Sleep Well: Finding the Right Sleeping Bag
Sleeping bag technology has come a long way from the days of cowboy bedrolls. These days, there are a number of high-tech materials and designs available to keep you warm during the coldest outings. Here's a short list of things to keep in mind when you're shopping for a bag:

Buy for Cold
It's a safe bet that on at least one of your adventures, the nighttime temperature will drop unexpectedly. That's why it's smart to buy a bag that's rated for the lowest possible temperature you expect to face on your camping and backpacking trips. For summer trips, a bag rated at +35 degrees or higher will likely do the trick. If you like to camp in higher elevations in the summer, or if spring and fall outings are in your future, consider bags rated from +10 to +35. Winter adventurers should look for bags in the -10 to +10 range, while those on serious winter alpine climbs and expeditions will want a bag rated lower than -10.

Keep in mind that sleeping bag manufacturers' temperature ratings only estimate the minimum temperature at which the bag will provide warmth. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, as different folks generate different amounts of heat when they sleep. If you're the type who likes to pile on the covers even on warmer nights, go for a bag that's rated ten degrees colder. The opposite is true for "warm" sleepers--a 35-degree bag will probably work for you on a 25-degree night.

Goose or No Goose?
The most important component of any sleeping bag is its insulating material. Modern sleeping bags offer two choices: goose down or synthetic. While both materials have advantages and disadvantages, down bags are considered superior because of their phenomenal warmth-to-weight and warmth-to-bulk ratios. While providing great insulation, down is extremely compressible and light. There's a reason why geese can fly and stay warm through the winter! Down also boasts great long-term durability and will typically retain its insulating properties after years of use.

All of that said, there are many high-quality synthetic bags on the market and synthetic materials are getting better all the time. While a synthetic bag will weigh somewhat more than a down bag at an equivalent temperature rating, synthetic bags perform better when wet. (Yes, the Achilles heel of down is that it loses all insulating properties when wet.) If your trips take you to wet climates, you may want to consider a synthetic bag for this reason alone. Keep in mind, too, that many people are allergic to down--synthetic bags are non-allergenic. Finally, down is considerably more expensive than synthetic, which might tip the balance for adventurers on a budget.

Bags for All Shapes
Sleeping bags come in two basic shapes that reflect their intended use. Mummy-shaped bags offer the best warmth because they conform to the body's contours. This minimizes the amount of body heat the body must put out to maintain a constant temperature. Many mummy bags are offered in women-specific shapes and sizes, as well. Rectangular bags, while they do offer more room to toss and turn, are less thermally efficient because they contain more open air space. Also, they are typically heavier than mummy bags, and are generally not offered with down insulation, making them best suited for car camping or short backpacking trips.

Pad Yourself
No matter what kind of bag you choose, a sleeping pad is a required accessory. Not only do they provide much-needed comfort when sleeping on the ground, pads also offer crucial warmth for your backside, as the weight of your body compresses--and renders virtually useless--the sleeping bag insulation that lies beneath you.

  • not a 25 degree bag

    By A21U4DR8M6I9QN on 2007-06-12
I am an old NW camper and needed a bag for several trips this summer. (2007)
This is a skimpy 2 pounds of fill bag. Comfortable at night with fleece pants and top at 40 degree nights.
I went camping at 3000 feet in June, wore polar fleece to bed, had to put on polar fleece jacket and hat at 1 am. Out side temp 35 degrees.
so this is good for very warm weather, RV camping, I was not comfortable and I am 5 '4 150 lbs and I found the bag tight.
spend a little more money if you are going to sleep out side, and yes i had a very good air mattrress.

This sleeping bag is very nice. I am pleased with the comfort, the warmth, the nice features, and the light weight for hiking. I recommend it to anyone that needs a nice bag that doesn't want to spend alot of money on one. A great value.

  • Nice bag

    By A2KEJIQFTO8O6P on 2007-03-14
I took this sleeping bag on a cold, chilly night in Tallahassee, FL. I went as low as 18 degrees, lower than the rated 25 degrees. It kept me warm all night and all I wore were two layers of PJ's.I dig the narrow design so it makes it easier to roll and tote. The only down side is that I am 6ft tall and I couldn't rap the mummy hoodie over my head.
My recommendation, buy it b/c for the price you can't loose.
I can't wait to take it out camping again at Terreya Park.

  • Great Buy!

After going to the store I was frustrated that the only bags available were either EXTREMELY expensive or poorly built. I knew that I wanted something that would last beyond a couple outings, but I wasn't going to pay an arm and leg for it. The zippers on these bags are GREAT (one of the most important features in a sleeping bag). The material is very light, but incredibly warm. The bags are also a snap to re-pack in their stuff bags. Did I mention these things are LIGHT? Highly recommended.

