"The grill that saved camping" By A1GHW00NHS8PXG on 2002-10-02
We purchased this Road Trip after having a horrible experience with a grill from Cabelas. That grill had the lava rocks that moved every time you moved the grill and besides that the legs fell off. We were looking for something that would have fold under legs and no rocks. The Road Trip saved our camping days. We purchased a bag for it, keep it stored in the belly of the camper and with putting water in the tray below the burners, it is very very easy to clean up. You can place this on the picnic table to cook on or use the fold down legs. We have also discovered that this is the best way to cook grilled onions and potatoes or pork chops or chicken, etc on the griddle. Very very convenient and easy clean up. We both rate this a 5 stars. Great job, Coleman. Signed happy camper, Janet Becker
Use as full-time grill By A2AEZQ3DGBBLPR on 2003-03-10
This grill replaced our old gas grill at home. In four years I've went through 4 grills to rust that occurs naturally here, just by a metal object being outside. I wanted a solution to finally eliminate that problem. This fits the bill with the fold up capability, and the storage bag to keep it fresh. You're still cooking over an open flame with the grill plate. It comes with a griddle and a grill, each covering half of the cooking area, and I've obtained a 20-lb tank attachment, and an extra grill, for the big jobs. Try this feature out: the grill, griddle, and drip trays are washable in the dishwasher.... I can't say that about my old grills.
The perfect grill for the RV By A1CIU06M0GZNHA on 2006-06-14
This truly is the perfect grill for the RV. Before buying, I researched everything from the Weber Q (good, not perfect), to the Themos Grill2Go (not really a grill).
Before it came, I was thinking that my high expectations from all these glowing reviews would cause me to not like it as much, but it's even better than some of these reviews! It's very portable, and folds up to a small size. And cooking on it is very easy, as well as just as important, clean up. If you get one, I recommend you also order a second grill grate to replace the griddle sometimes. (It comes with 1 of each). Griddle is great for eggs, grilling onions, etc., but it's nice to have the maximum space to grill hamburgers and hotdogs for the parties.
Finally, this blue model is the best of the three Coleman Road Trip Grills, too. Even though there are some with additional letters, this one has heavier duty grates than the other two, and a better stand system (in my opinion).
Perfect grill for tailgating By A1KE82SOR2NXI9 on 2003-04-12
I bought the Coleman RoadTrip Grill last summer to replace my 20-year old portable CharBroil gas grill. I spent quite a bit of time researching both the Coleman grill and the CharBroil/Thermos Grill2Go. I chose the Coleman because of it's versatility. I purchased the optional carrying case, stove grate, and additional grill section to go along with the grill section and griddle section that came with the unit. It's easy to light and stays lit on windy days. Cleanup is a breeze since almost every surface is porcelain enamel or non-stick coated. I use it almost exclusively for tailgating and get lots of questions about it at the stadium. One of the best purchases I have ever made.
A Tailgaters Delight By on 2003-12-24
I cannot say enough about this product. It is absolutely great for tailgating or any other activity where you want a grill on the go. During this past football season, we on average cooked 50-75 bratwursts and hotdogs. The grill holds about 30 at one time, so in no time you can make sure to get everyone fed. The grill is reliable, easy to set-up and breakdown, and heats up immediately. The electric start is also a huge bonus, especially in windy situations.Couple of notes: The grill comes standard with a grill and a griddle, but if you are into serious grilling then I recommend you can purchase a separate grill to replace the griddle for more grilling area. Second, Coleman sells a carrying/rolling case which is a must have for tailgating/camping. The case lets you pack everything into a small compact set and keeps your car clean when transporting. Finally, if you are seriously into grilling on the go purchase a one-gallon gas tank, the grill is highly efficient and you will get a significant amount of use out of the smaller tank.
- Everything they said it was
     By A3Q4AX9DYQUUQR on 2004-04-25
Used it first on a camping trip. Then, after we got back, cooked breakfast outdoors on a cold Wisconsin morning. This baby did what it's supposed to, and I couldn't be happier. I got an extra griddle surface and two stove grates, so keep that in mind. I don't think the grill is complete as sold, you do need the extra surfaces. At least, I did.Best performance was a full breakfast on a cold Wisconsin morning, near freezing, wind blowing. I cooked bacon, hashbrowns, and scrambled a dozen eggs in a large skillet. Then I kept the pancakes coming while we started eating. Griddles were being exchanged for stove grates, and back again. Under tough, heat-stealing conditions everything cooked fast. I did up about 20 strips of bacon, 9 hash brown patties, and the dozen eggs with ease. Then the pancakes came off quickly and smoothly as an added breakfast bonus. You try scrambling a dozen eggs at once, temperature near freezing, wind blowing, huge skillet, on any other camp stove. If you can, let me know.
