Best Egg Cooker on the Market as of 2005 By A1PKFRC06WA7TN on 2005-12-18
What a delight it is to know that I can have hardboiled or poached eggs any time I want, with almost no effort, and no supervision. You can put your eggs in the machine when you wake up, go upstairs to shower, and never worry about it, because the machine shuts off by itself when it's done. Hardboiled eggs are done perfectly every time. Moreover, if you want to have hardboiled eggs without the bother of taking off the shell, you can just put four eggs into the poaching tray and fill to the hardboil mark.
The eggs will come out a funny shape, but unless we're making devilled eggs, we don't care.
There's only one disadvantage to this machine, and that is that you can't just dump the whole thing into the dishwasher. Sulfer tends to be released from the eggs and stick on the machine and you have to wipe that off regularly by hand. It can get a little dirty. But that's the worst thing I can say about this machine.
Simply put, this makes our lives easier for a very modest price. I never thought I needed an egg cooker before, but now that I have one, I'll never go back.
Oster Egg Cooker By A2MB5XC5QP3WBW on 2003-10-11
We received an Oster egg cooker as a wedding gift many years ago and used it frequently, especially for poached eggs. When the Teflon wore out, we were unable to find this product on the market. We tried other egg cookers/poachers which were adequate, but we always wanted another Oster. When we found that amazon.com was offering this product, we ordered it. I boils up to 8 eggs and poaches up to 4 eggs. This is a wonderful little appliance that is easy to operate and is easy to clean.
Perfect eggs everytime By A2U0XKMG8H9MZD on 2004-03-23
This is a very easy to use and functional machine. Whether you want soft/hard "boiled eggs" or poached the egg cooker does the job.Pros: Small size Great eggs Easy to use Quick Cons: Parts and unit are not dishwasher safe No finish bell (but the click the button makes is fairly loud) Poached egg tray has to be coated with butter/oil/Pam with every use-should have been teflon coated
Awesome Product! By A3ACGLFEQ3ARQ6 on 2005-08-31
So many people don't know what they're missing! This is a FABULOUS product! I had a Sunbeam egg cooker for over 20 years, which finally died. I searched high and low for the exact same cooker and this product was the closest, well actually the same product but with improvement. I really like the automatic shut off feature. This was very important to me, as I'm not one to stand around to watch eggs cook! I like the see-through lid. If you want to watch, you can tell if the poached eggs are almost done or not. And let me tell you about the poached eggs this cooker makes - YUM! Cooks them perfectly! IF I wanted the poached egg yolks real runny, I could add less water and IF I wanted the poached eggs cooked with totally solid yolk, I could add more water slightly over the fill level. The water fill levels are easy - no measuring cups needed. The only feature I miss is being able to unplug the cord from the unit to store inside, but, oh well!
Again, I love this unit! I even travel with it. I highly recommend it.
Great Egg Poacher. By A3I99C05Y6LIW9 on 2006-11-20
This is one of the few speciality cookers that I actually use on a regular basis. It is easy to use, put the eggs in the correct tray, add the appropriate amount of water, and push the red button. It turns itself off when finished. No more guessing as to when to start the timer.
If you like poached eggs, it is a must. It makes great poached eggs. Minor changes in the amount of water in a bottom of the cooker controls the hardness of the poaching. So after a couple of tests, you will figure out exactly the amount of water to add to get them just right.
This is my second Oster egg cooker. My first one died after many years of good service. I looked at the other egg cookers and they only cook 2-3 poached eggs at a time. The Oster cooker hold 4 eggs in the poaching tray. Since it holds 4 eggs at a time, the egg compartments in the poaching tray are too small to hold jumbo eggs. Since I never use jumbo eggs, this is not a problem for me.
The cooker is also really nice to make a hard boiled eggs. The hard boiled eggs are cooked to perfection. However, it only cooks 7 at a time. For hard boiling a large number of eggs, as needed when dying Easter eggs, a large pot is easier and quicker.
