Oster 4798 Electric Family-Size 6-Cup Arepamakerx$42.99
    (17 reviews)
Best Price: $54.99 $42.99
A South American treat, arepas most closely resemble biscuits but are made with corn flour or corn meal. It used to be a laborious process to make them by hand, but this electric arepa maker assures you have them quickly and easily, up to six at once! Extra large cavities are nonstick for easy cleanup. The handle locks for safety, and a ready light lets you know when they're cooked. The temperature control dial allows for light or dark arepas. Stand the unit upright for compact storage.

Not as good as traditional arepas... By A1XJF63JZ549P8 on 2006-01-22
I find that the arepas made w/the arepa maker come out w/"rubbery" centers, and they take a long time to be done. They toast nicely outside, but somehow the insides don't cook well. I'm wondering if I can find another use for this appliance, maybe for making pancakes? I think I will continue making arepas the traditional way, on a non-stick griddle on the stove.
Handy little must have. By A24RBELZ5HEDZY on 2006-08-12
This is great for arepas made from hominy. Add a little cheese to make them tasty, green pepper and onion ok too. This unit allows one to be a little creative. I added a little masa flour to the batter to thicken because the insides of the arepas do maintain moisture because of the sealing halves of the machine. They really seal. Add oil to help crispen the crust. You can cook them most of the way then put into the oven to finish but not necessary. I'm going to try and make salmon croquettes with crumbs on the crust. I will do this by cooking most of the way then finishing in the oven. Uhmm......Hardly can wait. I've read about crab cakes too. Sound good? You'll have to experiment if you want to do different things. I've done corn bread from yellow flour, added peppers and cheddar cheese to the basic batter for corn bread. The batter is wet just fill the bottom half of the machine and the corn bread will rise to meet the upper. Excellent! With the cheddar cheese and peppers.........yeh! Secret to good arepas is using the soaked hominy you mash or ground into the batter. Add water to thin and a little flour to get the batter like dry cooky dough......a little sticky. Just put gobs of the dough the size of a billiard ball. Make sure you added the grated cheese and mixed it in. Great with menudo, chile con carne or gumbo. Have fun!
Many Uses for the Arepa Maker By A38AVAA9DR1U2G on 2006-04-12
I have found that the Arepa Maker can be used for many things besides Arepas. It can be used to make Eggs,Hamburgers,Pancakes, Crab Cakes, Tuna Melt, Salmon Croquettes, Shortcake, Potato Cakes/Hash Browns,Circle Sandwiches - Kids will love to eat! Anything you can image.....
And also one trick, when you make the arepas, you can open them and scoop the inside and fill them with anything you can image....from ground meat, shredded meat to cheese, eggs...etc...That is how the real Venezuelans eat them.....!!!
Great product!! By AHV4BYTW0TGTC on 2006-08-26
Makes thin hot crisp arepas quickly and consistently.
I highly reccomend it.
I really like it By A3U7Q41SJ4PWI on 2006-12-07
Only used it one time but they came out perfectly. I did have Harina Pan, the real stuff, but it made life a lot easier to use the Arepamaker as opposed to grilling on the stove. If the appliance holds up and I have no reason to believe it won't, it appears very well made, I will be very happy. Pros, evenly sized nicely browned tasty arepas. Cons, took a long time to heat up, I never did see the yellow heat light turn green for go, next time I will wait and time it and perhaps add to this review. But for a first time test, I can safely say, buy one, you'll like it.

- The device made for Venezuelan...

It is great when you can find products like this here in Amazon to offer that product to your home in USA. This brand is the best for Arepas Makers ever. They developed this product for the Venezuela market but now is time to offer all the choices here in USA and Europe.
We are waiting for more options like 2 and 4 cup, black and white color options which are very popular for the customers there in Venezuela and people from Mexican, Colombian and others Latinos are waiting for those Osters choices here in USA and Europe. Whose do not like a very good Arepa?
- Arepas!
     By A3CORM17LRIRWA on 2007-10-20
Ok, I vacationed in Venezuela years ago, and had these wonderful corn cake sandwichy things. Arepas. NEVER had them again until I moved to my current home, and my neighbor happens to be from Venezuela!!! She made these for me!!! She also told me about this arepa maker, which I ended up purchasing! I LOVE THIS THING!! Makes perfect arepas without frying.
- GOOD TO MAKE PANCAKES , ISN'T GOOD TO MAKE AREPAS!!
     By A24GS2VCZVN2B9 on 2007-03-13
I don't have bought this machine but...IN SOUTH AMERIC AONLY COLOMBIA AND VENEZUELA MAKES AREPAS no other country in south america or central America. I'm from Colombia I know how to make arepas and the best way is using the hands to get the round shape and size that you prefer and charcoal grill.
other review mentioned "ONE TRICK"...you can open the AREPAS and scoop inside and fill them with anything that you can image! this type the Arepa isn't trick is called AREPA OR CHARAPAS CON TODO AND ARE BIG (AREPA WITH EVERYTHING) in Colombia & Venezuela and inside of this menu of AREPAS WITH EVERYTHING you can find: with cheese, cheese and bacon, chiken, meat and others.
Save your money, buy real corn and use grinder and make using your hands Arepas and put on the charcoal grill.

- good product
     By A37UX9WI498TOQ on 2007-09-09
I am new to making arepas but this machine makes it easy. I don't care for the recipe that comes with the maker so find one that is a little more fluffy with more flavors. Otherwise the maker is great and it arrived promptly.

- Nice shape and convenient
     By A3FED8SW03A5XF on 2007-10-23
I bought this cute machine for it will make 6 perfect cute round shapes I want. I use it for all kinds of pastes- wafer, muffin, pancake and Asian style pastry, sweet or salt. My boy likes them. You don't have to keep a eye on it, the ding-sound would remind you. The clearing part is super easy--just uses warm water and washing cloth. Super time-saving.
- Love it!! I bought another a week later for my mother in law.
     By A2ZCCCX2U40PVE on 2008-05-21
Very well made and easy to clean. So much nicer than the traditional 4 at-a-time arepa maker.
- Arepamaker - Dorayaki maker
     By A24MW8XSUWKYUT on 2007-06-08
I use this to make Dorayaki (Japanese pancake filled with sweet red beans) It works pretty good but you have to be fast because the bottom cooks quickly so I just close the lid for a few minutes then flip the cakes & cook with the lid open to even the sides up.
