Philips Avent Newborn Starter Setx$30.00
    (314 reviews)
Best Price: $30.00
An ideal gift for new parents and their babies, this Avent newborn starter set combines many essentials for taking care of Baby. This starter set includes two 4-oz. feeding bottles with newborn-size nipples, two 9-oz. feeding bottles with newborn-size nipples, 2 newborn-size nipples, 1 bottle brush, 1 silicone newborn-size pacifier and a bottle of Babycare body and hair wash. Developed in Britain, award-winning Avent bottles more closely simulate the natural feeding process for happier, less colicky babies. The Avent bottle's broad, soft silicone nipple mimics the shape and feel of the breast so Baby can suckle more naturally. Plus, a patented anti-vacuum valve allows air into the bottle as Baby feeds, so less air is swallowed than with conventional bottles. Wide neck design makes cleaning and filling easier too. Bottles are compatible for use with the Avent ISIS breast pump. Imported. The key feature of the Philips Avent newborn starter set bottles is the patented anti-colic nipple. It has an anti-vacuum skirt and one-way air valve that reduces air into the baby's stomach, and hence, reduces painful gas and colic. The natural shape and feel of the silicone nipple closely resembles the breast to make it easier to combine bottle and breastfeeding. The wide-neck bottles are easy to refill and clean. The cap seals the nipple to prevent leaking while mixing or traveling. The set includes two 4-oz. and three 9-oz. reusable bottles and five Avent anti-colic nipples, five dome caps, two newborn pacifiers with caps, and a bottle brush. --Scott Teal

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!! By A34X1ZUFF91H29 on 2004-12-26
The bottles must be assembled the right way to ensure no leaking. I think people are experiencing leaks because of failure to read directions...
-Pull the nipple through the white collar and make sure that the little ridge is sitting on top of the collar all the way around.
-Then put the dome cap onto the white collar.
-Take filled bottles and screw the nipple on as one whole assembled unit (white collar, nipple, and clear dome cap)
-Twist the dome cap until the white collar locks. Do not overtighten. Amazing...no leaks!
When all else fails, read the instructions! All products are made differently.
Our son is ready to start with nipple #3, we haven't had any problems so far. Good luck!
The best! By AX95SK36ZYIF7 on 2005-10-03
Avoid nipple confusion and use avent! My 6 month old baby has been using this since he was only a few days old and there is no problem! I breastfeed, but for the first 5 days when my milk hasn't come in, I used avent. My baby didn't have a problem switching from breast to bottle at all. Even today I give him juice using Avent and my son has no problem switching.
But to backtrack to the birth of my son. The hospital bottle fed my son after taking him away from me because I had a c-section. The hospital used those Similac ready made formula that comes in their own bottle. Between that nipple and the Avent nipple my baby became nipple confused. It was a horrible experience getting him used to the Avent nipple, but once he did it was smooth sailing like I mentioned above.
Learn from me! If you plan on using Avent, bring some bottles with you to the hospital and instruct the nurses to check with you before bottle feeding your baby. Trasfer the formula to the Avent bottle and you'll avoid nipple confusion!
couldn't be happier By on 2004-02-06
My daughter is now 15 months and I've been using Avent since she was born. I couldn't be happier with this brand and was shocked to read a negative review! All I can say to that is these other people must not be using it correctly... Or expecting their child to take a bottle easily when they won't. Some babies won't take a bottle, and so it's always a risk if you buy a bunch of stuff at once. When my daughter was younger, she did better on the breast of course, but you have to use the right nipple for that stage. All babies are very different so the age on the package might not correspond exactly to your child. If it leaks out of their mouth, use a lower level nipple, if they suck too hard, get the next age up. The nice thing is, you save money with Avent because you can use all the same bottles all the way though the sippy cup stage, you just buy different tops. Screw the top on right and it won't leak. The reason I gave it only 4 stars was the that the last stage yellow sippy leaks. It leaks intentionally because it for older children, but still it would still be nice if it didn't pour out of the top. Also, the 3 stages in 1 nipple doesn't work that way it claims to. You are supposed to position it in their mouth 3 different ways and it will give you three different stages. Instead, which ever way you position it, it seems to let out more liquid that a level 3 top. It doesn't bother me though, she just uses that one when I run out of clean sippy tops. Also, I like that the nipples and the pacifiers are much softer than most brands and, I never needed to buy all the extra stuff like breast milk bags or sterilizers because I just used hot water and froze milk right in the 4 oz bottle. It was always very simple for me, I reccommend this brand very highly.
