  • Joseph Pilates' Clear Vision

    By A2Q7R91CIGVC73 on 2003-04-18
I am currently an apprentice in training to become a certified Pilates instructor. I agree with some reviewers who think this DVD is fast. But too fast? Hardly. Joseph Pilates had a clear vision of how the body should move, and this DVD documents his clear vision with the proper exercises, tempos, and transitions. This DVD moreover has a pre-basic sequence that is slow and steady in order to safely prepare viewers for getting a good workout in the basic, intermediate, and advanced levels.

As an apprentice, I wonder why so many other videos change Joseph Pilates' method. Specifically, why do so many videos slow the exercises down to a point where people lose the necessary mental concentration and physical energy required to achieve a good workout? I of course agree that providing basic instruction is important. Yet when videos change Joseph Pilates' method through overmodification of exercises, creation of new exercises, and alteration of rhythms, I feel strongly that these videos misrepresent the method.

Other Pilates videos have something to offer, yet they neglect to demonstrate the energy, rhythm, and exciting dynamics that Classical Pilates faithfully depicts.

Some reviewers have said, too, that the master instructor on this DVD does not count repititions of exercises. First, the number of repititions for each exercise are on screen. Second, we know from history books, newspaper articles, old film footage of Joseph Pilates teaching students, and speaking to people who actually studied with Joseph Pilates, it is clear that he did not count every repitition. He focused upon the articulation of movement, the individual's strengths and weaknesses, and the overall flow of his student's workout.

If you want to see Joseph Pilates' clear vision of his complete mat workout series, and if you want to really learn his original method, get this DVD.

  • Fast Pilates!

    By A2RNUPVSNW1ZXX on 2002-11-04
I have been doing Pilates for a month now. I had to set this DVD aside for 3 weeks before I could try this workout. It is FAST! On my other tapes there is a lot of instruction and the exercises are performed slowly.

On this one the BASIC workout has 10 exercises and is 7 minutes long. The instruction is given, as the moves are being performed, not before. It is great, but it will take you time to really know the exercises through and through before you are able to follow along.

The Intermediate workout has 15 xercises and is 12 minutes long. On my other DVD's, 15 xercises amounts to at least 45 minutes. I do agree with this DVD, but like I said it will take you time to really know the exercises before you can follow along at this fast pace- A pace like in no other Pilates tape I know of. The exercises themselves are classic Pilates and are done very well and gracefully.

The advanced workout has 25 exercises and is 20 minutes long. This one is good and the man doing the exercises actually sweats a lot, something I have yet to see in any other Pilates film. This is a really challenging workout!

The quality of this DVD is outstanding. You are sure to get a classic Piliates workout of the highest caliper. I do wish there was a one minute pause between exercises so you have time to get out of one exercise and into the next one. It will take you a lot of practice before you can follow along with the people in this workout, but the rewards will be superior to the other tapes. I find it really nice to have so many workouts one one DVD. An amazing value for such quality. I suggest you buy Brooke Silar's book The Pilates Body as well. This book has all the exercies of this DVD, but it also explains them in fine detail that is missing in this DVD.

  • Forget the much-hyped Winsor Pilates

    By A28AH0KVFBFCTI on 2005-01-06
Now I know I haven't taken any classes in Pilates and I've only tried one other 'method' on DVD, but it was during my third week on Winsor Pilates that I realized I wasn't satisfied. In checking reviews from the more experienced consumers, I learned that the breathing technique Mari instructs us to follow (in through the nose and out through the nose) was wrong. That may seem like nothing to most people, but breathing is a key aspect in Pilates. And also in exercise in general. After searching through many many reviews (because I prefer to know what I'm buying before I waste my money), it seemed like this DVD was my best bet for a good workout with Pilates in its most original, unadulterated form.

