At 14.25 by 11.59 by 1.8 inches and a comparatively hefty 9.3 pounds, HP's new Pavilion zd7180us Notebook PC may be too cumbersome for those who commonly carry their notebook on their daily journeys. However, the unit is otherwise a wonderful fit for anyone who needs the luxuries and extreme power of a high-end desktop PC in a portable format. Featuring a potent processor, awesome mobile 3-D performance, wireless connectivity, and a breathtaking oversized display, the Pavilion zd7180us is a stunningly capable desktop replacement.

A computer is only as fast as its processor will allow, and the Pavilion zd7180us sports a blazing 3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 with an 800 MHz front side bus and Intel's new Hyper-Threading technology for increased performance during demanding operations such as complex multitasking. HP has added a whopping 1024 MB RAM memory (double that of the vast majority of similar top-of-the-line notebooks) and a high-end nVidia GeForce Fx Go 5600 graphics controller with 128 MB of dedicated video memory. With this level of power at your command, you'll find precious few tasks you can't efficiently operate. The unit will even handle the latest 3-D games, a rarity in the world of notebooks.

When the business day ends, you'll want to keep the Pavilion zd7180us close by. Sporting a massive 17-inch WXGA+ WVA TFT display (in widescreen format and supporting resolutions up to 1440 by 900) and built-in Harman/Kardon speakers, the unit is ready to lend impressive sound and visuals to everything from 3-D games to the latest DVD movies. Furthermore, you can store oodles of programs and data on the system's generous 80 GB hard disk, and burn all manner of audio and video files to digital media on the integrated DVD+R/RW/CD-RW drive.

With the Pavilion zd7180us, future connectivity is assured. The system features no less than four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for linking with external peripherals such as scanners and optical drives, one FireWire port for fast data transfers with high-tech toys such as digital camcorders, an S-Video TV-Out, and an integrated 5-in-1 Digital Reader for transferring information from today's most common memory cards. Communication facilities are thorough, including a v.90 dial-up modem, 10/100Base-T Ethernet, and 54g Integrated 802.11 b/g Wireless technology for those times when you just can't plug in.

HP has bundled a wide range of pre-installed software, including Microsoft's new Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system, Microsoft's Works productivity suite, Quicken's New User Edition financial center, and a variety of multimedia and online utilities.

  • One most poorly designed notebooks on the market

    By AYG5QTVJ3F5BB on 2006-02-06
When I bought my HP Pavillion ZD180 Notebook I was excited about the HT technology and the allure of power that suggested.
I soon became disgusted with the design flaw of this notebook, both intake air vents and fans (needed to cool these hot running twin processors) are situated on the bottom of the device. Because this model has an oversized display screen, and a very hungry pair of top end Intel 4's, the battery after boot-up will power device for 2 hours maximum. The fact that you can not use this laptop on your lap makes it a notebook computer,at least that was the official word from HP when 3 months after purchase motherboard melted and HP had it back for a 100% re-fit.
Although the service was fast, free and professional, the design flaws outweighed the speed capable by this firecracker of a "NOTEBOOK".
I call it a firecracker because is races but quickly is a memory.
