  • Good Weather Radio - one incredibly annoying problem..

    By AM7BCX3ZCQ70V on 2004-12-05
Okay, as far as a basic weather radio, this unit is working fine. SAME technology helps me to avoid the miles-away-irreleveant alerts. The unit is easy to set up and use. Good reception and nice appearance.

One thing to keep in mind is that I had intended to use this thing as both a weather radio and a 'clock radio' for my bedside. Then the faults really emerge.

First, that #@!$% keyboard beep. Every time you press a key, it beeps - loudly - and you cannot turn it off. To do simple things, such as make the LCD backlight come-on, the thing beeps more than a George Carlin video being shown at prayer meetin'.

So forget touching the thing if someone is beeping...er.. sleeping in the room. So if you just want to turn on the clock light, for example, by pressing a key... it goes "BEEP!!!!" So forget using this as a 'clock radio' for your bed unless you sleep alone. And if you need to do something basic, like program a radio station, etc. get ready for a long series of "beep, beep, beep, beep, beep....aggghhh...beep beep" while you hit keys. Same goes if you want to scan radio stations.

Did anyone ever think about this during design?

  • A weather radio saved our lives.

    By A2QL3AISOKZCX3 on 2004-08-17
I purchased 2 of these to replace the Midlands I lost in a tornado on July 13, 2004. The old radio saved the lives of myself, our 5 yr old and 3 of our grandchildren. If the radio had not been gone off, we would likely be dead. I never would have looked out the back door in time to get us all in the basement before an F4 hit our home. We live in the country and I have always had a weather radio. I tell everyone I know to get weather radio .
This is a nice model and I like the AM/FM feature. The problem I continually have had with every radio is that we live in the middle of the coverage areas and don't get the best signal at times. I have solved this by putting a Chore Boy stainless steel scrub pad on the antenna. It definitely improves the reception and seems to do better that foil. Other than that I think this is the best one I have had.

  • Be notified when the news stations are notified...

    By AGYA5S5XM0GTL on 2005-09-03
I purchased this unit 6 months ago with the fear of "tornado season" coming. I live in an area where a tornado is likely with almost every storm. In past years, Easter weekend has been ruined by the destruction of houses in the path of a tornado.

We hear the alarm and listen to the weather service warning BEFORE the news stations can announce the warning on t.v.

The WR-300 has been great. The alarm is clearly heard by everyone throughout the house and the display gives a read out of the alert while the alarm is sounding. You can hear the local weather service with the touch of a button or press the AM/FM button and listen to local radio stations of your choice. The use of this radio is very simple. My kids know how to turn off the siren and how to press the weather radio button to listen to the verbal warning from the National Weather Service. The alarm is a great asset to have during night time hours.

The radio can be plugged in for everyday use and then when power is out for whatever reason, the backup batteries take over so that you can hear announcements and further weather warnings.

Many people have complained about the beeping while pressing the buttons. Yes, there is a beep but it is not that annoying. We do not do very much button pushing in the middle of the night and it has not bothered us.

There is a weekly test that can be a little annoying if you are asleep during the day. My husband is military and his schedule changes regularly, sometimes causing him to work mid-shift. When he is sleeping during the daytime hours, the alarm sounding during the weekly test can be disturbing but it is a small price to pay for safety. On the other side, the weekly test is a nice option. Each week we are assured that the radio is working and the alert will come through during an emergency.

This is a great item and wonderful purchase to make for yourself or a loved one. You really can not put a price on safety.

  • Nice SAME Technology Weatheradio

    By AVNJLT8IMKTSN on 2005-04-21
After having tried just about every SAME technology weatheradio out there, I found the WR-300 to be one of the better ones, and definitely the best of the Midland weatheradios to date.

One of the best features it has is that it allows you to disable the audiable alerts for every watch/warning except life threatening ones like tornado warning, or biological hazard warning, etc. Other brands and models will only allow you to disable the most harmless events. I do not wish to be alerted at 3am because of a severe thunderstorm warning, or tornado watch. With the WR-300, I won't be alerted unless there is actually a tornado warning.