Keep in mind that by the time the DVD had arrived, I had been using Winsor Pilates for four weeks (Sunday is my only day of rest) and the results were still disappointing to me. Well, I popped in this DVD and watched all the way up to the advanced workout (to try to figure out where I would fit in) and watched a good portion of the discussion (which was informative though slightly boring at times). I was able to start with the intermediate workout. For the most part it was easy, but there were exercises which were new to me (which I was glad to see). I'm still struggling a little two weeks later to perfect these exercises, but it has been worth it to me. Not only are these routines brisk, but they don't take much time at all. The intermediate is about 15 minutes long and it leaves me feeling relaxed and pain free (including relief from headaches and back aches which I tend to get a lot). In fact, my back was very weak for most of my life. I had a hard time keeping my posture straight, bending was very painful, and sometimes, like much older people, I wouldn't be able to stand up straight after bending over for a short time. Now my back is very strong and sturdy and my posture is improving all on its own.

One thing that impressed me was that I felt sore the day after switching from Winsor to Classical Pilates. Not too sore to move, but sore enough that I could tell I was getting a better workout.

Now I do have one problem with the DVD. The voice overs are done by someone with a foreign accent and it might take a while to get used to it. It all depends on the person. For me, it took a few days of exercise. This is not a big problem and it's not something you can't get past so I won't remove any stars for that.

The setting is very bland, but I think that's a very good thing. It keeps distractions to a minimum. You're watching one person doing the exercises and receiving instructions to help you follow along. Each exercise smoothly flows into the next. Pilates has gone from just exercise to beautiful art for me and I couldn't stop now even if I wanted to. Best of all, I can see the improvements in my body and I feel better about myself.

If you're looking for a Pilates DVD, I would definitely recommend this one.

  • Finally, A Pilates Video to Believe In

    By A3JKKIMTS2HH6C on 2003-02-21
Just last year I was a basic level student who had never tried Pilates. I was so thrilled about the Pilates method that I wanted to become a certified instructor! The question was where to do my training and which certification program was best. As in any business, you have to ask a lot of questions and use your instincs.

When I asked several professionals about training programs, as well as asking about supplemental material such as books and videos, several people recommend Classical Pilates. So I purchased their DVD Complete Mat Workout Series and DVD Complete Universal Reformer Series. Unbelievably amazing!

I had no idea that Pilates movement vocabulary was so extensive! And I learned what Joseph Pilates really wanted from his students. He was a tough guy who also wanted his work to show some style. Whoa! The Classical Pilates' intermediate and advanced levels are clean, strong, and smooth! All I have to say is Joseph Pilates' method is challenging (when done the right way) even in the most basic exercises, which Classical Pilates demonstrates in its "Modified Basic" workout. The mind-body benefits are awesome! Thank heaven that Classical Pilates does NOT try to reinvent the wheel the way so many other videos and teachers do by adding new exercises or changing Joseph Pilates time-honored workouts.

Thank you Classical Pilates! I hope you film ALL of Joseph Pilates equipment, like the Wunda Chair, Cadillac, and so on!

  • A Collection Unsurpassed

    By AQOSFWG61AL99 on 2004-01-19
Although the Classical Pilates Technique DVDs were not shot in an exotic location or on a luxurious set, these are the finest Pilates DVDs on the market. They exhibit the high standards of instruction required of all who were trained in the tradition of Romana Kryzanowska.

I have read in other reviews that the instruction does not focus enough on the Breath and must offer my opinion. Joseph Pilates himself said: "Above all, learn to breathe properly." By that, Mr. Pilates meant to take full inhalations and complete exhalations. He believed in a deep lateral breath. My beginning students are always concerned with when to inhale and exhale and I tell them to be more concerned with how, not when, to breathe. The body will find its own natural pattern to assist in the movement.

In Ms. Ungaro's directions, I have found a new path to familiar routines and with my own students, I now use many of the powerful images that Mr. Liekens delivers throughout his voiceovers. Two of the DVDs in the collection include discussions, from which much additional information about the Pilates method can be learned. All in all, this collection of Pilates instruction remains unsurpassed.

