This is the best system By A1FM6V742VDLXR on 2005-02-27
We are very happy with the citronella bark collars. We have three dogs, all are terriers and they can get into a bark-fest. These collars have worked wonders, and are truly humane-- they work without pain. I wouldn't use one of the shock collars. They are not "humane"- they shock and they hurt! If you don't believe me, put it on your own neck and give it a try. I have seen dogs with burns on their necks from those. (As an aside, yes, I tried this citronella collar too. I let it spray me full in the face. Not pleasant, but not painful.) If you love your dog, try this method. BTW, don't buy the expensive replacement batteries here. They are a standard size and can be obtained at any Walgreens, Target, etc for around $3.
Dog smells like Citronella... By A1NO7B638Y7NYK on 2005-03-11
Unfortunately, the collar didn't do anything for our dog. I've tried the collar multiple times (went thru the refill can already), but she is very happy to just be barking away. The only effects I can figure out in our case is that we are out $80, and the dog smells like Citronella.
On the positive side, the device has been pretty durable and sits on the dog well. Citronella just didn't work for us.
very effective, but might not work for very challenging dogs By A1YY5WRMU9TK03 on 2005-06-28
This collar worked great for my smart and trainable long-haired German Shepherd -- effectively re-trained her barking behavior, and we quickly got to the point where she didn't need it any more. I also loaned it to a friend with a very spirited Golden Retriever, and it has worked well for their dog, although she continues to need to wear it most of the time even after a year. My mother tried it with her keeshonds, who are the most stubborn dogs I've ever met, and it really didn't work with them, even when she made adjustments for their thick fur. Of course, those dogs are pretty behaviorally challenging, and a strong shock-collar has only been moderately effective for them. So ... for a spirited but reasonably compliant dog, it has seemed to work well, but for more stubborn dogs, the barking challenge may go on and on.
Didn't work for my Weim By A31WX020K6Q4C4 on 2006-01-03
This may be a great product for some, but it didn't work for us. I put the collar on my barks-a-lot 1 year old puppy and within minutes he barked -- the collar prayed the citronella and the dog was confused, he barked at the mist and collar went off again. This continued, followed by much coughing and gagging. At the time, I was dealing with HORRIBLE morning sickness coupled with allergies and found that after the citronella was sprayed all over the house, I was running for the bathroom getting sick from the smell. Later that afternoon, I went to pet my puppy as he was being a good boy. I scratched the side of his neck under his ear (favorite spot) and thought it should be far enough away from the sensors but that still triggered the collar again and I got sprayed in the face. After that I spent the rest of the day sick in bed :( Love that morning sickness! Later in the evening, the puppy got down on his favorite rug, rolled around and the collar went off, he got up and shook after a nap flopping his hears and the collar went off. After that, the puppy scratched his ear with his hind foot and the collar went off again. That night... mommy took his collar off -- forever. The puppy was happy and mommy felt better :)
Food for thought. Our dog trainer was very concerned that we had chosen a "bark collar." She says it's better to just have a remote operated training collar that you control. You want your dog to give at least one warning bark in case there is something wrong (intruder/danger). After all there is a reason dogs bark, to communicate. With a remote operated collar, you can control the EXCESSIVE barking. I'm buying one of those remote shock collars now. Tried one on myself, not much more than a static shock you get from your clothes in the winter.
It's a miracle!!! By AU4E1NPKJK0YM on 2005-10-13
I've had my dog for almost 3 years now and I will admit he's not very social, especially to other dogs. I would always dread taking him for walks because he would just make SUCH a ruckus. He would back and scream bloody murder if even the dog was on the other side of the street. Well imagine this 6 o'clock in the morning when the whole neighborhood is asleep. I'm sure you could imagine the embarrasement. Well I got this collar last week and I swear it's been a miracle. I'm kicking myself in the a## for not buying this collar earlier.
The first time he barked, he was startled out of his mind. The second time, same reaction. The third time, he just barked once, then kept quiet once the spray went off. Now he doesn't even bark. You could tell he wants to, but just knows the consequences. Words can't explain how thrilled I am to have purchased this collar. Now I'm saving up to purchase the one with the remote. That way I can use it when I get home and he's screaching, waking up the neighborhood, and announcing my arrival.
One thing to keep in mind is that this collar does not work for high pitched screaching like my dog does when I get home. Hence the reason for buying the one with the remote. Oh, and for those wondering if it will work on your small dogs, it will. My dog is a chihuahua/pomeranian mix.