My Daughter Hated Avent Bottles By on 2004-07-06
I bought this starter set based on the good reviews and I had heard that Avent bottle nipples were the closest thing to breastfeeding. My daughter refuses to take these bottles. I think that the nipple is too hard for her - it doesn't really seem to mimic the breast to me! I like the bottles themselves but I don't think they are that great for a breastfeeding baby. I have since switched to the Playtex premium nurser system which has a softer nipple that my daughter likes. A word to the wise: when you are trying to figure out what your baby will take, don't buy an entire bottle feeding system because they may not like the bottle and then you have to start all over again. In retrospect, I would have just bought one Avent bottle and tried it out instead of dropping $30 for nothing.
Much improved By A2ZM9BGE3K3SY2 on 2004-01-02
This set is much better than Avent's last "Newborn Starter Set". The old set had 1 pacifier, 2 4oz bottles, 2 9oz bottles, 4 newborn (number 1) nipples and 1 bottle brush. This set has 2 newborn pacifiers, 2 4oz bottles, 3 9oz bottles, 5 newborn (number 1) nipples, and 1 bottle brush. This set is great when you couple it with the Avent Infant Feeding Set (4 9oz bottles, 1 pacifier, 4 travel nipple bases, 4 sealing disks, and 4 slow flow (number 2) nipples. Avent is really improving the products they offer.
- They Leak, They Leak, They Leak
     By AP2DSUPHCB845 on 2004-03-03
"These are supposed to be the best bottles"!!!! This is what I was told, but no one told me they leaked. After my son was born, my husband and I bought a couple boxes of the different sizes of the avent bottles. I told him that everyone says these are the best bottles to use. After using them, my husband and I noticed they leaked. Not all the time, but often enough. This got very frustrating, especially at 2:00 in the morning when we were tired. We would put the cap on numerous times and the bottle would still leak. The leak was coming from the cap not the nipple. I also noticed how messy they are. My son always spit his formula out while drinking because I think the hole in the size 1 nipple is too big. His shirt would be soaked and formula would get on his neck after feeding him. We packed all the bottles away and we use the playtex ventaire. These bottles work so much better. They are not messy at all and they do not leak. I can even feed my son without putting a bib on him. I'm sure others like the avent bottles, but my experience with them was not so good. My advice for mothers, especially new ones, would be to get a couple different brands to experiment with. This way you can decide what works better for baby and you.
- Nipples Too Hard...horrible for a breastfed baby!
     By AYWO4G4XS5XC5 on 2005-10-18
My husband and I originally tried the Avent bottles after several recommendations from previous users and after doing some research on our own. However, we switched to Dr. Brown's when our son began suffering from gas and nipple confusion, since I am nursing. We can't express how much we LOVE the Dr. Brown's bottles. Our son's gas IMMEDIATELY disappeared and he no longer suffered from nipple confusion. The Avent nipples are TOO HARD for a breastfed baby. Dr. Brown's bottles are the BEST BOTTLES ON THE MARKET! Pass on these...don't believe the hoopla.
- They DO Leak... BUT.....
     By A2RY5Q5YTKZ1M7 on 2005-03-31
Listen all - as a Dad of 2 (19mo & 3mo) these bottles LEAK.
It's not nipple age, microwaved, dish-washed, or how your kid sucks it down. It's a matter of how the nipple fits into the cap and how the cap and nipple screw onto the bottle.
Trust me, as a dude I went through all of the above. Brand new out of the box or used over 6 months you just have to resign to the fact that these things have a tendency to spill out.
DUDE's GUIDE TO LEAKING BOTTLE:
A. After filling the bottle's content, cap it and shake or tip the bottle over the sink. Allow contents to spill out of nipple. Then tip the bottle upright. It is at that time you will know if your bottle is leaking or not. If it is leaking, proceed to Step B. If it is not leaking, repeat process a couple more times just to be sure. Feed baby.
B. If the bottle does spill or leak, unscrew the cap and use a paper towel or bib and dry the inside threads of the white cap.
Dry the external threads of the bottle as well. Screw on cap. Reef on it like you mean it (usually you're PO'd by now so a little agression helps). Repeat Step A.