- Its a *REAL* Grill You can Take with You
     By A1FVIQFSWN2JPB on 2005-01-16
The thing that I like about this grill is that it has a real slotted grilling surface; aparently a lot of the others are not open to the flame so you get a lot of grease build up. Also, this grill has a pan that you fill with water; drippings go into the water making cleanup much easier than other grills ive owned.
I use this grill primarily in my backyark cooking for myself, but it would be large enough to cook for 4-5 people easily. The base and grill both seem very sturdy, and its really easy to fold it all up for storage. The little propane tanks are nice too because you can get them at most drug/grocery stores, and you dont have to lug the big tank to the gas station for refills.
My only complints are that I havent found a Coleman cover so that I can leave it on the deck inbetween use, and that I wish it came with 2 grill surfaces instead of one grill and one griddle.
All I can say is you should definitely look at this grill before going with one of the other models...this is a real backyard BBQ that you can throw in the car at a moments notice!

- Best Grill Ever
     By A139NM2V7G4P3P on 2005-05-14
I have owned and used the Coleman Road Trip Grill for the last two years as both a home grill as well as a portable/camp grill. I have BBQ-ed with this grill in weather from 100-20 degrees, and it has never given me any problems.
I have also had it set up outside my house for the past two years, and it has stood up to everything from snow to extreme heat with very little weathering.
This is the perfect grill for someone who lives at an apartment complex and has limited porch/deck space and needs a good portable grill. I would HIGHLY recommend it.
- A good small barbeque, well designed
     By A22EELSB22SPEX on 2007-07-03
I read several reviews of this grill, and also the red one with wheels, before purchasing it. I somehow got the impression you could cook with the top down on this one, although understood you can't on the red one. I would probably have gotten the one with wheels had I called Coleman, which I did AFTER the grill was delivered. The Coleman customer service fellow confirmed that they "don't recommend cooking with the lid down." We like our meat cooked clear through (no blood visible), so this was a problem. I solved it by using some metal shelf bracers, which I line up with the open side down and the pointed side up, 3 in a row, which holds the lid up enough to keep the handle away from the heat, but still cooks everything through. Incidentally, the instruction book is not really clear about the lid issue. It says to keep the lid up while lighting it - but not while cooking with it - but Coleman recommends not cooking with it down also, as the handle might melt. It would have been a lot more intelligent for Coleman to offer options for handles - with unmeltable being one option and meltable being another! - and at least make the one on here removable so you can rig up something yourself if you want to put the lid down.
Despite this, I like the grill, it's a nice size, and I like the griddle and stove top burner options - makes it great for cooking when it's too hot in the kitchen. I made roasted vegetables on the griddle side and salmon on the grill at the same time, for a full dinner without using the stove in the kitchen. I find the 'non-stick' grill difficult to get clean - the grease seems to stick to it and I have to soak it for hours to get it clean; and will probably invest in the cast iron options soon. This is our first barbeque and we will get lots of use from it. I don't want to sound as though I don't like it - but I do want to make sure everyone knows what to expect. I am still trying to figure out if the wheels would have been worthwhile. We won't be moving this around that much, and it's certainly lightweight enough to carry if we do - so I think this is a fine option. Overall, I think it's a good choice. Since we got a good shipping price from Amazon, it was worth buying it online rather than locally - something to think about.
- Great design and performance
     By on 2003-01-04
This grill looks like a spaceship when closed, so it's kinda cool-looking. I've only used it once, but it grilled my big salmon fillet to perfection.
I also used the griddle-side to cook pancakes in the morning and they turned out great.
I bought this unit because I was having problems with my portable propane-grill. The portable grill would turn off in windy conditions and sometimes the heat wasn't strong enough to cook my chicken or kabobs.
It was windy the time I used the Road Trip grill and the flame did not turn off and my salmon came out great. I had the flame on medium because the high was too hot.
I tought I was going to save space with this unit, but this is a big unit and takes up a lot of room in my mini-van. I think it's bigger than both my portable stove and portable grill combined.
Also, you need to buy the optional griddle ($17), grill ($17), and stove grates (2@$10 each). Otherwise, you can only use one half of the grill for the kabobs, chicken, or fish and the other half for pancakes. The only problem is that you don't need pancakes at dinner time! It's hard to boil water for pasta or coffee on the grill or griddle.
