Golden Slumbers: A Father's Lullabyx$11.50

(96 reviews)

Best Price: $18.98 $11.50

This is a real sleeper of an album, literally. Smooth-jazz musicians--including Peter White, Dave Koz, Norman Brown, David Benoit, and others--play music here to put babies to sleep. Fans of New Age music, specifically what came out of the Pacific Northwest in the '80s, may find many of these 14 tracks reminiscent of that period. Long-time listeners of smooth-jazz radio may be reminded of the kind of ethereal, spacey music that was played in the early days of the format. Many of the songs are as obvious as Brian Culbertson's somnambulating "Brahms' Lullaby" and Koz's "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," but some are inspired choices with creative arrangements and strong performances. Koz and his brother Jeff shine on the Beatles' title tune and the other Lennon/McCartney chestnut, "Blackbird." Brown's take on James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes" is also moving, while not straying from the stillness of the concept. Perhaps the standout track is the superb performance of vocalist John Stoddart on Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely." --Mark Ruffin MPN: 48333 - UPC: 093624833321

  • Indescribably Beautiful

    By ASCGHUVBAUG4K on 2002-09-25
From the first lush, bell-like sounds of "Blackbird", it's obvious that this CD is all about the lullaby. And I've never heard a prettier collection of music in my life.

Maybe it's the sentimentality of being the father of a 15-month old, but more than a few tracks brought me near to tears, and that's on the first listen. Each expressive note evokes the sounds of a small stuffed animal, mobile, etc playing those tinky notes that sounds like the sweetest music ever played. Highlights are "Blackbird", Brahm's Lullaby, "When You Wish Upon A Star", "Golden Slumber", and....."Isn't She Lovely". The soft, amazing, understated vocal for this song creates an interpretation that floored me. Be warned - you will never forget it. It's a reworking of the song that rises well above Stevie Wonder's and really brings out the words in a whole new, beautiful way.

I'm sure this is not for everyone. It's very mellow. There's no great improvisations for the jazz purists. But it's a great sound and I think every new parent should receive a copy.

  • Just what this mommy was looking for

    By A3HZY4QLFYDXE0 on 2005-02-08
I bought this to play as background music during my son's naps. I can't tell whether he likes it better than any of the other music I put on for him, but it's my absolute favorite.

The music is relaxing but not boring. Each piece offers a gorgeous arrangement, mostly of songs you'll find familiar. Sometimes as I hear the strains of the CD coming through the baby monitor, I just feel overwhelmed. The music is so peaceful, it just makes me feel sentimental about my precious little boy and how I wish everything in his world could always be as gentle as this music is.

  • Amazing

    By A2639YCPJBABC3 on 2003-07-12
This is probably the most beautiful lullaby collection I've ever heard. My 2 1/2 year old son absolutely adores it . . . especially the versions of Hush, Baby and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. The music is far from old fashioned, yet it is amazingly relaxing and calming --- even for a very excitable little boy. While it is great for a small child, I find it the perfect music for adults to listen to when taking a nice relaxing bubble bath or trying to unwind for the evening.

I'm a huge Dave Koz fan and always adore his selection of guest artists (Peter White, David Benoit) and this CD is no exception. They all made fabulous contributions to this album.

  • It works

    By AEAND1H426CYH on 2002-10-12
We heard Dave Koz on the radio previewing the album and liked it.
Once it arrived our daughter Patti (5 months) was crying, we turned on the CD, she stopped, looked over by the speakers and stopped crying. She didn't cry for the rest of the CD and by the end we had a sleeping baby.

Musically, the album has much variety in styles, all relaxing, of modern lullabies. It will be played even when just the parents need to unwind.

  • Not just for babies

    By A2YM5NY14SFWZ1 on 2002-10-16
I bought the 5-song preview CD and used that when I went to sleep. Now that I have the full length CD I don't have to put it on repeat.

The songs are soft and soothing for anyone to go to bed with and relax their minds. These are not "cheesy" sounding songs. Plus with various artists, it features a variety of styles, from emphasizing keyboards, to sax, to vocals...anything to fit your tastes.

  • Every nursery should have this CD!
    By ABQ2PMJUIJY4N on 2003-02-16
My husband and I bought this CD for our baby the first day the CD came out. Up to this date, this is the only CD our son will listen to when he goes to bed. Dave Koz has become our son's favorite music artist! The soothing sounds of jazz along with the great voices of the artists are a sure hit in our house. You don't have to be a jazz fan to enjoy this CD.

  • Heartwarming- also try LULLABY and ANGELS ALL AROUND
    By A5F42154Q8RGD on 2003-03-16
There are several really standout tracks on GOLDEN SLUMBERS. As a father I'm moved. The smooth jazz style will appear to some a tad dated, while I prefer to think of it as reminiscient of a simpler time.
"You Can Close Your Eyes" is so tender and respectful your heart is touched.
I would also direct you to my two favorite lullaby CD's, LULLABY:a collection, and ANGELS ALL AROUND by Genie.