  • Here's to preservation.
    By A25HJEIDT3I3IB on 2003-06-11
There are not enough words to adequately describe the gift of this DVD. Here is the matwork of the Pilates method, presented beautifully and clearly, demonstrated with grace and enthusiasm. I would not necessarily recommend this DVD to a total newcomer to Pilates for the purpose of learning the work, simply because it is not broken down for instruction. However, for someone who has had a session or two, or taken some classes, it's great. It would be particularly useful to watch the modified basic and basic workouts a few times before trying them. My only caveat to buyers is that there is no instruction, only fabulous coaching from Bob Liekens.
This is NOT, however a criticism of the DVD. It is just a note. There is no better DVD/video in which to see the exercises demonstrated. This is the gem of the bunch.

  • If you THINK you know what Pilates is...
    By A2F7UCDYPS7YBA on 2003-02-14
I read the rave reviews for this Classical Pilates DVD, and I have to say that it wasn't EXACTLY what I was expecting. After doing a few of The Method programs (kind of a fusion of yoga and Pilates), I thought I was pretty ready to face the music and try the pure form of Joseph Pilates' technique. But, whoa....this DVD is pretty intense!

The program is broken up into 5 sections, ranging from modified basic to super advanced. I began with the basic workout, and unlike Method tapes, the pace is VERY fast. Each workout lists the number of reps you will be doing of each exercise in the top corner of the screen, as you follow the model performing them in real time. The reps are done before you know it, and you're on to the next exercise. For those time-conscious exercisers who are familiar with the traditional Pilates exercises, this will probably work for you. The entire basic workout felt like it took all of 15 minutes. However, if you want more explanation of things and smoother transitions between exercises, try Method programs like Pilates: Beginning Mat Workout or Pilates for Dummies.

Skimming to the Super Advanced just to see what I could potentially be in for, I watched some pretty intense moves. The DVD recommends these exercises as supplements if you want to increase the intensity of your Pilates workout, but these are not for the faint of heart! Just TRY lying on your back, throwing your legs over your head, and somehow end up standing up perfectly balanced on one leg. Definitely something not presented in intro Pilates programs!

All in all, this DVD is true to form: the classical Pilates program is presented by professionals who know are very experienced in the traditional technique. Exercises are explained pretty well (although a bit on the fast side), and it's still a good workout for your "powerhouse" (a.k.a., your core muscles: abdominal and back).

Added features: There is also an introduction by the makers of the DVD explaining why they felt it necessary to make a pure form Pilates video program, as well as a semi-circle discussion about Joseph Pilates exercises and the merits of the program.

  • perfect for progression
    By on 2002-09-19
This is the fourth pilates video/dvd I've purchased. I've gotten something different from each one, but if I were to recommend any of them to a new student of pilates, this would be it. The key is to practice the workout in each level until you have mastered it, then to progress to the next level. After practicing mat workouts for about 9 months, I bought this and was able to perform the intermediate workout and was delighted that I could do the entire workout in (?) 15 minutes or so. This workout moves smoothly through the routine without sporadic stopping for explanations or for "new movements" which I have found tiresome in other videos. Once your have gotten accustomed to the "new movement" the slowdown in the workout is distracting. This workout is one that I look forward to doing every day, for a smooth and complete quick workout that is every bit as good as the longer but choppier 30 - 45 minute workouts already in my collection. When I am ready, the longer advanced workout advises learning one new movement at a time -- good advice. When I have mastered it, it too is smooth and flowing. Also, with 4 or 5 workouts all in one package, this one is a real bargain.

  • Good Instruction For The Body and Soul
    By A28T64DLT8BJO3 on 2004-10-01
I'm a good consumer. When I buy stuff online I always read reviews first. It's a good idea to read comments by disappointed reviewers. So I did. Several people said this video doesn't have much instruction, so I hesitated buying it. But other reviews said this video was top notch. Hmmmm.....

Because a lot of instructors liked this video, I took a risk. I figured instructors are professionals, and they generally know more than people just learning Pilates. Well, I'm glad I did. When I listened to the master teacher describe what I should be doing, what muscles I should be using, and what I should be feeling, I really felt this was a valuable video. There is a lot of excellent instruction on this video.

