The earphones are also open-air, meaning they allow ambient noises to enter the ear; this translates to a safer headphones, as the listener will be aware of horns, whistles and shouts. These headphones are constructed of an anti-bacterial material for a cleaner listening experience. The MDR-ED21LP's deliver a quality sound, even with their small size. The groove design and Bass Booster earpiece shape allows for a better fit; additionally, this system creates more bass response than conventional earpiece designs. The headphones use sixteen millimeter drive units for a deep bass and clear treble. Sony also uses neodymium magnets which provide more energy per ounce than other conventional magnets. The PET diaphragm gives the headphones a high rigidity for minimum distortion. Finally, Sony's Acoustic Twin Turbo circuit achieves high sonic output by utilizying sound chamber and duct technology. Almost Perfect By A2KIECJVK96NME on 2004-10-25
I got these headphones and also the MDR-EX51LP, I liked these better than the MDR-EX51LP because the sounds it produced was crisper and overall just much better. My only problem with these is that the chord is a little short, just a little over 3ft.
I didn't choose the MDR-EX51LP because that the bass was way too loud. I know that people like bass, but whenever you listen to songs with lyrics all you can hear is the bass, and the spoken stuff gets drowned a bit.
I like the MDR-ED21LP because it was just right, and it was actually louder. I use them on my IAudio CW200 and I usually set my volume to 25. When I have it in that volume level MDR-EX51LP is just too low to even hear it. Even though it goes into your ear canal it doesn't perform as loud as the the MDR-ED21LP. You can also hear some ruffling noise whenever the chord rubs in your clothes, like the stetoscope effect, as another user reviewed.
For the MDR-ED21LP, everything is great, crisp, loud sound, great bass. My only complaint is the chord length.
Best sub-$100 earphones, and cheap! By ALXFN5BF1H691 on 2005-09-09
I've tried all sorts of earphones, and these are the best for under $100 (best I've tried that costs more are the Etymotics). They're cheap, the bass response is wonderful thanks to the extra over the bud 'horn'. You will get much better sound than you will with the flat buds (even the $50 ones) without actually sticking something right in your ear canal.
I use my trusty pair of these with my iPod Nano. For only $10-15 they sound so much better than the headphones that came with the Nano that I feel kind of cheated.
I still think a good pair of headphones (Sony MDR-CD790) are more comfortable for long periods of time, but they're not nearly as portable. Also, the cord on these is sometimes a bit too short (but most of the time it's nice not to have the extra stuff laying around).
These are the best I tryed out of the following: By A27VLGZLS3VUJ7 on 2006-03-24
I bought to try the following earphones: Koss KSC9, which are earphones with clips over the ears, Koss KSC22 which are with clips over the ears as well. I wanted the clip so that the earphones would not fall out from my ear so easely, And these two models do not fall from the ear no matter what you do. But the sound quality is depending at the way you will insert them to your ears. But Sony MDR ED21LP was a surprise to me: not only they fit so well in my ears, they will hold them selves very nicely within the ears (maybe after some time you will need to push/fit them in a little, but even without doing so, they will not fall out) and they sound much better because they are acting like internal earbuds, without being forced and sealed inside the ear canal, which is very un healthy for the ears. this Sony model does the trick very well, they fit very nice, quickly and locating them selves in the optimal way in the ear cavity, and they have this special rubber part that is gently inserted into the ear canal, but without the pressure of the tight sealing, so you get a surprising louder bass then any of the earphones models that do not have this aditional "sound tube". I am a musician and I can tell very well if the sound is even slightly better. I am going to get me another set of these so well sounding earphones. The sound is balanced all across. I like to hear a good bass sound and this Sony model gives me the best joy of listening so far with these sizes of earphones. (My Mother tang in not English, so please forgive me if there are any mistakes).
Possibly the Best Earbud Headphones Period By A3N3F4PYRTUNNZ on 2005-08-31
I just bought my third pair of these headphones and that would be my only complaint -- they seem to be less durable than other non-earbud headphones.
I inadvertently crushed my first pair while walking. I took out my earbuds, lost my grip, and the right one hit the pavement just in time to meet the sole of my on-coming shoe. My fault on that one.