The blue LED backlit LCD display is pretty sharp looking, too! There is a menu feature that allows you to continuously keep the blue backlighting on, although I think it would be too bright in a bedroom at night, especially if the WR-300 is right next to the bed on a nightstand.
Some people have complained about the beeps for every keypress, and I did not find that to bother me. Maybe a softer "click" sound for every keypress would be better. Also, others have reported that their WR-300 leaked audio when the WX is muted. I did not have this problem at all; it worked fine for me.

Things I really liked about the WR-300:

    1) Extensive audiable alert disable ability
    2) Form factor and relatively small size
    3) Blue backlit display
    4) 4-AA battery backup (instead of 9v transistor batt)
    5) Am/Fm/clock/alarm features
    6) Menu flexibility (although not that intuitive)

I gave the WR-300 a 4 instead of 5 star rating because of the following minor issues:

    1) No display of event(s) remaining time(s)
    2) Menu navigation and master alert disable/enable operation was not intuitive.
    3) No visual indication as to whether or not the master audible alert is enabled or disabled.

  • Versatile Radio

    By A1F1A0QQP2XVH5 on 2007-02-07
We bought this radio after the Tornadoes hit Florida in February in the middle of the night. That event was a serious reminder that a Hazards Radio can be as important to saving your life as a good smoke detector.

I looked at the WR-100 and the WR-300 and went with this unit. I believe the WR-300 is definitely worth the extra $$. Both have county-specific set-up which keeps you from getting woken up for alerts two counties away, but the WR-300 goes one step further and adds the capability to disable the audio alarm individually for some 30 or so specific alerts. For example, we diabled the Winter Weather items (since these are of little consequence in North Texas), as well as the Flood items since we live nowhere near a creak or other body of water. But we left the Tornado, Severe Thunderstorm, and Boil Water (?!) items audible-enabled.

This unit also has a Clock Radio with AM/FM (3 memory presets each) and a 9-minute snooze button.

These NOAA radios have come a long way, and this one is worth more than the price we paid for it.

  • Beware In Louisville, KY Area
    By A4XUYHAAKPR6E on 2006-05-24
I got one of these back in early April of this year. We had a couple of days of severe weather in the area. The unit would not alert when the NWS sent out alerts. I changed back and forth from "multi" county to "all" counties, but no alerts. I was listening to the alerts on another weather radio I have, and I don't believe they were broadcasting the data burst with the SAME info contained in the burst. I was only hearing the 1050khz tone. I contacted Midland via email to ask them if the unit responds to both the tone, and data burst. They replied without answering the question, and asked me to return the unit since they thought it was faulty. I contacted Amazaon about returning the unit, and had no problem. In fact they automatically shipped out another unit. However when I received the new unit and set it up, it would not respond to alerts either. I sent an email to the NWS office here in Louisville to see if someone there had the same unit and could give me some advice. I heard back from them today, and they said they had two of same units in their office which they could never get to alert! They did not say anything about the data burst and the tone signal, but I'm GUESSING that this unit does not respond to the 1050khz tone only, but needs the data burst also. I'm going to contact Midland again about this and see what they say.

Update...I contacted Midland and they said the unit does not respond to the 1050hz tone, but to the SAME data burst. I can only assume the NWS office wasn't transmitting the SAME info. We have had an outbreak of numerous severe thunderstorms today, along with tornado watches...the unit has worked flawlessly. So sorry for the low rating, but if for some reason your NWS office doesn't transmit the SAME data the unit won't alert you.

  • A quality unit with thoughtful design
    By A27F7B3PXZ0RVE on 2005-08-06
I really like the WR-300. It has a decent user interface, a very clear audio system, and lots of useful features. This is the unit to have by your bedside to wake you up in a crisis. It has a siren, plus blinking lights, plus a very loud and clear speaker for listening to voice announcements. You can't ignore warnings from this unit.

As another reviewer notes, the WR-300 is not really designed as a bedside entertainment radio. Buy something else for that function. The loud beep on every keypress is deliberate and important -- it is to help you work the unit in noisy conditions, as you might have to in a storm. That's appropriate design, in my opinion.