Avent bottles are based of a simple principle of channelling air through the nipple/cap threads rather than having the baby backwash (ala chugging a Dr. Pepper from a bottle). It needs to draw air. While eating, just make sure the nipple is at least 1/2 way in the baby's mouth and his lips/mouth are WIDE open as if he was nursing.
These moms that say they have to tip their baby upside down etc. is baloney. Tip the bottle - DUH! And as for air/gas/burping, all babies suck air while nursing/bottle-fed. Babies do that. They still have the breathe-thru-nose-while-eating mechanism after doing the same for months in the womb.
So trust me. It takes a little work to understand these things. These ARE good bottles and they DO work. Just be aware of the above.
Hope this helps.
- Don't be fooled by the expensive price tag.....
     By A1MXOQKGYHKVP9 on 2004-01-26
When registering for baby products, my husband and I had no idea where to start with choosing baby bottles, so of course we assumed the Avent were the best since they are more expensive. We quickly learned our lesson! We used the bottles for a month, my daughter was always so cranky after a feeding and we couldn't figure out why. It turned out that it was gas that was causing her so much pain. She would scream and scream! We finally realized, after noticing all of the bubbles in the bottle, there was too much air getting into her belly! On top of that her shirt would be soaked after a feeding, the smallest nipple they have for those bottles is still too much for an infant. She would drink the bottle so fast and it would just pour down her cheek onto the front of her. Needless to say we stopped using the Avent bottles, (now that we have 2 dozen!) and switched to the Playtex Ventaire, it was such a huge difference, no bubbles in the bottle, no belly pain from gas, and no formula stained shirt! We love these new bottles.
- Gassy baby? Make sure you're holding the bottle right!
     By A30X1KZ6BPOSGV on 2005-01-31
Avent has caused no problems for our baby and causes no gas with her, they wash easily, wear well, and look great months later. Those who say they leak must not know how to screw on the lid correctly.
For those with gassy babies:
- To bottle feed correctly, you need to put the base of the nipple UP AGAINST THEIR WIDE-OPEN MOUTH
- You CAN'T just put the tip of the nipple in their mouth, if you do it overworks their facial muscles, they become tired and they let their mouths fall open at the sides and begin sucking in air
- If you hold the bottle UP AGAINST THEIR MOUTH with a good seal, as you would breast feed them, they WILL NOT BE GASSY.
- GOOD QUALITY BUT ANNOYINGLY LEAKY!!!
     By A1R9XQQQNBDIUR on 2004-01-25
I feel like Avent makes good quality merchandise, but I really hate these bottles, namely the nipples. Not only do they leak if not pulled into the collar well enough, but also if the collar is not screwed onto the bottle just so. If you ever need to assemble them while half asleep, that can prove to be quite a mess. Also, as another reviewer stated, the nipples are quite hard and I have found that both my breastfed babies preferred softer nipples, such as Healthflow (disposable) and Playtex disposable wide. I also purchased a million of these bottles to store breast milk, but found it's so much easier to buy milk storage bags and use them with disposable liner-style bottle systems (specifically, Playtex). They thaw quicker when frozen, store in less space, and you don't have to transfer them to a bottle with an acceptable nipple! :o) All in all, if you want a good manual pump, buy the Avent Isis...but I would not recommend the bottles for feeding.
- Baby likes them, we hate them
     By A2WKVOUZ3M0OR9 on 2004-07-24
Hey, who doesn't love formula stains all over every piece of clothing they own? And who doesn't want to hear their baby scream in the middle of the night while they try for the umpteenth time to get the stupid nipple on right? If the answer is you then you might not want to spend a fortune on annoying Avent.
After investing a load of money in these leaky things, I did find that my daughter likes them. However, my daughter has always eaten like a horse and would probably drink formula from an old tennis shoe just as happily so I'm not giving Avent ANY credit. I have not experimented with other bottles because I'm destitute after sinking so much money into these things.
The hand pump works great for a hand pump. And of course, the idea is that you can pump and just attatch the nipple and feed the baby. Great idea but if you're like me and you cherish every drop of breast milk for the pain and effort it took you to create it then you hardly want to see it pouring out of what basically turns into a collander if the top isn't on right.
I've heard theories about why these leak. Lid is too tight. Lid is too loose. I've tested all of this and none of it works. And I believe if enough people have problems with these bottles to come up with theories for why they leak, why on Earth does anyone else buy them. I will say that my dog has developed a taste for formula and truly enjoys these bottles. He knows that usually there will be a puddle of formula for him to lick up after I've tested the bottle for leaks the 1st 2nd and 3rd times.
