They won't even know they are learning! By A1JCUTNUQYXX0C on 2004-01-26
This is a great game. I would not recommend it for children under 4 unless your child is just extremely advanced. My 4 yo can play some areas of the game easily, but the word areas are more difficult and he becomes frustrated. BUT for kindergarteners this game is just right. My 6 yo is learning a lot, and unlike other learning software, she doesn't mind playing it because it's fun and of course there is the very cute and charismatic Sponge Bob. The goal of the game is to get ingredients to make a new secret sauce. Upon completing the different areas of the game you are given some of the ingredients to make the sauce. So the children get the sense of reward for all of their work. That's been enough motivation for my daughter. It teaches counting, math, letters, word building, and there's music (I'm probably leaving a few things out) It's wonderful, a must have for all leapster owners.
Alright... if you really like SpongeBob By A2X3L31KCXBHCL on 2005-01-10
The idea of this game is that the child helps Sponge Bob collect ingredients to create a new secret sauce. The animation is cute, but the games are too easy (my son is 4) and it takes too long to collect the ingredients. Once enough ingredients are collected, the child then gets to play "kitchen chemistry" which is not much fun. The child can either guess at the recipe or tap or SpongeBob to get it. Patrick does the taste test and it is funny to watch his reactions, but "kitchen chemistry" is just not exciting, interesting nor challenging enough to keep the child coming back for more.
In addition to "kitchen chemistry", the cartridge has four other games:
"Counting Claw": Has 3 levels, deals with counting change. the child sticks coins into a slot until he has put in the right amount. My son blindly sticks the coins in the slot until SPongeBob reacts. Then he enjoys playing the claw machine game and the wacky prizes that come out. But he learns nothing.
"Conveyor Chaos": Very similiar to the bunny game that comes with the leapster system. Done a little better, but not very versatile.
"Musical Garden": The child only has to play with assorted sea music until the timer runs out. The child's symphony is not played back. Music appreciation?? Whatever.
"Bubble Scrubber": The one redeeming game on this cartridge. Unfortunately it only deals with 4 letter words. And there is nothing to entice the child to try more challenging levels. I did get my son to start using level 3 instead of 1 by playing it with him and now he prefers level 3. Although I do know the value of repetition, a few more words would be nice.
After experiencing First Grade (which is still my son's favorite), I was disapointed. This game is only mediocore.
stick to manufacturer's age By A2MOXO0KEKYT2R on 2004-01-01
I saw this item on several websites with a recommended age of 3-6 years. I bought it for my son today (he got the leapster for Christmas) The age recommendation on the box is 5-8 yrs. My son is 4 and although he likes Sponge Bob, he told me he can't do it & asked me to play the games while he watches. Even the level 1 games are conciderably more difficult than the games on the cartridge that came with the toy. One section involves counting coins. I'm sure he will "grow into" the games and learn them from watching me- he sits on my lap while I play. I would definitely recommend this one for a slightly older child.
More excited than my child!!! By A1TN5S0GFXRLIS on 2003-12-15
I love all of the Leapfrog products so this was very exciting to see. I had considered buying my 5 year old a Gameboy Advanced but I really didn't care for how small the viewing screen is or it's size in general. For someone of her age, the Leapster has a larger screen and buttons that are easier for her to control and handle and the graphics are very good. It also uses touch screen / PDA technology so she can write right on the screen. I love how they incorporate the concepts from games like "Frogger" into a game with a rabbit and developing multiplication problems. It's fun to play and learn from. I don't feel that this is as fragile as a gameboy advanced either so that's why I felt that this toy deserved a 5 star worthy rating. Overall, I think this is a really great, first time electronic game for a child of my daughter's age (5).
FUN By on 2004-02-01
My 4 year old son received the SpongeBob game for Chrismas. He loves it! He has been able to figure out the games. At first he had lots of questions but he is able to complete all the games now.
- excellent

My four year old stayed up until 2 am playing this game and he had to be coached to go to sleep. He than woke up at 6:00 am the next morning to continue playing. He loves it and has not but it down since we purchase it.
- Great product but my cartridge was deffective
     By A10EKP6L1O3BVA on 2003-12-28
This is an excellent product. My 5 years old felt immediately in love with it. The thing that I appreciate most is how leapster breaks down activities into manageable parts. This is an excellent method to teach more complex to kids.HOWEVER, my cartridge was deffective. Well, at least customer service told me so. It seemed to be more like a software problem since I simply could not change screens at the "musical garden" part of the game. I called customer service and they promptly offered me to send me a replacement. But, this is not the level of quality I would expect after forking 25 bucks for this kind of software. This particular cartridge has a lot of fun games, but I believe it is in light side of teaching hardcore skills. If you are looking for something more educational probably you should get another cartridge like the "Pre-K" or "1st grade" ones.
- Spongebob+Leapster=Learning!
     By A10566TEP2SO6I on 2005-03-25
I highly recommend this Spongebob cartridge for the Leapster system! My little boy is a big spongebob fan and on Christmas morning he got from Santa a leapster and some Leapster games, of course Spongebob is one of his favorites. My little boy is almost 4 and he completely understands each game included on the spongebob cartridge and in the 3 months we have had this game he is already going to higher levels with the game. It teaches while letting your child have fun and that is what is the most important, if your child is having fun while learning they will continue to keep learning!
This spongebob cartridge teaches the values of money, colors, music game and more. The voices sound the same as on the cartoon and it keeps my little boy intrested in playing it still after 3 months he plays this game on a daily basis!
I would suggest this leapster cartridge for all!

