(88 reviews)

Best Price: $4.52

Billy Peltzer and Kate Beringer move to New York City and meet up with their Mogwai friend, Gizmo, when a series of accidents creates a new generation of diverse gremlins. Billy, Kate, and Gizmo must once again use all their experience to prevent another catastrophe.

Zach Galligan, the star of the first Gremlins, is back, along with Phoebe Cates, his girlfriend from the first film. They're both working in an ultramodern skyscraper owned by a Donald Trump clone (a hilarious John Glover). Galligan's furry little buddy is captured by a mad scientist, who not only helps it multiply, but invests the nasty, scaly offspring with intelligence and the ability to talk. (Watch for the one that has Tony Randall's voice.) What follows is imaginative mayhem that spoofs old movies, modern television, and the conveniences of postmodern technology. In some ways, the sequel is even more inventive and laughter-inducing than the original. --Marshall Fine MPN: WARD22711D - UPC: 085392271122

  • Gremlins in Gotham

I'm not saying this just because I am a New Yorker, but GREMLINS 2--THE NEW BATCH is slightly better than the original. First, it's a much less mean-spirited film than the first (which I also gave five stars, but for different reasons). Just the fact that a character who was crushed to death in the first film, shows up in the sequel (wearing a small cast) because he really was likeable, shows that Joe Dante and the scriptwriters were going into this film for the fun of it. Second, the casting was flawless. Whoever chose Tony Randall to do the voice of the strangely-William F. Buckley-sounding, intellectual gremlin was responding to nothing short of divine inspiration. Everyone involved in this production had their hearts in the right places and the effect shows. GREMLINS 2--THE NEW BATCH is an astounding piece of comic fantasy and horror that should endure.

Gremlins 2 has a bigger scope than the first film. It takes place in Manhattan and deals with a lot more than the original did. The main difference is that Gremlins 2 is kind of a spoof of the first. With frequent references to it (even by Leonard Maltin at one point) and only 2 characters (or 3 if you include Gizmo) it's not really continuing the Gremlins story but using it to make fun of early `90s big city culture.

There are a gazillion in-jokes and dozens of cameos all over the place. Including Jerry Goldsmith who's music is even better in this movie than in the first. It is such a cool and catchy little theme. I love it.

The Gremlins seem cuter and funnier in this one. My fave Gremlin is Daffy, he's insane. The other main ones are George (the frowner), Lenny (the dumb one) and Mohawk (the one with the uh...mohawk). And of course there's Gizmo. I wish so much that Mogwai were real because he's so cute and adorable.

Rent this movie or catch it on TV. If you like it wait for Warner to release the DVD. The opportunity for extras and invention is endless.

One last thing. Stay with this movie until the credits have finished.

  • INCREDIBLY BETTER SEQUEL

    By A29HTTO0G2R8BI on 2000-08-31
Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990)

Gremlins 2: The New Batch,is the sequel to the underrated 1984 classic,Gremlins (well, sort of.) In my perfectly honest opinion,it's much better than the original and as a previous reviewer said,it's the perfect example of how a sequel should be done.

Story: Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) from the first Gremlins movie now lives in Manhattan,New York where he works for a super-rich corporation in a Skyscraper. He's an Adult now, lives a good life, and is even married.

When several workers of the corporation try to talk Mr.Wing (Keye Luke) into letting them demolish his shop so they can have room for more businesses,Gizmo (from what I can remember) escapes, but is soon captured by Scientists who work at the corporation.

Billy one day sneaks into the Labratory Gizmo is at and soon starts living with Billy again. However,a maintenace man accidently (and unknowingly) squirts Gizmo with water from a fountain.Gizmo once again spawns more Mogwais, who are MUCH nastier than in the first Gremlins.

They look uglier, are swifter and sneakier, and even use mutagenic chemicals to enhance themselves. Many of them are soon transformed into giant Spiders, flying Gargoyles,Electronic menaces, and one even talks.

Gremlins 2 is unbelieveably better than the original. The acting is once again top-notch.Galligan rocks as Billy, Howie Mandel is still fantastic at voicing Gizmo, the casting is terrific (John Glover is perfect for the role of Daniel Clamp, the corporations boss and founder) and the script is excellent and is quite unpredictable.Dante's direction is even stronger and more solid than the first Gremlins, and gives the film a (truly) hard worked feel to it.