The choice is yours. But if you have nowhere better to sink your money just let me know. You can pay me half as much and I'll come over and sprinkle formula all over your kitchen.
- SECRET TO NO LEAKS...READ ON!!!!!!!
     By A31B1LO6CTBGKE on 2004-12-08
Like so many of the other people who wrote reviews, I also had leaks a lot. I was ready to go out and buy new bottles when I decided to go to Avent's website. It had instructions on how to properly put the bottles together so you don't get spills. I tried it...and it works! :) You have to pull the nipple through the white collar, put the plastic lid on, then screw it on the bottle. The directions actually came with the bottles, I just never read them. I figured I knew what to do and there wouldn't be anything different to do. Well, I'm happy I found the secret...and I hope everyone finds this note helpful!
- Love the bottles
     By A1SIXZ0SFLFZ on 2005-01-15
I have been using these bottles since April 2004 and my baby is now 9 months old. I LOVE them! We have NOT had any problems using them - they work with the pump or just for formula feeding. We have not had problems with leaking at all. I now use the AVENT trainer cup and the nipple fits nicely with that cup as well. I would highly recommend these bottles to any new mom - they wash well and keep looking like new.
- Love them!
     By A3C1KACF50S45W on 2005-05-15
We have used these bottles for almost 8 months and we love them! We probably love them because we were told by a friend before our son was born that they were wonderful but unless you completely dry them off they will leak. Well, we just make sure that everything is completely dry and we havn't any problems with them. We have passed off this advise to everyone we know who uses these and they havn't had any problem since!

**** DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN CAPS, ONLY SCREW ON UNTIL THEY STOP...DO NOT CRANK THEM FURTHER ********
I ALMOST THREW IN THE TOWEL ON THESE...THEY LEAK ALOT IF YOU HAVEN'T FIGURED THIS OUT. NOW I LIKE THEM AND WILL USE THEM AGAIN.
- Leaky Bottles
     By A3B5EWP9GYKC7P on 2006-05-18
I see where others have stated that if you read the directions these bottles will not leak. That is NOT so. I am an educated person and I have checked and re-checked the bottles, they are assembled correctly. These bottles are awful about leaking, and sometimes you can just turn the bottle a certain way to keep them from leaking, but it is very frustrating to leak your hard-earned breast milk from a poorly constructed bottle. The other reviews are correct unfortunately-the nipples are the best and that is why I continue to use them. My daughter will not take any other nipple even after trying other brands. She likes the advent ones. My recommendation to all moms would be to not even start with the advent ones. I have been told the vent aire from playtex are great and never leak. ???
- Not the best product
     By A3OB89UC7RN56K on 2004-01-30
I bought a bunch of these bottle before I had my son, thinking these would be the best bottles. However, my son wouldn't latch on to the nipple. I breast fed for the first 4 mos. and only needed the bottle for occasional use. I ended up using the ready to go bottles of formula that you just attatch a nipple to. He loved these. After a while, (about 9 mos.) I tried to use the avent bottle again and he liked it. Its the perfect size for when they learn to hold the bottle temselves. However, they do leak. Not all of the time, just occasionally. My advise is not to buy a whole bunch of any bottle before having a baby- buy a couple of different bottles and see which one your newborn prefers. They are very picky about the nipples.
- Nipples are too hard for nursing babies!
     By A2DLFKIS9R6RII on 2005-04-21
We purchased over 20 Avent bottles for my daughter before she was born because we had heard so many great things about the bottle and also saw the good reviews.
My daughter took the Avent for about two weeks...then she all of a sudden decided that she didn't want to take it anymore!
We tried every single bottle on the market and the only bottle that she will take is the Playtex Deluxe Nurser. The nipple is soft on her gums and it acts exactly like a real breast nipple acts.
My advise to new or expectant parents is ... don't buy a lot of any one bottle until you are sure that your baby is going to latch on well! Trust me ... I have over $100 in unused Avent bottles that are collecting dust!
