Forrest Gumpx$12.91

(32 reviews)

Best Price: $24.98 $12.91

Forrest Gump (1994) is one of the most successful films ever made, winning Tom Hanks his second successive Best Actor Oscar (he won the previous year for Philadelphia) as well as claiming the Best Picture Oscar and many other awards and nominations, including several for music. A unique fable of American life from the 1950s to the 80s, the film blends comedy, drama, war, romance and groundbreaking special effects into a social and political portrait of the passing years, all seen through the eyes of the intellectually challenged but immensely likeable Forrest Gump. The soundtrack is a double album featuring 31 classic pop tunes plus a suite from Alan Silvestri's rich orchestral music, represented more completely on the companion score album. Opening with Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog", this is a fine anthology of three decades of American music, taking in everything from Joan Baez's "Blowin' In The Wind" to Aretha Franklin's "Respect", The Mammas and The Papas' "California Dreamin'" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson". Here also is Scott McKenzie with "San Francisco", plus Jefferson Airplane, the Supremes, Lynyrd Skynrd and many more. Like American Graffiti (1973), this is one of the great pop soundtracks, happily at home in just about any music collection. --Gary S. Dalkin MPN: 85932 - UPC: 696998593220

  • This CD is like a box of chocolates.

    By A1J5KCZC8CMW9I on 2003-07-16
This is a good selection of rock and roll, but I don't think it's essential, unless "Forrest Gump" is your favorite movie of all time. There's no point in complaining about what's not here since that would take weeks. But what was selected, was done so because I think it said something about the times, the way people were feeling, and about what was going on. I don't think anything was included just because it rocked. "Elvis" of course because he's the king. "CCR" probably because of wartimes. "The Doors" and "Beach Boys" might represent that California vibe. "Dylan" and "Baez" for the folk and beatnik scenes. I'm sure many of these artists mean different things to different people. The song I connect to the most is Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'". For some reason it made me quit the military and move to New England. Of course all these songs can just be enjoyed without getting too deep about them. If you're looking for an eclectic mix of music from the 50's to the 80's, you should get your hands on "Forrest Gump".

  • fine soundtrack loaded with classic pop vocals and oldies

    By A2R6RA8FRBS608 on 2008-04-14
The soundtrack to the movie Forrest Gump gives us an excellent assortment of American hits that cannot be ignored; they're all THAT good. The quality of the sound is excellent; and the artwork is very tastefully done.

The track set starts off with none other than Elvis Presley singing and belting out his famous number, "Hound Dog." The guitar work and drums work well; but Elvis' voice carries this number and the backup vocalists are great! "(I Don't Know Why) But I Do" by Clarence 'Frogman' Henry registers huge on this scale; this gets the royal treatment and it fits perfectly with so much of the other music on this album. Similarly "Walk Right In" by The Rooftop Singers has an infectiously happy melody to it; and this is an excellent example of 1960s folk music. Moreover, "Blowin' In The Wind" by Joan Baez sparkles as if it were still fresh and new today--it's that much of a classic. Excellent!

"I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" features The Four Tops singing their hearts out; and it all works very well. "Respect by Aretha Franklin is easily one of my favorites on this two CD set; it's awesome and it's easily a major highlight of this two CD set.

"California Dreamin'," of course, features The Mamas and The Papas; this song inspired so many young people in the 1960s to journey to California in search of inner peace and a better quality of life. "Mrs. Robinson" is equally bright when Simon & Garfunkel sing it; they harmonize perfectly and their guitar work is mighty fine!

"San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)" by Scott Mackenzie really sounds great as it ever did; Scott's melody is really very pretty and I enjoy this number very much. "Aquarius" and "Let The Sun Shine In" by The Fifth Dimension are hauntingly beautiful and instantly memorable, too.

"Joy To The World" is a number by Three Dog Night that really strikes me as very passionate; and listen for "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head." B. J. Thomas sings this passionately with great sensitivity; and it's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard! What a great soundtrack this is! "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd really rocks well with a fine country twist; Lynyrd Skynyrd could really rock out a tune!

"I've Got To Use My Imagination" is a fiery ballad by Gladys Knight & the Pips that really tugs at my heartstrings whenever I hear it; and there's also "On The Road Again" by Willie Nelson.

Overall, the soundtrack to Forrest Gump gives us so much Americana music it's hard to ignore this two CD set. I recommend this CD set for fans of the movie Forrest Gump and people who enjoy some oldies mixed in with classic pop vocals.

  • GREAT ALBUM PERIOD!!!!