- Wonderful, And Then Combustible
     By A1FXB62W7VMDSW on 2007-12-29
This egg cooker was a true delight for several months, and was used about every other week. It was highly efficient, made eggs perfectly, and was reasonably easy to clean. Its use was as recommended by the manual.
Then, two days ago the house filled with the stench of melting plastic. When it was traced back to the egg cooker, it appeared switched off but was in fact burning into overdrive. The plastic canopy had melted like Dali's clocks, and begun to sag over some hard boiled eggs left from the night before. I unplugged the cooker, and discovered that the canopy had melted into the base and was fastened tight.
Not only was it completely ruined, but if this had happened when no one was at home, it might have even burned down the house!
In spite of all of this device's very positive qualities, this is clearly a fatal flaw and cannot be recommended. Oster should recall this model and overhaul the design for safety purposes.
- Eggsactly What We Needed.
     By AR3HV5WH2I4B2 on 2005-12-16
I may be biased towards the Sunbeam/Oster name, mostly because I have a family history with the company going back decades.
I am not a fan of eggs per se. However, the wife and kids are big fans of eggs. As a matter of fact they would eat eggs with every meal if they could.
The problem we faced was that since I don't ever eat eggs, I don't know a thing about cooking them. And my wife is a self admitted 'Non-Cook' when it comes to just about ANYTHING!
We began the test run of our new Oster 4716 Egg Cooker with the Hard Boiled eggs.
With the easy to follow instructions, not only in the booklet, but actually ON the product too, it was a snap!
According to the Mrs. the eggs came out to total perfection. Just soft enough in all the right areas...which I guess is the whole thing.
With the soft boiled eggs, there was again perfection. My wife hadn't eaten eggs cooked this way in quite some time, but enjoyed them none the less.
The poached eggs were the kids favorite! With a piece or two of toast, the kids called them the best 'dippy eggs ever!'
To top the whole experience off, the cook time was relatively short.
I don't remember the exact amount of time it took to cook each one, but the wonderful thing about this product is that it is all automatic! When the eggs were done cooking, the light in front went off, and the click at the perfect pitch let the household know their snack/breakfast was ready and waiting!
Another awesome thing that Oster does is put easy and delicious recipies in the instructions for some even better meals!
Needless to say, I'm highly reccomending this product. For the price, you honestly can't go wrong, especially when it makes your life a whole lot easier!
- Not As Good As The Original!
     By A2K1ZDDTRMYT6Q on 2006-01-10
Just rcvd my NEW Oster Egg Cooker and I am somewhat disappointed. My old 70's model (still working) cooks much better. I decided to purchase a new one just in case my old one gives up the ghost. The inside base is plastic, not metal. Could be the reason that the new one didn't cook as fast and didn't seem as hot. My old one was always dry after cooking...the new one left water in the base after poaching. Using the same amount of water, three tablespoons, the egg never finished cooking the yucky part of the white. I even left the cover on trying to finish the egg, but to no avail! After doing this with my old one the yolk would have been completely cooked! I will try adding more water next time and hope for the best. As the old adage states..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Are you listening, Oster? Metal is better!
- Oster 4716 Egg Cooker
     By A20O9DCGF6E0GQ on 2006-02-21
We are very pleased with the Oster egg cooker. We have had it for approximately one month. It took us a little while to get the proper water level to cook only two soft boiled eggs at a time. Now that we have, it is excellent. Cooking two poached eggs to perfection is very easy. Hard boiled eggs are a snap! We purchased this model because of the automatic shut-off which works just fine. We have found that using filtered water rather than tap water keeps the cooker base cleaner. However, regardless, it is easy to clean and we have used the cream of tartar which takes care of any residual minerals that build up. We would definitely purchase this egg cooker again as a gift for friends or relatives.
- Danger - Watch Your Cooker
     By A3VFK3PQF5D9YY on 2007-06-17
After several lovely experiences with this appliance it decided to fail to turn off when the water was gone/the eggs were done. I heard odd popping sounds which turned out to be the plastic lid melting into the base. I'm fortunate that I caught it before there was a fire or other major disaster.
