Power Yoga - Total Body Workoutx$7.99

(204 reviews)

Best Price: $7.99

Power yoga "demands your attention," says instructor Rodney Yee. He leads a challenging, constantly progressing series of poses, one flowing into the next, integrating breath, movement, tension, and relaxation. The poses include Sun Salutation, standing poses, forward bends, back bends, twists, and arm balances. The first poses are fairly easy, and with each repetition of the series, Yee adds on more difficult movements, extending the series without pausing. You're encouraged to do as much of the series that fits your level, up to the entire 65-minute workout if you're an experienced yoga practitioner. Although you can begin at any level, some familiarity with yoga is recommended. The Hawaiian setting is gorgeous and inspiring. This is an excellent yoga workout that you can grow with, adding on more as you get stronger. --Joan Price MPN: 1301 - UPC: 029956011304

  • A wonderful workout

    By A15MHXG5FZYSD on 2004-03-23
I have been practicing yoga regularly for about three years, and found this dvd to be a wonderful addition to my practice. Most of the poses are simple enough so that they can be attained by beginners, however, the length of the practice and the quantity of standing poses makes for a vigorous workout. This one is not for everyone however, I was a professional athlete and continue to stay in good shape, and I found myself (after the first couple of practices) to really feel the workout in my back. If you have not done a lot of yoga, you may want to start with a less strenuous tape, however if you like to feel a deep stretch and don't mind a few sore muscles, this is the yoga tape for you.

  • Rod Yee does it again!

    By A118DD1BQQX1WX on 2004-02-08
I own three of Yee's DVDs (Power Yoga the complete Workout, Yoga for Athletes, and this one), and Yee has not let me down yet. Each DVD is a little better than the last. This one may be his best yet. I think this DVD is a great intermediate level workout. The level of poses is not extremely complex, but he gives you a complete body workout in about 63 minutes. Those of you familiar with Yee's "Power Yoga the complete workout" will note that this work out goes 60+ minutes straight, versus breaking up the workout into three types (stamina, strength, and flexibility). This workout will build endurance for sure. I like how this DVD is a little less rushed than the first Power Yoga DVD. The poses are held longer, and are slightly more difficult than the first DVD, but the pace is slower. In this DVD you may feel less rushed than you did in the previous Power Yoga DVD with moving from one pose to the next. If you are new to Yoga, this may be tough for you. Although these poses may or may not be difficult for everyone, the sequence and the amount of time you spend doing them may be. I would suggest this tape for anyone looking to establish an at home practice who has practiced for at least 6 months or better, and who wants to build endurance. As I stated before Rod Yee comes through yet again with another great yoga DVD.

  • Great Weight-Loss Tool

    By A3NCIN6TNL0MGA on 2005-09-30
My primary reasons for taking up yoga were to lose weight, reallign my back, increase flexibility, and achieve more relaxed breathing. Yee's Total Body Workout, a little over an hour, achieves all my goals. First, let me say you need to have about six months of basic yoga in order to do these moves and you probably can't be more than thirty pounds overweight; many of the moves require a body that is reasonably muscular. I've got six months of yoga and thirty years of bodybuilding (both a blessing and a curse) behind me so I can do 90% of the moves. Secondly, you should invest in a thick yoga mat; they go for about forty dollars and if you sweat a lot like I do, place a beach towel over the mat so you don't slip. The only other piece of equipment you might need is a ten-dollar strap or just a belt for some of the lying leg stretches.

I like Yee's screen persona. He is authentic, direct, and clear. He spares you New Age pretentiousness, self-aggrandizement, and any other affectations.

The workout is vigorous and fast-paced. For the first five minutes, a warm-up period, you think you're going to get off with an easy workout but within twenty minutes you're sopping with sweat. The first couple of times you might just have to figure out what Yee is doing. By the third workout, you should be able to follow along seamlessly. It's worth the work. You'll burn between 500-700 calories per workout; that's over a pound of fat a week or fifty-two pounds a year.

On a more subtle note, I've noticed my breathing is more relaxed throughout the day and there appears to be a connection between relaxed breathing and less consumption of food. I've always been cursed with a voracious appetite, and while my daily hour of yoga hasn't totally cured it, my hungers are lower, I'd say 10% less than without the yoga.