The lesson here is: be a good consumer but listen to your instincts. It paid off for me!

  • Worth More Than 5 Stars!
    By A3NWXJGRN9KBYU on 2003-03-17
It seems that every few years we are introduced to the newest exercise method guaranteed to change your body and your life. The reason Pilates has thrived for almost a century is that it works. Although it takes just over half an hour to complete the 34 exercises having as few as three to five repetitions each in the Advanced Mat routine, this workout is complete. Performed daily, even the Basic 10-minute workout will strengthen your body and improve your posture. Joseph Pilates believed that fewer repetitions of an exercise done properly benefit the body more that many repetitions done incorrectly, and excessive repetitions merely serve to fatigue the muscles and are counter-productive to true physical fitness. While Pilates is good for anybody, admittedly, it is not for everybody. But if you want a total, intelligent workout for your body, mind and spirit, try Pilates.

If you want classic Pilates, try this DVD. It is a faithful depiction of the exercise method originally known as Contrology, produced by a group of people obviously devoted to upholding the tradition, and represents the spirit and purpose of Joseph Pilates' method with great enthusiasm and integrity. Because the workouts are performed in real time, you are able to use the tape by either working out along with, or learning the exercises from the DVD and working without at your own pace. The instructions are comprehensive and the demonstrations are precise and energetic. From a range of camera set-ups, the exercises are presented clearly and completely. I began with the Basic workout and progressed through the Intermediate and to the Advanced levels. I have received a greater awareness of my own physical fitness through Pilates by working with this series, and I continue to refer back to individual exercises frequently as I advance in my practice. I recommend the book "Pilates Body in Motion" written by the video's Commentator Alycea Ungaro, as a brilliant companion to this DVD, since her work also presents these workouts and echoes the values and standards of this superlative production.

  • A review for beginners from a beginner
    By A13YMF8Z03V1DR on 2004-02-12
As the title states, this review is geared towards beginners since I'm just a beginner myself. When I first read reviews, I was worried by those who said this dvd offered little instruction and was a poor choice for beginners. After I finally decided to buy this dvd, I'm glad I did. Perhaps this dvd is not good for a "fitness" beginner, but if you're in decent shape, have the discipline for routine exercise, and looking for a challenge, the dvd is perfectly fine for you as a "pilates" beginner.

If you're in good shape and already have a strong exercise regimen that includes abdominal work, weight lifting, and cardio, the modified basic and basic workout on this dvd will merely serve as a useful introduction. In themselves, they are way too short to break a sweat and the moves are modified to be easy. Still, the they provide useful insight into pilates moves and form, while also showing how one would modify a move if it is too hard. After watching them once, I was able to go through the two basic workouts with ease. The intermediate workout presented a true starting point. After watching it once and going through the workout once with the "pause" button handy, I was able to insert the intermediate workout into my daily routine. Thus, for a beginner to pilates, if you take the time to study the dvd first, you should have no problem. Also, you can easily add to the simpler routine--for example, the final push up exercise in the advanced routine can be easily added to the end of the intermediate routine.

There have been many comments about the lack of instruction, counting, and breathing cues. I believe there is plenty of instruction by the narrator, and if the move feels smooth and in control, it's good enough for me. Counting is no big deal either since the reps and sets are marked on the screen, and you shouldn't be thinking so hard about counting anyway. Finally, breathing should come naturally in the movement and narrator provides plenty of cues. With some practice, you'll be able to discover your own smooth breathing rhythm for the workout. The intermediate workout is only a little more than 10 minutes, so you can fit it in easily during a free time slot during the day (for me, in the morning before work) while maintaining your normal exercise schedule.

After practicing the intermediate workout daily for a few weeks, you'll likely be able to start studying and practicing the advanced workout, which is the true value of the dvd. It's a nice, challenging routine which is a little more than 20 minutes. The workout moves smoothly through each exercise with great transitions. While some moves are very difficult at first, some practice and also modification based on previous levels will let you flow through the workout. I find the large jumps in difficulty between the levels motivational: the difficulty challenges the user to practice and improve, and keeps the dvd from becoming boring.