My second pair started to short after 3 solid years use. I am a musician/producer, and I love listening to music whenever I am walking, traveling or doing anything mind-numbingly boring. I used these headphones with a variety of players and they were thrown in backpacks, suitcases, carry-on bags, pockets -- everywhere. Just recently, they started to lose signal in the left earbud. I think this is related to the L-shaped plug and my wrapping the headphones around my CD player when not listening to it.
Around the same time, I finally joined the rest of the world and upgraded to an iPod. I hate Apple's earbuds and I heard that the iPod EQ was both a battery sucker and a sucker in its own right. I knew I wanted to get my old trusty Sony's to complete my iPod migration, but I couldn't find them at all in those crappy, electronics megachains; you know the ones -- tons of equipment, clueless staff, and prices that are kinda good, but not great. I started to fear that I would need to buy those really expensive "iHeadphones" on the market that are made "just for the iPod," cost 10x more than the Sony's and don't sound any better.
Alas, you can get 'em right here on Amazon and I managed to find mine in a local Mom & Pop electronics store here in Manhattan. As I mentioned before, I just wish these headphones were indestructible so I wouldn't need to buy a new pair every few years. Other than that, they are hands down the best portable audio earbuds out there. Great bass response and faithful mids and highs. My iPod sounds great without any EQ. And for $15 bucks, this may be the first reasonably priced iPod accessory for miserly musicians like me. Get your pair before Sony tries to repackage them as an overpriced iHeadphones for the iPod degeneration. Enjoy.
Excellent Earbuds By A1GCZ34OOQONGF on 2005-12-28
First of all, there's one very important thing to be said: I'm using an iPod Mini. I'm really amazed with the sound that this small electronic device can supply.. The sound is so great that I even believed at first that the Apple headphones were great. Of course, after some time I started to notice the lack of sound quality, isolation and bass.
After searching the web for earbuds, I've noticed that there are 2 very different types:
- flat earbuds (just like the Apple's)
- canal phones (very expensive Koss, Etymotic or Shure phones, that you really "stick" in your ear)
Of course there are great quality flat phones, but the bass power is always very week, even on the top ones, as I could see with the Bang & Olufsen Earbuds.
On the other hand, the Canal Phones require some time for you to get used to it. The isolation and bass power are really incredible, but they are very agressive to your ears.
Well, the Sony MDR-ED21LP are the ONLY earbuds that I found, that are really in the middle of these 2 types..
They are not flat at all, which really enhances the bass, but they are really NOT agressive to your ears.
Besides, the sound quality is fantastic (remember that I'm using the Powerful iPod Mini), and you can use them for many hours in a row without even feeling them.
And priced like this, I totally recommend these earbuds.
- Best Buds for the money
     By AR5TAXR46YB4L on 2006-03-24
I love these phones! I actually have two sets now, i thought i lost the first and missed them so much after a week of using the crappy Apple 'phones that i ordered another set. Found the old ones a week later in the shirt pocket of a shirt that had been washed. They still worked! They are really comfortable after you wear them for a few days. Initally the earpieces are kinda stiff, and they feel weird, simply because of how they're made, but they're like a good pair of shoes: the first few days are a lil uncomfortable, but after they're broken in, you'll forget you have them on. Highly recommended!
- Big bang for the buck!
     By A2FYIA7306HH74 on 2006-07-09
I purchased these headphones to use with my portable DVD player. I've never had much luck with earbud style headphones staying in my ear so I was reluctant to buy these. However, I took a chance hoping for better results.
The 21's fit even better than I expected. It takes far more than a simple head tilt to jar them loose and, at the same time, they felt very comfortable in my ear.
Next, I plugged them into my DVD player. When I read about the "high sonic output" in the product description I thought it was nothing more than hyperbole used by Sony to sell it's product. Not only is it NOT hyperbole, but it may even be an understatement. These headphones produce tremendous output, almost too much. I compared the levels with another conventional set of headphones (also Sony). To get the same output in the other headphone as the 21's at volume level 1 I had to adjust the volume level to 6. This is a huge advantage as listening at lower levels obviously causes less drain on the battery.