I am six. I got this a year ago when I was 5. I think the kids will like the Kitchen Chemistry, Counting Claw, and the one where you get griddle grease best! I learned a lot from the Bubble Scrub game where you try to spell the words. That was pretty hard for me. The rest of it was very easy. Basically all of it is pretty good. This is the end of my journaling on this website. Bye- Bye. I think you'll like my suggestions for toys.
- Great toy for 6 & up
     By A312MUZUYPRPDX on 2004-01-17
this toy is definetly not for children under 5. My four year old daughter is a very good at the game that comes with the leapster she can do all of the level three games but sponge bob is a very hard game to play. I'm 30 and it was fun for me but I can see that it was hard for my daughter the recomended age was appropriate from the manufactuer but not right with amazon.com
- 8 yo loves this game
     By AYPL8MQFMLLYT on 2003-12-27
Bought the Leapster for my 3 kids (8, 6 and 3 1/2) and my 8 yo especially likes the SpongeBob game. He is learning words, math, money counting (or reinforcing -- he already knows some of these skills -- 3rd grade). He said that "this is better than a gameboy -- a lot more fun". He has a gameboy advance SP about about 30+ games. Imagine that -- and he learns something with the Leapster. I am loving it. I will buy more software as it comes out (also already bought Dora -- 3 yr old loves, Kindergarten, 1st grade and Mr. Pencil's Learn to Draw as well as SpongeBob). Would love to get my hands on Math Baseball for my 3rd grader to practice multiplication math facts!!!!
- Pretty Coolio
     By A2UKT61KI6L496 on 2005-03-23
This game is very exciting for my son, he is five, I am teaching him to read his blends and this is a great reinforcer. I enjoy watching him do the math (one with the coins) as well as watching him make words.

- Awesome!

This is an awesome game/educational tool. I have a 7 year old who does not like educational toys. I find him playing this at night in bed! His 9 year old sister also enjoys it. Can't wait for more software. It's the best buy we made for the holidays.
- Great Learning Game!
     By A7BVYF05DLLUM on 2003-12-26
Our Son hasn't stopped playing with his Leapster since he got it this Christmas morning! He received several games but seemed to love the Sponge Bob game the most. He especially enjoyed the coin game with the crane prize at the end. This is an excellent game and will be sure to please if purchased!
- Sponge Bob
     By A2DQKHQ4ZJ6RSB on 2005-09-04
Sponge Bob helps your child learn without even knowing it. It keeps there attention. It is good to work with your child so they get the most out of it.
- My 4 year old LOVES SpongeBob and this game!
     By A1P51WS79ZGZPM on 2004-01-03
He is able to operate this game just fine after being told how to pick levels once (and we input his name since he only knows the first two letters of his name by sight!)I am glad I purchased it for my son. I even tried it to see how it works and it is very educational (I don't even like SpongeBob much). My 9 year old likes to play it too (a little TOO easy for he and I though).
- Silly Sauce
     By A1G1SBEB82NDRU on 2007-03-10
My five-year-old son just received this game last week. He can not put it down. He especially loves the silly sauce game and the money. He has a deep fascination for numbers and money, so those games come "easily" to him. He'll be 6 in a couple of months.
I agree with the other posters that say this is not for a child under the age of 5, not if you want them to actually play and learn from the games and not just guess at them. Spongebob is a hit in this house!
- One of my kid's favorites
     By A1FCQI065T3HYH on 2008-01-14
We have a 4 year old and a 5 year old and they simply LOVE this game. They have enjoyed many Leapster games, but they love Songebob. The game is relatively easy for them, but challenging enough to entertain for long periods of time.
- SPONGEBOB IS A GOOD LEARNING GAME
     By A3CHUPAFTFYSF7 on 2004-12-31
It is fun! And most importantly educational. It has a game where you have to put the exact amount of money in the game slot. My kids like that part. They are 6 and 7 and ask me all the time if they can play their spongebob game, we are a two leapster family but they have to share their cartridges. Next year my youngest will want one too, I am sure, as she wants to play theirs, but she is just too little yet, another year she will be 4 so will check into getting her one of her own then...
- My nephew 2 1/2 years old - graduated
     By A1H8KXJ2UK45E4 on 2005-01-05
I got my nephew a spongebob and leapster for christmas. I asked my sister how he does? She told me he got so excited and was so thankful that I got him a leapster which he is only 2 and half years old. I was informed he is already graduated from the spongebob that is only for 5 to 8 years old. I would rate this for any child to use not just ability of age but under the limit age will be able to repeat and hear them as often as they can to build their intelliegent. I can't wait to get him more leapster. He's already asking for more leapster stuff. I must say he's a leaster freak and plays it all day long.
- Best game ever!

- A gift...

I bought this game as a gift for my grandson's 5th birthday. He is a huge SpongeBob fan. He really enjoys the game and is learning along the way. I was amazed at how quickly he picked up the concept learning about coins.
