Oxo Good Grips 9-Inch Locking Tongs with Nylon Headsx$7.95

(78 reviews)

Best Price: $7.95

These tongs are handy for flipping a chicken breast, for turning shrimp in the pan, pulling an open-faced tuna melt sandwich out from under the broiler and so on. Thanks to their nylon ends they can be safely used with non-stick cookware!

Not only do these 9-inch tongs cushion hands and provide thumb rests, which are useful when gripping heavy objects, but the nylon heads won’t scratch nonstick cookware. Doubling as a hang loop, a tab on the bottom pulls out to lock the stainless-steel tongs shut, allowing them to slip easily into a drawer. The nylon heads are heat-resistant to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and the tongs are dishwasher-safe. --Ann Bieri MPN: 1054627 - UPC: 719812003733

  • These tongs work very well, but.......

    By A1LVW3BOWGX2FB on 2005-09-09
Care must be taken when cooking over moderately high heat. I'm not talking about leaving the tongs in the pan, but cases where the tongs graze the hot pan bottom. The nylon tip guards will, I'm sorry to say, easily melt. Perhaps the next great step by Oxo will be the use of silicone for those edges that are likely to melt.

  • One of the most versitile - travels from kitchen to grill

    By AQL0JJY3M3FXJ on 2004-10-04
I have had several tongs sets given to me, both for kitchen and grill. None of which have done a good enough job for me to keep them. THIS one, however, has been a Godsend. I use these both in my kitchen with my cast iron as well as out on the grill. They pick up even the heaviest of of pork loins while at the same time allowing me to turn over some more delicate items. I can saute, turn, pluck, pinch, and grab.

One of the best "surprise" features it has is the lock. It keeps its lock - even in the dishwasher. It is, as the same time, smooth and adjustable enough for me to unlock them with one hand if needed (and at the grill, this comes in QUITE handy!).

    COMPLETELY dishwasher safe.

They are indespensible to me, and I am going to invest in a few more to have around the house. What more could you ask for?

  • I can't believe that I am reviewing tongs. I can't cook!

    By A33TRNCQK4IUO7 on 2004-01-30
This is my very first non-entertainment related purchase as I can barely boil water so kitchen stuff is not usually on the things to buy list; notwithstanding most of the cookware/utensils that I have are OXO as they tend to be of excellent quality and easy on the hands.

For the first time since I left home, I actually purchased tongs as I've always seen how my mom usse them all the time to move "stuff" around with much ease. So I got the babies and they are awesome. No more trying to turn over food in the oven and fearing first degree burns if you don't happen to grab the food well.

The tongs are really sturdy, lock easily to take less space, and the nylon heads don't destroy your teflon as metal ones tend to. They also stand up to a lot of heat so they don't melt.

These won't change your life but if you need tongs these are awesome. Now if OXO could make something to make me a cook.

  • Buy these!

If you're looking for a great set of tongs, look no further. I just love these things. I have a terrible habit of burning my hands but with the rubber coating on these, I don't ever burn myself. They're great for flipping everything from fish to burgers on the grill, or the grilled veggies. They make a fantastic toy too and easily withstand going from the grill, to the dishwasher, to the hands of a wiley boy with no problems. Great product!

  • They work great and save my pots and pans!

    By AFISR38PWJE3R on 2004-01-22
I have the same tongs with metal heads and always gingerly pick up whatever I'm cooking for fear of scratching my pots and pans. I usually end up getting stung by popping oil more often than not because of this. But with these bad boys, there's no fear of scratching so it sames me and my cookware!

  • great tool in the kitchen
    By A2NUBEC0RKT7ND on 2005-06-22
I've researched a lot and There aren't many with the nylon heads. This one is the best and most sturdy, best made.
If you are learning to cook stir frys and such, use this instead of the heat resistant spatualas. I've had them melt even though they've said they won't.

  • They broke after first use yet oxo hooked me up with new ones
    By A3JMBODD7KN4WI on 2006-08-02
I bought these because of their high amazon ratting. My tongs broke...The spring device used to open and close them is now jutting out off the handle and pokes you, and now they are unuseable..I contacted oxo and they sent me knew ones with ease.

  • Great Product, Great Price
    By A4JVF84UWPH80 on 2005-08-17
These tongs by OXO are very functional and safe to use on non-stick cookware. I highly recommend these to anyone who, like me, uses non-stick pans. If you watch cooking shows, you will see these tongs being used by the chefs there too.

  • Don't want to go back!
    By A19V3DIOXYBAWW on 2005-12-16
These have become a must have in my kitchen! They are perfect for flipping things and the nylon heads make them safe to use with non-stick pans.

Only negative is that they will melt if you leave them in an empty pan on high heat for too long, so they might not work well for camping. I was able to get the melted plastic out of the pan and the tongs are still very usable :-) Even so, I'd buy these again in a heartbeat.

