This cookie scoop from Oxo has improved my cookies markedly. You know how that last minute or two in the oven is critical--the difference between underdone, just right, and burnt-around-the-edges? Well, if your cookies aren't the same size to start, you're never going to hit that "just right" sweet spot. The big ones are underdone when the little ones are just right, or if the big ones are perfect, the small ones are burnt. I used to scoop cookie dough with a spoon, but this little gem of a tool is much more precise and neater to use.
Unlike cheaper scoops, the squeeze action is very smooth. It doesn't stick halfway through the squeeze, it doesn't require a lot of pressure, and the release is firm but not too firm--I used a scoop once that had a recoil like a rifle.
By the way, I have narrow hands but don't find the width of the handles to be a problem. Oxo is well known for its ergonomic designs, and this tool is no exception--I just baked 10 dozen cookies for a school event and my hands weren't tired at all. (My back is another matter!)
The dough releases well (even really sticky doughs like almond macaroons) and drops in a nice rounded ball into your hand. A quick roll to round off the bottom and it's ready for the cookie sheet.
The rated measure is 1-1/2 tablespoon (that's level, by the way) (well, of COURSE I checked for myself... I'm a baker, and that means "compulsive about measuring"). Oxo also makes a large and small scoop, but this one is the best size for the kitchen standard cookies: tollhouse, peanut butter, and the like.
I've thrown mine in the dishwasher several times with no problem. This is a good thing, because there are several crevices inside the handles and in the spring mechanism between them that could be a bit fiddly once the peanut butter dries.
Do yourself (and your cookie-eaters) a favor and pick up this gadget. I can't find a thing in the world wrong with it.

The medium-size scoop is just fantastic. It's my fourth or fifth cookie scoop; the others came from the dime store and broke in short order. I'm particularly pleased with the way the OXO scoops (I have all three sizes) release the dough. The spring actually works, so when you let go, it releases. With the cheap plastic kind, you fill the scoop, and then have to pry the handles apart again to get the dough out again. Having one that works like it's supposed to is definitely easier on my hands and wrists!
Cookies produced this way are uniform in size and round. It's not usually necessary to flatten the balls of dough before baking, but it does help in a few of the "stiffer" recipes, particularly with the largest size.
This medium size is good for "moderately large" drop cookies -- the size you feed to college students, not the size you feed to three year olds. It's also exactly twice the amount of dough you need to make mini-muffin-sized tart shells, and I use it regularly for that just to make sure the dough is measured properly.
The large holds 3 Tablespoons (level measure: it's really easy to overfill these scoops with cookie dough); the medium holds half that amount, and the small holds a little less than half of what the medium does.
I don't bake often with the large size, although I do sometimes make "jumbo" size cookies (probably 3-4" across, depending on how thick they are). It's also useful for making small, uniformly sized hamburger patties.
I like the medium size for most cookies, plus things like meatballs or watermelon balls, which are quick and easy with a cookie scoop.
I like the small size for smaller cookies. I'm particularly fond of how our soft gingersnaps look in the small size, and of course most younger kids (and many adults) would rather have four small cookies instead of two regular-size ones. Regular size chocolate chips (and whole nuts) don't work so well with this scoop, so if you want small cookies, plan to use mini chips (or chopped nuts).
I have used all three sizes for ice cream; they're definitely strong enough to scoop through any ice cream that you have the strength for. I like the large scoop for normal size ice cream, and the smaller ones for preschool-size (or diet-size) scoops. We had a lot of fun one day putting a small scoop of each of two flavors of ice cream in small bowls and dressing it up with whipped cream, sliced strawberries, and a tiny drizzle of chocolate. We definitely got more fun out of this "diet-size" dessert plan than we would have out of eating half a carton of ice cream!
These scoops are also useful for portion control purposes with all kinds of food, and that's one of their primary uses in a commercial kitchen. You can use them for everything from spaghetti sauce to mashed potatoes. (For a fun presentation, scoop mashed potatoes into an ice cream sundae dish and top with "chocolate-colored" gravy.)
Overall, the OXO scoops are the best cookie scoops I've ever used, and I recommend them highly.