Use caution, folks.
- eggs cooked perfect
     By AV2R0RKAM4RKK on 2004-08-20
I just got this egg cooker for the office. Yeah we used to get eggs free here at the office now they charge us. Anyway, we (the other ladies here in the office and I) decided on this brand because of the name and the other reviews we saw here.
So far we have used it every day for a week, once a day in the morning and it has cooked our eggs PERFECTLY. We have only done hard boiled eggs, not pouched or soft eggs. It sits on my desk and I watch when the light goes off and it clicks. I don't need any more bells and whistles to alert me.
One thing to be careful about is not to puncture the eggs twice...else it will leaks some yoke but still the eggs came out perfect the yoke thing was a first time trial mistake. Enjoy!!
p.s. i bought an oster blender too ....bout to put a review that now too. I think I love this name brand!
Lastly only 4 stars because I need to see how it works in a month or so, but so far I am pleased
- Oster Egg Cooker Machine
     By on 2003-02-14
The Oster Egg Cooker is a nice little machine that cooks your eggs just to the right way you want them. The lines in the dish tells you how much water to put in to cook it to either the soft boil, medium boil. or hard boil stage. It is also easy to clean up when you are done. I just wish I could get another one. Mine fell on the cement floor and broke. I guess I have to look at some other machinesnow.Bev from NY

Picked this one out of three. It was true to its' description. I would purchase another for someone else for a gift.
- Most fabulous invention
     By A2PEIERQZR3COP on 2007-08-12
If you're like me-- and get bored sitting around waiting for an egg to boil... walk away and have an egg thats cracked with white goo coming from the crack--- or pull out too soon and have an almost cooked yolk... This is PERFECT.
You can put in lots of eggs at once--- More than enough for 3 people. Great for salads, breakfast... etc. You decide how you like your eggs-- hard, or easy... Then you fill up the water line (using a glass, as the instructions say not to place under the faucet) that matches your goal. I like my eggs cooked very very well--- so the line inside the cooker (and the directions that I can now toss because the instructions will always be there) says to fill to the outside line. I did--- put in my eggs-- put the lid on-- pushed the button and did my own things until they were complete. They came out PERFECT.
I cleaned the yellow remains with a paper towel. I just wiped it off. I don't know if thats right-- but I figured the devise wasn't supposed to get wet from the faucet-- so I'd use the towel.
I did not try the sunny side up egg thing-- I think they're gross. But it seems that that accessory is easy to clean. You can probably stick it in the dish washer. It's resembles a small metal plate with four sections.
- egg cooker
     By A34H4510F2K5Q4 on 2007-03-08
This is the 5th Oster egg cooker I've had in the last 6 years. Both the poached and hard cooked eggs turn out perfectly every time. The problem is the "start" button. After about 9 months of use, the button won't stay depressed to turn on the cooker. This has happened with all 4 previous cookers. When I started buying the poacher, Oster was the only brand that offered what I wanted, but next time I am going to buy another brand to see if it lasts longer.
- Better quality than other brands
     By A157B9JK9X3HF5 on 2007-01-22
I'm not going to go into the benefit of having an item like this, it is very handy. I just want to say that this particular egg cooker is of much better quality than others. I had one that went out and went shopping. This isn't an item that many stores carry but the ones I found out there were made of very cheap plastic and held fewer eggs. I like that this model has water markings in the bottom and the egg piercer is built into the tray that holds the hard boiled eggs. Some models have a measuring cup to tell you how much water to put in and the piercer is on there. I just don't like dealing with an extra thing I have to keep track of.
- Doesn't Last!
     By A2EVGR5F2P9IBR on 2007-11-23
My family loves hard boiled eggs. Based on favorable reviews, I bought an Oster Egg Cooker in April 2007. It's my first egg cooker and we loved the perfect hard boiled eggs. It's very easy to use -- just fill the unit with water to the line, pierce the eggs (piercer is on the holder), place the eggs in the holder, put the lid on and press the start button. The Oster also cooks soft boiled and poached eggs but unfortunately never got around to trying other eggs as the unit malfunctioned and melted the cover after only 6 months! I followed the directions to the T and the automatic shut off should have averted any overheating. My entire house stunk with the smell of melted plastic. Extremely dissatisfied with the poor service life of this appliance (used approx 3 times per month - which means it malfunctioned after less than 20 uses!). I plan to buy another egg cooker, but it definitely won't be an Oster!