I bought one of these after Oxnard had a tidal wave warning that I only learned about hours after it had expired. I live on the flood plain, so tsunamis would be destructive. But with just a few minutes warning I could easily get into the high hills surrounding the basin. This box will give me that warning.

  • Great Weather Radio/Great Price on Amazon
    By A2GO9Y2MK9S0AX on 2004-12-06
I am really impressed with this weather radio! I had an older radio and every time there was an alert in my region the alarm would go off. We turned off the alarms and a tornado went 1/4 mile from our house and we never knew it. With this radio you set up your town(s) or area(s) you want alerts for. Then you can turn off some types of alerts (like avalanche alerts if you are not near a mountain) and let it do it's thing. Great to be able to have the alerts active but not be woken by river flooding 30 miles away (I live nowhere near a river).

  • NOAA Weather and Alert Radio
    By AZGMIV5UGFFHY on 2006-09-02
Not certain why folks are having difficulty entering SAME codes. They are more than readily available. The only thing you need to remember is that "0" is the first number. My work includes supporting NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations and the National Weather Service, this radio is perfect. Reception is excellent. Glad I read the reviews here first - did NOT waste my money on the Eton/Grundig radio. In fairness, Grundig makes good radios - shortwave at least. Midland WR-300 and the quick start are excellent. For those wanted more info on SAME codes, a better link is http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/nwrrcvr.htm as this is NOAA's Weather Radio site.

Do not confuse the requirement for SAME vs. FIPS. SAME uses the three digit state code and then the remainder of the code IS the FIPS code. Makes things easier to remember and enter. It's nice that Midland added a page in the back so you can write in all of the SAME codes and what they mean right in the manual.

Enjoy this radio. I know people working in the National Weather Service who have this on their desk, at work!

    SOLD!

  • Great emergency radio, with mediocre clock radio
    By A3B4JAH6827YGQ on 2005-08-19
I purchased this radio for the express purpose of monitoring emergency NOAA weather notifications, and for listening to local weather broadcasts. In this regard, it is a high performer, and truly does its job well, allowing full personal input of signal discrimination with the S.A.M.E. programing. The radio doubles as a bedside clock radio. While one might view this as a bonus, and while I should not reasonably expect this secondary feature to be a ratings consideration, I must rate the WR-300 downward in this regard, for the following reasons.
When all is said and done, between emergency notifications and passing tornadoes, the utility of a bedside clock radio surfaces as its more oft-used feature. I can't help note that clock radio technology is fully into its sixth decade, with all refinements having been standardized in even the cheapest radios for the last 30 or more years. One can reasonably expect Midland to incorporate every bit of such elementary radio architecture into its WR-300, but they didn't. The AM/PM indicator is preposterously small, and is almost impossible to read under any circumstances. It may not even be number 6 font! While its handy luminous panel may be optionally lit at all times, and is a move in the right direction for those who desire to see the face at all times, it cannot be dimmed, illuminating the entire room with a bright blue glow. Sadly, too, it can only be programed to one alarm. For those who like to awaken at a different times on different days, this is a serious oversight. Even a second analog switch for this would have been nice. One complaint I do not share with others is the one concerning the incessant beeping during program changes. As in most electronic devices, the repetitive beeps are buffered by simply holding the key down. And, the clock radio does have a snooze alarm, an innovation of the mid-1950s.

All complaints about the clock radio aside, the Midland WR-300 is a really nice emergency radio, which can save lives and get your attention. I cannot recommend it more for this.

    By A1DPK1NQAHV9D9 on 2007-01-11
After thorough research, I decided on this Midland. Extremely happy with the purchase. I set it up after aquiring the codes online, I plugged it in, added the codes, picked out the weather channel with the best reception and good to go! It worked great the first time a storm came thru! Wow...Had a tornado watch and severe thunderstorm warning after that and the unit performed well.
One word of advice....I added 6 county codes for use.....depending on where you live in your county, I would limit my county codes to the immediate counties that effect you......if you don't, trust me you could be up all night!

