    • Poorly and cheaply manufactured...possibly a fire hazzard

      By A2HITBCWVTVERB on 2007-03-17
I received this unit the first week of November 2006. By Valentines day it was toast (no pun intended).

At first it worked fine. I used it to warm the end of our big living room near the front door where it is was almost always cold. I set the thermostat at about 3/4 maximum and left it to work. It was also completely quiet as advertised.

Then, sometime in January, I noticed that the On/Off knob was turning brown near the edges--as if discolored by excessive heat. I turned it off to investigate. Then turned it on again. Nothing. The unit was dead. After repeatedly turning it off and on I noticed sparking underneath the switch. After repeatedly spinning the switch between off/on it would finally come back on and would stay on for 2 or 3 days until it failed again.

After about 10 days of this I unplugged it out of fear for my family's safety. Now it waits in my garage until I can take a trip to the dump and dispose of it. WHAT A GIANT HASSLE FOR A 55 DOLLAR HEATER! And don't doubt for a second that Honeywell COUNTS on people not wanting to hassle with returns.

Another example of an electronic device made as cheaply as possible with little or no regard for quality or safety.

It will be a cold day in you-know-what before I purchase anything else from Honeywell. I better find me a QUALITY heater soon so that day never comes.

      -30-

Addendum: I went to Honeywell's website and got the customer service contact info. I have sent email (3 times so far) telling them of the problems and possible dangers and requesting refund or replacement. They have never replied.

    • happy so far

we bought this heater almost a year ago to use in the home office area. we have no heating system in that room and it gets pretty cold. we keep honeywell running at 70F for approximately 6 hours a day and it works fine and heats up the room efficiently. yesterday we purchased the delonghi TRN0812T to put in the baby's room to save some space. we hope delonghi will do the job as good as honeywell.

    • Oversize Heater

      By AQKEG0C8IWUCA on 2007-09-21
Heater appeared to be very good quality but the overall size did not permit it use in a small bathroom. None of the product specs. gave any dimentions which would have saved us from having to return the heater. We measured the heater for any other purchasers reference. It is 41"long X 5" deep X 7" tall. Hope this helps.

    • Great use for our son's room

      By A1T76K2CSSZQYN on 2007-01-09
We purchased this heater back in October for our now 8 month old son's room to help take the chill off the air at night when he's sleeping. We picked this one because it was silent (no fan) and had a temperature control with an on/off switch. It works quite well even with the door slightly ajar at night. After 3 months of use, the heater is starting to make little creaking noises, but is still working fine.

The only down side to this heater is the metal surface gets really hot so we will have to be careful once he starts crawling and walking.

    • also a short circuit, but don't buy Hydrosil eithe

      By A1KCDJRDFZT26B on 2007-12-28
I also had sparking around the on off switch

Let me add a Hydrosil WARNING - I then bought a Hydrosil which has a big Lifetime warranty banner on their web site, and paid a small fortune (I am embarrassed to say how much) for that and because it claims American Made. The Hydrosil is a piece of junk and their policy is no return, no refunds. The BBB has a bunch of complaints about Hydrosil, wish I had checked that first.

    • Very disappointing
      By A13DV6Z6PXK9V0 on 2007-05-30
The first week it was great. then it started making these loud clicking noises. and then about 2 months later it stopped working. by then it was too late to exchange. too much of a hassle to go through the company directly. probably would have spent 1/2 its value to get it working again.

    • Poorly designed heater
      By A1LI23OQPEC208 on 2007-12-16
This heater worked for about 3 months, and now the switch won't turn it on anymore.

From reading other reviews, it seems like this is a common problem, probably due to the heating of an internal switch. The heater is impossible to open to try to fix it, and I can't find anything about this product being recalled.

3 months of operation is way to low for $55... Don't buy this product.

    • Quiet, Even distribution, but a little slow
      By A8U5EILWF0UCE on 2007-12-28
This is the same heater that Consumer Reports rated highest and a best buy. Actually, CR rated a different model (HZ519) but this is exactly the same but has knobs not digital controls and is half the price.

Works great. Bought 2. keeps a 225+ Sq. Foot room (9 foot ceilings) over 70 degrees with the outside temp. under 32 degrees!
      Very quiet...silent!

Takes about 2 hours to bring it from 55 to 70 so it's a little slow!

    • The best 1500 watt heater on the market....
      By A269NHAJA7SCE1 on 2008-02-13
This heater out performs my oil-filled 1500 watt heater hands down. I replaced my bedroom heater with this one 14ft X 13ft ... We live at 2600 feet... In the past , my oil filled unit takes the chill off my bedroom .. This one woke me up sweating last night.. I had to turn it off and crack the exterior door to cool the room down.. The temperature outside dropped to below 40 degrees and we use no other source of heat at this end of the home.. In fact, One unit in my living room 13ft X 17ft with an 18ft peaked ceiling and a full wall of windows... Takes the chill right off.... Didn't even start a fire today .. I'm impressed..