  • Wonderful product
    By A3LDQM3GCURG92 on 2006-02-10
These tongs are easy on the hands and grip food well. I have the All Clad tongs too and while they are more beautiful, these run rings around them based on ease of use. They operate very smoothly and I am never concerned about dropping food. I use these mainly for my nonstick skillet, but they get used in my other skillets as well.

  • Takes the heat like them better than the solid metal ones
    By A2OGVAQIMM2D7E on 2006-08-02
Feels good in the hand. Love the locking mechanism. You push in the hang loop/tab at the bottom and it opens them. Very easy, just press the tab on the counter or against your knee and it opens. Pull out to close and store easily. It surprised me that even when I was frying chicken pieces, the nylon didn't 'morph', but I didn't push it by keeping them in the oil for more than a second or 2. The tab has a hole so you can hang them on a hook. Very pleased, my favorite tongs.

  • OXO's tongs good, but not best
    By ABJV3Q74N96RL on 2007-02-26
These are great tongs; the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the nylon heads don't grip so well when you are turning wet or greasy foods. Slipping when you are trying to turn a steak can be a big mess! I bought the regular steel tongs and they work perfectly.

  • Just what I was looking for!
    By A113704YDTZMJ8 on 2005-09-21
I've been looking for a set of tongs to use in my expensive non-stick cookware. Something I wouldn't have to worry about my husband using and scratching the pans up. These are PERFECT!!

  • My favorite tongs
    By A2OGVAQIMM2D7E on 2006-08-27
I've been cooking a LONG time, some 30+ years and these are my fav's. The nylon head holds up in the heat, just don't abuse them by leaving them in the bottom of a flaming hot pan, come on use common sense. And I love the quick/smooth reacting tab to open the tongs. I bump them against my knee or the counter and they open neatly, not snapping open like others. AND I like how they close, very, very easy to pull with your teeth. I know that sounds weird, but you'd do it too! It is gentle and I like using both hands for...whatever. They handle like...a BMW. Enjoy!

  • fantastic tongs!
    By A3E228LX9A46H4 on 2006-11-09
These are fantastic tongs! They are the perfect length, have a smooth operation and that nylon coating on the tips is a great addition. I bought them to use in my George Foreman grill and other non stick cookware, but have found myself reaching for them instead of my tradtional tongs. Highly recommend them - great price, quality product!

  • GOOD GRIPPER
    By A28X8T3Q0SVFX8 on 2006-09-11
Fit nicely in the hand, thin enough gripping end to crasp thin, small items..with locking feature, fit into drawer...all around=excellant. Also, light weight. Good buy!

  • Great Tongs
    By A1YUL9PCJR3JTY on 2007-02-05
    *****
These tongs are sturdy, and great for all tong tasks. I use mine for picking up bacon and turning it over, and because the edges are nylon, it won't scratch the pan. They are a great alternative to the cheap aluminum tongs that feel flimsy and break easily. OXO products, including this one, are always easier to use and of high quality.

As others have mentioned, they store easily in a smaller space because of the locking mechanism at the top and they have a loop if you want to hang them. They clean easily, too. I haven't had any problems with hot temperatures on the tips, but I wouldn't use them for barbequeing either for fear of the nylon + flames = no more tongs. They should be good to go for any indoor kitchen task not involving an open flame.

Note that OXO makes these particular tongs in the 9 inch and the 12 inch size. Both are great!

  • Great tongs!
    By A16I6WJUEBJ1C3 on 2007-10-13
I went through many years of cooking without having tongs for kitchen use (did use them for BBQ) and I did not think I needed any. I needed a filler item and purchased these. These tongs are great! I have used them much more than I expected. I have the 9" size which is great for general kitchen use and compact enough to store in my gadget drawer. I wanted tongs that would not scratch my nonstick cookware and these are just right. The nylon heads work fine and I have not had any issues with them melting from heat. They are comfortable to use. I use the tongs for turning items during pan frying and oven roasting and for tossing spaghetti and long noodles with sauce and serving.

  • the best tongs i've ever bought...
    By A1ZCO33NI43AK0 on 2006-03-17
hands down the best non-stick tongs I've ever purchased. Definitely worth the money!

  • Easy to use and clean
    By A12T81PR7TM2Q6 on 2006-04-24
All of my cookware is Calphalon, so I have to be careful about what kind of utensils I use. These tongs are fantastic! They grip the food very well and have a nice, wide gripping surface so larger pieces of food won't rip or tear when being handled. The construction is nice and solid, and I've put them through the dishwasher a number of times, without getting rust spots (like I do with my cheaper metal tongs).