These optional accessories are a must if you are cooking for two families. This way the whole grill is a grill for dinner and the whole grill is a griddle for breakfast. If you try to boil water for coffee, then you need the stove grates.
It's easy to setup and store. It's heavy. It's bulky. And, it's semi-easy to clean (it's hard to clean anything with cold water and bio-soap). The Road Trip stand is also very useful since I have more room on my Coleman Sequoia table to prepare food!
- Good Little Grill
     By on 2003-02-12
Great little grill for the person who cannot have a large grill. The griddle grill feature is really nice. I have taken it ice fishing and have also made steaks at home. Good performer. The stand is much better than that of the Grill 2 Go. Much heavier though.
- Portable and great for couples
     By APPAF2PEQEJ8N on 2005-03-29
We bought this grill a couple years ago and because its portability and size. Its ease of use and you can even eat healthier; we did. We could bring it with us for picnics and the two tailgates we attended. This grill is also great for a couple or a small family because of its size. It is super easy to clean and the grills and gritles (purchased separately) can go also in the dishwasher. I suggest using Pam for grills and the clean up will be super easy. I highly recommend this grill because of its portability and size.
- We love this BBQ grill!
     By A18VHCT9SMKDPG on 2006-04-22
We take this grill with us when we use our RV, but it cooks so well, we sometimes wish it could replace our large patio BBQ. The only reason we didn't give this 5 stars is because of the clean-up. You can't just pack it up and put it away after using it; it has to be cleaned. But it's well worth the effort. We just spent 7 days "dry" camping (not in an RV park). We used this grill to cook bacon several times--perfect! And the rib steaks we cooked were perfectly cooked also. Hot dogs, chicken...everything. My husband said if he had tried to cook those steaks on our gas BBQ at home he would have had to stand there with a spray bottle to stop the flare ups. This is an awesome grill. We look forward to buying different plates to make it more versatile. It is a great grill.
- Ended Up Giving It Away
     By A3N6W3S0MKO2IP on 2006-05-30
I was looking for a gas grill/stove combo and settled on the road trip grill. Lots of good reviews, now here's the down side: It is clunky to set up, pretty much takes two people if you want to fold it up without dropping it. The grill has a very wide solid ring around the flame ring which doesn't allow drippings to flow down and smoke, it also clogs up with burned fat. You need to look at one to see what I mean. Sorry, it just didn't suit me.
- A must have for campers/tailgaters/etc
     By A1RW2EHHFWF1X4 on 2006-08-21
We just received our Road Trip grill last week before heading to the woods of Maine for a 3 night camping trip. This grill was fantastic. We purchased the adapter hose and connected it to a 20lb tank. The grill lights with one push of the starter button and the controls are accurate. This grill puts out some serious BTU's - no issues with heat, that's for sure. The stove grate is a great accessory to have, as well as an extra grill grate. Both the grill and griddle's non-stick surfaces are as good as our expensive cookware at home. Some people may say this grill is "too heavy" but my wife had no trouble at all (she's tiny). Highly recommended.
- Great Grill.
     By A1H6JMUBVDG1A5 on 2006-10-18
I had seen the road trip grill once at a campground and knew I wanted one. I like it because it has burners like your home stove instead of one large traditional BBQ grill. Plus, the little stand works is great, I don't need an extra table anymore.
We picked this one up used, but it was like new. This grill has been the best grill I've had. We used to use those portable little grills that would only cook about 6 burgers. The burner would burn out after one camping season.
It works great. Putting water in the tray can be a bit of a pain, but cleaning it is a snap that way. I purchased a stove grate so I can use frying pans or boil water. I've replaced both my BBQ grill and cook stove in my motorhome with this one grill. Really! I also recently purchased another griddle so I can cook a whole pancake and bacon breakfast for 5 people at once. (bacon one side and pancakes on the other)
I'm really impressed with this grill. Its portable, cooks well and saves my space. (I don't carry a stove or extra table anymore) If your looking for a new grill, this is the one. You can use it at home too!
