I was very excited to get this card adapter so I could stop using my external USB device to down load photos. I popped it in and inserted my 4GB card which wasn't nearly full, and it told me the estimated time to finish was 25 minutes!!! I couldn't ever remember it taking that long, so I cancelled the transfer after watching it for about 5 minutes or so just to make sure it wasn't going to speed up or equalize or something. I put the same card in my usual USB card reader and it started the transfer (of all photos, not just the remaining ones), and it took 7 minutes to complete. I don't think that USB 2.0 is slower than PCMCIA bus, because you can get a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card adaptor! I can't figure out why a simple device would cause the transfer to take so long. It wasn't really worth the effort to return the opened $12 item and get charged a restocking fee, so I still have it, but I only use my USB card reader. Maybe it would work better as a coaster for drinks or something!

  • Awesome!

This product is exactly what I was looking for! It is the perfect solution to not carrying around your annoying USB card reader. This shipped in a couple of days, plugged it in to my Dell 600M laptop, and it works beautifully! And with a name like SanDisk, you know you are getting a quality product! Don't think twice, BUY IT NOW!

Oh, and to those wondering if, when plugged in, it is flush with the side of your laptop (as I was wondering)...IT IS! Even when you have a CF card in, it is still flush with the side of your laptop. It does NOT pertrude one bit, unlike WiFi cards!

  • Nice !!!!!!

Good quality product. Works faster than any reader. Readers are painful to carry, plug etc.

This is a quite a solution. If you can afford another memory other than the one in your dig cam, this can act as your backup hardrive for important files. that;s how useful this is !!!!

  • A better solution

    By ATMXJ2JPOVUD4 on 2005-08-09
Especially good for laptop users. Faster, smaller, and CHEAPER than most USB solutions. I lost my USB reader about a month after buying this. I didn't even care to go look for it. Works great with my Apple Powerbooks.

[update: this product is old technology now. faster products are available]

  • ScanDisk Compact Flash Card adapter

    By A18GLEFJMOAWQQ on 2006-02-02
It sure is easier than the external USB card reader I was using before. Easier to carry, no "moving" parts, and it seems to read CF cards faster than my USB reader.

  • Slower than USB 2.0 reader
    By AZPEN64PTBL74 on 2007-06-12
I bought this adapter so that I would not have to carry a separate USB 2.0 reader along with my laptop on photography trips. The adapter sits flush with the edge of my laptop, so could be left in the slot without anything sticking out. Most newer laptops (including mine) feature built-in card readers, but none read CompactFlash cards, which is still the favored format of DSLRs.

Problem is, this PCMCIA/CardBus adapter is much, much slower than my SanDisk SDDR-88-A15 8-in-1 USB 2.0 Hi-speed Reader. When transferring images, this adapter consumes so much processor power that my laptop becomes unresponsive. Image transfer also eats up battery power. I have stopped using this adapter.

For photographers on the move, I would suggest something like the WOLVERINE DATA FlashPac 7-in-1 Memory Card Reader and 60 GB Storage Device, instead of lugging around a laptop and card-reader everywhere. There are other, fancier options out there with good screens that let you review your pictures (the Epson P-3000 and its siblings come to mind), but if all you want is an HDD to empty your flash cards onto, it is hard to beat the FlashPac's value.

    To sum up:
    PROS
    * Adapter sits flush with my laptop, doesn't have to be carried separately.

    CONS
    * Super-slow. Feels about 5 times slower than my USB 2.0 card reader from the same company.
    * Maxes out my laptop's processor (and it's a fast laptop) when transferring files.
    * Eats up laptop's batteries like crazy.
    * Source of constant frustration.

  • Slow, affects entire system
    By A2VEMQCXC0HB1L on 2006-04-02
Note: I am fully aware that compact flash cards have a maximum sustained upload speed which caps off the potential speed of the medium it is being transferred on.

I purchased this product to use in conjunction with my SanDisk Ultra II compact flash cards. I thought that PC cards would be faster than USB 1.1 and 2.0, but thats not the truth.

Whenever I try to upload files from my CF cards thru the PC card, it slows down the ENTIRE system. I can't do other tasks while the card is uploading files since everything is acting sparatic and slow.

I'll admit, the card is a bit faster in uploading files than USB 1.1, but I can't do anything else on my computer while the card is working. Honestly, I would rather have a little bit slower performance with my USB 1.1 card reader and be able to work on my computer at the same time instead of having the card slow down my entire system.

I believe this card is a 16-bit pcmcia card. I've heard good praise for Lexar's 32-bit pcmcia cards, but I have yet to try it out. I'm sure it costs more money than this PC card or a USB card reader, though...

All in all, I suggest getting a USB 2.0 compact flash reader over this product if you want to work on your computer at the same time as you are uploading files.