  • Very cool CD!!!!
    By on 2003-04-18
I love the musicians on this cd... they all compliment each other. This cd is a great bed-time cd for the young ones, but also it's nice to just listen to as background music! My daughter has grown to love what she calls "pretty music" at bed-time... and this is a wonderful addition to our collection. If you have a new-born... this is wonderful and peaceful music for anytime. If you know someone having a baby, or that has a baby... this would be the perfect gift for them!

  • A True Work and a Blessing...
    By A3CP46T7LYEYGG on 2005-01-28
My son was born @ 28 weeks and spent 68 days in the NICU at Bethesda Naval Medical Center. Nothing is more heartwrenching and helpless knowing there's nothing you can do to help your little one when they are in that situation. What I could do was to bring a CD I had bought for him a few weeks earlier, not knowing he would be born 12 weeks early. My little guy has been listening to this CD since he was just a few weeks old and it always makes him feel safe and secure knowing that he knows the sound of something familiar. This puts him in "bed mode" when we take him upstairs and it calms him down and off to sleep he goes. Now that he's almost 9 months old, he still gives us that look as if he knows that everything's OK.

This makes his mom and dad feel OK too...

  • Talented
    By A231YUQ4QFY1NL on 2002-10-20
Dave Koz is very talented, very professional. He cares about his fans and has a true passion for what he does.My friend Tim Davis sung on his album Golden Slumbers. He has a great voice and I can see why Jeff Koz recommended Tim to sing on this album.Great singer, great father.

  • The perfect gift for new parents
    By A2KSMZH4TRHL3S on 2004-04-16
This CD is amazing. My husband is a fan of David Koz and he bought this for our now 16 month old son. When I first rocked and held him to the sounds of Isn't she Lovely...I just cried at this miracle I held. The songs are very soothing, even to me and as soon as I put this CD on, my son knows it's time for sleep. Of all the many lullaby CDs I have, this is my favorite! I highly recommend it.

  • PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT ALBUM!
    By AAEQWUOFIHNY9 on 2005-09-06
The ABSOLUTE BEST lullaby album I've heard yet! I forgot to review this item when I purchased it almost a year and a half ago. We played it EVERY night for the first 7-8 months after our son was born. We moved a couple of times afterward and this album got lost in the shuffle. My son's attention was captured INSTANTLY when it began to play in another room last night! DADDY FOUND HIS CD!! My son, now 16 months, swayed from side to side with his eyebrows raised and a huge smile on his face - truly brought tears to my eyes! This is the sweetest CD with a sort of R&B or jazzy type feel! WE LOVE IT! HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! God Bless!

  • Dissappointed
    By A2ZVSTMN6YWU84 on 2005-11-05
This album is falsly advertised. For Dads??? Why??? This album is gender free because it is 95% orchastraded! Only two songs have vocals! Just because the two songs have a man singing, it would hardly make you feel that this album is specially made for Dad!

Besides my gripes, the music is mellow, pretty, and soothing. But shucks, I already have CDs that have these qualities!

  • A Wonderful Collection. Beautiful and Relaxing Music.
    By A1SF181N7WW1QB on 2002-10-03
The first night I got this CD, it played for 7 hours straight! Partly because I fell asleep on the couch listening to it.

This is a beautiiful collection of relaxing songs. Highly Recommended.

  • A Must Buy!!-A CD That's Not Just For Babies!!!
    By A3RQP09S2RW696 on 2003-02-04
This CD collection of lullabies is just fabulous and I have no kids!!! I recommend this CD to anyone looking for soothing and relaxing music. Perfect choice while soaking in a bubble bath!

  • Introducing Babies to Music
    By A3TNYZ90GE36M9 on 2003-09-09
For parents looking to introduce their newborns to the world of music, this is an excellent selection to play for them as they are headed off to dreamland. Very smooth quality jazz for little ones. I highly recommend this as a shower gift for expectant parents!

  • Very soothing music
    By A3U2RXJMV88UTY on 2004-04-04
My sister bought this for my husband and I at the birth of our baby girl. She was touched by the fact that one of the songs was titled after her neice (Charlotte's song). The CD is very soothing, relaxing and beautifully made. It's been one of our favorites all these months. If you are a "smooth jazz" fan, you'll love it!

  • The BEST Bedtime (and anytime) CD!!!
    By A2QQO7WJ6D6JSO on 2006-01-20
I've searched for a perfect bedtime CD, listened to dozens of them, ordered a bunch,.. but after I've found this one,.. well, I don't even take it out of our CD-player :). This CD is so masterfully done, I don't think I'll ever grow tired of it.