Also with bodybuilding and cardio at the gym, I come home exhausted and must nap for a good hour before I can do anything productive. With yoga, I don't need a nap. I'm already energized.

It's important to change your yoga workouts so you don't go stale. I'd recommend checking out the Bryan Kest DVDs, especially his Power Yoga, which has three workouts on one DVD.

  • Like this quite a bit, with reservations

    By A3C5RLFM1KWB6S on 2004-08-23
I'm a moderately experienced Ashtanga yoga practitioner and I bought this DVD hoping it would offer a slightly less strenuous Vinyasa practice I could do at home to supplement my yoga classes. On the whole I wasn't disappointed. The flow of poses is well composed and definitely offers an aerobic benefit in addition to the strengthening and calming effects typical of yoga. I've done the whole sequence about fifteen times and have always felt relaxed and energized afterwards. The DVD's hour-long time span is enough to provide a challenge for more experienced practitioners but not too daunting for beginners. That said, this might not be the right choice for a complete novice as Yee doesn't offer comprehensive explanations of each pose, or of how to move from one pose to the next.

I would have liked him to spend a bit more time on the subtleties of each asana, for example, how should the feet connect with the ground in poses like Downward Dog and Mountain Pose, and where should the gaze be directed? Also, what about mudras and breathing in each posture? Additionally, I think insufficient information is provided on modifying poses...again, if you're a complete beginner you may want to start with something more basic.

Although I really like Yee's soothing intonations as he guides one through the practice, I simply couldn't stand the synthetic New Age style music in the background. I'm not averse to New Age sounds per se but I have to work hard to block out the soundtrack on this DVD. I know this is a minor concern but initially it impaired my enjoyment of the practice.

Even if you're primarily interested in the physical benefits of yoga over its spiritual and philosophical components (and if you don't have access to hands-on yoga instruction) I recommend supplementing this DVD with a book such as Iyengar's "Light on Yoga", which offers very detailed explanations of each pose and its effects on both the external and internal bodies.

  • One of my favorites!

    By on 2003-09-14
I purchased this video without reading any reviews. (Couldn't find any) and initially felt like the previous reviewer that it looked boring but I did the whole tape and it's great! It starts out slow and then builds up to where you are sweating and feeling the workout throughout your body. His routine is different in his sun salutations which was a nice surprise because if you've done them enough they can be so predictable. The variety was welcome. Also the floor work was different by moving from one stretch to another rather quickly but afterwards you feel loosened up, strenghtened and relaxed. The overall mood of the tape was calming even though you are working hard and the scenery is spectacular! I think Rodney Yee improves with each new tape he does. His earlier ones were so fast during the sun salutations that I had lower back problems afterwards but this one is at a much better pace.

  • Not for beginners
    By A3RPIWCD656PMH on 2005-02-18
I've never really done Yoga before, but I'm in very good shape and exercise regularly. I was able to get through the entire exercise without any problem. However, it is about 60 minutes and gets a little boring. The menu doesn't offer any chapters to choose from so you have to forward past the things you don't want to do which gets annoying. What I didn't like about Total Body Workout was there was not any instruction on how to do the moves correctly. I really had no idea what Rodney was talking about and he uses words for body parts that I don't even know where or what they are. I also found that doing this DVD with out proper instructions can be very dangerous for your lower back. After doing the workout a couple of times my lower back was very sore. I've had back problems before so I'm weary of doing this workout more until I learn how to do the all the moves properly. Overall, it's a pretty good workout, but I would not recommend it for beginners.

  • My favorite yoga DVD by far
    By A33YVOOMT6V3IP on 2006-04-21
I have been using this DVD regularly for 4 months or so. I do it 1st thing in the morning so the 1st 10 minute warm up session is perfect to wake you up and get you going. Rodney then escalates to a more demanding yet gentle and relaxing series that get you sweating and make your muscles both stretch and work out. When you are tired enough, by minute 30 or so, he then takes you to the floor in a series of back bends that are still quite demanding but allow your heart rate to drop.
Finally there are about 20 minutes of stretching that will leave you feeling calmed, relaxed, energized and full of peace.
After doing this for a month or so your legs and arms are lean and defined, your waist is smaller and you find it easier to sleep at night and cope with every day's problems.
Haven't got this from any other yoga DVD and I own about 6 of them. I recommend this for anybody with some yoga experience.