    • Im still cold!!
      By A16GV9B68Q9NVB on 2007-02-22
I agree, this heater ssssllloowwwly warms the room.
I'm still sitting here freezing my buns off!!

    • Great Heater
      By A1RQ7NANIGPMXZ on 2007-11-20
Depite the lack of a digital thermostat, the unit performs well. I do recommend this heater.

    • 2 Dead within 6 months
      By A15FB4J4VKVVOV on 2007-12-18
I bought two of these heaters and the on/off switches went on both of them, rendering them useless, within 6 months.

    • Fabulous
      By AM8DZM420ZEP4 on 2008-02-08
This heater makes me question why I have always used the ones that blow warm air...This one is efficient...quiet and works great especially for my oldest dog who has arthritis....

    • So disapointed
      By AMA2GS4QN6ZSF on 2007-02-07
After reading the reviews on this product I thought it would be a great space heater for my apt. I couldn't have been more wrong. It barely gets hot - even on the highest setting - and gives off almost no heat!!

Perhaps mine is defective or got broken during shipping, but it was a huge waste of money. I have had to go out an buy another space heater already.

It is so frustrating. One word - don't!!

    • limitations
      By A3H08K376QWC2O on 2008-03-04
I called the company and they said this heater cannot sit on anything except a bare floor or tiles due to fire hazard relating to the low profile.
It is absolutely quiet! And for that reason, I am afraid I will forget about it and leave the house w/out turning it off.
For my house it is too long to fit in most places and yet it can't heat a very large room. So knowing what I know now I would not have purchased it.

    • Wish I had taken notice of dimensions before ordering
      By A12CEFLNL6Y20N on 2007-10-25
Wish I had taken notice of dimensions before ordering as this heater takes up quite a bit of room. The heat it puts out is moderate, probably would be ok for a small room. If I had to do it again I would order the HZ-519 instead even though more expensive it has better reviews.

    • Very good for the price
      By A3UNES8SNZVTK5 on 2008-02-01
I ordered this from Amazon on 1/27/08 and received it on 1/30/08 with the free shipping. Talk about fast.

For the price, this is a very good heater. The digital thermostat version costs almost twice as much and is no longer available.

Because this is a radiant heater, it takes a couple minutes for the coils to get hot. But once it heats up, it has a very even heat distribution through the top of the large grille opening.

I use this in my daughter's room because the existing baseboard heater no longer functions well. To maintain 67 degrees with an outside temp of 28 degrees, the unit operates for 3 minutes and 15 seconds before it cycles off for 11 minutes and 30 seconds. So in effect, it's running for 12 minutes per hour. And that is with a house that has less than ideal insulating conditions (single-pane windows and drafty at that). So I believe the unit is very efficient. I'm hoping this will reduce my electric bill a few dollars per month.

Even though it is labeled a portable heater, it is anything but that. It is not heavy, but it is long. If space is an issue or you need something you want to move from room-to-room, buy an oscillating heater.

I hope the review helps other buyers in their decision.

    • Good product
      By A269NHAJA7SCE1 on 2008-02-02
I searched the Web for 'best heater'. I found this product ( actually, there was an earlier version that had a better digital display.. Too bad ... No longer produced..)

We live in the foothills and have just experienced our 8th day of snow and ice.

I had bought three 1500 watt oil-filled heaters, which are on plug in timers timers to go in bedrooms. They kick on at preset times to take the chill off the room and then cut out about 2 AM.

My 10X13 poorly insulated bedroom, which is the far corner of the home and miles away from the woodburner is the coldest room of the home.

I had one of the oil-filled units set up there and replaced it with this one. I used it three nights and woke up at 1AM each night and turned off the unit because it made my room too stuffy.

On a gut level, I'd say that it produces 2X the heat that the same wattage oil-filled does. You do however need a 4 ft open wall to place it against.

    • Used as heater for bathroom
      By AAKMIAUQ5RHM9 on 2007-05-15
The heater is perfect and does just what we wanted. It heats a 10x10 bathroom, the heat can be regulated and the price was great!

    • warm at last
      By A2C15UKKXZI690 on 2007-11-12
after spending last winter bundled in layers of clothing to try and get warm it is nice to sit here in shirt sleeves to write this review. there have had been several days that i have had to turn this heater off because the room became to warm. electric bill did not skyrocket and that is a big plus. looking forward to a comfortable winter.

    • Excellent product
      By A5XWSXEBM6LTB on 2008-01-20
This is the best space heater that I've had. I've tried hard wiring other models but this unit does the trick.