  • Great weather radio!
    By A2WHNWZ1DWZZTB on 2007-01-16
We've had this weather radio for about a year now, and love it. We bought this one as a present for our friends at the beach to keep up with coastal storms. It's reliable, programmable (so it won't wake you up for every inconsequential weather situation unless you want it to) & a "regular" radio, too! Well worth the money!

  • Great Item
    By A2Q3FTRQ32UVZ on 2007-01-13
I read a lot of reviews on different radios before I settled on this item and I believe the other reviews were accurate. This radio was easy to set up and get into operation and it has already worked by notifying us of a flood watch for our area. I'm very happy with it and very glad I took the time to read the reviews on Amazon to know which product to choose and which ones to stay away from. Keep the reviews coming.

  • Great Radio
    By A38K04MT5LR0JC on 2006-04-08
I am writing this during a significant outbreak of deadly weather. The unit has worked flawlessly and done everything I could ask a radio to do! The price is good too, for an overall excellent value.

  • Great Weather Radio
    By A3CK2ZIJ7FB710 on 2006-01-19
I've had a few different weather radios in the past and this one is the best by far. It's very easy to use and I love how you can program it to alert you for only certain counties. The alert itself isn't as annoying as some from older radios, but it's still loud enough to get your attention. The watch/warning/advisory lights are also great because they stay on until the alerts expire. It's also very compact and sleek and doesn't take up much room at all.

  • EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!!!!
    By A1BGEBB83WO5KH on 2005-04-22
The Midland WR-300 Weather Radio is EXACTLY what I wanted! We recently moved out of town (and unfortunately, away from the tornado sirens). This radio is PERFECT! We have it set to stay silent until a warning of some kind is for our county, then it sounds a siren (which DOES wake you up!), followed by a voice broadcast of what the warning is and how long it is in effect for. We have it set up for our county only, but you can easily program it to sound alerts for surrounding counties as well. Another nice feature is being able to hear our area's forecast anytime, at the touch of a button. I feel much safer now that we have this product to wake us up and warn us of approaching danger...love it, love it, love it!

  • Piece of CAKE!!!
    By AE1SD7MT9MP51 on 2005-08-09
I'd like to start off by telling everyone, I live on top a mountain in a mobile home and was preparred to purchase the extra anteanna if needed. I received the box and promptly opened and look at the unit. So far so good. I decided to get some lunch before tackling the manual. 3 days later, I figured it was time to get this thing up to see if it worked. Booted up the computer, turned the unit on (after installing the batteries) The manual was more intimidating than the actual process. Within 15 minutes I had it up, programmed coded and working. AND I DID NOT need the extra anteanna. Works great. NOTE**put it in a place where the cats can't step on the top in the middle of the night-scared the bejesus out of us.

  • I like it
    By A1FHIVXO4VT538 on 2005-07-11
It does what I wanted. Allows you to receive alerts by county and to disable alerts you don't want to hear. For example if you don't want to hear the alarm go off every time there is a thunder storm waring you can turn it off. Some alerts you can not shut off like Tornado Warning, Hurricane Warning, the big ones.

  • Simply a great product
    By A2AFJPZMB9IASJ on 2007-02-28
This weather-alert radio is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. It's attractive, functions exactly as advertised and is a good value.

The complaints of other reviewers have ranged from the radio being difficult to program, the quality of the speakers, the unit not functioning very well as a clock-radio, and the loud beep that sounds every time a button is pressed.

I found programming the radio wasn't difficult at all. To be sure, you have to carefully read the instruction manual, but the instructions are clear and concise and take you through the process step-by-step. Not including the time it took to read the manual, I had the radio programmed in about 5 minutes.

As for the quality of the speakers, well, it's a small clock-radio. We're not talking stereo surround sound here, but we're not expecting that, either. Bottom line, the speakers are just fine and deliver more-than acceptable sound.

I have no complaints with the unit functioning as a clock-radio, either. The time display isn't terribly large, but that's because most of the clock-face real estate is taken up by whatever warning message is being displayed. The main function of the radio, after all, is to alert you to approaching danger. At night, you can choose to have the display backlit continuously so you can see the time.