- Excellent results with a dachshund

My doxie is a major league, Hank Aaron barker. This product is 100% effective for him. He is a little shy (although stubborn sometimes), which might make a difference. He weighs 19 lbs. I really am not sure I could bear to shock him, as I am a bit tender-hearted towards him, but I probably would if that was what it took to stop heavy barking.
There are a lot of nice extras about using this collar.
-- It doesn't seem to cause him any pain, it just startles him.
-- He seems to be comfortable with it, as large as it is (we keep it loose), and can run, jump, and sleep with it on.
-- It allows him to bark at a very subdued volume, which I think is nice. It's a pleasant deep soft sound, not at all bothersome, and it lets him satisfy his bark urge to a degree. It also lets him communicate when he needs something.
-- If he does bark, it keeps the mosquitoes away!!
-- The spray does not smell bad at all -- it's almost pleasant
-- It WORKS (for my doxie); after two or three single barks, he stopped completely.
-- Strangely, he doesn't seem to object when I put it on him. He really lets you know if he doesn't like something, and he doesn't mind wearing this collar hardly at all.
Here are the bad things:
-- If you leave it turned on, the battery will run out.
-- The collar itself is quite hard to size for a smaller dog; I had to use scissors and Scotch tape, which does not hold up well.
-- It IS quite large on a small dog.
We had him wear it for three weeks. Now, we just put it on him for a booster course if he barks twice in one day.
You have to remember to turn it off when you take it off, and turn it on when you put it on your dog. This becomes automatic quickly. The citronella lasts a long time; at least, it lasts a long time if it works. Some dogs apparently are not impressed by the spray and bark the reservoir empty.
There is a problem with recommending this collar, because it may or may not work for your dog. It is either the greatest thing since cut bread, or a total waste of money.
My personal experience has been great with this product. It stopped a major behavioral problem immediately, without any pain inflicted on our dog. It's a bit expensive for a product that may not work at all in an individual case. The upside though is a big one, it is a FABULOUS product if your dog responds to it.
- We love it!!!! Our beagle doesn't....
     By A13EFX6XXSNB57 on 2004-11-04
Being that my wife and I have tried all of the tricks and training techniques to keep our little beagle from barking so much. We had almost given up. While online one day I thought I would see if there were any products that were a safe and humane way to train your dog. After a couple of hours of searching, I found a couple of different collars, one being a shock collars which I was completely opposed to and the citronella collar. I was a little skeptical at first, but after some research and reading a couple of independent studies I found this collar was more effective than the other collars. So I bought it. After a short two day wait, I received it in the mail. I put it on our dog and after two sprays of citronella he understood that barking is what set it off. Since then it has been peace and quiet. I still put the collar on him, but I haven't had to turn it on it quite some time.
- reasonable alternative to electronic collars
     By ANFHJ1JN88Z5O on 2005-12-03
I bought this collar because behavioral training was not working as well as I would have liked with my very vocal dog (a rescue that was formerly an outside-only dog)and I didn't want to resort to an electronic collar to train her. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the citronella collar did indeed work well at reducing the incidence of barking. My "chatty" girl caught on after getting sprayed only a few times, although she sometimes will still bark very quietly (below the trigger threshold) when she's really motivated (this is called getting collar smart). It's not a 100% cure and isn't supposed to be, but it definitely made a difference within a very short period of time. If you use this collar and have more than one dog in close quarters, be aware that another dog's bark can trigger the collar to spray, resulting in a false correction for the wearer.
I've had this collar for more than three months now and have yet to go through the original container of citronella, another indicator of how quickly it worked. My only complaint is that the collar did not come with the 6 volt battery that was advertised as part of the package. The end of the adjustable collar was also a challenge to thread through the piece that holds it in place, but it gets there with a bit of work and a whole lot of patience.
Overall I would say this is a very good training aid. It's considerably less expensive than a good quality electronic collar and completely humane. If you also like the lemony-fresh scent of citronella, this is the way to go.
- Priceless - A Must Have!
     By A3UI8K4EBMHOA2 on 2004-12-20
We live in an apartment complex that is old and has thin walls. Our dog barked for about 2 hours every morning (the rest of the day he was fine) and our neighbors were seriously losing their patience with our attempts to resolve the problem.
We tried ignoring him for 30 minutes prior to leaving and 10 min after coming back home; we tried treat-dispensing toys; we tried to desensitize him by doing short leaves (with gradual lengthening of absent time). Nothing worked.
Our management was pretty cool about it because they knew we were trying to solve the problem, but after 10 days, I knew our days were numbered. Either we would have to move (we have 6 months left on our lease) or give away our dog.