  • Great Bag For A Smaller Sleeper

    By AGZIVYQ3A2BHK on 2007-05-19
I bought this sleeping bag last year to go to Mississippi in November. It worked fine, was warm enough, and pretty comfortable. I'm 6'4" tall however, so it only worked well because it was used on top of a cot. If I had been on the ground, I might not have been so happy. I bought a bigger bag, but if you're less that 6 feet tall, you will LOVE this bag!

  • Happy w/ Bags

We bought 3 Coleman Taos bags for our kids ages 13, 13, and 11. For the price I was not expecting too much, but I was happily surprised. We have used the bags summer camping in Southern Oregon and Northern California. Temperatures at night were probably never below 40. The kids said they slept warm and comfortable. Bags stuff real small and the workmanship seems good.

  • An excellent value
    By A3SLC8F6VIWXIR on 2007-02-03
This sleeping bag completely met my expectations for it's price point. You can get similar performance in a lighter weight bag, but would pay much more for it. Great for routine camping, but a bit heavy for serious backpacking.

  • Good value
    By ACJMOQ6XPOROD on 2007-06-25
This is a great sleeping bag if you're not going into cold weather -- it is definitely not for 25 degree weather. I used it on a trip this past weekend and the temperature was around 40 degrees at night. Our tent was cold, and even inside the sleeping bag I was very cold (was wearing fleece pants & sweater).

The following night wasn't as bad, and the sleeping bag was fine. Since I don't plan on camping during 25 degree weather ever, this is perfect for my needs.

  • good insulation, bad packing
    By A1OCIK1Y2U84BN on 2007-08-31
It's tough to pack this sleeping bag back in its stuff sack. Also, its pack-size is much larger than I thought it would be.

  • toasty bag

the bag worked great on a recent camping trip.. kept my son warm with overnight lows in the 40s..

  • best value sleeping bag for the money
    By AFZOIQ5UU0SGA on 2007-07-12
I've been backpacking with this sleeping bag for the past 2 months. It is great and it didn't hurt my wallet. It is light, relatively small stuff sack (you'd have to pay $100 for a smaller sack) and most importantly it is warm and durable.

  • Coleman Sleeping Bag
    By A3TYSYWPSF3KDW on 2008-01-07
Bought this for our 6-yr. old grandson who plans to use it for his sleepovers. He tried it out for a few nights during the holidays and thought it was pretty cool. It is well constructed but the storage bag could be a little bigger. We did eventually get it all packed in, but it wasn't easy! Other than that, it's a good product at a good price.

  • Not a 25 degree bag or meant for tall people.
    By A2AWUM32L783DJ on 2007-06-13
I bought this bag and found that it was not long enough for me. I am 6'2" and could not completely fit in the bag. The ratings for these bags are pretty weak. I have found if you want to camp in 30 degree weather, you need a 0 degree bag. This bag was the same. It was comfortable, but only kept my mid-section warm. The rest of me was pretty cold. I gave this to the wife as she doesn't camp as much and is smaller. She used it once and found that it did not keep her as warm either. I would say that if you are planning on camping in under 40 degree temps, find another bag, otherwise it was ok for the price.

  • Great for the price

Wanted a lightweight, durable and inexpensive bag for my son to take on a three week hike on trails in warm weather. This fit the bill perfectly and it returned ready for the next trip. He was happy. I am too.

  • Great Sleeping Bag
    By A3FH3VMC7PSMMD on 2007-09-03
With my son being an avid camper, the less bulk and weight he needs to carry on scout trips, the better! He loves this sleeping bag ... it's nice and compact and loves the fact that he can 'stuff' it into the compression sack vs. having to fold and roll it neatly before tying it together, etc. Very warm, attractive looking sleeping bag. Wouldn't hesitate to purchase another if needed or recommend this mummy bag to others.

  • Warm sleeping bag

This sleeping bag will be great for my husband when he's camping. Well made and seems durable.

  • Coleman had done it again in making an excellant product.

Weight is fine for my AT hikes. Fits nicely in my backpack and can deal with a one heavier because I really like the size and comfort.

  • Toasty warm
    By A1QFNNFQKSZND7 on 2008-03-23
My son loves his new sleeping bag, especially the fact that he can unzip the feet when he gets too warm.

  • Comfy and Warm
    By A3QGBVR9E5CRBZ on 2008-04-19
Very warm sleeping bag, I did buy an cotton lining though b/c it is unlined and gets a little sweaty

  • Good sleeping bag
    By A1ZQKFQMV4WC46 on 2008-08-30
The sleeping bag is warm and comfortable. I fit perfectly in it at 6 feet tall. I would not recommend it for anyone taller.