  • Good Power Yoga Workout - EXCELLENT Quality
    By on 2003-12-28
I purchased this dvd after reading several reviews. I was looking for a challenging workout, as I've been practicing yoga for about 5 years now. I've been taking ashtanga classes about once a week and going to bikrams classes on and off so I think I have a pretty good experience level. This dvd definitely wasn't one of the most challenging workouts I've done but it was excellent for a dvd. I read the other reviews for this one and I think there is something to be said if you are a beginner. Most yoga dvds are out to try and create a workout for everyone so they do gear towards beginners more by having extra instruction and guidance. I don't think this is the case with this workout, it's really more for intermediate levels. You have to have some sense of proper alignment and where you are at in your practice. I think if I had tried this when I first began I could have gotten hurt because I didn't know how much to push. I really liked the fact that this workout was over an hour, most yoga dvds are about a half an hour, barely enough to really get a workout. I also found that I was incredibly relaxed after this workout. I did this right before going to work and I felt fantastic for the rest of the day. I'd recommend this to anyone except the absolute beginner, it's a must for your collection!

  • Well worth the money...
    By on 2004-01-01
I have been doing yoga regularly for a little over a year now, and I seem to be drawn to Gaiam's releases. Before buying this DVD, my favorite was Rodney Yee's Power Yoga for strength, stamina, and flexibility. Although I still practice with that program, this is now my new favorite. I think that the folks at Gaiam may have read the reviews of Yee's last power yoga dvd- there are many changes in this new format which make for a wonderful practice. In contrast to the former, which is three twenty minute practices, this dvd is a full hour workout. Because of this, there is no warmup/cooldown repitition, and anyone (myself included) is more likely to complete an hour workout (with this dvd), as opposed to three separate workouts. In addition, I have found that Yee's style in this practice is slightly slower, there is more detailed instruction, and, on the technical side, they do a better job of keeping the audio and video in sync. This is quite a workout which becomes easier with time. I get discouraged with people who say that they give up quickly because it's too hard, as well as with those that say it was too easy. The truth is- if it's difficult for you, the strength and stamina will come in time. Patience, not immediate graitification, is what yoga is about. If you find it very easy- you're either more advanced than this practice or, more likely, not performing the poses correctly. I have often found that the practices that are initially easy for me become more difficult over time as I come closer to getting the proper allignment. Regardless, I highly recommend both of Yee's power yoga releases. I have greatly benefited from making them a part of my daily life.

  • Aerobics & Yoga? PLEASE!!!
    By on 2004-07-25
Having practicing yoga for years (not only the exercises, but also the philosophy), I didn't care for this DVD at all. IF you want an aerobics DVD, then by all means get it! I felt the tape lacked in safety (especially when it comes to your back, and DEFINITY NOT for anyone who's ever had back problems.) The warnings are occasionally there, but are usually seem to have been throw in as an afterthought, and at times after doing something that could have caused serious problems. It also lacks the basic principals of yoga & seems to have used to "Yoga" name and a few poses (which are not executed correctly) to promote an aerobics programs that I feel lacks in safety & in common sense health principals... IF you are interested in Yoga, or even really in your health, this DVD is NOT for you! I'd strongly recommend either viewing Patricia Patrick's shows on PBS,buying her tapes which are available through Amazon.com "Priscillas Yoga Maintenance Routine" and "Ready,Set,Stretch" , or waiting for her DVDs to come out very soon!!!

I have used this video and was seriously unimpressed... IF you want a cross between yoga and aerobics, try some Tai Chi - you'll get better results and I believe will be a lot safer.. some of the 'bouncing' in this video can do serious harm to people IMHO.