The radio has three memory presets for FM stations and three more for AM stations. When you set an alarm time, the radio turns on at the assigned time, just as you'd expect. There's also a snooze button. There aren't any bells and whistles, but again, it's a weather-alert radio that doubles as a clock-radio -- not vice versa.

Yes, the unit does beep every time a key is pressed. I don't find it particularly bothersome, but if you do, you can silence the beeps when you're programming it by turning off the volume/power switch on the side of the radio. You can then program to your heart's content without a single beep. Just remember to turn the switch back on when you're done so the weather-alert function will work.

Finding the S.A.M.E. county codes on the Internet was easy and it was simple to program the ones into the unit that I'm interested in. Sure enough, each time there's been a weather event, the unit has gone off and displayed what's happening. The radio also turns on and broadcasts the appropriate NOAA warning. You can filter the types of warnings you receive in various manners and you can also choose whether or not to have the radio's siren alert you, as well. There are even two volume levels for the siren.

All in all, this is a great product. If you're concerned about the weather and your safety, you won't regret this purchase.

  • Great gift
    By A1WUBWXHWS7WLY on 2006-01-19
I ordered this weather alert radio as a gift for my brother-in-law, who is not near any sort of civil alert siren. I performed the setup, which seemed relatively uncomplicated. The display is clear. Sounds quality was very good for this type of appliance. He is in a valley at the margins of good reception, but it seems to pull in the designated station clearly. I would not recommend this radio as a primary clock-radio for next to the bed, but would recommend one in the bedroom. I highly recommend that you set up any radio of this type to ignore ALL alerts that you do not care about (tests, thunderstorm watches, flash flood watches, etc.) If you do not do this, the radio will "cry wolf" and you will be apt to turn down the alert, which defeats the purpose. This radio also has the ability to have external alerts, such as attached strobes or horns, so it would be very good for the hard of hearing or disabled. I would recommend every household that isn't directly underneath a civil alert siren have this radio or one just like it.

  • Smart little radio
    By ATXKH206MK8CZ on 2007-01-12
This a good smart little radio with good sensitivity to the NOAA weather stations. You can also listen to your favorite am/fm radio station without missing weather alerts. I keep mine on all of the time during huricane season.

  • Great Weather Radio
    By on 2003-09-14
I go this radio as a gift. I've had it for about two weeks and it great. Its got the Weather Alert feature, AM/FM, Alarm Clock, Date and Time. It's what I was looking for. I put in on my kitchen counter, and it's perfect!

    Pros-

    - Very easy to program.
    - Weather Alerts
    - Real cool blue backlit display.
    - You can remove unwanted alerts.
    - Date, Time and Alarm Clock.
    - Digital AM/FM Radio.

    Cons -

    - The only thing is that I would like the AM/FM Icons to be a little big bigger on the display.

    Overall -
I am here in Florida and we do get alot of Thunderstorms so for me this is a perfect gift, I would recommend to anyone.

  • Completely customizeable.
    By A2PITNOMJZ6SZZ on 2006-05-03
We rarely use our old weather radio, because like the boy who cried wolf, its perpetually sounding the alarm because there MIGHT be a thunderstorm 30 miles away. But with the SAME technology, I was able to program this to only go off on warnings that affect our area. For watches, it just lights up and puts a text warning - no waking up for things that haven't yet reached the emergency level.

As others have noted, it'd be nice if there was more control over the light level, and the time could be larger. But these are minor considerations. I'm buying another radio for my office.

  • Very good weather radio for the price
    By A3U3X4YWI73BTJ on 2004-07-29
The SAME function is a somewhat annoying to get started but it is well worth it. No getting woken up for thunderstorms two counties away. It could be easier to use. Whe you set it up, you need to read the manual to get all the features going so relax and make the time to do it. All in all, it does what it says it does and I have had mine for 3 months now with no problems.

The one thing I would really like would be a way to clear the expired alerts.

I really like having an intelligent clock radio that can alert me to hazards.