First of all, it's very soft and gentle so it doesn't stir my son with sharp notes or sudden sounds. Absolutely perfect for bedtime routine. I program my CD-player to "repeat all", and the music covers the room like the softest veil.

Then, it's extremely high-quality music. If you want to develop a good taste and love for music in your wee ones, that's the CD to play to them. Funny, I listen to this Cd every evening, and I still notice new things weaved into songs (like bird chirping and stuff).

After I tried this CD, I have already purchased 2 more as baby shower gifts - every sweet baby should be able to enjoy it :).

I highly recommend to buy it and try it. And then buy more for your friends ;).

  • Kind of a let down
    By A1Y9RF4XJZHOQS on 2006-04-01
Based on the other reviews of this album I expected it to be quite good. However, it is actually kind of sappy, and I can't really spend much time listening to it without feeling a bit unhip. My husband complains that it sounds like musak, the stuff you hear in elevators. I think that the original versions of these songs were better. However if you like 'easy listening' music you might like this CD. Also, it does act as a sleep aid, simply due to the fact that the music isn't that exciting. We haven't used this to soothe our baby to sleep much simply because we aren't too fond of the album. I also bought "Celtic Twilight Vol 3: Lullabies" and I like that a lot more.

  • A MUST for every parent or anyone who was once a child
    By A1LK04DZ2JGCDZ on 2003-01-03
I bought this CD during a summer concert featuring Dave Coz and Friends. Prior to performing a couple of the tracks, Dave shared how the CD came about. It was an awesome story. The performance actually brought a tear to my husband eye...we'd just found out right before the concert that we were expecting our first baby. I bought the CD for my husband as his first Fathers Day gift.

  • Confirmation of the power of music
    By AKJ2V3O5F1CVW on 2003-02-15
Perhaps I'm not objective enouth, as I am the father of two baby girls. One turned twenty three years old today, the other is nineteen. This music makes me long for the days when I sang them to sleep. This music is like like a fine wine. A fine relaxing collection of favorites. Bravo! I just ordered them both copies tonight.

  • Tolerable Mindless Instrumental Sold To The Masses, Avoid!
    By A3G9YSI2PLH2XS on 2003-09-03
Once I checked into this cd and listened the entire available songs in there, I finally had to turn off my stereo and considering take it to near-by retailers so I can get few dollars back. The artist plays only something so-called "gentle instrumental" or "smooth jazz", and yet he has yet mastered the skill of intrepretating the music to the audiences, even though he plays the saxophone fluently. However, i just don't see Dave Koz got any talent in conveying and delivering musical messages at all. This is very commericalized released just like his previous releases. The only people would the buy this kind of materials are those mindless listener looking for pointless instrumental to play in the office or "may be his baby boy's bedroom. The child may even cry when he gets to get to the middle of the song. The drum machine or synthesiser or whatever they used for the song caused me a headache. For serious music listener should avoid.

  • Awesome!
    By on 2003-11-13
I have been a fan of Dave Koz for quite some time. I heard about this new cd and had to have it - there are great artists performing on this cd. Every song is absolutely soothing, heartwarming, comfy and cozy. This cd is not just great for naptime or bedtime but for ANYTIME! Fantastic addition to your collection!

  • Mellow tunes
    By A2UECZKL2SCSNC on 2005-10-26
This is another great album intended for my kids room at nap time, but I find it ends up in my cd player more than theirs. It has a wide range of fantastic tunes that will mellow out the old and the young.

  • Touching and Beautiful
    By A3G2QI3MDV8XM6 on 2005-11-15
This is absolutely the best "alternative" lullaby compilation. The selections are familiar but redone in a unique way. My daughter is almost two and has fallen asleep to this every night. It has soothed her (and us) through illness and sleepless nights.

I have given this cd to other new Mothers and Fathers and they have all loved it!

  • Our favorite lullaby CD
    By A3V3XC7EKGUR83 on 2005-11-23
I got this CD when I was pregnant with my first child, and I actually liked listening to the music for me and not just for the baby! It's really fun to hear songs you recognize (like you'll be in my heart from Tarzan) and some you don't. This is definitely my favorite lullaby CD and much more interesting than most of the ones out there.

  • Sleepy time
    By A24ITXAVTIIGL on 2006-07-25
I bought this cd for my grandchildren. I wanted something soothing to play for them as they fell asleep. This cd is just that. Thank you.

  • Great CD

  • Absolutely lovely!
    By ADFB5XLP11F78 on 2006-09-01
This CD is just a beautiful compilation of relaxing music, for our daughter [and me, the "Mom"]. I've loved many of the artists for years, and was thrilled that my husband found this CD. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone that just wants to relax at the end of the day, with or without child.

  • Beautiful

    Wonderful.
Very relaxing. Dave Koz is so talented.
Also for slumbering babies try Lullaby A Collection, and
Angels All Around, by Genie (at least I think that's her name).