  • Semi good workout, and BORING
    By A1JDHCP9W8UYHX on 2005-12-10
The workout is performed on a cliff overlooking a scenic Hawaiian (?) coast, but so what! Overall, a decent workout at times, but BORING! Yee gives few alternatives to his postures for different level students, and gives instructions in a dull monotone voice. I'll admit to being somewhat biased in that my main Yoga video for the past seven years has been Bryan Kest Power Yoga 1 (probably 500+ times), and I keep trying other power Yoga videos to see if any can match Kest's workout, and Yee's does not cut it. For example:

    - In general Kest holds his poses longer, which I think is a shortcoming of most all other power Yoga videos I've tried.
    - Like Kest, Yee does many upward dog poses followed by downward dog, but Yee does not give the option of a pushup during the transition which Kest always does (this is "power Yoga" isn't it?).
    - Yee never mentions the importance of extending your spine when raising or lowering your straight back from/to a standing position which Kest always emphasizes.
    - Yee only does two lame abdominal exercises (lying on back and raising straight legs and upper torso a slight amount) which he only holds for about 5 seconds. In contrast Kest's Power Yoga 1 does a similar exercise except the legs and torso are raised much higher and for a much longer time (and you get a good workout).
    - Yee does the back-bend "upward bow" three times, a difficult pose (which I cannot do), and I see no reason for so many repetitions.
    - Yee does almost no talking besides the basic directions, in contrast Kest is always talking about different pose variations, importance of breathing, proper feet/hand placement and life philosophy (which some think is corny, but I like it).

  • Comprehensive but Boring
    By A1AV8GAOH131O4 on 2006-04-12
I love it when a power yoga workout truly uses interesting combinations of hard standing poses to truly work the entire body in a non-linear manner. This unfortunately is not the case with Rodney Yee. Yee masks his lack of practical innovation with bland repetition and overly stylized movements indicative of a person who has tried hard to bring show off dance moves to yoga. It is easy to create a workout where I do A, B poses, then A, B, C poses, then A, B, C, D poses, etc. This kills time and creates the illusion of physical transformation through variation on a theme. There is no question when I do Brian Kest or Baron Baptiste that I truly feel worked out. I did Yee's Power Yoga for a week, grew bored with it, then placed it at the bottom of my Power Yoga DVD pile. Even though he is somewhat comprehensive with back bends, plow poses, and upturned bow, his introduction is essentially a time killer of ineffectual gesturing and movements which do very little to stimulate the body. I will say this is Yee's best DVD. At least he's not insulting my intelligence as he has on virtually every other workout of his that I own. For power yoga, if you want to feel strong, sweaty, and energized, Yoga Zone, Brian Kest and Baron Baptiste blow Yee away. This phenomenon proves that being a show off and making a million products does not mean quality is part of the consumer equation.

  • Very strenous video
    By A1G9Y7H7TSW4YX on 2004-01-07
I bought this video in November of 2003. I have only been doing Yoga for almost a year. It is challenging and I cannot do all the poses, especially the titibasana balancing pose but I have learned, over time to do the crane.
Lots of up dog down dogs. It also starts off slow which lets you build up steam and warm-up. I love Rodney Yee.He is cool!

  • Road to Recovery
    By A2N7Y8PAQ8ELFD on 2004-04-21
I have yet to finish the video, because after 25 minutes I'm pooped, but so far I love it. I think it's an awesome workout and after 2 weeks I've definitely toned up a bit already. I do a little every day, as Rodney Yee says in his DVD interview. After only one day, I felt soooo much better (I've been dealing with increasing joint pain and fatigue despite getting regular body work, napping and eating a nourishing diet). I can't believe how much more energy I have. I feel at least 5 years younger. I could kiss Rodney Yee. I would recommend this video to people who've done yoga classes in the past because my previous experience helps me know what he is doing better than if I were just trying to copy his poses by looking at them. It's hard to watch carefully when you're in most of the poses!

  • It's pretty, it's a nice workout, but it's not the best DVD
    By AOS27BWTGEYPW on 2005-01-25
If you're looking for something pretty, in this DVD Rodney Yee performs his workout in a beautiful, idyllic setting. But it isn't really for beginners. Overall, this whole workout is more for those at an intermediate/advanced level of yoga.