To get a better idea of how they sounded I played one of the concert DVD's I have. (Incidentally, if you want to see some old geezers out perform bands even half their age, rent a copy of The Who Live AT Royal Albert Hall. Stones fans take note...these are REAL musicians). Anyway, the quality of sound that these headphones produced was well above average and, considering the price, everything you could hope for. The sound was crisp, the bass was adequate and most of all they didn't sound "tinny". Also, they do block out a fair amount of external noise, but not completely. As well, anyone who is in close proximity will not be disturbed as these headphones emit very little external sound.
The ED21LP's would be a good set of headphones at double the price. For under $20 they're definitely 5 star headphones.
- Nice sound, very good bass, great headphones!
     By A1EOTB1WHLSW6G on 2004-04-22
Noticed the difference from the first time I tried them. Bass and sound quality are just great! (I had to turn the bass boost off in my Zire 71). No complaints.
- Gentlemen, Start Your Equalizers...
     By AFN3I0KETK4BW on 2005-03-01
While all bud style headphones have different sound/frequency profiles at different volume levels, these ED21's seem to be a bit more variable than my other sets. Not that it's that much of a big deal, and maybe some wouldn't notice, but I listen to my music in two distinctly different situations. I listen at night at a low volume level, and also at a much higher volume level when at work.
What you may not be able to see from the picture, is that there is a little rubber shape that goes into your ear canal. This is the main reason I bought them, as I was looking to buy something the equivalent of foamies (or whatever you call the foams you put on earbuds) that had a little ear canal funnel built in. There is a company that makes them, but I chose not to get them since they're overpriced and rather large.
Both buds have rather sharp tops, so I had to put foamies on these, thus ruining the cool look a little, and cutting out a little of the high range. But even before that, I had a little trouble with the right earbud's rubber funnel thing getting a little folded over. Maybe it's improper insertion technique, but I've since figured out how to have it pop back out while still in my ear (pull back).
Once in, they don't have the irritating ability to move around. Nothing irked me more with my other earbuds than having ear position dictate how much bass and volume I was getting. I routinely have my jacket pull at the cord a little, and these keep the sound constant by not having the bud move.
You can hear when the music is off. I stayed away from the EX51 and 71, and also Koss's Plug, due to a concern about the ability to hear people/cars/etc when needed.
Would I recommend them? Yes. Buy them again? Definately, at least until someone makes the same exact design better. But minus one star because I had to put foamies on them due to the sharp tops. Boo, Sony, you know know better. That said, Thanks, Sony, for the great sounding buds.
- Best Bet for Good Simple Earbuds
     By A2BC4XQ93JNU4D on 2005-11-06
I have literally tried a dozen different earbud headphones for my new mp3 player...these are by FAR the best.
The sealing ear-tips block out too much external sound and are expensive, the lesser earbuds are bulky, fat, ugly, and sound horrible.
These are just the right combination...the seal in the ear really well, but don't block out important external sounds, they don't fall out of your ears, they are small and unobtrusive, and most importantly they have great sound! Not to mention, at this price they are about 1/3 the cost of comparable earbuds.
Strongly recommend...I'm buying a second pair in case I lose the first...
- Excellent, Powerful, Vibrant, Clean: Great Headphones
     By A3SX687V07I7V0 on 2006-10-03
I don't know why some people who post reviews are so incredibly picky. For paying a little over 10 dollars for these headphones, they are absolutely amazing. They play loud and clean at very low volume levels. They fit in the ear very nicely and DO NOT come out with a simply shake of the head. They have a very nice clean bass sound that is strong for such a economically-priced set of headphones. It has great range of frequency response and the cord is a perfect length for any person's application/use. These are simply an excellent set of headphones for the price. For all you music lovers out there like myself, if you want to hear clean crisp sound right in your ear canal at an extremely affordable price, go with the ED21's. Besides, those that go farther in the ear cause canal damage and thus loss of hearing anyways. These are a best-bet, no doubt.