I had a cheaper one and it cramped my hands. When I got this one, I was amazed at the difference. It was easier to use and didn't "lock" like the cheap ones did. Plus, the dough comes out easier. Also, you don't have to guess whether or not you put enough dough like you do when using the spoon method. Just scoop and drop. Hint: if you want to make smaller cookies, use a spoon to scoop out a little dough from the scooper.
I rarely have problems with the scoop, but I once got a blister from using it. In spite of this, I'm happy to have it and it's worth the price.

I have another brand of this scoop and needed an additional one for holiday baking. My kitchen is filled with Oxo utensils and I love them all, but this scooper was the WORST. I got it about 2 weeks and it is now in the trash. The feel of the handle is good, but my problem with it was, the slide that makes the dough pop out, didn't work properly (it moved, but didn't push the batter/dough out as it should so I had to either stand there and shake it to make it come out or use a finger or spoon to remove it, which is not the intended use of this tool. So I went back to my original one and finished baking my cookies. Well, a few nights later I had two cookies going, and ever an optimist, pulled the scoop back out to give it a second chance and it was different. The dough I was using was chilled and it was popping out of the scoop great, but then, it stopped working, I tried fiddling with the slide (I was gentle, I didn't take any power tools to the thing, I swear) that makes the dough pop out and the thing fell apart in my hands. Unfortunately, I didn't have the receipt, so I couldn't return (not purchased here at Amazon), so it ended up in the trash.

I bought this for cookies, but I've ended up using it as a near-exact measure for just about everything. And at the end of its work, it happily takes a bath in the dishwasher and comes out looking like it did the day I got it.
A two-scoop drop of waffle batter in my Cuisinart classic waffle maker turns out waffles that exactly fit the round form. The sweep is close to the cup and turns out a clean scoop with no layer remaining in the cup - lower quality scoops do that a lot, at the same time tiring your thumb while this scoop uses your entire hand.
I dish out guacamole, potato filling, sometimes ice-cream (check out the Zyliss for ice-cream but when it's still unwashed, this one works ok) and even brown sugar. Basically anything that is on the firmer side of semi-solid is game for this scoop/disher.
I also have OXO's small scoop and it does an equally nice job. The larger one is more frequently used, though. If you get one you will find lots of uses, and like me, be tempted to have more than just one in your arsenal.

My children and I love to bake cookies for the holidays. We have lots of family members that we send them to and as such we will bake 10-15 dozen at a time. These cookie scoops are fabulous. They make the perfect size cookie every time and always release the dough easily. I usually set up an assembly line where one of my kids scoops while the other rolls the dough in sugar or flattens the balls depending on the receipe. When they get bored they switch places. I'm in charge of making the dough and getting it to the table. You would be surprised at how quickly you can make alot of cookies when you have the right tools and these cookie scoops (small and medium) are definetely a big time saver. To save even more time consider an Exopat baking sheet. Another great time saver.

You can scoop all kinds of things - cookie dough, pancake batter, ice cream. The possibilities are limitless. OK, well they're actually NOT limitless, but as long as something can be scooped, this scoop will do a great job scooping it.
These OXO people keep coming up with good ideas. I never thought to add a comfy handle to my other scoops, but I always reach into the kitchen drawer and root around for this particular scoop because it's a great medium all-purpose size and is really comfortable to hold on to.

I must admit that I bought this because Alton Brown used a disher to make his meatballs. Brilliant! I've used it to make perfect meatballs, perfect cookies, and the cutest little ice cream scoops for dessert. It's been through the dishwasher at LEAST 10 times, and works perfectly every time. I used the small disher/scoop to make what my husband dubbed "the best cookies you've ever made." I HIGHLY recommend this set of scoops.

I recently bought this scoop and the small size one for my holiday baking. They're wonderful! It cuts my prep time significantly because it's so easy to scoop the dough and place it on the baking sheet. For the first time, I have nice round cookies. The handle is really comfortable and it's a cinch to clean in the dishwasher. I find the medium sized scoop is the most versatile. One gadget that I will reuse again and again!