- First time user of propane grill
     By A32DAI53JLA77L on 2007-01-16
After reading reviews of portable propane grills, I decided on the Coleman Road trip grill (blue). My decision factors were based on the ubiquitous availability of the 16.4 oz canister, included stand, and the interchangeable cooking surfaces. I found these reviews very useful prior to using this grill, especially the ones that document user mistakes. The most important one is that this grill can't be used with the lid closed unlike the Weber grills. This was not evident after reading the instructions carefully. Coleman needs to rewrite their instructions and in bold letters, "Do not use this grill with the lid closed." Other reviews I found useful dealt principally with cleaning the water drip pan. I use a sponge and tranfer the greasy water to a container. The only problem that I've found is the leg extension buttons on the stand would stick and not pop out. I used a knife to align the button and eventually it would pop out. I also purchased the carrying case and the only design flaw is it can't stand upright like a rolling luggage. So it does take up more storage space than needed. Overall, the Road Trip Grill works as advertised and I'm happy with the purchase.
- terrific
     By A1U9UBC09WESCS on 2005-02-22
We just got back from our first camping trip with this baby. It was sweet when cooking breakfast, lunch or dinner. We only have one griddle and grill plate but are looking to get the other griddle and grill for large quantities. The size of this unit was perfect, it fits under our pop-ups table when traveling and we still have room for foldable chairs under there too. We bought the travel case and it was a breeze to carry. Also my husband hates to clean up but used the outside shower and cleaned the grill in minutes. I recommend it to camping enthusiasts.
- Jeep Wrangler Needed Accessory
     By A1TGWN9KMF2XJ0 on 2005-06-13
A++ With-out a doubt the best portable grill ever. Fits like a snug glove between the 3rd brake light and the rear bench in a wrangler. Even off roading, the grill stays tight. My only neutral comment would be that you should deffinatly buy the second grilling plate as it comes with one grill plate ad 1 grittle. I tell ya though, making bacon on eggs on this tgrill while camping made me "one happy camper". Easily cook food for 6+ people on the 1st cooking. Enjoy!
- Good grill, cleanup a serious issue
     By A3C2CPTCMB7S4N on 2007-07-03
I have had this grill for 3 seasons and we use it as our primary grill. Basically, 3-4 times per month during the summer we make burgers, steaks, dogs, etc.
Overall, this grill does a nice job cooking things, but the cleanup is really a headache. I truly don't know why more folks haven't commented on this, but you have a tray in there that you must fill with water. The grease drips into the tray and, inevitably, at the end of the session you have a grease-water mixture with all sorts of nasty debris floating in the tray. You now have to dump this somewhere (like behind bushes or into a grease can) and then wash the entire thing which is totally gross. Compared to say, the Weber Q (which my neighbor has), this is a nightmare for cleanup.
In terms of build construction, it is fine for a portable grill I suppose, but again, much flimsier than the Q. A strong gust of wind blew it down and now the legs do not work well and are bent.
In sum, not a bad grill, but I think things like the Q are superior in terms of build quality and cleanup for a very similar price.
- Great Grill!!!!!!!!!!!
     By AW6WW4LJUHJQR on 2004-11-04
This grill is great. I spent weeks researching all portable grills for tailgating and for the fact that I live in a small apt. No other grill compares. With the Baby-Q, you have to buy a separate stand and separate bag. The Road Trip comes with the stand for virtually the same price.(The Road Trip was going for $133 here vs. $129 for the Q.) The grill works great and at a very high BTU rating. The Q is 8500 BTUs vs 20,000 for the Road Trip. Also, 2 burners on the Road Trip. And as for the Grill2Go, it doesn't even come close to comparing. Read the reviews for yourself. All in all, this is the best portable gas grill for the money.

I have been very unhappy with my Road Trip Grill with the primary source of my irritation being the poor engineering of the grill cover. Users are not able to cook food with the grill cover closed. If one cooks with the cover closed, the handle will melt, and the user is also susceptible to serious burns. My question is this: Why have a cover on a grill if you are not able to cook with the cover closed? It makes no sense.
- Awesome Fathers Day Gift
     By on 2003-10-16
This grill kicks butt. It runs circles around other grills that are twice the price. It is very easy to set up and take down. The heat is even and everyone that has seen and eaten from my grill wants one of their own. Best gift I have received in years...
- Great Grill
     By A3QTHEUPU463SH on 2004-04-27
This is the absolute Best Grill on the market. An all NEW ingenious design that will change the traditional cumbersome gas grill as we know it!
Bought one for my son as a new home warming gift....I have had one for two months! Its is AWESOME.
I did my homework...and looked at all of the competion..including the Q-Grill................cant stand in the same backyard. The griddle and Grill combo is fabulous and the ingenious design for the water tank to catch grease and two burner operation...is a killer...
Buy their stock!
