  No extra AC power cord needed. My DVD player in my laptop went out and the laptop manufacturer wanted $450 for an in-case proprietary replacement. I use the DVD player a lot on the plane and unless I'm in first class, don't have power. This one runs off the USB power. It's very slim and not bulky. Just what I needed. I only have one question. Why don't they sell this thing in computer retail stores. It's a winner!

  As a CD RW, it's fine, probably 4 stars. But like a fool, I read the reviews and two of the highest ratings came from people who that they were replacing DVD drives with this Targus CD-ROM.
  
  One implied that he has watched movies while on plane trips. If so, it wasn't a video that he'd bought. I inferred that. Another said that his laptop DVD went out on him, and he replaced it with this. Again, I inferred that he could also use it for watching DVDs.
  
  Now I'll return this, and take my lumps because I'm not spending more than $83 to watch a DVD and all my CD drives work just fine.

  I was so pleased to have a CD ROM drive again (the one built in to my computer died ages ago). This little number is great! Absolutley reliable, perfect XP compatibility, and the USB connection makes it so easy -- no extra power cords.

  Recently decided to use my dvd slot on my thinkpad t60p for another hard-drive. This external slimline dual dvd writer runs off my usb port: the included power adapter is not required for newer machines. I did a lot of research, this looks like the best product out there for slimline dvd writers that can be powered of the machine itself

  Bottom line, this product works exactly as advertised, no external power supply, light weight and slim. I have an "ultra portable" ThinkPad X60. The DVD only comes with the docking station. This product fills the gap so I can access CD and DVD drives when traveling without adding a lot of weight to my backpack. It consists of the drive and a special cable that plugs into two USB ports to draw the power necessary to operate, quite clever IMHO. And one of them is a pass thru so you only "lose" one port.

  My Dell desktop cd-drive stopped working and I needed to install Turbotax. I ordered the Targus based upon mostly positive reviews and the fact it didnt need a power cord.
  
  I received the drive in 2 days from Amazon, and from the time I opened the Targus box, I was installing turbotax in less than 60 seconds! The product works as advertised with no hassles at all. Strongly recommend.

  Good value for the price.
  Only drawback is that my laptop could not supply
  enough power for the drive to work reliably, even
  with power from 2 USB ports. Had to buy an external

  This is a too expensive product. You should think how many times you may use it before you buy it. Actually, I bought it 2 months ago and used only 2 times. Maybe, it is better to buy CD/DVD reader instead of burner (writer).

  This device does exactly what I wanted. I own a HP tc4200 tablet pc that came without a dvd drive. This addition has enabled me to completely close the gap and it is extremely portable and convenient for travel. I strongly recommend.

  The CD drive on my six year old Dell pooped out for no apparent reason and rather than spend big money to replace or fix it or replace the entire system, I tried this as a quick fix. It works fine and saved me time, money and stress.I made a good choice and am very pleased.

  Do not waste your money on this. I purchased it to use with my Cortex Digital Controller and it will not work. Very flimsy tray also.

  This worked great for me, I haven't tried the dvd playback yet but it reads cd's nicely. I didn't have to install anything. I would have liked it to write dvd's, but I already have an internal dvd-r so this was fine for what it is. I once had an issue with a targus product and they sent me a new part for free with the shipping. It ended up being a good experience so I went with the name as well as the product on this one.

  I recently bought a HP 2133 mini notebook which does not have a cd/dvd player internally. I decided this was the best thting to purchase because it does not require external power, you only need to plug it into a USB outlet on the computer.