The special effects are also mind blowing, despite that their still not CGI.Gizmo is even cuter and more likeable than in the first Gremlins (he even dresses like Rambo at one point late in the film). The Gremlins are totally brilliant. As I said earlier, they look scarier and nastier than in Gremlins, and the mutated Gremlin effects are absolutely stunning. The Giant Spider Gremlin is a way cool Monster, the Electro-Gremlin rocks big time, and the talking Gremlin is one of the most memorable characters in the History of Hollywood.

As a previous reviewer said,it's not really a sequel to Gremlins.Well,I (personally) tend to call Gremlins 2 a semi-sequel.It picks up where Gremlins left off,but "rips off" Gremlins. The way the Gremlins take over the Skyscraper is VERY similar to the classic theater scene from Gremlins and one Gremlin,Lenny, dresses like a deranged Dentist at one point and wields a nasty dental drill (Lenny is sort of like Stripe from Gremlins, who wielded a chainsaw and was very deranged). I also LOVE the Gremlin with the Spiky Mohawk (who becomes the super cool Spider) and the Electro-Gremlin,just awesome. And tell me you wouldn't want to have Gizmo for a Pet.How could you possibly hate him? He's such a brilliant and original character!

Overall,Gremlins 2: The New Batch is an unbelieveably better sequel that it's predicessor, with a stronger (and better) story even more original than Gremlins, incredible special effects, loveable and memorable characters, countless in-jokes,a wicked finale, and is HIGHLY entertaining and NEVER EVER gets boring. This is even more underrated than Gremlins, which is saying a LOT.

Buy it right now.You DO NOT know what you are missing.

    Can't wait for Gremlins 3!

  • Not particularly keen

    By A2R4XG0L7Z01V8 on 2005-02-18
I wasn't overly fussed about watching this in the first place, but thought I'd better to stop the brewing argument about to take place between my boyfriend & me. (I promise, I'll watch Indiana Jones sometime).

I couldn't really remember much about the original, except that I loved Gizmo, and I hated the other Gremlins. They seemed to get even uglier in this movie, except for that giggling one, he was cute. But he was just a giggly Gizmo really.

There are two different versions of this movie, and that's the theatrical version, and the one for 'video'. The difference is that in the theatrical version, it appears that the film begins to burn, however, in the video version, this segment is replaced by a segment which simulates a broken VCR machine. This is a really funny bit in the movie, cos I honestly thought the DVD had gone a bit loopy! And then Hulk Hogan appears - whatever happened to him?!

There are loads of references & spoofs, and stuff relating to the first movie. When one of the gremlins gets injected with the bat serum and becomes a bat, it breaks through the window and forms in the broken glass the logo for Batman, another Warner Bros. release. The dentist gremlin, who seriously freaked me out, says "Is it safe?", a reference to Marathon Man. Leonard Maltin is attacked by Gremlins for panning the 1984 movie. An obvious reference to The Wizard of Oz: one gremlin is dressed as the Wicked Witch of the West, melting, saying, "I'm melting! What a world! What a world!" The scene where Kate tells the story of encountering the flasher dressed as Abrahahm Lincoln on Lincoln's birthday was intended as a parody of a scene in Gremlins where she tells Billy about her father's accidental death one Christmas. The character Daniel Clamp, obviously based on real-life real estate tycoon Donald Trump, falls for Billy's manager, Marla Bloodstone, at the end of the movie. Donald Trump was married to Marla Maples. Joe Dante had originally planned for this movie to spoof its predecessor, and elements of this "spoof" are displayed throughout the movie (ie, Kate's monologue, the gremlins being less threatening and more funny, etc) One of the offices in Clamp Towers next to the Splice of Life was "Vectorscope Labs" from the movie Innerspace also directed by Joe Dante. Aside from Mohawk, the other three Mogwai created from Gizmo are called George, Lenny, and Daffy (the first two referring to John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men, the latter referring to Daffy Duck).