While the dvd lacks pastel colors, it's great as an instructional dvd to guide the user to eventually become independent in performing their pilates workout. As a final note, pass on the Winsor for sure. A friend had the Winsor 3 dvd workout set and I tried the 50 minute accelerated body sculpting workout. It's somewhat similar to the advanced workout offered in classical pilates dvd, but the workout is so slow and the breaks between exercises are very long. It's a little difficult not to daydream, nap, or even catch a cold between exercises in the Winsor workout. I'm exaggerating a bit, but it truly feels like you perform an exercise for 3 minutes, and listen to Winsor talk for three minutes...until you reach 50 minutes. Since focus is so important in pilates, I don't understand how one can do the Winsor series. Pick Classical Pilates Technique over Winsor any day. I can't judge other pilates dvd's since I haven't tried them, but I'm this dvd is probably your best bet.

  • Classical Pilates is the best!
    By on 2002-06-22
This video is wonderful in its display, and description of, the complete Pilates mat workout series. Without reservation, this video is for everyone, from people who are starting the Pilates method for the first time to certified instructors. The performers' technique is clear, strong, and without a doubt, aesthetically beautiful. It seems that all Classical Pilates technique films exhibit the most rigorous standards of excelllence in the manner that Joseph H. Pilates originally intended. The presence of master instructor Bob Liekens and commentator Alycea Ungaro place this video above all other Pilates videos; they articulate meaningful aspectes of the Pilates method with incisiveness, authority, and fierce perceptiveness, all with warmth and friendliness that is very enjoyable. I recommend this Classical Pilates video to everyone because the production quality is of the highest caliber, and because you can be confident that you are enjoying the heart and soul of the Pilates method while having a fun workout!

  • Pilates as Joseph Pilates intended- YAY!!!!
    By on 2003-06-26
I wish I'd found this before I wasted my money on all the popular, watered- down, mass marketed stuff. Even the teachers who KNOW better (like Jennifer Kries, among others) have fallen into that trap.No one who has a clue needs any other Pilates tape or DVD than this one.

As a dancer and fitness instructor, I'm fed up with our hard-won disciplines being hijacked and mutated for people who want the easy way out. Everyone promises the "body of a dancer" from a 30 minute workout. Guess what? You can get the body of a dancer ONLY by dedicating years of your life to dance training, AND doing Pilates as a maintenance and tune-up tool. If you want Pilates Lite or For Dummies, save your money and STAY AWAY from this one!

If, on the other hand, you are an active or retired professional or serious dancer, or just someone who is willing to work VERY hard and knows that there are no quick fixes in life, BUY THIS DVD TODAY. You won't regret it. It's the real thing.

  • Outstanding!!!
    By A1FJDHK0K2CSGP on 2002-11-27
I have been doing Pilates for 2 years and seemed to reach a plateau. I bought a reformer and did mat work as well, but stopped getting results. I bought the Classical reformer DVD as well as the Classical mat DVD and the results in just a couple weeks have been exponential! It really is the only DVD you will ever need. It includes everything from beginning to super advanced. Although for most the super advanced seems to be for entertainment purposes only. Those exercises are for those who are into fitness for a living like dancers, gymnasts and the like. But it gives you a goal and a example on the potential of the Pilates workout. All the exercises are well explained and well demonstrated. If you are a beginner or have been doing it a long time, you will benefit from this DVD greatly! The production is low budget, but you get a nuclear bang for your buck. No gloss, no unecessary frills, just Pilates in it's original intended form. There are no contemporaries to this series.