Otherwise, if your the kinda person who doesnt mind leaving the computer alone while the files are uploaded to your computer, this will work just fine for you.

  • Adds Memory to Embroidery Machine
    By A3DOZ9XDTUYQSU on 2005-12-05
My Janome Memory Craft 300E Embroidery Machine needed a Compact Flash Card Adapter to use in the machine's card slot. The manufacturer recommended a Sandisk Adapter for use with the Sandisk FlashCard. The first place I look for needed items is Amazon. Found what I needed - the price was right & the service was fast. Thanks!

  • It works, but it is SUPER SLOW!
    By A1COOHEQZRMT3X on 2006-08-20
I bought this reader for my laptop since it didn't have USB 2.0.
But to tell you the truth, I think this device is a little slower than USB 1.0! I am going to buy the Lexar 32Bit card and see if that improves the download speed, because this reader is so slow.
It took me about 45min to download 2GB of photos from my Extreme III card. That is unacceptable.

  • Good product, I'm sure, but won't work in the PC Card slot on a 06 Honda Civic
    By A3N0UA66E6MCNH on 2007-12-05
I bought this item hoping that it would work in the PC Card slot in my Civic, but when I popped it in and pressed the Card tab, it would not read from the device. I checked the card reader and media both in a laptop prior to using it in my car, so I knew that the media and adapter both work. I believe that Honda uses a Type I card slot instead of a Type II card (this adapter is Type II).

So, if you are thinking of getting this for your car, you'd be better served getting the SanDisk SDAD-38-A10 CF to PC Card Adapter, which is specifically mentioned in comments as working w/Honda. Now I am just hoping that the new card that I bought will be able to address a 16GB CF card!

  • Hey, it works!
    By AZN88CCKEQN0 on 2006-11-04
After running my camera's battery down transferring 1G of photos into my 3 year-old HP notebook with USB 1.1, it is refreshing to be able to do the same task in a few minutes and still have plenty of juice left in my camera battery (and notebook battery, too).

  • Good Product, could be better
    By A2NNTE5PCLO73L on 2006-11-06
The card works great and I have used it a lot for consolidating photos from memory cards. I store the adapter right in the machine. The only issue, which is not a big one, is that one cannot remove the CF card without removing the adapter each time the card is changed. It would be much more convienent if the card could be slipped in and out without removing the adapter.

Other than that, it works very well and beats carrying a USB reader separate.

  • Works great!
    By A372X6M5UIWHJK on 2007-02-13
HP laptop, SanDisk CompactFlash media for my camera, and now this card reader. Worked the first time I inserted it, and every time since. This card fits fully into the slot, so you don't have to worry about bending or breaking it. You do have to eject it to get the CompactFlash out of the reader though. Good buy.

  • ultra S_L_O_W compact flash card reader
    By A33425DJUY4ZET on 2008-04-10
I bought this card reader to use with my laptop so I wouldn't have a USB reader hang off the side, just waiting to get broken off. To my disappointment, this reader is incredibly slow. Slow enough to make it not worth the money, no matter how little it costs.

Here's some specs on my analysis:
    * Test was performed with a Dell Latitude D630 w/ Intel Core2Duo Laptop
    * Memory card used was a Sandisk Extreme III 8GB Compact Flash
    * Transfer of thirty-six (36) 10.2 megapixel images (~4MB each), total size of ~160MB

** From D630 to Extreme III CF card via PCMCIA, the transfer took approx 5 minutes
** From Extreme III CF card to D630 via PCMCIA, the transfer took approx 4 minutes

** From D630 to Extreme III CF card via generic USB 2.0 reader, the transfer took approx 20 seconds
** From Extreme III CF card to D630 via generic USB 2.0 reader, the transfer took approx 20 seconds

Just consider, this was only 36 photos (~160MB total). If I travel with my laptop and take hundred or thousands of photos and needs to backup or download them, I would most definitely need to bring my power supply. And when you travel, bringing more stuff to weigh you down is the last thing you want to do.

So, with results like these, its clear why I'm in the process of returning this item. I hope you all think twice before ordering this reader.

  • Warning: 16-bit adapter cards are OLD TECHNOLOGY! Stick with 32-bit
    By AGH8IXZSHXEZS on 2008-04-26
I don't know why these types of cards are still on the market--they are old, slow, and obsolete. Instead, search for 32-bit Cardbus adapters such as the ones made by Viking, Delkin, or Lexar, which are many times faster but not much more expensive. And, they fit in the same PC card slot on most laptops made in the last decade. The 32-bit cards I have used are even a bit faster than USB 2.0 and Firewire.

You can spot 32-bit cards by the gold strip at the top of the card. No gold strip? Then prepare to wait an hour or more for your data to transfer, while your laptop is brought to its knees. The old silver cards may be fine for storing and playing mp3s, or may be needed for laptops made more than 10 years ago, but any large amount of data--such as GBs of photos or video-- will take quite a while to copy over. Why would you want a reader that is SLOWER than your flash media?