Joe Dante being the Looney Tunes mad Joe Dante, there is obviously the references to the Looney Tunes, and also, they feature at the start & end of the movie. During the end credits, Daffy Duck walks onto the screen and comments on the names in the credits, saying things like "Long, isn't it?" "You're still here? Don't you people have homes?" Normally, we don't watch through the credits on DVDs, just at the cinema, but I understood it eventually, when Daffy kept popping up. At the beginning of the film, Bugs Bunny appears on top of the Warner
Brothers Logo as in a Looney Tune Cartoon. At the very end of the film after the credits, Porkey Pig tries to say "That's All Folks", but gets interrupted by Daffy.

I'm sorry to say this movie isn't much better than the original, but then again, sequels rarely are, save a few. I enjoyed both, but they're just not that great. They're not mind-blowing, or anything, just harmless fun. Just don't make me watch Critters? I'll have nightmares after that.

OK, I've watched both movies, and I've done two reviews, can I have my Gizmo toy now please?

  • Gremlins 2: The New Batch

    By A1NSUJJCG73IRF on 2005-05-13
    Director: Joe Dante.
Cast: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, John Glover, Robert Prosky, Robert Picardo, Christopher Lee, Dick Miller, Jackie Joseph.
Rated PG-13 for cartoonish monster violence and language.
    Running Time: 107 minutes.

Perhaps one of the most perfect blends of horror and comedy, this sequel to the 1984 cult hit is arguably even better than original. Those crazy flesh-eating marsupials branch out from just tormenting small towns and promote themselves to the big-time--New York City. Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates return to take on the fiendish ghouls as they invade and terrorize the futuristic New York City high-rise that Billy Peltzer (Galligan) works.

Joe Dante, director of the original "Gremlins", as well as other horror-comedy romps such as "Piranha" and "The Howling", does a stupendous job using the gremlins as not only horrific threats to the main characters, but exploits them for social satire and surprise in-jokes. Superb supporting cast, including Dick Miller once again as the estranged hillbilly who believes that the gremlins are truly the World War II staples that the name infers. An incredibly hilarious, yet terrifying mixture that is underrated, unappreciated, and unbelievably enjoyable. Simply a campy work of art. Note: The gremlin's rendition of "New York, New York" is stupendous.

  • An Old Favorite
    By ADB8XCKNSDY5Z on 2005-07-09
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I think it's a lot better than the first Gremlins actually. The special effects are improved quite a bit at the very least. It also has a much more lighthearted tone than the first film.

What I like about this film is it's like a violent family film. It's pretty unique. Monsters killing tons of people, and then getting melted into goo at the end. Sounds pretty violent. Even looks pretty violent. Still, it has a family film feel to it. The gremlins do a lot of cheesy comic routines, appropriate for every member of the family.

I can't see how the good guys were able to play these role with a straight face, because the gremlins are goofy as heck. I like the gremlins. Gizmo is all right too.

If you have kids around the age of 12, rent this for them and see what they think of it.

  • The new and wilder batch of Gremlins
    By A2QRB6L1MCJ53G on 2001-01-22
"Gremlins 2 - The New Batch" is a much funnier, wilder, and surprisingly even a better movie than the original "Gremlins." Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates are back in this hilarious sequel, and so is Gizmo. Gizmo's old caretaker dies and Gizmo is picked up by some scientists who want to do experiments on him. Billy (Zach Galligan) rescues Gizmo and tells him to stay put until he can take him home. However, Gizmo doesn't stay put and (yep, you guessed it) he gets wet and produces even more of the ecstatic Gremlins than ever before. This time, the Gremlins terrorize a building that belongs to the new business, Clamp. It's up to Gizmo and the people of New York City to find a way, if there is one, to stop the wildly insane Gremlins from taking over the whole city.

"Gremlins 2 - The New Batch" is 100 times funnier than the first movie, and you'll know what I mean when you see some of the parts such as one of the Gremlins trying to be a dentist and some Gremlins duking it out with the Duke himself, John Wayne, with some guns in a western movie. The special effects are also a lot better. And the Gremlins are now taking new forms such as electricity, one Gremlin becomes smart and can talk distinguishly, and there's even one that can fly, and one that is in the form of a huge and terrifying spider. These Gremlins are wilder and more uncontrollable by the minute!