My only problem is with the mechanism for locking the tongs. There is a metal/rubber tab at the top of the tongs, which pushes in to unlock and pulls out to lock. If I'm busy in the kitchen, many times I will only have one hand available for stirring or moving something. I can easily unlock the tongs one-handed by holding the middle of the tongs and pressing the tab against the counter. I can't lock the tongs by pulling the tab out unless I use two hands. The tongs are so large when opened, that just leaving them open on the counter is not an option. I'm not sure how they could be redesigned to remedy that situation, but it does make things inconvenient sometimes.

  • My Other Hand!
    By A1MZEMD0EDETS6 on 2006-12-30
What can I say? I have 3 of these. The nylon tips won't scratch your non-stick surfaces. I like the 12 inch so hot oil doesn't bite me. Every cook ought to have this!! They are not expensive---I love Oxo!

  • Top quality
    By AQRIFGIQJ2ZE0 on 2007-01-15
Excellent tongs. Because of the grips, they just don't slip in your hands as the others seem to want to. Nice locking mechanism, although it would be better if it were the automatic type so it doesn't require 2 hands. Also, with the nylon tips, I don't worry about scratching any non-stick surfaces. Nice product. A quick favorite.

  • These are a great tool
    By A3ONHUD8TTSKT3 on 2007-01-19
They work great. Although, don't use them on the barbeque or the nylon coating on the end will melt (not completely, but there's a wierd little chunky misshapen part now). Doesn't really affect how they work.

  • Nice, but the rust still happens.
    By A2PLGB52VCSYHG on 2007-02-02
I keep buying tongs - so much that you would think I have some sort of addiction to purchasing them. But what I'm really looking for is a pair that does not rust at the hinge.

I thought these would do it, but nope, there was mild rusting at the hinge after the first trip through the dishwasher.
Other than that they're nice - maybe a bit long for my taste. I would buy shorter ones next time.

  • 7.99 s affordable and a nice design
    By AXO4PQU0XG3TG on 2007-02-24
The old design of locking tongs had a ring that would fall over and prevent the tongs from opening. The design flaw is that the ring is not held up when the tongs are in use so the ring would plop over and lock the tongs on its own. These tongs are an improvement in that the locking mechanism is pull up. I would prefer that the nylon heads had a higher temperture tolerance.

  • You may need two!
    By A5PN726QGV9EG on 2007-07-25
I have found the Oxo line of kitchen tools to be one of the best out today. One reason is that my mother has arthritis and therefore finds it easier to work with the Oxo products. Another reason is that my husband has much larger hands and finds the Oxo tools much more comfortable. Me? I enjoy the quality and features each have.

I can only give this four stars, because invariably I have found that when I go to use them, my husband or mother have already abscounded with them-- therefore, if you share your home with others who like to cook, you really need at least two.

But the few times I have worked with them have been lovely. The pin at the top is very easy to push in to release the tongs and they lock very easily when not in use. I find that my hold onto my food is very secure. They clean like a dream. My husband really likes them for his BBQ, which is why I almost have to wrestle them out of his hands. We've had our tongs for about two years, and they've held up well. And now that our son is learning to cook himself, I may break down and get yet another one for him.

So if you are looking for a gift for a foodie-- or yourself-- consider getting one or two of these tongs. They are wonderful!

  • tongs
    By A1LYMJSXJV1IJQ on 2007-11-06
These are great-small enough to work well in small frying pans.I almost like them more than a standard spatula.

  • Great kitchen tool
    By A1I9TY5XBZRDEM on 2007-11-18
I had three pairs of not-entirely-satisfactory tongs in my kitchen that I wanted to replace. These OXO tongs are top-rated by America's Test Kitchen, and the review there pointed out that they have a gentle scallop that won't tear delicate foods.

These are great! They come with either metal or nylon heads - I opted for the nylon so as not to scratch non-stick surfaces (I may get a metal pair later since one reviewer mentioned they can melt with high heat). The ring at the top pulls up to lock them closed, so they store easily in a drawer. They are dishwasher safe, so clean up is a snap. They are very comfortable in the hand and the rubber inserts in the handle make for a good grip. The tongs handle a heavy steak easily, and the slightly cupped heads provide a sure grip on food. They also have the dexterity to pick up lighter items such as garlic toast.

A great item at a reasonable price!

  • Best tongs out there
    By A159IGE3AGVKT1 on 2007-12-18
I love these tongs...what more can I say? They are my # 1 go-to tool in the kitchen. I have the 9 & 12-inch versions, but if I had to go with one, I would recommend the larger one - it's a littler more versatile, but they are both fabulous to have. I scarcely cook a meal without busting these bad boys out... I love them, and you will too!

This is a quality product at a reasonable price. I use the tongs everyday and find they are the most used utensil I have.
    Buy them.