    By A1KDGSZEJXSE9S on 2005-01-02
This album is HUGE and great. Lots of great music by different
singers/bands. The album follows the time period thoughout
this movie starting in the 50's and 60's. You have "Sweet
Home Alabama" which is considered by many to be one if not
the greatest southern rock songs ever. I'm not a huge fan
of the band, but there is no denying the greatness of some of their work.

You have some great MoTown cuts like "I Can't Help Myself"
by The Four Tops is one of my favorite Motown classics. We
also have Frankins "Respect" that is a classic that you
just have to love. This is arguably the best soundtrack
ever put together. If you love 50-70's music there has to
be some stuff here for you. Jackson Browne classic
"Running On Empty" is another track not to miss aswell as
CCR's classic"Fortunate Son" another outstanding track. If
you were to put together a classic album spanding 4 decades
this 2 disk set would be close to being perfect.

This is a must have for lovers of classic music that has
stood the test of time. The Doors, CCR, The Four Tops, The
Byrds,Jackson Browne, Doobie Brothers, Aretha Franklin,
Pickett, Bob Dylan, Youngbloods, Elvis Presley just to
name some... Just a superb collection of music.

  • "Music that reminds us and lives with us"

    By AHYPS5FZPVSEW on 2002-07-02
This is one of the best soundtracks I've ever listened to, and what makes it so unique is the variety of music from different decades: the late 50's, the 60's, the 70's, and the early 80's. The music that gets to my heart, mind, and soul is that of the 60's; it'll always be my favorite. I enjoy watching movies very much, and it is the music that makes "Forrest Gump" an enjoyable one indeed (yes, I know - Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump made it enjoyable as well). But even if you haven't seen the movie, you are sure to like this soundtrack - there is something here for just about everyone. And it has a bit of just about everything, too: folk, Motown, soul, and of course, rock-n-roll. The only thing preventing me from giving it five stars is that there are no Beatles or Stones songs included -what's the 60's without them? And it has no disco songs from the late 70's (oh, I know - that's SO disappointing!). Otherwise, this is a must-have; you'll be listening to it over and over again. Enjoy!

  • Great soundtrack but incomplete.

    By on 2004-02-07
Although the movie soundtrack is truly great, featuing a cross-section of the greates music of the 60's and 70's, the CD is incomplete. It lacks several tracks which were in the movie, including the Jimi Hendrix version of "All Along the Watchtower," and "Red, White and Blue." However, the presence of the other featured greats more than make up for it.

  • now thats a soundtrack!
    By AG1UTW3A1HKYJ on 2005-02-03
Ive accepted the facts and have come to admit that I liked Forrest Gump (the movie) and the soundtrack. The soundtrack offers the best of almost every period of modern rock. The last number, the Forrest Gump Suite, is perhaps one of the most elegant and uplifting classical pieces ever written.

  • Times of the Past
    By A3JZ5X8PY8NT5Z on 2005-09-03
I enjoyed the motion picture soundtrack to "Forest Gump."
The variety of music speaks of hope, despair, love, and time passing by. While events can often seem senseless, they can often end up being meaningful especially if we make them that way.

The music did a great job capturing the spirit of the movie and I can't think of a better selection for the script. I believe movies should give us something to think about and this soundtrack does so as well. Thank you for offering such a great and thought provoking producting.

  • La boîte de chocolats
    By A2R2PLK745CT07 on 2005-09-28

  • Soundtrack brings you back to the old days
    By A29EPKPRI6H0CN on 2005-11-28
As a 21-year old I have always loved oldies and classic rock, which is why I've owned this album for more than 5 years now. I listen to all of it as much as I did the first day I got it. This soundtrack has something for everyone- if you like the Supremes, you're set. If you're more of a CCR fan, you're good to go there as well. If The Beach Boys is more your speed, then you're made. The double-CD set has all the songs from the movie and puts you right at the scene it played in and brings you back to your younger days. The mix of folk, rock and pop music dating from the 1950 to the late 70s and early 80s has just the right combination of oldies but goodies, whether you've seen the movie or not.

  • Perhaps the best Soundtrack of 60's and 70's Music
    By A5KSXVM8HKVB5 on 2001-10-19
The music on this double CD definds a period of history (much like the film sought to do). If you're new to 60's and 70's music, but are interested in the music then this is an excellent album to start off your collection. From Dylan to the Doors and from Presley to Picket it has a lot of classics from the era and in fact a lot of tracks that are not in the original film.

For someone who already has a lot of albums from the 60's and 70's then you will probably find a lot of familiar tracks on this album, nevertheless it works wonders as a compilation and there is bound to be quite a few tracks that you don't have.