    • takes the chill off nicely
      By A25HHT8K4XDK03 on 2008-01-28
In slightly below freezing temps, using no central heat, we warmed a 275 sf room nicely with this model. In the great room, about 750 sf, it took the chill off, but we weren't toasty.
If you want a blast of heat, get a heater with a fan. If you want a steady, silent source of warmth, the Honeywell HZ 515 works well. And at under $30, the price is terrific.

    • Best Room Heater
      By A548ZZWND755P on 2008-02-08
I first bought a $300 edenpure heater and sent it back after poor performance and this bought this one for under $50/BEATS THE $300 heater by far/would HIGHLY recommend this heater and may buy 2nd for the another room/quiet and efficient!!

    • great price, low profile heater
      By A108HE5WT2H4Z3 on 2008-02-18
I ordered two heaters ( one for me at my condo, the other for my girlfriend at hers) and now in mid February, I've turned OFF my furnace and can heat comfortably with this unit. Now, I am on the 2nd floor of a three story building, so above and below I am "insulated" by my neighbors.
My idea is to cut my heating bill by ten percent or more, because my money feels better in my pocket than in the energy company's pockets! Will let you know in a month or so if this has significantly helped. Also, shipping from Polstein's was very acceptable. (received order on Valentine's Day)
      Sincerely,
      TIMMER

Winter 2008 is just around the corner! This low profile heater had already paid for itself last year, and with the slow economy, both of our condominiums will certainly have lower heating bills this year with this great product. As I stated at purchase, my money feels better in my pocket and this heater will surely help.

    • heats well just be careful
      By A1B57JE1UY5P76 on 2008-05-02
We bought 2 of these for our basement the heat comes out well, it feels like real heat not like a lot of those heaters that seem to just blow hot air. Only problem I see with this one is it might be a bit dangerous if a kid or someone accidently left clothes on top of it, but with almost any heater there are risks. Also I rather have a digital temperature on it but there is still a temp dial on it where it turns off when it reaches certain degrees. I say for the money this is a very realiable heater that heats even better than that overpriced Amish/China heater we bought in an newspaper ad. (I still like to support Amish but umm that product is not the best heater)

    • Worked good for the 2 months I used it last year, now it don't work.
      By A2WTFP1NKS6R87 on 2008-10-27
I bought this in January and it worked good for the two months we used it. I plugged it in this year and it worked three weeks then quit working.

I thought that it was a little cumbersome when I got it, but the price was right and so was the consumer reports review. I swore by it all year long after the performance during the cold months. I just wish it would last longer than three months of use.

It wasn't like it was beat while in storage. I kept the original box and put it back in it when we werent using it. I got it back out this winter and it worked for three weeks, now it wont work.

now is the time of year that they mark these things up, so don't wast your money on buying a heater that doesn't last.

    • Honeywell delivers the heat
      By A2OB6DESQIJQLJ on 2008-01-12
I gave this as a gift and I've gotten nothing but rave reviews about it performance. The person who I gave it to lives in NY and the landlord is spotty at best with the heat. This Honeywell heater is keeping his place very comfortable.

    • where's the heat?
      By AV8JIOH3D5RQK on 2008-01-15
Don't be fooled by the product description:

      Two heat settings
      Great for heating large rooms
      High and low heat settings

PROS: The heater is almost silent.

CONS: It is rather large, and since the manual advises you to place it 3 ft away from any objects, it's like having a small keyboard in the middle of your floor. Yes, there are TWO heat settings... warm and warmer. The unit barely creates any heat for my small bedroom, so forget about it heating a large room. Since it does not use a fan, the little heat that is generated remains slightly above and in front of the unit. Maybe I have a bad unit? Probably not, because I ordered 2 of them, and they both heat the same. I'm going to have to contact Honeywell and see why it's not heating up much.

    • Works Great
      By A28HTKABYIQC1H on 2008-01-21
Bought the heater two months ago to heat my Shop/Garage. Its 15 degrees F outside and the Shop is a comfortable 64. Hint - a fan in the room helps circulate the air and makes the heater that much more efficient.

    • Good Heater
      By A126JLIRF69BRJ on 2008-01-30
I bought two of these for our finished basement-to supplement the heat. They are working great since October-5 months now... They are low enough to look over them if need be-like for tv viewing purposes-obviously keep it far enough away from electronics. It takes at least 7 minutes to start to heat the room up-which is just fine. It can go all day long-no problems...except for the thermostat. I was really looking forward to the thermostat so I wouldn't have to keep adjusting the heater. We read the directions three times now and went through them again and again and the heater always resets itself to 81 which is way too high. I cannot figure out what we are doing wrong. So we are always WARM! :) I was scared to death to look at my power bill with the two 81 degree heaters going all December-but it was just an extra 50.00 and thats with the holiday electricity as well.