The DVD doesn't really take advantage of the DVD features. There are some different "pieces" of the workout, but really the long workout is just divided into a few chunks.

Each section of the workout gradually increases in intensity. When the poses get too hard for you, you can skip forward to the next section of the workout and continue. It's kind of frustrating, though, because you don't really know what he'll be doing next or if the move will be too difficult for you.

His workout is nice, and you can see your progress as you are gradually able to perform the whole workout. However, you can also take the guesswork out of your yoga practice and get a DVD specifically for your level of difficulty.

I myself really only use this DVD when I need a break from Brian Kest's excellent Power Yoga DVD which offers 3 clearly differentiated workouts. Then I can choose a different workout for how my body feels on a given day.

  • A challenge, but definitely not good for beginners.
    By A3AHDR4F2J7YXX on 2004-10-29
This one-hour routine is definitely a challenge. It is not for beginners. You must know the poses already and know how to modify if you can't do them like the instructor. I usually don't like Power Yoga, but my sister let me borrow it because she liked it. I like the flow speed and long holding of the poses, but Rodney Yee doesn't give enough of a pause between the sun salutations to witness. I was challenged by the back bends, and did a couple rounds, but I had to back off at the end. I was very warmed up and flexible and learned slight adjustments to put myself further into the pose. I was not real impressed with the DVD menu selection; you pretty much just run it from beginning to end. The scenery and music were lovely. I wouldn't use this DVD a lot, but it would be a nice one when you have a high energy level and you're ready for the challenge.

After using this DVD on several occassions I decided this is really a 5 star!!! Amazon won't let you change the rating once your set it. Definetly not for beginners, but fantastic if you know the basics!!!

  • Good speed, great instruction!
    By on 2004-03-09
While other reviewers may have found this workout too fast, I like the speed of this DVD. It's similar to the speed of transitions in other power yoga videos and ashtanga yoga classes I've taken. I also think this is a great workout for new (but not brand new) yogis. I've been practicing yoga for about 6 months, and I find the sun salutations at the beginning make me break a sweat. During the remainder of the workout, I have time to get into each pose, focus on it for a few breaths, and then move to the next pose.

I also LOVE the level of detail Rodney Yee gives for each pose. It's really easy to do poses wrong when you learn from a video, because there's no one to correct you, but Rodney Yee gives great instructions throughout the workout. He also consistently tells you when to breathe, which is key in yoga.

The only reservation I have about this is the overly-formal instructor voice-over. While some people may like this format (so there's no instructor talking, chatting, and joking while demonstrating the poses), I find it disconcerting to have a disembodied voice tell me to "bring your sacrum to your pelvis." ... My what? I had to look up sacrum to figure out what he was talking about, and even after I did that I couldn't figure out how to bring it closer to my pelvis. A few less formal tips would be helpful. Also, I usually like instructors' chattiness, because it gives me the illusion that other people are doing yoga with me. I definitely miss that in this DVD.

Overall, though, this is a great DVD, and a good workout for the near-beginner.

  • Nice ending stretch
    By A3T42VNJAVHWJX on 2005-11-03
This is a great power yoga workout with a nice, long stretch sequence at the end. It totals about 1 hour and the last 20-25 minutes is all stretch (forward bend, twist, cobbler, etc.)

If you're looking for a really intense power yoga workout, this is probably not for you. You might want to try the Bryan Kest workouts. If you are looking for a really good, smooth flow with some good power vinyasas, then I recommend this one. It starts off very slowly and gradually progresses into more challenging vinyasas, and as I said, ends with a good stretch. I feel very energized after doing this workout.

The only draw back to this DVD, and the reason for only 4 stars, is Rodney's voice. His cues are great and easy to follow, his voice is just a little loud compaired to the music and not at all soothing. He does not have the soft, flowing voice that a lot of instructors have. This just makes for a little less relaxing workout.

    Overall, a very good video.

  • Definitely challenging for beginners.
    By A2YHSZ5GGR4VIJ on 2006-04-03
I bought this as my first yoga video. DON'T buy this as your first yoga video.