Pretty much, "Gremlins 2 - The New Batch" is a funnier and more upbeat movie than the original, and that makes for an even more entertaining movie. There's not many sequels to great movies that can even stand up to the original, and especially not many that are better than the original, but "Gremlins 2 - The New Batch" is a huge exception. I recommend this movie to anybody who liked "Gremlins" and to anybody who likes comedy movies at all. This is a must have!

  • Two Versions Of The Movie.
    By A3BN8S0FFHK3XC on 2001-12-22
There are two versions of this movie around. Remember that scene wher Christopher Lee walks up to Billy and sais he saw a gremlin? On the video, the picture gets screwed up (because the gremlins are sapposed to be fooling around with the projector) and then they get in a gun fight with John Wayne. However, when this is on movie channels (HBO, Encore, Starz) a very different version of this scene happens. The picture gets screwed up and then we get some very quick shots of Black-And-White nude woman, followed by watching a mother (in color) pulling her daughter out of a theatre and complaining to a manager. Then, a man comes down with a tangled up projector and screams "There are Gremlins in the projector". The manager walks into the theatre and talks to a big guy named Hunk, who screams "You Gremlins run the rest of Gremlins 2 right now!" He then looks at the screen and sais "Sorry folks. It won't happen again." The whole gunfight part is not there. I think a DVD should be released with both versions of the movie available, because there is no video featuring this scene (fortunatly I recorded it) and I'm sure fans would like to own both cuts of the movie. Don't you agree?

If you found my reveiw helpful (I hope you did) please vote for me. Thanks a lot!

  • Its more than a sci-fi comedy !
    By A2DWWZ6QIWBJ8D on 2005-12-20
Gremlins 2 should definately be considered a superior sequel. Everything about this movie is top notch and for B-flicks that usually is not the case. Even the critics who despised the first Gremlins gave this movie good reviews. So much creativity was put into this film that it surprises me Spielburg didn't return to the project(Joe Dante did return). Everything from character development, stage settings, the music, and overall story were well thought out and you can tell that the actors enjoyed playing their parts and had a good time on the set. Gremlins 2 by no means takes itself too seriously. The first portion of the movie gives you the impression that it will be rushed though it doesn't end up that way. Four of the characters including Gizmo return from the first Gremlins and the gremlins themselves are designed a bit differently though it is definately for the better. Regarding my comment on the creativity of this movie, you must see it for yourself. This gremlins sequel (superior sequel, mind you) gets the DVD treatment it deserves like Terminator 2 did in terms of bonus features (okay, Terminator 2 had alot more but you get my point). Each feature is worth viewing and there are also some easter eggs a.k.a hidden features. At first I hoped for a Gremlins 3 but I don't see how it would rank up with this one. Even if you happened to not care much for the first Gremlins, you still should give Gremlins 2 a look. I honestly know someone who didn't care too much for Gremlins but told me they really enjoyed the sequel.

  • COOLEST MOVIE EVER!!!
    By on 2005-12-22
I really liked the old Gremlins a lot but this is even better. Gizmo is once again a lovable hero. This time the Gremlins are more computer enhanced and look better. One idea that I thought was cool for this movie was a bunch of different Gremlins. There's the vegetable gremlin, the bat gremlin, the spider gremlin and a bunch of other wacky ones. Another thing that I liked about this movie was that their "evil doings" were more lighthearted than in the first. In the first one, their deeds were violent and lifethreatening but at the same time funny. In this one they're all goofy and cartoonish. I really think that these movies are the best!!

  • More Antics From Gizmo And His Rowdy Relatives
    By A2ZHH7AK83JB5G on 2007-10-21
GREMLINS 2 is a solid sequel that has its reptilian tongue planted firmly in its scaly cheek. The setting has moved from a small town, Kingston Falls, to the ultimate high tech fantasy building in Manhattan. There the young lovers from the original Gremlins, Billy (Zach Gilligan) and Kate (Phoebe Cates), find employment as well as their old pal Gizmo the Mogwai being tortured in a science lab. As we learned in the first film when Gizmo gets wet he multiplies and his "offspring" are mischievious to say the least. This new batch is soon fortified with special potions from the lab giving them diverse powers including flight, web spinning, great intelligence and apparently the ability to produce musical spectaculars. Pop culture references abound, some of which are all ready a bit dated. Some of the sight gags that may have worked well in the theater do not really translate to the small screen. Despite these minor flaws this is an entertaining film which is suitable for tweens and their families.

