How many ways can you count from 1 to 20? The folks at Sesame Street know them all and run through them several times in this delightful, funny, and educational half-hour video. Big Bird and Count Onetwothree are the hosts of this takeoff on "The Tonight Show," in which Big Bird (as our Johnny Carson stand-in) introduces numbers and the Sesame Street folks act them out. Learning About Numbers is a mixture of original material and skits and songs from Sesame Street. A personal favorite: Kermit the frog as a passenger on an elevator operated by the Count, who keeps passing Kermit's floor because he loves counting the numbers so much. --Marshall Fine MPN: SMVD51275D - UPC: 074645127590

  • Classic Sesame Street!

    By A1QK7J7OXLHJK6 on 2004-01-14
If you grew up watching Sesame Street, then you will LOVE having this video for your kids. You will recognize many of the songs and skits. No, it is not as flashy and digital as modern Sesame Street, but that's a good thing, in my opinion. If your children watch a lot of TV, their attention span might not allow them to watch this video. If you prefer to use TV/videos sparingly, like we do, your kids will love it as much as you will. I just hope they put this on DVD!

  • One of the best of the Sesame Street videos

    By on 1999-12-29
This video has a few of the very best clips from Sesame Street ever---like the one where cats go in a dollhouse and knock down the little cups, and the one where a ball goes down an elaborate roller coaster setup, and then is ground up into smaller balls which go on ice cream sundaes! My boys love to watch this. My only problem with it is Big Bird's try at acting like Johnny Carson---it's out of character. He acts nothing like his regular personality in the between clips part of this video, and that's a little annoying, but not terribly so.

  • Learning about numbers

    By on 2000-02-14
This video contains some great number cartoons. Too muchemphasis on the late show format and other "plot"elements. (Big bird's song about the number 4 may bring back fond memories, but it doesn't teach much) My 2 year-old consistently loses interest in this video after about 10 minutes.

  • Good for beginners

    By A154IP7K7KUPUV on 2001-12-05
This is standard Sesame Street, pre-Elmo. Big Bird is the host of a game show that introduces numbers through clips and songs. My little one doesn't seem to like thistape, she wanders from the TV whenever it's on but for the child of the '70's this is the tape to have from the king in the castle to the martian girl.

  • Toddlers LOVE this video

    By A3RX5RMRAJ8Z5B on 2003-12-16
I am a daycare provider. My daycare kids just love this video.I had this one for my daughter when she was a toddler and she loved it then too. The kids love to sign and dance to the number videos and all my kids can count to 20. This video makes learning fun. There is a part where two cats walk through a doll house. My kids laugh so hard at it.

  • A huge disappointment...
    By A119YBIAGOS6XI on 2006-08-21
I grew up watching Sesame Street and truly love the Muppets. However, I have to say this video was not what I expected. There were some great vintage clips, but not enough muppets/monsters for me. This video seemed hastily thrown together with bad editing. I would recommend you pass on this one and get "123 Count With Me" instead.

  • A Change of Pace
    By on 2003-01-05
At first, my children showed little interest in this video because they are used to watching the more modern, computerized visual effects now used on Sesame Street. But, after watching it a few times, they are showing much more interest in it. There are many sesame street classics in this video that are enjoyable and my son has learned to count better, but the reason why my children tend to lose interest is because too much time and emphasis is put on Big Bird's role as a talk show host.

  • The Funniest Tape In the History of Sesame Street
    By on 2005-07-13
This was always my favorite tape. The fact that they had the Sesame Street characters make the kids learn the numbers. My two favorite scenes were 1 when the Count was being an elevator operator and while trying to get Kermit to the 7th floor of the building the Count was counting the floor numbers and went past 7 and Kermit got extremely paranoid and even more nervous when the Count skipped the 7th floor second time around. 2. When the Count took Ernie to his house so he can help him out and the Count tells Ernie to answer the phone while he searches for something to count. The phone rings and the count decides to count the number of rings while Ernie tries to pick up the phone. The COunt refused to let Ernie answer the phone because he wanted to count the rings and when Ernie finally gets to the phone, the person that called had hung up already and the Count claimed that Ernie wasn't fast enough and Ernie replys "Well Count you wouldn't let me answer the phone.