- Actually, I would rate this great little grill 4.5 stars
     By A1JON1G6KVLFS4 on 2007-07-01
My wife and I recently purchased a pop-up camper that came with a gas grill that attaches to one of the outside walls. It hooks up to the camper's LP gas system via a hose, making it very convenient, but it didn't produce very much heat and it took way too long to cook even hamburgers.
Since I generally do the cooking while we're camping, I started looking at portable grills to take with us instead of the camper's grill. After seeing the red Road Trip at a store, I did some research and decided the blue Road Trip would be perfect for us. My wife resisted at first, but finally relented after becoming frustrated with the (lack of) performance of the grill supplied with our camper.
We purchased the blue Road Trip, as well as an extra griddle, grill, and adapter hose for a 20 lb gas tank. We used the grill this weekend for cooking burgers, hot dogs, omelets, bacon, and scrambled eggs, and for heating various buns and rolls. Overall, we are very pleased with this grill. Set up is a snap, it is reasonably stable even on uneven ground, it heats up very quickly and produces lots of even heat. I know some of the reviewers said that you cannot cook with the cover closed, but I had no problems doing just that for the short periods of time it took to cook the foods we did. I also found the water pan to be extremely useful, both in eliminating flare ups and in making clean up easier. I didn't find that it made clean up difficult or awkward at all, as some others have. I just carefully poured the water into a 5 gallon bucket until I could dump it later. And using plastic utensils instead of metal should protect the finish of the cooking surfaces.
The only quibbles I have with the grill are very minor. The adjustable pads on the bottoms of the legs don't have 'stops' on them, so they easily unscrew all the way off the legs. And the slots around the perimeter of the griddle allowed the eggs to run off and into the water pan if I wasn't quick enough to prevent it. I think in the future we will probably add the stove grate to our other accessories so we can use a frying pan.
I rate this grill 4.5 stars instead of 5 only because I don't believe any man-made creation could ever be perfect! :)
- Road Trip Grill is great!!
     By A2RWU8T5R6QV9M on 2003-05-07
I've had my Coleman Road Trip Grill for about a year. This grill is used all year. I like the fact that it has such nice accessories. I bought another grill plate, 2 stove grates and the tote/storage bag. If you are making burgers on the grill you can also fry up some potatoes on the stove grate. Unlike the Thermos Grill you have just a griddle and grill to cook on.
The Road Trip Grill has 2 separate burners with 2 separate controls, so if you have a small amount to cook you don't have to heat up the whole grill (the Thermos Grill 2 Go has one longer burner which means you have to heat the entire unit)
The only improvement I can suggest on the Road Trip Grill is that it needs a way to drain the water tray. Gets a little messy if you happen to put more water in tray than needed.
I still wouldn't trade my Coleman Road Trip Grill for a Thermos Grill
- Perfect
     By A2JBH0TLWR2BWM on 2007-04-11
This grill is amazing! I bought it for my boyfriend's birthday and we used it for the third time to tailgate for baseball season. Well, it ended up being 28 degrees (and really windy) that day and we were worried that it wouldn't get hot enough - it worked like a champ - just as well as the first time we used it. We have also used it for homemade pizzas!
One thing I had trouble with when buying this item: the grill comes with ONE GRILL grate and ONE GRIDDLE grate. If you plan on grilling mostly, get the extra grill grate - we are glad we did.
- was a great little grill when it worked
     By A32YUNB0LXB7OA on 2007-06-13
I buy alot of stuff on Amazon, but this is my first review. I bought this grill in time to take it on a 4 day trip to a Nascar race. Even though we had a 32ft class A motorhome, I intended to use this grill to cook all the meals. Worked great for 2 days. cooked burgers, dogs, chicken. and pancakes in the AM on the griddle. the grill produced far more heat than I would have thought. However, lunch on the 3rd day - grill would not light. I was using a large propane tank with the accessory hose to retrofit. plenty of gas in the tank, and teh hose was working fine. the ignition was sparking, but no gas to the burners. I can only guess that it is the regulator assembly on the grill. in any event I ended up cooking burgers in a frying pan on the stove for a day and a half. I was not happy about this. I've emailed customer support at Coleman, and gotten no response. I called the 800 number, but it was busy. I ordered the regulator assembly replacement for $22(incl shipping), and it should arrive in 2-5 weeks if I am lucky. the webste warns that it may be longer for parts during the summer. I may just have gotten a lemon, but my experience with this grill has not been too good

I got this grill for camping. It is worth every penny. It cooks so fast. I did buy the extra griddle and the grate for cooking pots and pans on. It is a pleasure cooking meals on this grill.