I was using some plastic ballers to do cookies and they just weren't cutting it. I got one of the OXO scoops to replace it and I'm never looking back.
It has really comfortable rubber ergonomic grips that keep your hands from slipping even when a bit greasy. The ratcheting feels solid and you never think they are just going to collapse on you like the plastic ones. The spring is just right, strong enough to quickly reset, but not so tough to wear you out if you use it for several dozen cookies. Plus the paddle sweeps out the dough very well.
The plastic ones I've used have cracked in the head or the handle and the gears were pathetic. The spring didn't always reset all the way and the paddle wasn't machines tightly, so it caught a lot of gunk, making it hard for quick release. I tossed them all out when I got this bad boy.

A scoop is one of two things that most people baking cookies at home don't have but should have. Not only does it make sure that each cookie is the same size and cooked evenly, it makes baking more enjoyable. The thing I hated most about making cookies was trying to wrestle the batter off a spoon.
While most scoops are packaged either Small, Medium, or Large, a more meaningful term is the number stamped on the inside of the handle. The large scoop is a #20, meaning that it takes 20 scoops to equal one quart (think ice cream) the larger the number, the smaller the scoop. Some reviewers are saying that the Medium produces too large of a cookie. It really depends on your ingredients and technique. In my experience, using a #20 with a butter-based batter gives me flat, 4" in diameter cookies. However, chilling the batter in the fridge about 15 mins before scooping, they're poofier and about 3" across (which is the perfect size in my opinion, if you're handing out one cookie per person). If you're using margarine or shortening, expect the cookies to be smaller, but taller, because they melt at higher temperatures than butter.
Oh, the other "must have"? Parchment paper (not wax paper) instead of greasing the cookie sheet. This allows you to lift the cookies off the sheet as soon as you take them out of the oven, before they'd be firm enough to spatula onto a cooling rack. This prevents the bottom of the cookie from over-browing due to the carry-over heat from the sheet. You can also use a reusable Silpat (search Amazon) instead. A roll of parchment paper is about $5 at the grocery store and a Silpat is $20 on Amazon, so it might be worth it if you bake more often than just the holidays.

I really enjoyed using the scoop for the first 2 batches of truffles........shape uniformity,clean hands,even spacing made easier.
But then the unthinkable happened .......the spring action that controls the scoop basically skipped out of the wheel assembly and now the scooper can only release half of the dough .......it wont come completly out of the scoop.

I received this scoop for my birthday and have recently employed it in my holiday baking. I have to say that it was easy to use, my hands are much cleaner this year (although licking my fingers isn't that bad) and I found the cookies to be perfectly sized. I also liked that they printed "1 1/2 Tbs" on the sweeper so I don't forget how much it doles out.

I could kick myself for not buying this and the medium sized scoop sooner. I thought it was a silly luxury. Well, it's a necessity if you want uniform baked cookies. I also use them to measure portions for muffins, ********, desserts - all kinds of things. The action is as smooth as BUTTER. I'm going to get the small one to use for portions on canapes and for flavored butters. I'm sure I'll find other uses while I'm at it.

I first had the medium size of the OXO Good Grips cookie scoop, and I love it to pieces. I've had it a couple of years, and leave it soaking in a mixing bowl of water all the time, and wash it in the dishwasher, top rack.... it looks brand new. I use it at least once a week. It's nice not to have to use 2 teaspoons to scoop dough and try and figure out if all the cookies are the same size. The cookies are also perfectly round and professional looking. I scoop dough with the scoop, and scrape off excess to level the dough against the side of the mixing bowl.
But then I thought, wouldn't it be great to make jumbo cookies and not have to scoop so many times? And wouldn't it also be great to make small cookies, so when I made a batch to take to work, there's technically more cookies to go around per batch?
I think the large and small cookies scoops were unnecessary. Here's why:
The small scoop: One of my favorite cookies to make is oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. The small scoop is hard to use with cookie dough that has chocolate chips or nuts in them, I feel, because it's too small for those additions to a dough. And if a dough has both nuts and chips in them, like a macadamia nut & white chocolate cookie, or chocolate chip & walnut/pecan cookie, forget about it. It's too difficult to get the dough/chip/nut ratio right in each cookie. I do like this small scoop for my peanut butter oatmeal sandwich cookies; they have a peanut butter creme filling, and they're very rich, so it's good to have a smaller cookie size for these. Unfortunately, the PB oatmeal & creme filling cookies aren't asked for very often in my family. Okay, I'll admit, they're never asked for, so I've only made them twice.
The large scoop: I do like this size for my oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, but I don't like it *that* much better than my medium scoop size. And I don't like this scoop for my peanut butter blossom cookies (peanut butter cookie rolled in sugar, and when they come out of the oven, a Hershey Kiss is placed in the center of each cookie to melt).... with such a large, rich cookie, I swear the large size of this cookie doesn't taste as peanut-buttery. When I mentioned this to my family as we ate them after dinner, my brother told me I wasn't crazy, it's the same recipe, but it doesn't taste as much like a peanut butter cookie. The large scoop is simply too big for this cookie, or any other rich cookie.
The medium cookie scoop is the best of both worlds, it's the cookie scoop you should get if you're wondering what size to get. It's a great size for rich cookies, it's a great size for cookies with chips and nuts in them. I feel that the other two scoop sizes are likely to only clutter your kitchen utensil drawer, like they do in mine.