     By A1DFC1G5W2L8KR on 2005-11-27
After reading thru dozens of reviews for different earphones, I finally gave in & ordered two pair for my wife & I. Turns out I made the correct choice! These sound great, are easy to insert, & the build quality is impressive. I LOVE the "rubberized" feel of the wires, they do not get tangled up nearly as easily as others I've owned & they feel like they are sturdy enough to last a good long time. Sound quality wise , they seems pretty balanced overall, no real emphasis at any one frequency. Perhaps a teensy bit reduced in bass response, but I think this is more due to getting them fitted right versus any real shortcomings. Besides I would rather have less bass response with smoother overall response anytime. Nice job, Sony!
- Sony Headphones Have Bass
     By A3OI5HKNRI2TH4 on 2006-11-04
I am a very active person, so I have used many headphones before these that could not hang with excessive movement. I run, play soccer, bicycle (not recommended due to safety) with these earbuds and they are right there with me every step of the way. The sound quality is not as good as fully enclosed phones for obvious reasons, but these are manuverable, light headphones that have great volume and good bass response.
I also recently tried a friends Bose earbuds that cost $100 and there was little difference in sound quality. On the other hand, when we run our weekly 5k he constantly complains about them falling out of his ear. I guess some people have to learn the hard way.
- Great little headphones
     By A1YZSS3N2MV9B5 on 2005-09-03
I don't have much experience with headphones (especially earbuds), but these have been great. I needed a cheap pair of headphones while at a convention a while back and so I bought these on a whim and they have endured a lot of abuse. I just got an ipod and they feel a lot better than the earbuds that came with that (they hurt my ears after wearing them for a while). These have never hurt my ears. The sound quality is great from my perspective and for the price, I was happy. I just ordered the white Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia headphones so that it will match the color of my ipod, but I will write a review of those once they come in. Sony = reliability in my book.
- The best affordable sound out there
     By A1VGKQQYW3C067 on 2005-09-21
I had the previous model for 5 years. Now I just bought 3 pairs of this ones because they are just great.
Yes, they are big, 16mm drive, but nothing can replace the power that the size can create. I tried the hi-tec in-ear top of the line too.... not only they're kind of dangerous (to have a decent bass, you need to pump up the volume) but they don't look durable....and the sound is just not the same. Ok. with perfect fitting etc.... you could, but earbuds means ON THE GO, street, skate, bike, running....do you have time for microadjustements all the time?. I need my hands on the handlebar, not my ears.
Get this ones, they are heavy duty, durable, and wide range 8~20,000
.
- Fontopia are the Fonz of Earbuds
     By AEP0PLQSMIQRA on 2005-12-03
Very happy with the sound of these compared to about 5 different sets of headphones/earbuds. The difference in sound reproduction between these and the others is analagous to the difference between listening to a CD player versus an FM broadcast. They are also much more efficient, which means more volume at lower signal output. That translates to longer battery life. I'm only giving 4 starts because Amazon says the in-line volume control is a key feature, but it does not exist. I guess the earpieces are anti-bacterial. If so, they are getting a workout with all the ear wax that is slimed all over them (but that is probably too much information).
- Excellent sound
     By AT2DGCSWU1UXJ on 2005-12-26
The sound was excellent. The bass is higher in these then normal headphones but that can be ajusted on your computer or MP3 player. they are actually "bass booster" headphones. They are very comfortable and give good quality sound. Not much ambient noise can be heard.
- Uncomfortable
     By A1YZDBXCAO3ZM2 on 2006-06-20
I bought a set of these to replace my original iPod earphones when they started malfunctioning. On the good side, the sound is decent. On the bad side, these earbuds are very uncomfortable. After more than a week of usage, I still can't find a positioning that will let me wear them for more than an hour without getting seriously annoyed. Also the cord is both short and not as convenient as iPod cords when it comes to folding/unfolding, tangling/untangling.
I wish there was a way of testing earbuds before buying them. All I can say is, look at how many people writing these reviews are complaining about the ear fitting issues, and decide for yourself. I did this and bet that I wouldn't have problems, but obviously I lost. Clearly, I'm recommending that you pass, even though the offer is tempting.