  • Brillantly horrible...
    By A3S9887MZFNNH1 on 2000-03-07
This is better than the first with a lot more gags and monsterous Gremlins. Gizmo looks more cuter than ever and I hope they can one day make another one...

  • Great Sequal
    By A1W661TC1P6VQI on 2000-04-26
This is a true gem in the Gremlins movies. Much better than the first. This time, you get a good look at to why all the Gremlins are attacking people (Something that was avoided in the first film). Pretty much all the original acters were in it (Though I find it hard the old guy and his wife survived the snow plow in the first one [Plus everyone acted as if they died]), the old guy died very quikly in the film. But does everything that girl think about bad? First Christmas, now Abraham Lincon, she needs a life.

  • Best Reviewed Film of Its Year -- Loving Homage to Movies
    By A388QZBMSR18T3 on 2000-02-14
Superb satire, send-up, and homage, "Gremlins 2" is light years better than the original. Director Joe Dante creates a loving satire of horror movies with Christopher Lee spoofing mad scientists, Phoebe Cates spoofing the first "Gremlins" film, and Tony Randall as the Genius Gremlin spoofing everything from Susan Sontag to Broadway. Watch on a very large screen television so you can see all the details (the homage to It's a Wonderful Life on the monitors in John Glover's office; it's in color and then in black and white), the Gremlin tee shirts with Gizmo on them with a red circle and line through him; the label on the Canadian beer at the new "trendy" Canadian restaurant etc. The film satirizes Ted Turner and Donald Trump in the character played by John Glover as well as trends in movie making (listen for the announcement about the showing of Casablanca with the new, happy ending). And watch for one of the most brilliantly directed scenes in any movie: Just after Gizmo gets wet and bears some offspring, pay attention when janitor John Astin is on the phone describing how the younger workers are forcing out the older ones -- while the new Gremlins are doing just that to Gizmo. It's as if he's reporting what is happening to Gizom.

All in all, Dante out did himself with this film. It's a shame that Warner Bros. did not know how to promote it. Interestingly, "Premiere" magazine's chart of movie reviews for the year in which Gremlins 2 was released showed that it was the best reviewed film of the year, averaging 3 1/2 stars from the nation's film critics. It's a loving homage to films in general -- don't miss it, especially if you love a big Broadway number.

Coda: I met director Joe Dante in 2000 when the Chicago International Film Festival honored him ... with a showing of Gremlins 2. Turns out that he did the film only because Warner Bros. insisted -- it was the only way he could get to direct other films for them. So he set out to make Gremlins 2 the "sequel to end all sequels" in Dante's words. He may have succeeded.

  • Starts off slow, but when it picks up...IT PICKS UP!
    By AXFPFO28Y04BW on 2001-05-22
I'd been wanting to see this movie for over 10 years. I was only 7 when it was released to video. Everytime we went to the video store I would see the cover to this movie. The chair, the claw marks, the green scaly hand with the cigar...I was captivated. But, alas, my parents wouldn't get it; they said it would be too scary.

Well, just a few months ago, I was starved for entertainment. Then, at SUNCOAST, there it was. GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH, on sale. I snapped it up and drove right home to view it.

Oh Lord, was I not disappointed.

Once the movie was over, I was still laughing my head off half-an-hour later.

While it helps to have seen the original, it is not necessary (for example, I haven't). This movie begins rather slowly, re-introducing us to various characters.

But once Gizmo gets wet, the movie goes into overdrive.

In my opinion, the funniest part was the intelligent Brain Gremlin and his big musical number near the end. I don't want to spoil it, so I won't reveal the exact details.

    Highly recommended!