- not ok for combining breastfeeding and bottle
     By AZF0YSJEYQCTK on 2005-09-28
I am a first time mom, when I created my baby registry I reviewed the comments on the avent bottles, one thing they don't say is that this bottles are no good if you're planning to breastfeed and use a bottle once or twice a day for DH to share the joy. I got avent and dr. brown's bottles and none of them have been 100% satisfactory for my baby. The avent leaks and the silicone nipple is too bulky on my baby's mouth, the liners are difficult to work with. I also tried Dr. Brown's and they leak more than the Avent, plus it's takes longer to ensemble (in the middle of the night when you're trying to fix some formula) After trying all of these bottles, my baby didn't seem as happy as taking the real thing (don't get me wrong, I'm happy to breastfeed, but sometimes my nipples get soared) I came across the PLAYTEX bottles with rubber nipples. Believe me they do the job as close to the real thing as you can get. Get the EASY DROP INS with a round opening to fit on the bottle without trying to open the liner from the sides. The nipples are great to combine breastfeeding and bottle.
- Great bottles & nipples
     By A3TZAISJ3020Z8 on 2006-02-18
We bought these based on a recommendation from a lactation consultant during a breastfeeding class, and they're working fine for us.
My wife breastfeeds our son and pumps a little bit after each feeding. We combine the expressed milk into one bottle, which I give to him in the early morning so that she can sleep through one feeding. That lets her get the rest she needs, and I get some extra bonding time with our baby boy.
These bottles are working very well for us. I'm careful not to overtighten them, and they've never leaked. The wide mouths make the bottles easy to clean, and the lactation consultant said that the shape makes them easier for babies to grip when they're ready to start helping to hold bottles themselves.
I also like how clearly the fluid levels are marked on the sides of the bottles. The Medela storage bottles we got with our pump are much harder to read, as is a Gerber bottle we were given.
Our son ends up with slightly more gas from using these bottles than from breastfeeding, but not enough to cause him any problems. He also eats faster when using the bottles, which could make pumping and bottle feeding more convenient than pure breastfeeding when my wife and I are really tired.
All in all, we are really happy we tried these bottles.
- Great for breastfeeding moms
     By A2X423ETX2CX3U on 2005-02-25
We've been using these bottles since our son was 1 week old, and they work great. He had no problem with nipple confusion switching between this bottle and the breast. We've had no problems with leaking, and I love the fact that you can convert the bottles to sippy cups later.
One note for breastfeeding moms -- your baby may be able to use the #1 nipple for much longer than a formula-fed baby, since it more closely resembles how the milk comes from you. So wait before buying #2 & #3 nipples, because you may not need them!
- Good for Breastfeeding Moms
     By A2IQ9LX670ZORV on 2005-03-28
I almost exclusivly breastfed my son. But after the first few weeks, I began incorporating a bottle so someone else could feed the little tiger usually about once a day. This was my first child and everyone who knew I was breastfeeding said Avent was the best. In my opinion, these bottles stood up to that claim. Moms who are trying to be successful at breastfeeding have enough challenges and these bottles never caused any confusion or otherwise any digestive problems with my son. (I also liked the avent pacifiers...my son used them for a while and learned early on to self-sooth with his thumb)
These bottles are wide which makes them easier to clean; something to think about as you will be cleaning tons of bottles.
As for the concerns with leaking, this is my conclusion on that: I used these bottles on occasion while I was focused on breastfeeding and much more frequently after I weaned at 10 months. My assessment is that with use, constant microwaving, heating, and cleaning, the bottles wear down (as do the nipples) and that's when the leaking started. You aren't supposed to keep the same nipple for a log time anyway (same with pacifiers) and the few times one of the bottles "sprung a leak", we just bought a new one and had no problems. So I think the leaks are a sign that you just need to refresh your old bottle supply. LIke I said, I don't think any bottle is designed to last over the course of a full year with constant use.
I am expecting boy number 2 now. Again, I plan to breastfeed so I plan to stick with Avent because the most important thing to me is the ease of switching from breast to bottle when needed. I am sure there are other products that work just as well, but I guess I am a loyalist.
- Don't overtighten!
     By A27PDQ6SW0EWIU on 2005-05-18
I love these bottles. I breastfeed and supplement with Avent bottles. No nipple confusion. No gas. You can not overtighten the tops or you may get some leaks. We have had great success with these.
- New moms don't buy these bottles!!
     By A2NSOPFQXCV96V on 2005-11-03
I can get over the leaking part however these bottles flow way to fast for a newborn baby. Stage one nipples drowned my baby and caused a lot of gas. I recommend the Playtex premium nursers to start with. No one talks a lot about the fast flow of the avent bottles under these reviews, but if you read the reviews of the other bottles you'll see that many people switched from Avent because of this problem. I haven't tryed the ventaire bottles but a friend of mines baby girl loves them. In my opinion Avent would be my last choice.