- It lasted about two months
     By A1QA3WGJYENM8R on 2007-12-04
I do not give 1-star reviews lightly. After reading the amazon reviews I decided to purchase this item, since my wife wanted to try a diet that included hard boiled eggs most every morning. We received our item on 9/26/07, and used it approximately 4-5 times per week. This morning, 12/4/07, I noticed an odd smell and some popping sounds, and sure enough, the lid had melted into the base. I'm not entirely sure what caused this to happen, but I'm a bit upset about the product lasting all of two months and my house smelling like burned plastic.
- DANGER Lid Melted. Location of ON push button BAD
     By A3B6WI5GF9KQ6S on 2008-01-04
The ON push button protrudes from the front of the egg cooker. When the house cleaning service cleaned my kitchen, they inadvertently rotated the egg cooker, pushed it against the wall, depressing the ON button and turning it on. As long as the button is pushed in, it will not turn off even though the cooking cycle is over. Several hours later a strong smell of burning plastic permeated the house. Fortunately I was home and found the source before a fire started. One could argue that the cooker should have been unplugged after use but that is not realistic. My view is that the ON button design and location is unacceptable. This design should never have been approved.
I researched for a new egg cooker and decided upon a Maverick EC100. It has a rocker switch that illuminates when on. The switch is well within the outer bounderies of the cooker and would be most difficult to accidently turn on. It turns off automatically and emits electronic beeps to signal the end of cooking. The beeping continues until the rocker switch is returned to the OFF position (the cooker is already off). This is a good design and the cooker performs well.
- Horrible, horrible, horrible design flaw
     By A33CLVW2K7SL1P on 2008-06-22
If the lid that accompanied this egg cooker was glass (as they used to be) or stainless steel, this might be a handy device. Unfortunately, the lid is plastic. And the lid is in constant contact with the part of the egg cooker that heats the water. The byproduct of this is that the lid will melt. I wish I had read the one-star reviews. They all say the same thing.
Given the design of this, I can't imagine how anyone's plastic lid didn't melt. Perhaps these reviews are combined for an Oster product that's no longer on the market? One with a glass lid?
Also, the instructions say that for cooking fewer than 8 eggs, more water may be necessary. But that's all. Cuisinart's egg cooker has a measuring beaker with exact marks showing how much water is necessary for how many eggs, and for what consistency: Hard, Medium, or Soft.
- Eggordinary Egg Cooker
     By A9E9C4EUYKOVD on 2006-09-26
I found this gadget to be quite suitable for my everyday needs. I would definitely recommend this cooker. I'm always overcooking my eggs, but with this cooker it's basically impossible to overcook your eggs. Note --make sure you have enough water in the cooker or the bottom will burn.
- egg cooker adventure
     By ANCE3PBR10BN6 on 2007-03-08
The egg cooker was great. 2 weeks later it died. Apparantly this is an old model and Oster has improved it. We now have a new egg cooker and hope it will last longer.
- Peel it from the shell or the tray, your pick.
     By A2YR30NS0UQ85J on 2007-03-10
I bought this item to make poached eggs for a quick breakfast. This way I don't have to take the time out to peel them, but cleaning the poacher tray cancels out that bit of saved time. The egg sticks to the tray much worse than it does to it's own shell even if you grease it first. Also, the tray sometimes gets stuck in the lid and it isn't easy to get it out. I like my eggs hard, but so far they haven't cooked all the way hard with the recommended amount of water. I will be using it more as I go along and may write another review after I get it fine tuned, but so far these are the issues that have come up.
- I love this thing!