  • Better Than The First!!!
    By AB82EKHDKP2H8 on 2002-06-12
Gremlins 2 brings us to New York City. Billy and Kate now work for building magnate Daniel Clamp. After Mr. Ving's death, Gizmo comes back into their lives after a daring rescue by Billy from a genetic research lab. Of course, Gizmo gets wet and havoc reigns superme in New York-gremlins-style. Everyone's favorite new gremlin is the talking Brain Gremlin, played to perfection by Odd Couple legend Tony Randall. My favorite gremlin, however, is one I call the Sex Gremlin, an all-green female who literally falls for Mr. Forrester, the company's gremlin-disbelieving floor manager, which makes the chessy but funny men's room wedding scene at the end of the film my absolute favorite. Billy's father at the end of the first movie said it best: "Look out all the windows, check in all the closets and cupboards, look under all the beds, cause you never can tell, there just might be a gremlin in your house!" Well, New York, you better start doing the same. Because the Gremlins and Gizmo are back with a vengance. Give this movie a rent and just see what I mean.

  • Howling, underrated classic.
    By A1XX5797TIZT5Q on 2002-08-24
The relative financial failure of Gremlins 2: The New Batch in its theatrical run was one of the gross injustices of late-'80s, early-'90s cinema. Gremlins 2 is superior to the first in every single way -- richer, funnier, faster-moving, better lit and shot, far better acted, and the script by Charlie Haas is light years ahead of its clumsy Chris Columbus-scripted predecessor.

Gremlins 2 gets my vote for best sequel of all time. While The Godfather, Part II, Terminator 2 and The Empire Strikes Back tend to lead that poll, all these previous entries had pretty strong predecessors. On the other hand, Gremlins, the original film, was an interesting and sometimes funny little film, but Gremlins 2 really improved on every front and came up with something nobody has ever seen before.

Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates are ten times more interesting in the sequel than in the original, probably thanks to the script. As a condition for director Joe Dante committing to do the sequel the studio had given him full control of the content, and Dante and writer Haas do a tremendous job in weaving this zany world together, which is like Die Hard meets Dawn of the Dead meets Gremlins. The comedic elements are definitely superior, and the concept of giving each gremlin a distinct personality is immediately winning, the "brain" gremlin and the crazy loose-cannon gremlin being especially hilarious. (Phoebe Cates' interactions with the loose-cannon gremlin are just priceless.) The film is ripe with satirical ideas and populated with highly charming characters. In the first Gremlins, the "bad" characters are simply bad without much humanity to them. Here, all the "villainous" characters are given their share of complexity, right down to the riotous ending.

Again, it is baffling to me that the first film, interesting at best and clunky at worst, was a huge box-office hit while this superlative sequel literally ended the franchise. (Dante had said in an interview that the studio, not believing in the film, had opened Gremlins 2 against Dick Tracy in an effort to undermine Warren Beatty's film, thus damaging Gremlins 2's theatrical take.) But that's what video and DVD are for, and if you've never seen this film, it's definitely a winner.

  • Gremlins 2/a very cool film.
    By on 2004-06-16
Gremlins 2 is a nice film that is even better than the original. I like how it spoofs everything, and I love the new gremlins. The first batch looked sort of rough and raggedy[but still interesting],while the new batch is bright and vivid.Plus,Gizmo was a blast.I am REALLY looking forward to a third sequal, with CGI/Animatronic gremlins[a sort of Jurassic Park thing].Gremlins 2 is a wild and rowdy romp.

  • Funny movie
    By AF7JCEOIGIS4N on 2004-12-24
Gremlin movies are never very scary, but they are funny. This movie is especially funny because the Gremlins take all these potions that change them. There is the smart one, the gargoyle, the spider, and the lightning bolt. Christopher Lee is in this movie as a crazy scientist. He is funny in that role. If you are looking to be scared, don't watch this movie. If you are looking for a funny movie, try this one out. Make sure to stick around for the ending in the bathroom. :)