Don't get me wrong, it provides an EXCELLENT workout. But, as many other reviewers noted, it moves very quickly and it is hard to follow if you are unfamiliar with the poses. Even after watching it a few times, I still find myself pausing every 10 minutes or so to catch my breath, grab a drink of water, move the mat back into place and catch up to the position that he's in.

If you want to get a great workout and you feel pretty comfortable with your level of yoga knowledge, you'll like this tape. If you're just starting out, try something else.

  • Boring, annoying, and useless
    By A2LRPKXKG161AV on 2004-12-14
Admittedly I have very little experience with yoga, but this DVD bored me to tears. Down, up, down, up, the same motions repeated forty-fold over at a time, then going to two other motions... repeat 40 times there as well. End with a few really bizarre and painful back bends. This was bad enough, but at least I was sweating. Finally, though, I had to give up on this after playing it 3 times because I couldn't stand Rodney's bodalicious surfer-dude voice. That and the fact that he uses the word "pubis" CONSTANTLY. I mean, pick another word for it. Any word. Yuck.

  • Not 5 stars ONLY because...
    By A3IWYF3LDWJ0R7 on 2004-12-30
I really love this DVD. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the mention of arm balances, and it turned out that there were none. Or maybe there were, but none that I consider to be arm balances... Anyway, I have been doing yoga off and on for about a year. Each time I stop and start, I can pretty much get back into it without a problem. I do the MTV Yoga DVD (which is also awesome; check it out). Rodney Yee's Power Yoga is definitely faster than any yoga I have ever done, and I love that. I was looking for Power Yoga and I found it. I don't know if someone who is exceptionally advanced would benefit from this DVD, but for the intermediate level it's a gem. By the way, the backbends are crazy!...but in a good way:) You'll be sore the next day, but if you keep it up, you'll be toned and strong in a very short amount of time.

  • The effect of Power Yoga on your body is amazing!
    By AX6FNN4K5DCXS on 2006-11-29
Prior to this DVD, my only exposure to Yoga was Rodney Yee's AM Yoga DVD which was good for calming the mind and relaxation but I needed something more. I've been using this DVD for about 3 weeks and I've already seen amazing results. Specifically, I have seen the following improvements:

    1) Flexibility - Very much improved. Jump right out of bed in the morning with no tightness or creaking muscles.
    2) Strength - I'm amazed at how you strenghten your core, chest, shoulders, back and legs. I have only been to the gym once in 3 weeks but my muscle tone has improved. This workout strenghtens EVERY part of your body.
    3) Focus and Concentration - The poses in this DVD, especially Warrior 2, test your ability to focus and concentrate. I have definitely improved in this area by doing the poses.
    4) Posture - Allows you to achieve and maintain a proper posture
    5) Breathing - This workout improves breathing ability and really makes you feel great after a workout.
    6) Improves recovery time after playing sports
    7) Releases anxiety and tension

After seeing these benefits after only 3 weeks, I imagine that I will continue working out to this DVD well into the future. I strongly encourage you to buy this DVD! You'll love the results!

  • This is easy if you've take 1 or 2 yoga classes before.
    By A1DVTSHT079VWM on 2003-12-28
I bought this on a whim, not knowing if this would be beyond my ability. I've only taken a few yoga classes, so I understand and am able to do basic poses, like downward-facing dog, triangle and warrier, but I'm no expert (no handstands). I was able to follow Rodney Yee very easily. That's really saying something as I am a year past a major knee surgery; while capable, I am very fragile and careful with my knee. After a three days of doing this video, I felt really strong throughout my upper and lower body. I also moved better than I have in years. Go on, buy it, you'll feel better!

  • I don't like power yoga
    By A39CK0T4RL96DS on 2004-09-24
Is this a aerobic good work out that uses yoga moves? Yes. But, I wanted a yoga DVD that was more focused on stretching, balance, and improving poses. When I want to do aerobics, I go to the YMCA. This tape is long (60 some minutes), but really needs to be longer to allow full exploration of the poses and movements and should be presented in chapters for more flexible workouts. I don't use it and am selling it at my son's school carnival.

