited this movie is being re-released! I was seriously contemplating buying it for $100 from an auction site this Christmas to give to my sisters! If you've got sisters, this movie is a must see!!! You might also want to check out Amazon's Music Store for a CD by Moonpools and Caterpillars called "Lucky Dumpling" it has a lot of the songs featured in this movie! Two, very BIG, thumbs up!!!:)
- Very cute
     By A1FBGINWUEBI4R on 2001-07-26
Like the previous reviewer, I'm typically not a big fan of the Disney channel. This was one of those movies I caught a glimpse of one night while flipping around the dial. I stopped for a few minutes and before I knew it... it was two hours later. Ok, its not the most original story ("Freaky Friday", "Like Father, Like Son") but it is really cute. Harris and Heigl are really good and genuinely likeable. Yeah, you know where the story is going from the title screen... but you don't care. Its just fun, the perfect movie when you just want to smile =)