  • Ultra Slow Compact Flash PCMCIA adapter
    By A3L5SJQ7VU3FQN on 2008-07-14
Transfer rates were around 1Mb per second - too slow for good video playback. I don't understand why SanDisk would offer a slow 16 bit PCMCIA (Type I) card that you could never take advantage of Ultra or Extreme compact flash memory? If you want to transfer large files to or from compact flash memory, purchase the 32 bit PCMCIA (Type II) adapter made by Viking InterWorks. With the Viking adapter, a 6 GB of iTunes folder was moved in about 5 minutes (~20Mb/sec)) to a 16Gb Extreme III compact flash card.

  • Great site!

I am very pleased with my purchase. The product was of a great quality and the delivery time was good.

  • Good Choice
    By A1FUOMKS9LQ8QE on 2006-03-17
This product functions as it should. This is a fine choice for an inexpensive product. There are more expensive card readers avalible, but I know of no advantage they may have over this one.

  • Works
    By A2XOL8PQBN6SFT on 2007-01-03
It works with no issues on 5 different PCMCIA/Cardbus slots I've tried in combination with at least 8 different CF cards from various manufacturers. I also have the non-Ultra blue/red version of this adaptor, and I couldn't tell any difference between the two other than the label and part number (hence on 4 stars due to the higher cost of this Ultra version).

  • Slow but works on Solaris
    By A2CSPO06UVET3E on 2007-09-07
Yes, this CF reader is a bit slow and hogs CPU but it saved me from buying another 1GB CF card when I was on vacation and ran out of space. It works on (Open)Solaris just fine - plug it into the PC card slot and a window will pop up showing all the photos stored on the card inserted into the reader.

    By AY2DU2L78C4Z4 on 2007-12-11
Very happy, compact, works very well. In the past I used to purchase the external drives that connected to my laptop via usb cable, these are much more compact and work just as good.

  • This card reader makes computers unusable!
    By A26PZS1NSST33I on 2008-02-15
I have tried this card reader with two different computers and it made both of them unusable during the transfer time. In addition, it took an hour an a half to trasfer 4 GB of data. There is nothing wrong with the CF cards, because I've used a different cards readers and it transfered just fine!

  • Great to have for those DSLR cards
    By AD22FWT1UA0XS on 2008-02-18
This product is a great addition to a laptop that does not have a compact flash card slot. It fits snug into a standard PCMCIA slot, and is also compatible with the Windows Vista O/S (packaging does not say it, but it uses a plug-n-play driver). Fast transfer rates, and extremely portable if you want to take it out of the laptop for storing. It does not stick out of the side of the slot, so you can even leave it in the side of the laptop, but you do have to eject it everytime in order to remove the compact flash card from it. Does not support MicroDrives!!!

  • You can't imagine how slow it is, but it's still the choice...
    By A1M85TID9571OZ on 2008-02-20
I did not even try copying a bulky file but edited a Word document stored on it instead. I immediately figured out that it takes 3 seconds to save a .doc file of size 41kb...what the hell???!!!

But after searching the technical documents I realized that PCMCIA interface offers transfer rate up to 66Mbit/s contrary to USB2.0 which offers 480MBit/s. So here is the difference, and there is nothing better to do.

The bad part is that the new Express Card interface, which is as fast as USB2.0, didn't yet give birth to any CF solution as good as this one physically. They are either unable to support CF, or have to leave 2/3 of the card body out of the adapter (that means out of your laptop), which may lead to physical damage to the memory when shock or impact happens.

That's why I still rated it as 4-star. We have no other choice. If you don't have to use CF, go to Express Card adapters with other types of memories like SD, PLEASE!!!

  • Works well with Vista

I use Windows Vista - Home Premium, and this has worked fine with my 512 MB Compact Flash card.

  • Works great in my wife's Honda !!
    By A1WMHFPD9YLVFV on 2008-03-06
My wife's Honda CR-V SUV has a PCMCIA slot for memory behind the flip-out GPS navigation screen. The memory is used to store and play MP3 music files so I ripped a few hundred songs onto a spare 2GB CF card that I had lying around. My wife is now able to call up her favorite MP3 tunes via the GPS touch screen, voice commands, or steering wheel controls.

The SanDisk SDDR-64-768 Compact Flash to PC Card Adapter works great in this application so I plan to get a much larger Compact Flash card for her in the near future. I know that her car MP3 player will support at least 8GB so we'll try that next.

  • Works well in my 2008 CR-V EX-L with Nav
    By A1ZIB1V7MHGOB on 2008-03-30
I bought this to use with my Honda CR-V's PC Card slot. It worked like a charm with a Sandisk 4 GB Compact Flash card. No Complaints here.