  • Wonderful and challenging workout from Rodney
    By A3C6CZC2JP67VK on 2006-02-13
I purchased this video without knowing what to expect. It is a longer workout but its pace and style is nothing like the Power Yoga for beginners at all. It has its merits for those who have done the AM/PM Yoga and the Beginner one. This is a good one to get once you have gotten the hang of the other DVDs.

Rodney Yee has a careful, meditative style that is very relaxing. He weaves standing poses into the vinyasa flow (somewhat like Total Yoga - Fire) so that you really maintain heat and deep breathing while doing the deeper stretches. It starts out slow and then builds up to where you are sweating and feeling the workout throughout your body. His routine is different in his sun salutations which was a nice surprise because if you've done them enough they can be so predictable. The variety was welcome. Also the floor work was different by moving from one stretch to another rather quickly but afterwards you feel loosened up, strengthened and relaxed. This session feels very natural, challenging and energizing you without exhausting any single part of the body. Because of Rodney's precision and calmer pace, you are able to challenge yourself in a particularly relaxing atmosphere. As Baron Baptiste says, our stress-relievers can be a little bit stressful, and Rodney does a good job of reducing the hyped-up atmosphere that can infiltrate some power yoga videos.

After a few days of doing this video, I felt really strong throughout my upper and lower body. I also moved better than I have in years. Go on, buy it, you'll feel better! Defiantly recommend.

  • I LOVE THIS DVD!
    By A3FR7SCYCSG6JI on 2004-01-26
This did it for me! I have been trying to like yoga and get into it for so long and I finally have figured it out!
After I lift and have a "traditional" work out I supplement it with this DVD or preferably their "AM PM" one to get that stretching/muscle elongation thing going that my body craves after a good, hard workout.

The deep breathing and focusing really lets me enjoy the fruits of my labor (my muscles) because I have to focus on them so much that it's like worshipping at the temple of ME! Yay! (How fun!)

Soooo if you enjoy focusing on YOU for a finite amount of time daily I verrry verrry highly recommend checking out this series.

I like to take my time to figure the DVD's out and enjoy getting better and more fluid with the movements every week!

    Enjoy your muscles!

  • Good Workout, Beautiful Set, Nice Music
    By A2L6EV0V3SOATU on 2004-03-18
[...]this workout has common yoga poses , it's not so advanced but also not for beginners, of course if you have bad knees some of the postures won't be good for you but so in all types of workouts, this tape isn't dangerous for anyone except for people who don't listen to their bodies! This is a 65 minute power yoga routine which starts with few modified sun salutations and then full ones , it continues with standing poses(including hero 3) and vinyasas between them , and then some backbends, twists ,forward bends and corpse in the end.One problem only- there's no arm balances on this dvd like they mentioned on the cover! The quality is excellent and so is the music, so it's worth a try.

  • good workout, distracting narration
    By A2I8VLEMYSWUZ4 on 2006-03-05
This DVD is fairly decent as a workout, though a little repetitive. I haven't seen anyone mention this, but Rodney Yee has a serious lisp that is distracting, in addition to a few grammar problems ("groin" does not take a plural). Also, I feel that Yee might not have the greatest understanding of yoga, as he switches from referring to bhujangasana as cobra AND upward dog, when they are THE SAME POSE. So in short, I feel like he's a "celebrity" instructor made famous by Gaiam and their pervasive marketing, but it could be worse. Although I practice yoga for flexibility and not for a spiritual purpose of any kind, Shiva Rea, Yoga Shakti is the only DVD I've seen that's truly worth owning.

  • Know What You're Doing First

As a beginning practioner of yoga, I would have appriciated more guidelines as to the proper poses. Perhaps a short section in addition to the actual practice that explained the poses. The videography is lovely, and the workout is fluid, so more experienced folks will porbably love it.

  • Try another tape
    By A2PUQ7OQ5JUQ6R on 2004-12-29
I generally like power yoga, but I agree that this tape is too repetitive and overall boring. There are so many other poses that could have been incorporated into the workout to keep it from becoming monotonous. I also don't like that there are no modifications - I'd love to be as flexible as Rodney Yee, but I'm not there yet. A much better workout is Bryan Kest's Power Yoga DVD.