  • Great "Best Of" Sesame Street Collection
    By AWN0C9XCVQS1W on 2006-01-03
I was surprised to find out how lame Sesame Street has become when turning it on for the first time as an adult in 2002. Jim Henson is sorely missed. I'm grateful for the SS DVDs. This counting one is great, it's a collection of classic SS skits, with Big Bird introducing each clip in kind of a stand-up comic type role. We especially like the one where the ball goes through the "roller coaster" track, and the skits with the Count. Very funny, simple, and wholesome entertainment. Teaches counting too, of course.

  • This is what Sesame Street is all about!
    By A2IYCW7FG88FOY on 1998-05-11
This, along with "Learning About Letters", is like taking a trip back in time. You don't have to be a child to love these. Many favorite songs and sketches from the classic years are here. A highlight is 1974's "I Just Adore Four". Definitely for all serious Sesame Street fans! END

  • Great, but why does this need a regional code?!?
    By A3ACTHAU1JXUSA on 2006-07-25
My daughter loves the DVD, although the lower numbers are definitely a bit boring--for both of us! Unlike one of the other Sesame Street DVDs we have, this one forces you to watch a minute-long spiel on how the money used to buy the DVD goes to support children's programming all over the world. I can't get my computer to skip over it. Which brings me to the next point: WHY is there a regional code on this and other Sesame Street DVDs? I'm in Germany, and I have to watch these on my computer instead of TV because some schmo at Sony thought the DVD should only be viewable in North America? How does Sony or anyone else benefit from this? There are millions of Americans living abroad who want their children to see these, and the regional coding just results in fewer people buying the product. Sigh... Anyway, it's very good, and Elmo-free.

  • cute video
    By A1L98HQ5EIZC1O on 2003-01-05
My son just turned 3. He recently started watching this video and he really likes it. He already knew how to count to 20 but this made it more interesting. In my opinion, this tape has some cute clips with alot of variation. Different from other counting tapes. The host is Big Bird and the Count. Ernie, Grover, Kermit, The Honkers and other classic Sesame Street people are also included. I have three other counting tapes from Babys First Impressions, Watch N Learn and one other Sesame Street counting tape. This Learning About Numbers is by far my sons favorite. I even enjoy listening to the tunes!

  • not what we expected
    By ABHKQUXW03CR2 on 2007-02-08
Ordered this for my 2 year old. I didn't realize it was only about the number 2. I thought it was learning about numbers, part 2 and would involved numbers one through 10. So perhaps this was my mistake. Gets a bit tedious. My 2 year old got bored with it, because he also expected it to cover other numbers.

  • I love Sesame Street from the past
    By A1G1KQRA6N8Y3H on 2006-03-05
Learning About Numbers was purchased for my granddaughter Lydia.
She is totally fascinated and stops and stays in one spot for the duration of the DVD, which is about 1 half hour. Lydia is 21 months old. She tries to sing and count and she laughs in certain spots. Her mother reacted the same way in the early 70's when she was a small child. It is education at it's sneakiest.

  • My One-And-A-Half Year Old Loves It.
    By on 1999-01-17
They do an excellent job teaching numbers through entertainment. The skits are clever, the timing is paced appropriately for little ones to absorb what is going on and the sound effects are gripping. It is definitely fun to watch. The only thing we didn't enjoy was a little bit of canned laughter.

  • A great compilation of classic Sesame Street "bits."
    By A38P2Z1DCYPUTQ on 1999-01-23
Big Bird hosts the program in an obvious emulation of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. A great compilation of classic Sesame Street "bits" interlaced with some fun live-action Muppet sequences. My 21 month old daughter learned to count to 10 one week after starting to watch this.

  • Fun for mom and son
    By A2R2JVO0SFK5SB on 2007-07-01
My 19 month old son LOVES this video, and he has begun counting things with great enthusiasm since we started watching it. A number of short clips, about two for each number from one to ten, are strung together as part of a mock talk show hosted by Big Bird. Most of the clips are from the Golden Era of Sesame Street--pre 80s, pre-Elmo-crap--some are edgy, some are clever, all are entertaining to people of both generations. Highly recommended.