OXO Small Cookie scoop is so worth getting even if you are an infrequent baker like me. I just made 110 cookies! And this gadget made sure that they were all uniform. As a result they baked uniformly and of course look pretty. Scooping was a breeze with no waste and so much cleaner and less painful than the two tablespoon method.

I recently bought this cookie scoop to assist me with my holiday baking. I, like a lot of people, used the spoon method. My cookies would always come out different sizes and different shapes. This scoop took care of that problem. Aside of the size and shape of my cookies, this gadget saves a lot of time. Squeeze the handle and the dough comes out easily. It is very comfortable work with as well. I have also used this thing to form meatballs. Even the ground beef comes out of the scoop perfectly. Having this makes baking and cooking so much easier and so much fun.

It makes a small size cookie scoop that is easy to dislodge mushy cookie doughs. For stiffer doughs, it produces a shaving from the scoop mechanism inside the scooper. That can become cumbersome when you have to pick up the shaving after every scoop. It is a keeper, feels solid and durable.

I bought this to make cookies, and also for when I make matzoh balls, and it is alittle too large for that, so I also bought the medium sized one. Both work the same, and both work very well, and really do cut down on your time. I also like to make things like cookies in uniform size, and this does that. I have very small hands, but I had no problem using this, and it did not hurt my hands, at all.

I own all three sizes of cookie scoops that OXO offers. I sell cookies and use the medium size scoop for most of what I bake. I occasionally use the small scoop but find the size to be more suited to samples or holiday gift sets. I find the large scoop, on the other hand, a bit too big.
I have always trusted the OXO brand and this product has not let me down so far. The scoop is well made, easy to use and fairly ergonomic. This product is a must if you desire consistently-sized cookies!
If I had to own just one scoop, I would buy the medium, but all of them are great and useful depending on your needs.

I love this cookie scoop! My least favorite part of making cookies used to be scooping the dough onto the pan because it took so long since the dough would stick onto the spoon and my fingers.
Now, it's much easier and takes less than 5 minutes to fill a pan with even dough balls. I make cookies every week or two - mostly chocolate chips and coconut macaroons - and my boyfriend loves it!
Note, to wash the scoop, I found that it should be soaked a bit (5-10minutes) in warm water to get the sugar and dough out of some of the hard to clean areas.

My Oxo scooped its last cookie this week. After nearly weekly use for just over three years, the little gear at the end cracked and the scoop no longer releases the dough. I pressed it into service a few extra weeks by using it to portion the dough and then digging the dough out with a teaspoon. The best thing about the scoops is the repeatability-every cookie is the exact same size and shape. If you fill the scoop up and then level it off by scraping off the excess on the rim of the bowl it makes a nice flat bottom dough ball that spreads evenly and predictably. The large scoop makes a pretty generous cookie; recipes claiming to make 4 dozen typically only make three dozen or so. The medium scoop is best for more reasonable sized cookies. I don't have the small scoop but I would imagine it would be too small for dropping cookies.

The scoops we found in department stores are either too small, or two big. This scoop is the perfect size to make drop cookies, and the rubberized grips are very comfortable. Exactly what we expect from OXO.