  • Great for weather, but that's about it.
    By A21X9WZQLTBQ27 on 2007-01-05
Midland knows how to put together a fantastic weather radio. They aren't so good at alarm clock radios. I cannot understand why Midland advertises this as a clock/weather radio when basic stuff like a backlit clock were not included. On top of that, the time display is so tiny you have to be within 2 feet of the radio even in daylight. Plus, the radio speaker is pretty awful. And, the silly thing beeps (loudly) everytime you push a button. You know what, though? I had read all of those complaints in other Amazon reviews and bought it anyway...mainly because Midland rocks at weather radios. I figured the complaints were overstated.

Regarding the weather radio, this one does not disappoint. It's great. I just underestimated how much the negative aspects were going to annoy me. They're annoying...big time. My recommendation is to buy a Midland weather radio to keep on your dresser and a cheap clock radio to keep by your bed. Don't buy this one for both all in one. Consider yourself warned.

  • Good to have...BUT...
    By A2KJLQV2M8TH5I on 2007-01-10
I purchased three of these for gifts and I cautioned everyone about how complicated programing the monitor can be. It took me a good two hours to do this. At the same time, I was worried about the alert siren going off and no one knowing how to turn it off! Since I set mine up, we've had several alert sirens go off in the early early morning. It was good to wake up and listen to what was going on - especially because one of the alerts was a notice of an earthquake that produced a very small tsunami effect that affected our harbored boats and shoreline. I like receiving warnings and alerts as soon as the NOAA issues them and it outweights the complexity of programming the monitor. For the price, peace of mind and features - this is an pretty good product.

  • VERY Pleased!
    By AZSR47448ZH6Z on 2007-02-24
Although we've only had this for a short time, I am very impressed! I didn't find it at all difficult to program. The "beeps" are a bit annoying, but once set up I don't see when this would be a continous problem. We got this strictly for the weather, etc. alert monitor, NOT for the clock/radio features, that's just an added bonus. It's nice to have the local weather just a push button away, and also to get the heads up for the severe weather in the area. The siren when placed on HIGH, is loud enough to raise the dead! Which is good, since my husband is hard of hearing AND our home is large. Our power gets knocked out quite often, since we live out in the country. This will let us know exactly what's going on with the weather, etc., since it is backed up with 4 AA batteries (not included). The threat of tornando's is our MAIN concern, if we have just 5 minutes notice, it may be a just enough time needed to get to safety. After checking different places, this was the best price here on Amazon. You can't go wrong with the price and the FREE shipping. I'm very happy with our choice and plan to purchase more for gifts.

  • Avoid this Product!
    By A34G7T5UZPAP4R on 2003-11-27
I purchased this product and I had to return it the next day. I then received a replacement radio with the same technical issue: The weather radio would not turn off even when in the "silent" mode.

It may be possible that the radio issues the weather warnings, etc., but who wants to listen to the radio going 24 hours a day? When the radio is placed in the silent/mute mode you can hear a weak NOAA signal in the background. Obviously this radio was poorly engineered, constructed incorrectly, or had defective parts placed in the unit.

Why would you want to pay money for this radio only to put a towel on it so you can't hear it? Save you money!

I would recommend the WX500 Uniden weather radio (although it does not have AM/FM) or the hand-held Midland 74-250 with SAME. It is my hope that Uniden stays in the weather radio market, as their WX500 is the best base weather radio I've ever had.

  • A Good Value

After reading the previous reviews for this product, I was a bit weary. However, after the purchase, I was quite impressed. The controls work fine, even in "silent" mode. No faint broadcasts. I wonder if that person was too close to the transmitter?? Radio controls are nice and easy to program. Reception is very good with minimal distortion on all bands. The couple of things I did notice that I would prefer would be that the backlight stay on just a bit longer, 4 seconds on mine. The other would be to display the alert's effective time. That time is not displayed, but the alert light stays lit for the effective time. All in all, a very good price to pay for safety!

  • Good machine

I am satisfied with this machine: it is easy to use, the user's instructions are clear. In addition to the SAME technology you can select what type of event (Tornado watch, fire warning, etc) will sound: it is called "defeat alarm". For example, I set the alarm not to sound for a tornado watch and this feature is very practicle.
It is true that there is a beep each time you touch a button, so do not use it as a waker or if someone sleeps in the same room as you!