  • Incredible Workout
    By ABMJLZ9U16ODS on 2004-11-14
I am typically very impatient with workout videos, yet don't like to leave my home every single day in order to keep in shape; this DVD pretty much solved my problem. After just 20 minutes I feel like I've completed an entire gym workout. The instruction is very clear and easy to follow. The most valuable aspect of this DVD is the attention given to posture, process and breath. This way the workout is truly maximized because you know you're doing it right. Also, there is no obnoxious music interfering with the voice-over instruction, and all the exercises are expertly and clearly demonstrated. I was especially shocked by the way it has helped my posture. I used to work in a coffee shop, standing for 8 hour shifts. My back would ache relentlessly by the end of my day, and one 20 minute Pilates session really helped undo the muscle aches I had developed.

  • Here's The Situation
    By A1UPQOGK1L700 on 2003-02-21
Here's the situation: I bought a few Pilates videos before I found Classical Pilates. Each video before Classical Pilates was disappointing because I did NOT get a good workout. The other instructional videos were so SLOW and the people TALKED TOO MUCH. I became frustrated because I love movement and enjoy a time-efficient intelligent exercise program. At the end of my workouts with Classical Pilates I had fantastic energy!

It seems there are so many watered-down and knock-off versions of the Pilates method, that as a consumer, it's hard to know how to find the real thing. Well, Classical Pilates is true north far as I'm concerned, and now I am happy.

In a way I don't like to think like this, but maybe Pilates practitioners should be regulated by state governments (just like any other profession) to protect the public interest. Because now, who knows what you're getting when you buy an instructional video or go take a lesson with someone who has limited training.

    That's the situation.

  • Not for Beginners Who Want to Exercise Along With the DVD
    By A3S8QB0BYV8B2E on 2004-09-01
I was really excited about this DVD, because it earned a communication award, and I thought that meant that it would explain each exercise in detail. But it doesn't AT ALL. It seemed more like a DVD for teachers of pilates, rather than students.

I don't even think this DVD is designed to use while you are actually doing the exercises. It shows each exercise once or twice, but there is very little instruction, and they use words like "powerhouse" without explaining what that is, or reminding you what it should feel like. AND they go really fast.

I don't recommend this to anyone who is a beginner or who hasn't had one-on-one instruction. I've used other instructional DVDs that have been much more helpful.

  • Substance Over Flash
    By AMO8MJD40GWWK on 2003-05-02
I bought this DVD because of the reviews on Amazon. Part of me hesitated because a couple of people said the lighting or sound could have been better. But most people seemed to really appreciate this product. Since I am a Pilates enthusiast, I have purchased many Pilates DVDs.

This DVD has the most substance of any other Pilates video. Yes, the production could be slicker, but I want to see the best demonstration of the Pilates method that is available. None of the high financed DVDs that I've purchased have the dedication and soul this one does. And no other Pilates video presents the complete range of workouts the way this one does.

Another reason I hesitated to buy this DVD was because it does not feature a fitness star. I guess designer names give us some kind of security and status. Classical Pilates is unknown, and they don't have a celebrity to give their work media power. Yet I've learned one very important distinction: celebrities who produce eye-candy Pilates videos are NOT Pilates professionals. Fitness celebrities probably take some Pilates lessons in order to make their video, yet these people do not study the method to become instructors. When a fitness celebrity makes a Pilates DVD, their concern is ROI, not dedication to the Pilates method.

After doing some research on the participants of this DVD, I found out the Classical Pilates group is comprised of real professionals in the Pilates profession. Alycea Ungaro, for example is the author of the best selling "Pilates Body in Motion," and she runs the most successful Pilates studio in NYC. Her books are simply the best on the market. Bob Liekens is one of today's most respected instructors in the professional Pilates world. He is an internationally recognized authority on the subject, and is well-known for being extraordinarily gifted. The models who demonstrate the method are fiercely accomplished: they are experts in the Pilates method. When they show the exercises, you are watching professionals who know how to demonstrate and teach the Pilates method.

If Classical Pilates does not please every technofile, so be it. I prefer substance over flash any day.