- Great sound, low price = a must have!
     By AIEOH19T22OQC on 2006-10-17
Received this Sony MDR-E21LP yesterday and used it immediately. Wow, sounded beautifully and fit comfortable in my ears. The length of the cord is long enough for me or maybe a little too long. Also I like the material of the cord, it is very flexilbe and so less chance of tangle up.
Some reviewers gave this earphones a low rating and I think it is unfair to it. You really have to remember how much you pay for it. Don't try to compare it with those high end earphones.
I also like the design of the earbuds. You don't have to push them into your ear canals like the Sony MDR-EX71SL and MDR-E51LP do. That could perminantly damage your ear drums if you constantly set the volume too high.
Baseline is I highly recommend it to everyone who doesn't want to pay a high price on a set of earphones and yet want beautiful sound quality. You don't have to go elsewhere, you've found it -- the Sony MDR-E21LP.
- You can do better for less
     By A36M049GFYKBW6 on 2007-05-15
These earphones have adequate sound, and they are certainly better than the cheapo earphones you can pick up at a dollar store. But they are not as great as other reviewers have made them out to be, and I have since found a better pair of earphones for less. First of all, these earphones have a design flaw. Each earphone has separate speakers for bass and above bass. The above bass speakers reach toward the ear canal, blocking sound from the bass speakers. This diminishes the bass sound you can get from these earphones. My general experience with these earphones is that the sound is attenuated, and some artists don't sound as good. I immediately noticed that October Project (with Mary Fahl on vocals) didn't sound as good as usual. I later bought a live Blondie album and wondered if Debbie Harry didn't sing as well in concert as she does in the studio. Not long after, I bought a pair of Panasonic clip-on earphones from Walmart: the Panasonic RP-HS6, which cost me less than half what you can get the Sony MDR-ED21LP for from Amazon. These delivered much better sound. October Project and Blondie both sounded great, as did everything else. They are great clip-ons. Instead of suspending speakers near the ear, they are earbuds, fitting inside the ear like other earbuds, held in place more securely by over-the-ear attachments. They lack the design flaw of these Sonys, stay in more securely, and have a wider range, 10 Hz - 25 Khz vs. the Sony's 8 Hz - 23 Khz.
- Best of the cheap ear buds...
     By A1YFCP4W6WBZT8 on 2005-08-13
As far as I'm concerned the Sony MDR-ED21LP's are the best of the
simple, bud-type earphones. The sound quality is very good with full
base and good high-end without sounding too "tinny". The unique shape
fits in the ear nicely and doesn't cause too much discomfort over
several hours of use (like on airplanes or in the gym). I own several
of these since bud earphones are something I use all the time. Most
consumer-electronic stores don't carry these but they are worth
seeking out. Highly recommended!
- A must have for the price/ sound
     By A2LMVPPK3ATL4H on 2005-08-26
In the past two weeks I have ordered many different types an sizes of earbuds(I figured my ears must be a different SIZE than everyone else's)since most of the ones I ordered didn't feel good on/in my ear. I didn't want to spend a fortune on Earbuds that I would probably lose or sit on and crush. Since I use them with my mp3 player(iriver) and mainly for walking, price was a major concideration. The Sony MDR-EC21LP earbuds I have found to be great in the two areas that I have mentioned "price/confort" I would recommend them very highly to people with different size ears like mine.
- not totally bad
     By A2GTAIEMQL2187 on 2006-01-13
well, I've been looking for a new pair of earbuds for my Iriver H10 5GB player because I thought I could find something better than what I was using. The H10 comes stock with a pair of Sennheiser MX400's Which sound pretty good but the headphones that I am actually using with my H10 are the Iriver/sennheiser earbuds that came with the IFP-899 1GB flash player that I had from before. I had figured that they were probably the same headphones, but I was wrong. In doing a side by side comparison I found that the ones with the IFP player sounded better than the MX400's i.e. more bass, better snap with the snare drums etc...the old ones have a gold plated L shaped connector and the behind the neck type cord (one cord shorter than the other), and the MX400's have a regular cord and no gold connector. Maybe the MX400's Just need some break-in time??