Certainly give the album a listen and then make up your mind. For lovers of 60's and 70's music you will be doing yourself a favour by adding this to your collection.

  • Good but Missing Some Favorites
    By A15XY6GGKD3B6D on 2004-07-21
I really enjoy this soundtrack, it has a good selection of favorite songs from the 60s and 70s, but I concur with the previous reviewer who noted some great songs featured in the movie are missing. What happened?

  • This was the first CD my Mum and Dad bought
    By A28X5H24NGZSDB on 2001-10-14
This cd has lots of old favourites.
Maybe not always my idea of the best music in the world, but it's really good for easy listening, and I know all the words!

When you're in the right mood, you'll just lap it up, and most of the time, you will be in the right mood to hear music stemming from the 60s and 70s.

The cd booklet has a wonderful blurb thing that I entirely agree with: it says: 'The movie "Forrest Gump" is about time. A simple man's journey through complicated times. The coming-of-age of a generation and a whole country. And at the heart of the story is the music. Music that lives with us, always there to remind us of the people, the places, and the events of our times. The music of "Forrest Gump" is as vital as any character - it is a character - complex and exhilirating, humorous and heartbreaking, the essence of what we once were and will always be.'

A cd that deserves a place in my collection, most definetly.

  • perfect

This Collection Is A Wonderful Set For ANY Music Library.

  • An American Soundtrack
    By A1SCJWCMQ3W3KK on 2004-12-02
When "Forrest Gump" first hit theaters, it was an instant hit - thanks to brilliant acting, a heartwarming tale, and classic music to back it up. Finding the right tunes to play as a backdrop to more than three decades of American history is quite a daunting task, but those who assembled this collection of songs rose to the challenge, creating a truly American soundtrack.

The best of the best are here, with American artists giving a true representation of what the world was like in Forrest Gump's time. From the first time young Forrest saw Elvis gyrate (`Hound Dog') to his shrimping expeditions (`Sloop John B'), each song has been chosen for its sentimental value and classic addition to the film. This is a brilliant collection, with great hits from Bob Seger, the Mamas and Papas, Beach Boys, Byrds, Simon & Garfunkel, Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, and so many more.

If you're looking for a great collection of American music, look no further. This two-disc set is an excellent addition to any music fan's collection. And if you're new to this era of music, it provides a great sampling of one of the greatest music generations ever.

    By A1YXY2CHZHCMEP on 2004-02-03
This soundtrack is perfect in many ways. It has a wide range of music but sticks to the classics and oldies. This is a good CD set for someone who enjoys like I said oldies and rock. Great songs like "Respect", "California Dreaming" And even "Mrs Robinson" appear on the cd's. There is also some extra tracks only on the cd version of the soundtrack. This is a great cd to add to your collection if you like rock, oldies ,and just enjoy good music. The movie is great too! Pick them both up it's a good buy the cd with see plenty of play time trust me.

  • Deja vu all over again
    By A2ZM15Q60VGYNQ on 2007-02-20
A gem of an anthology, a definitive compilation of some of the seminal rock songs of the 60s and 70s. Each song is so evocative of the era. This 2-CD set is like a precious timecapsule. This is the CD I'd bring with me to a desert island.

  • Doesn't look accurate
    By A2G9F68DNDI2GW on 2007-05-10
I don't own this soundtrack but I've seen the movie a ton of times. I don't see Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" on here. It was playing in the scene where Jenny almost committed suicide by standing on a ledge at some hotel. And "Stoned Love" wasn't even in the movie. Isn't this supposed to be a soundtrack for a movie, not the "best hits of...?"

  • Each song evokes something beyond what the movie portrayed which makes it a great collection
    By A29TIEN7THHJPU on 2007-08-15

The music compiled on this sound track spans years from the 50's to the 80's and contains lots of greats that give you a flavor of what was happening during those times in America. For me, each song evokes something beyond what the movie portrayed which makes it a great collection.

I have found that I can put this CD on in a mixed crowd with people of all ages and most people find the two discs set enjoyable to listen to plus it often starts some interesting conversations. Many tunes I find myself singing and dancing along to like Aretha Franklin's "Respect", which makes it a great CD to put on for a party.

  • A sweet nostalgic journey
    By A3LVL813QA4E7N on 2006-07-28
I love this collection of songs by the most representative, soulful artists of their respective eras. It isn't sappy or morose. Like the movie, it takes you in and holds you gently for just long enough before returning you to the reality of today.

  • a great soundtrack!
    By A1O93P25GT8SXV on 2007-03-28
i was so happy with this soundtrack - almost every song on here brings back memories of a great time. you can sing along with everything, and it has music for every mood.