- THEY LEAK!!
     By AER1TLREWVSCE on 2005-12-05
These are not the cheapest bottles on the market so I was surprised to find that they leak constantly. I know that many reviewers have said that there is a specific way to assemble these bottles but in 4 months I have tried EVERYTHING and I still get leaks! After spending countless and painful hours pumping my breast milk it is very frustrating to have all of it pour out all over my daughter and me. Not to mention that these bottles have ruined many of me and my daughters' shirts and have permanently stained our couch. Another scenario that I continually face with these bottles is cleaning up formula or breast milk off of my walls and floors because sometimes they leak when I shake them for mixing purposes. Also, most of the time when I am running errands I have to run home to get more milk because the bottles leaked out half of my supply. Bottom line - you have to change your baby's clothes enough in one day without having to do so because of a leaky bottle. Save your sanity and clothing - go with a different brand!!
P.S. I just bought all new Dr. Brown's bottles and they are wonderful!! My baby actually has less gas than with the Avent ones. They are harder to clean though.
- AVENT BOTTLES CONTAIN BPA BISPHENOL-A.
     By A36LJTZO3YWBD9 on 2008-04-09
I liked Avent Bottles, my daughter Liked them too! Then I found out about Bisphenol -A being used to make the Bottles. After re-searching Bisphenol -A, I discovered that exposing my baby to harmful chemicals with the potential for long term affects later in life, was definitely not for me!! There are other options out there, all glass bottles are safe, as well as Born Free, Mam by Sassy, Green to Grow and Adrini. Do your own research. I'm really surprised the non Bisphenol -A Free bottles haven't been recalled yet! I'm sure it's just a matter of time, before enough people are educated.
- A great bottle!!!
     By on 2004-04-09
Avent was the only bottle that my son would take. I had bought and registerd for all Playtex bottles, so when my son refused the Playtex bottles I was stuck with a ton of them! Do yourself a favor and register for several different brands and see which brand your baby prefers. In my case, Avent was the bottle of choice. I have read several reviews stating that Avent bottles leak and I can't say that leaky bottles have ever been a problem. If you line the nipple and ring up and don't overtighten the ring, you will not have a leak. Many people also say that Avent bottles are more expensive. Compared with Playtex bottles, which is what MOST other people use, Avent would be cheaper in the long run because you have to buy liners for the Playtex bottles and that can add up. Plus, Avent lives up to what it says because my son has never had gas or colic. From my own experience, Avent has been wonderful and I would recommend them to any mother!!!!
- not happy
     By on 2004-04-06
I bought a bunch of these bottle before I had my daughter, thinking these would be the best bottles as per mostly all my friends encourages me to get(no gassy babies with this bottle). However, i noticed after a few weeks of breastfeeding more often (i mixed fed my baby when she was born, 60% bottle/40% breastmilk, i was still on the stage of learning to breastfeed that's why she had a lot of bottle feeding that time) my daughter wouldn't latch on to the nipple (my milk wasn't enough, need the bottle occasionally), my daughter find the nipple too firm, it doesn't feel like my breast. I checked another brand(a lot softer nipple), and it works well for her. I am still hoping she'll be able to use them once she get older though (there's a bunch of them, it would be a big waste if she won't). So (...), buy a couple of different bottles and see which one your newborn prefers. Yes, babies are very picky about the nipples.
- You can prevent the leaks!
     By A1LXGZTW6GR771 on 2004-10-27
I have used Avent bottles for all 3 of my kids and am still using them for my daughter now. I had a lot of problems in the beginning with leaks, until I figured out that the problem was only when I screwed the nipple on too tightly. It's your natural inclination to screw it on tightly to avoid leaks, but if you do it too tight it causes the nipple to buckle under the rim and then leaks as the other parents have experienced. Aside from that (which is easily remedied) they are easier to clean than other brands, and my babies took to them immediately. I'm not fond of the pacifiers though - and prefer the Gerber Nuk because I can buy it at the grocery store in an emergency (and my babies all liked them better anyway). You can use a regular dish brush to clean the bottles, too, so you really don't even need a bottle brush. I'd just buy bottles instead of the starter set.