Anyway....onto the MDR-ED21LP's....I was going to buy the MDR-ex71's, but they were getting such poor reviews as far as the durability goes, so I looked into the ED21's. It seemed to me that having a 16mm driver unit (over the 9mm on the EX71's) would be a good thing for deeper bass reproduction, and these little tube things would direct more of the sound into your ears, but I did not find this to be the case. I actually took an idea from another reviewer and took off the rubber things and put "foamies" on them and found that I was able to get better bass response this way. I found the high-midrange to be a little bit lacking in these....powerful snare hits just did not POP quite as hard. I do like the way they fit and they seem to be fairly durable. I listen to a lot of bass heavy rock, so I like a good chunky low end, I also listen to some hip hop and rap so I wanted something that could handle some good low bass drops. I still want something very portable so I am sacrificing the sound of a good pair of studio headphones with large drivers for the portability of earbuds. I know I will never get the bass response I really want out of earbuds but the sonys just don't do as well as the sennheisers I already have. I am a drummer and a bass and guitar player and though I don't consider myself an "audiophile" (this term is used WAY to much and over half of the people who claim to be audiophiles probably could not even hear a 3 or 4 db increase or decrease at 400 hertz)I am pretty picky about sound quality, and this is why I am only giving the sonys 3 stars.
it is possible that they just need some more break-in time to get some more bass response out of them, but they still seem to lack a little bit of liveliness in the rest of the range...... still not as bad as the headphones that come with the Creative Zen Micro and Micro Photo's....those things are horrid.... although I don't think there are any headphones under $300 that could make the creative players sound good :)
- Not Pleased
     By AWYHIUM09LBTE on 2006-02-21
I bought these ear phones after reading previous reviews. My use consists of listening to Ipod while on machines at the gym and riding my bicycle (off road). These are so uncomfortable I cannot use them. They sound so bad I don't want to use them. However, because the package is open, I cannot return them.
Comfort: They appear to be an earbud type of headphone, but with a cover which directs sound into your ear canal. The cover is 'shrink-wrapped' to the earphone, and a small portion of the outside edge of the cover rubs against my ear (VERY irritating). The earphones are also too large to fit into my ear comfortably.
Sound: Bad. I'm comparing to my Ipod OEM and other sony earbuds. I'd rate these a "1" on a scale of one to ten, and the apple earbuds a 5 or 6. These sound so bad they are not even worth critiquing. If you like the sound of your old 1 speaker am radio alarm clock, the sound should be fine for you.
- My favorite earphone.

I continue to buy the Sony Earbuds year after year. They're reasonably priced, are the most comfortable to me, but more importantly seem to offer the best sound quality. I am able to hear many musical details using the earbuds that don't seem to be audible using other speakers (like my car). They are my favorites.
- The best in this price range

I am not a music pro, but can tell an excellent headphone from a good one. This one is so good that I can hardly tell the difference from my $299 Bose QuietComfort® 2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling® headphone. If you do not like this one, you are likely have to spend $300 for a bose.
- Possibly defective product
     By A19JXBW6F2XR0P on 2005-04-08
When I took these headphones out of the package i was expecting everything to go wrong. I've always have bad luck with sony earbuds. So i plugged them in to my iPod and what do ya know. They scratch pop and cut out in certain sides when the plug is nudged a slight bit. Yes it is plugged all the way in and when i plug my sennheiser hd457's in they work just fine. Im going to return these and see if i cant have better luck with another brand. But when I could hear them the audio was phenomenal. Highly reccomended if you dont get a bad pair.

- Great headphones
     By A1M0XRXPXPMC29 on 2006-12-10
These Sony headphones have been a long time favorite of mine.
I just read in consumers reports (December 2006 issue) that they were rated the best sounding earbud type headphones of all the ones tested. Comsumer reports states: "With a winning combination of very good sound and a very low price, these Sony earbuds are a CR Best Buy."
Headphone reviews are always very subjective, but for the cost you get a great sounding headphone for portable use.