  • Probably the finest sequel ever made
    By A220FJEQNGMSRN on 2006-08-28
Gremlins 2: The New Batch is one of those rare sequels that's a lot more fun than the original. A virtual live action Looney Tune with more movie references than you can count and some great digs at 80s-90s corporate culture ("Have a powerful day!" urge the PA systems), it's a constant delight. Among the many targets are Yuppies, Batman, Eva Marie Saint, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, movie critics, projectionists, colorization ("Today on the Clamp Cable Network - Casablanca, now in color with new improved happy ending!"), Kander and Ebb musical numbers, Rambo, King Kong and Marathon Man's dentistry scene, re-enacted by a cross-eyed Gremlin version of Ed Wynn, ensuring that if you don't like one joke, another one you will like will probably be along soon. Tony Randell is the standout in the cast as the `Brain' Gremlin, although John Glover's childishly enthusiastic, deliriously misguided and irrepressibly irresponsible Donald Trump-Ted Turneresque mogul nearly steals the show. Even Christopher Lee demonstrates the sense of humor that's so tragically lacking from the man in real life. You also get to see Jerry Goldsmith demonstrating why he never took up acting ("Did she say she saw a rat?"). Stupid fun was never so smart.

The extras are good - a huge batch of deleted scenes, gag reel, brief featurette revealing Gizmo's increasing egomania, trailer and the alternate video remote sequence from the video release as an Easter Egg (the DVD is the original cinema version).

I love this movie! The first "Gremlins" was scary, the sequel is hilarious. The idea of the gremlins running amok inside a New York high-rise,is great. This movie has so many in-jokes I have to watch it over and over to find them all,and i'm not done yet.I have probably seen this film 25 times. I've written this before, but "I love Joe Dante films"!!They are the best.He is the most underrated director working today.every film he makes doesn't disappoint. He always works with the best people.Jerry Goldsmith's scores for his films are thegreatest. The critics just don't get Dante's humour, and alot of moviegoers don't either.Gremlins 2 is definately not oscar material, but it is not supposed to be.It's just entertainment, and on that level it succeeds perfectly. If you loved the first gremlins, are a huge movie fan,or just want to laugh like crazy.See this movie.

Distinctly inferior to the original Gremlins, but although immensely silly, this is generally an entertaining sequel. A good way to kill an evening if you liked the first Gremlins -- it's inspired and imaginative -- but ultimately it isn't exactly the gem the first one was.

  • Now THIS is how sequels should be done!
    By AYMM2KV2UJDZ on 2000-07-31
    Note: does contain spoilers.

In my honest opinion,Gremlins 2:The New Batch,is a brilliant sequel to the original Gremlins. It's also the perfect example of how a sequel should be done.We once again have a brilliantly written story that's very tight. The Gremlins are back, this time taking over a Manhattan SkyScraper. There much deadlier and nastier than in Gremlins 1.They drink mutagenic chemcals that cause them to mutate into very nasty creatures. They transform into mutant spiders,Gargoyles, and one even gets an ability to talk. The Gremlins once again employ some weaponry, including chainsaws, machine guns, and dental drills. The special F/X are absolutely spectacular. The Gremlin F/X are awesome, and the mechanical F/X themselves are great. The music is magnificent, and the film NEVER gets boring.Director Dante is even more experienced and stronger here, giving the film an very well made and hard worked feel to it.There are plenty of in jokes and gags,so expect to be in stitches throughout the entire thing. Overall,Gremlins 2:The New Batch is an excellent and HIGHLY entertaining follow up to Gremlins 1.It's also the perfect example of how a sequel should be done.Buy it now!

Rated PG-13 for some menacing violence and brief language.

  • THE GREATEST SEQUEL OF ALL TIME?.......
    By A2VILJFIXDIX11 on 2000-10-26
.......Probably not, but it is certainly up there with the best, most of the originals return in this sequel. Smalltown folk, Billy (Zach Galligan) and Kate(Phoebe Cates) move to Big Apple, the only thing is, the furry critter that started all the trouble in the first movie, Gizmo, also turns up. And sooner than you can say ''gooey, sticky pods'' there are more little fuzzballs running about; and you know what happens when the rules(Don't feed them after mignight, etc)aren't followed: Scary, Green, GREMLINS! This time they set about an office block in NY, and in the genetics dept., things go from bad to worse, with the Gremlins(now multiplied tenfold)DRINKING GENES, and taking on those genes' persona:eg. Brain Gremlin, Spider Gremlin. The way that the Brain Gremlin is executed is surprisingly effective. Great acting, and some brilliant comedic moments, ''Gremlins 2-The New Batch'' is a refreshing sequel, that is well worth a look.