My baby loves it. I hate using the "electronic babysitter", but it gives me a much-needed moment's peace sometimes.

  • Funny
    By A2ZX94BX3QRU66 on 2006-08-20
Sesame Street does it again with a program that can be watched with equal entertainment value by both adults and children. That is, if the adult is old enough to have seen the Johnny Carson Show. I am, so I found it highly entertaining. Nathan (18 mo) found the skit about the dollhouse amusing, and liked the sitar music in the 1-10 skit, roller coaster and dancing chickens, etc. I like them, too, and the animation and music are great in every skit. Sesame Street Workshop produces some very creative work, and we need more like it.

  • Best Sesame Street Video Out There
    By A37PQ4SBTC2H23 on 2007-03-20
This is a favorite at our house with my 3 and 5 year old. They've loved watching it for the past 2 years, their favorite of the Sesame Street Videos. They adore the Dollhouse clip, and it brings back sweet memories from when I was watching that at 6 years old. It goes through each of the numbers 1 through 10 with a classic cartoon or live-action clip for each of the numbers. I'm not crazy about the "johnny carson show" part that Big Bird is doing to tie it all together, but that is minimal and the clips are more than worth it, teaching number CONCEPT. Counting to a number and seeing the numeral. Make sure you get this one. 30 minute video.

I own the combination videotape Learning About Numbers/ Learning to Add and Subtract. The second one teaches to add and subtract, a good overview and really good teaching in the live action spots with Big Bird and Maria (though Bird is a bit whiney). The clips aren't as memorable. Might as well get the combination if you can. But the Add/Subtract one gets 4 stars rather than 5. Also 30 minute video.

  • my son's favorite!
    By A8T3T876LRUH on 2007-06-18
My 22- month old LOVES this movie and we watch it all the time. I recognize a few skits from when I was little, and so does my mom. I grew up watching Sesame Street and I am glad for my son to watch this...they don't make kids cartoons like they used to!

  • Average product...
    By A2I9OI2HK4NYQU on 2007-10-01
While I like what Sesame Street does for children's television and education, this video falls short. The recycled number segments have been intertwined into a regular Sesame Street episode and thrown together, packaged and sold. My child is almost two and has a strong attention span, but she would lose interest a quarter to half way though the video. While watching the video with her, I believe some of the segments are odd to borderline creepy. LeapFrog vids are a worthy investment.

  • our toddler much preferred "1 2 3 count with me"
    By A1DQ3KRA6AD4KI on 2008-02-13
Our two-and-a-half year old didn't like "learning about numbers" at all, except for one little sequence that show 2 girls playing with a dollhouse. he much preferred "1 2 3 count with me." the two dvds are actually quite different: the other one features elmo and ernie and feels very much geared toward young children while "learning about numbers" actually seems like they were trying to entertain children and adults at the same time by adopting a mock talk show format where big bird is supposed to be some kind of jay leno standup. plus there is a lot of "The Count" in that LAN, and our toddler didn't like him at all--a kind of dracula knockoff that struck him as kind of distasteful and even scary. "1 2 3 Count With Me" a much better choice, for us at least, and possibly for all 2 year olds. Could be "learning about numbers" is better tolerated by older children. Only weakness to "1 2 3 count with me" is that they give short shrift or even skip over certain numbers between 1-20. Some kind of brainless editing decision by somebody who didn't get enought sleep, no doubt. but our child much preferred it to "learning about numbers" Also: "learning about numbers" subjects you to a hyperactive commercial for some Sesame Street foundation at the beginning and doesn't let you bypass it!

All my kids love Sesame Street. I love that they watch it and learn from them. I'd rather them watch Sesame Street than those Violent Japanese cartoons that teach our children violence instead of numbers and letters. These oldies but goodies should be in every house that has DVD's. You can't go wrong with Sesame Street, no matter what the title.
