Childhood memories re-lived! By A20QETTR8VAVW1 on 2005-12-15
Without giving away too much information on my advancement in years, I may say that I was a child of the 70's and recall with great fondness and slight nausea the intemperate consumption of many of the candies contained within this gift basket. At almost five pounds, this basket not only represents a good deal, but also the potential for hyperglycemic diabetic coma for the unaware and foolish. Of course, most of those who would actually be nostalgic for 70's candy would be in their thirties and forties, and thus have sense enough to not indulge to the point of fatality.
As I gleefully pulled out the contents of this basket I was struck by how many of these candies were either metaphors or candy copies of nonpharmaceutical and, in many cases, highly addictive and illegal drugs. The most obvious examples are the cigarette candies. Since when was cigarette smoking considered exemplary behavior to be modeled in candy form to encourage impressionable youngsters? Granted, they may be novelty candies and claim innocent fun, but I'm sure the Surgeon General would not be overly pleased at the kid-targeted promotion of a habit that increases both mortality and morbidity for millions and incurs health care costs in the billions. But that's not the worst of it. Can anyone claim that candy buttons are anything other than practice in the consumption of LSD blotter paper? Pixy Stix are long tubes filled with pixy dust, which in actuality is flavored sugar but metaphorically represents angel dust or PCP. Like PCP, pixy dust can be sprinkled on other confections to enhance their effects. Wax fangs are just softer versions of real fangs, and real fangs are used to pierce skin, just like hypodermic needles. Likewise, licorice pipes are only one step away from both marijuana and crack pipes.
Looking back at the candies of my youth I began to wonder of a possible conspiracy between confectioners and drug pushers (especially the tobacco companies). I seem to recall a shredded bubblegum product called "Big League Chew" and a cooked extract from unripe poppy seed pods called "Opium Den Smoke"--more evidence of a possible conspiracy and the perfect opportunity for the FBI to step in and apply the RICO statutes to bust this putative criminal collusion wide open.
Candy Is Old In More Ways Then One By A38AJKRTRCRASG on 2007-03-11
The Candy display looks very nice, good selection...it really does remind you of the best decade of all times....however all the chocolate candy was bad. Very old, white, hard as a rock and dried out...horrible condition. Didn't even have the courage to try the hard candy!!!!!!!!
Fun product but outrageous shipping charge By A68K30RGRHF05 on 2007-12-04
This and the other "decade" classic candy boxes are fun products and make great gifts.
Unfortunately the shipping charge, at approximately one-half the cost of the product itself, is outrageous.
I've ordered these in the past and was going to order another as a gift to a college student, but I simply no longer can justify the high shipping charge.

Awesome Gift Idea By ATQCWYSK76BOH on 2007-01-20
I got this for a good friend for Xmas, and she absolutely loved it. We opened the box and spent the next hour going through each item and laughing and telling stories and reminiscing about all this great candy from our childhood. The candy cigarettes were a real treat and there's so much in the box, it's amazing how they fit it all. Someone had reviewed that some of the candy was stale, but we didn't find that to be the case. I highly recommend this as a gift. I thought it was a great idea.
A favorite gift! By A3CSEY75FRTID0 on 2007-02-26
I sent this to my friend in California and she called me while eating one of the treats, screaming about how she loved her gift. She could not believe some of the items because she had not seen them since she was a child in the 70's. This gift brought back so many memories and we spend a few hours talking about her childhood.

I got several of these for relatives over the holidays. They were a huge hit. Sparked conversations about the candy and let us reminisce about the "old times". It was a great gift idea for many different occassions. I definitely would recommend to others.

I gave this for a Christmas gift to my daughter and son-in-law, who were both children in the 70's. They loved it. Comments were "what a fun gift, we spent all evening going through the box, our friends shared memories connected to some of the candiew, it was our favorite gift..." and many more. I will use it again as a gift for other children and relatives.

- Wow, Candy Cigarettes!
     By ATLRE6HQKABI9 on 2007-05-29
I got this for my mom on Mother's Day, and she loved it. They sure made some neat candy back then; a wide assortment of candies and bubble gum. Check out the candy in the "sack of gold." My delivery also arrived earlier than the estimated time, which is always a plus.
- Groovy Sugar!

This is a great product line!!!! The package included a great selection of candy that was popular during the 1970's. The box read "Do not open unless you were a child of the 1970's" This company offers selections from other decades as well. I gave this product as a gift along with a trivia game relating to food. It was a HUGE hit! The gift recipients recalled childhood memories while examining each piece of candy. I would also like to add, Target advertised this item, but it was unavailable for Christmas delivery. I was thrilled when I found it on Amazon.

There were three items I liked, many I didn't like and over half that I can't remember. I'm thinking that most of this stuff got discontinued for a reason. The thought was nice, and it's the thought that counts. But yeah, save your money and get something that's not lame