  • Inspired Insanity
    By A3SK3DYN7SH1PS on 2000-12-03
While I hate to be one of those people that rates a complete five stars to a movie, this movie deserves it.

I'm the only one I know (besides my little brother) who thinks this movie is great. The best way I can describe it is as an hour and a half Warner Brothers cartoon. This is backed up by the appearance of Daffy and Bugs at the beginning.

Don't watch this movie if you're expecting a retread of the original. This movie is all about the complete insanity of the gremlins themselves. It's not scary, it's just insane.

But this is the type of movie I love. You can feel the inspired and insane creativity the writers and director of this movie. Every time I watch this movie it reminds me of the first time I saw it in the theatres. I walked out with the same adranaline buzz the filmmakers must have felt while making it. My god, when the gremlins break into the genetics lab and start mutating. . .

I don't think I could describe it any better to those who might not appreciate it. And I don't think I need to describe it anymore to those who would. You know who you are, and you know you need to see this movie.

"Start spreading the news. . ."

  • Funnier then the first!
    By A2JL0VYICIF82E on 2001-01-07
This movie is not as dark as the first(although it does have some gruesome scenes)is very funny and has some great special effects. Now the little beasts are loose in a giant skyscraper and have broken into a genectics lab and are mutating into bizzare creatures. They must be stopped before night or else they will escape and start terrorizing New York.Zach Galligan returns as Billy and our favorite Mogwai Gizmo is spectacularly brought to life by great special effects. All in all a great film even though it didn't do to well at the box office.

  • The only sequel that spoofs the original
    By A1RBB2EJHNRLJB on 2002-08-27
This is by far one of the most unique sequels I've ever seen. The entire movie is merely a spoof of the original. I can't think of any other movie that does that, or does that so well. It's obvious the writers wanted to avoid making just a repeat of the first film, which is often the fate of a sequel. Instead, Joe Dante throws some zaniness into the plot to make it a totally original story, with just enough elements from the first film to keep the original Gremlins fans happy. I strongly recommend this DVD!

  • Hillarious Sequal Gets The Real Deal DVD Treatment!
    By APM06HT7JIPZ5 on 2003-06-05
GREMLINS 2 is an overall underrated sequal that I feel is actually superior to the first. The two are very different films. The first one is a merging of horror, comedy, family film, and looney tune. Meanwhile, the sequal is just an all-out comedy, and in that perspective it succeeds brilliantly. There are more and more jokes to discover every single time you watch the film, and it therefore never loses its comic touch. I also much prefer Rick Baker's gremlin design than that of Chris Walas for the original. Anyone with a taste for gag-filled, non-stop hillarity will love this film. In the end, it even comes off as a spoof of itself! Brilliant!

GREMLINS 2 isn't labeled "Special Edition" like the original was, but it is, in fact, a much better DVD in terms of both film presentation/quality and extras. The main thing that sticks out for me is the collection of deleted scenes and outtakes. They're almost as hillarious as the film itself!

If you like GREMLINS, you'll most likely love GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH. And if you didn't the first one, you'll probably get a kick outta the sequal anyway!

  • Great DVD!!!! Better then the 1st IMO...and heres an EGG!!!!
    By ANAYSRE3LX8GZ on 2004-05-01
Gremlins 2. One of the very few seaqulls thats as good as the original... possibly better! depending on who you ask?

I wont waste your time with a review, i'm sure theres plenty of them already... but i will say, if you own this DVD and feel a little disapointed that it is the movie release version, and not the telivision version? Then I have some good news for you, if you havent already discovered this?

If you go to the special features, go down and highlight the GAG REEL, then press right -> and you should have highlighted the gremlins hands...push OK and you can veiw the scene from the video version where the gremlins take over the movie, and go into the John Wayne film ..ect, instead of the bit where Hulk Hogan tells the gremlins off! So those of you who where disapointed that wasnt included....well, it is! and thats how to find it!!!!