  • Excellent Demonstration, Shabby Narration
    By AJ97FT1YCRO3S on 2003-01-07
I bought this DVD based on the raving 5-star reviews listed here... I watched the DVD first, prior to start the workout with this DVD. It has excellent introduction to the concept of the genuine Pilates exercise and the importance of 'controlled movement' and 'breathing', which this DVD promises to teach. As the workout begins ((starting at the basic level of course)), the model demonstrates the movement along with instruction narrated by someone else. Well, I was disappointed to find out that the 'instruction' wasn't really teaching but it was more like 'commentary' -as you would hear in ESPN sports news. There is no coaching in breathing either -such as inhale as your leg goes up, exhale coming down, etc...

I would recommend this to folks who are already familiar with Pilates workout, but not for absolute beginners...

  • A 10 Star Video!
    By A1JT6J6CDGGTOZ on 2003-01-03
I have been working out in the Pilates method for several years and take private lessons only once in a while. I live far from certified instructors who have extensive training, so I have to rely on mat classes and video instruction. When I heard about this Classical Pilates video, the recommendation seemed too good to be true, but I bought it anyway. This video is so pleasurable to watch because the demonstrators are precise, focused, dynamic, and fluid. This video is also thorough enough to be considered as a 'visual encyclopedia.' I have never seen another video that exhibits every level! Other Pilates videos charge about the same price, however, they only supply a single workout. The point is that I can grow with this video, and learn from Bob Liekens' insightful instruction, as if I were taking lessons in a New York City studio. Another thing I'm very satisfied with is that I actually get a workout! Many other videos show so many flashy camera angles, and explain the movements in so much detail, that I don't sweat. Classical Pilates claims to preserve the original Pilates method in their video. Since I do not know very much about the Pilates method, I can't adequately comment on this. But I have heard that Joseph Pilates was a tough guy and all around athlete who put his clients "through their paces," and he would encourage people to workout intelligently with robust energy. From watching other students and instructors practice the Pilates method, I can see that Classical Pilates technique is flawless, so I am inclined to believe that Classical Pilates keeps the true flame of Joseph Pilates' tradition burning brightly for the rest of us. I am very impressed

  • Authoritative, but not so practical
    By ARNWCLQZFQECA on 2003-04-15
This DVD shows what are probably the best examples of Pilates done right. The soloists are amazingly skilled, and they execute the exercises with amazing style and grace. Watching them is like watching champion figure skating. As they exercise, a Pilates expert comments on what they are doing.

The problem is, they do it so fast! This is, of course, the right way to DO pilates once you've learned it, but perhaps not the best way to teach it. The commentator doesn't have enough time to explain how do do what is being done.

If you are great at observing bodily action and emulating it, this DVD is for you. But if you want someone to talk you through your workout, this DVD fails. It is impecable REFERENCE material, but it is no tutorial, and it fails as a coach because the commentator doesn't do any counting for you to assist you with the timing if you aren't staring at the TV set.

Starting Pilates? Get Pilates Workout For Dummies. It's great!

I wrote a review last year and just wanted to follow up because this DVD has helped me a great deal. I'm just a beginner.

  • Need equipment for this DVD
    By A3SL07KNN0A6MN on 2006-07-24
I am disappointed that the DVD assumes that you own a Reformer or other 8' padded mat with a foot strap. The product description did not say this, nor does it say that the exercises can be done without equiopment. This makes me lose confidence in the DVD.

  • The only Pilates tape I need...
    By on 2002-06-30
This is by far the best Pilates technique video on the market, and I have purchased several over the past year. Bob Lieken's instruction is pure gold, and the comments provided by Alycea Ungaro offer great insight into the method. The performances by Peter Fiasca, Junghee Kallander and Jamie Trout clearly illustrate the proper way to do Pilates. All of the exercises are shown from several different angles, and I can easily workout along with the tape. And with all of the levels on one tape, it is the only Pilates tape I need.

  • Pilates the Real Way
    By A2CEWFU8W01G62 on 2004-10-01
As a certified instructor I'm skeptical about students being able to learn from videos. In fact I think everyone should study Pilates regularly with a well-trained teacher. Unfortunately this is not the reality. So there are videos galore to choose from. How many of the people who buy videos actually take a lesson?

On top of this, I see some very negative reviews that are clearly written by competing instructors from competing Pilates traditions. Welcome to the real world.