     By AS8CK5HK7D3IO on 2007-05-14
I love it! Never knew there was such a thing. I make 1-2 dozen hard boiled eggs a week. I love that in less than 20 minutes I have hard boiled eggs and I don't have to watch the stove or anything, it shuts off automatically.
I use large eggs but you could use extra large if you put less in. I've never used the poached tray, but you could definitely use it to make egg muffins, they turn out exactly the right size.
It washes so easily as well. I would definitely buy another one and recommend it highly to anyone.
Nov2007, I've now had this several months and still love it! I've recently had the chance to use the poached tray and it turns out well. I actually make them, then slice them in half horizontally and put 2 halves on a bagel or english muffin with a piece of cheese. Great breakfast sandwhich!
- A "green" applicance available in only in white
     By A270BIKTU2RSEH on 2007-07-19
After reading the Amazon reviews, we bought the Oster egg coooker--primarily to use for poaching. The product is great. Two observations:
1. The poacher is nearly filled to the brim with extra-large eggs--which is fine, and if one is careful not to spill any eggwhite, cleanup takes seconds. The trick is not to let uncooked eggwhite spill onto the metal rack or the base.
2. (I don't think anyone mentioned this, yet) Over time the unit will easily pay for itself. It uses only 500 watts, and, then, only for a few minutes to boil a minuscule amount of water. A pot of water, brought to a boil on the stovetop, will consume 10 times the amount of energy. Can't comment on the cost of gas, but the cost of running an electric burner to boil a pot of water--before you even start cooking!--is not cheap.
- Major Design Flaw
     By A1KQ50DNLJQ0XD on 2008-04-04
Bought this unit in 11/07 because of the great reviews. Worked just perfectly, then in 1/08 came back after the eggs had cooked and found the plastic top had melted into the cooker. Had to get a screw driver to get the ruined eggs out. Called Customer service. They were great. Sent me another one and asked me to return the defective one. Got the new one and after about 4 weeks same thing happened. Plastic top melted into the base.
They are sending another out, but wow twice in a row.
- Disappointing Egg Cooker
     By A2ECBI0L2WMO2T on 2007-01-21
I ordered this product based on the reviews that were available at the time. I was sorely disappointed. There is no measuring cup, so all water amounts must be estimated (the unit has three "lines" to help, but nothing that denotes how much water to use if you wish to cook a specific number of eggs); there is no buzzer when the unit is finished, so unless you babysit it, everything ends up overcooking. This is a great unit to avoid purchasing unless you plan to always cook 8 eggs at a time and want them all hardboiled.
- Oster Egg Cooker
     By AI22UJL11ACPV on 2007-03-11
If you want perfect soft-boiled eggs, this is for you! I had an Oster Egg Cooker that finally bit the dust after 50 years of use. I immediately looked for another and this is pretty much like my old one with some improvements. It makes perfect poached eggs, too, and of course, hard boiled. I love it!
- Egg Cooker
     By A1YOAJZ1M1CJDV on 2007-03-11
Does a great job every time. Eggs come out perfectly. No more worry about under cooked or over cooked poached eggs. The egg holder is a little small so you either need to buy smaller eggs or don't put all the clear liquid in. I feel this is a minor issue, but other than that, it works great! I had this egg cooker several years ago. When it wore out, I bought a different make thinking all egg cookers where the same. They aren't. It was horrible. I don't know if the heating element was off, or the timer, but I could never figure it out and there was no consistancy with my eggs. So I trashed it and got another one of these Oster Egg Cookers. I am back to perfectly poached eggs every time. Easy clean up too.
- Would give 5 stars except for...
     By A2LVUE6IMM0QOD on 2007-04-02
if you're not listening very carefully in a rather quiet room the "click" to announce the egss are ready to come out is rather inaudible. A little beeper would be helpful
But, saying that we were extremely pleased with both soft boiled eggs and poached eggs. If you fill the poacher carefully so eggs don't slop over and you grease the cups cleanup is a breeze. Also be sure to invert the boiler tray when cooking poached eggs.
By the time the orange juice was poured and the toast made our eggs were perfectly done. Good job Oster.