Videos should only be used in addition to studying regularly with a good instructor. My training was on the East Coast with traditional Pilates. I've seen various styles of Pilates but I never stray from the way Joseph Pilates taught his students.

This video is not perfect. In my view, though, this video illuminates the integrity, the flow, and the strength of Joseph Pilates' method like no other.

  • It's The Real Thing
    By A6NZXNHNOURLY on 2004-10-31
This DVD is the real thing. It's the only video that shows the complete and historically accurate workouts of Joseph Pilates. After being taught Pilates on the West Coast and in England, I was happy to find this DVD because it's made by people who studied and worked where Joseph Pilates had his studio: New York City. Go to the source. After finding this DVD, I started taking lessons from a teacher who taught authentic Pilates because it's more real, it's more difficult, and it's more attractive to watch. The Pilates method is definitely challenging, and I'm glad this no-hype no-frills video helps carry me forward to make progress every day. Other DVDs left my behind flabbly and my abdominals half-way strong. This video helps get me toned and as fit as a fiddle. It compliments my Pilates lessons very well.

  • Real Pilates Is Not For Everyone
    By A1UPQOGK1L700 on 2003-02-23
I've read the reviews of this Pilates video, and decided to buy it. Most people totally raved about how great this Classical Pilates DVD is, yet a few people thought it was too fast. This contrast fueled my interest. After seeing this wonderful DVD which, yes, does demonstrate the Pilates method with energy and vitality, I can only conclude that REAL PILATES IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. This DVD shows each workout in what the producer calls "real time," which means the model does not stop or slow down during exercise routine. This is great! Why would I want to watch an exercise video if I can't get a workout? And why would I want a video that shows just one level of workout for the same price? Classical Pilates provides all levels. I love that!

The exercise portion of the video is about 60 minutes and is an exemplary demonstration of REAL PILATES. Then, at the end, there is an informative discussion about the Pilates method. This video is comprised of several levels: Modified Basic, Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, with several super advanced exercises. The intermediate workout is about 15 minutes, and the advanced workout is about 20 minutes in duration. Although this DVD is very challenging, and something you can certainly make progress with, it also includes pre-basic exercises for those who are beginning the method.

For the people who want REAL PILATES where you can get a REAL WORKOUT, I recommend this DVD wholeheartedly. For the people who don't want these things, what can I say? You are missing something really, really important, and you should take a Pilates lesson to help you gain more understanding of the method.

  • Classical Pilates is Great for Teachers and OK for Students
    By on 2002-08-15
This DVD is a great resource for Pilates teachers who want to refresh their memories on the precise movements of each classic exercise. However, I don't agree that it is for everyone. The Intermediate thru Super Advanced workouts are far to rapid for someone just learning. In fact one of the points that are made by the narrator is that Joseph Pilates tried to get away from Rapid and Repeated Movements. (While demonstrating the 100, the demonstrators looked like humming birds!) In every other Pilates video, DVD, or mat class I have seen these exercises are done precisely but slowly.

If you're a new student and unfamiliar with Pilates I would recommend "Pilates for Dummies". It has two levels, beginner and intermediate, and there is clear instruction and slower movement than on this DVD.

Once again, this is a great resource for Pilates teachers or experienced students.

  • Important Contribution to the Pilates Profession
    By AMO8MJD40GWWK on 2003-05-04
This DVD contains the most complete set of workouts of the Pilates method of any DVD on the market. The range goes from pre-basic, to basic, then on to intermediate, advanced, and many super advanced exercises.

This video demonstrates classical Pilates in its best form, and the master instructor guides you with very important verbal instruction. This DVD seems to be a documentary of the way Pilates should ultimately be practiced, as well as an instructional video.

These people are sincere: the workouts demand intelligence and fortitude. The producers do not try to entice you with bathing suit babes who talk about weight loss, or with eye-candy graphics. This DVD is for people who want the traditional Pilates method, the classical workouts, and the best physical benefits you can get from any Pilates video on the market.