I had never heard of this type of collar before. A woman in our complex mentioned it in passing and I was so desperate, I immediately started doing some research and decided to give it try since it seemed to be our last hope.
It worked the first time our dog barked and activated the spray. He stopped barking immediately. We've only tried the collar now for 3 days and so far, our manager says no one is complaining and they themselves haven't heard a peep (they could hear him barking before).
This collar saved us alot of grief! I don't know how it will work with dogs with severe barking problems, but our's was a manageable problem and it worked immediately without any negative side effects.
If you have a problem barker, I strongly recommend trying this collar before resorting to electric shock collars or worse, de-barking.
- Works well, but batteries don't last long
     By A1WKESWZPGI505 on 2005-06-21
We have an invisible fence, so we didn't want to use an electric collar as it might confuse our dog. This works well when the batteries are new, but we have to replace the batteries no less often than every 2 weeks (even if he hasn't been barking much). They aren't the easiest batteries to find either - Target seems to have the best deal - you have to get them in the photo dept. If the batteries lasted I would give it 5 stars.
- Worked Perfect!

Well here's the story of two occasional barkers and one terribly nasty neighbor.
About my dogs:
Ginger: Jack Russel/ Beagle mix, 30lbs, 3 years old, short hair, spayed, female.
Guppy: Sheltie/ Beagle mix, 28lbs, apox 6 years old, med-long hair, spayed, female.
Both are crate trained, however they are not generally crated on a regular basis and never more than 6-8 hours. They have never barked while crated. In fact the only time they do bark is at the rabbits in my yard, or when the doorbell rings, or maybe once when they need to be let outside. I am currently unemployed so my dogs have been able to play out in the yard since the spring. They have had more than adequate attention, exercise, and walks as a good chunk of my day is spent playing with them, or working in the yard supervising them. We even have central air, when they are alone even in summer, they are always comfortable. They have kongs and other toys to keep them busy. They travel with us on family vacations and they participate in camping, hiking, etc. They're alone about 50% of the time. We do not spend so much time with them that it would seem abnormal to them to be alone. Generally speaking they are very well behaved, well socialized, healthy, and well taken care of dogs. Previous to our townhouse, we lived in an apartment complex and received no barking complaints what so ever.
About my Housing:
I have lived in my townhouse for over three years, and got along with the neighbors just fine. Then one day our one neighbor started complaining about dog poop. Our yards are fenced off, so I have my own yard. I pick up poop twice a week, and none really gets near the fence. No one, including my landlord, understood the sudden BS from that neighbor. There wasn't much poop to speak of, and my yard is my yard. Period. And so, I suppose, the feud began.
About the Barking:
After the feud started, and in three years, we got two complaints about barking: One was when our beagle/jack russel mix was just adopted, and the other was a year and a half later when the neighbor called the police. The first time ~I~ was actually barking and making a racket while teaching my dog the "Speak" command. If you can teach them to speak, you can tell them not to speak. The other involved a police officer standing in my front bushes shinning a flashlight into my window. The first time was a human making noise, the second...well if someone shines a light into my house, while climbing in my landscaping....at night....it's my dogs JOB to bark. As far as I am concerned: Case Dismissed. No other complaints were ever made by any neighbor. So on a whim we decided to video tape our dogs and take a 15-20 minute walk. They howled. They howled non-stop. We were pretty surprised because we can't imagine any behavior this bad, since the feud started, and ~not~ having been cited by the police or evicted in three years. So it must be fairly new. The video tape also revealed my neighbor pounding on the wall and yelling non-stop. It's not clear if the wall pounding or the barking started first...but it was clear my neighbor had successfully reinforced my dogs barking behavior. Surprisingly both dogs howled, and one has a history of abuse prior to her adoption, and hardly makes noise of any kind, let alone howl. So this was a problem. A big problem. As they did not bark when we were home, and how could I control or punish this behavior if I was not home? That night the police showed up right after we made our video. They said if we actually got caught, we would have been fined. My neighbor has a long history of harassment, and even if my dogs were tempted to bark by my neighbor, I knew it wouldn't be good for my lease if I actually got cited. Although two complaints in three years seemed really minor. So if they barked this much on a regular basis I would have expected more than two complaints and I did not.
The Solution:
I am vehemently against electric shock collars and de-barking surgery, and consider them to be ~~exceptionally~~ cruel. (Electric shock collars are even illegal in some countries for this reason.) So those were not options for me. I would move first. After a long night on the internet I decided to try the citronella collar. Independent studies have shown they are much more effective than shock collars for barious reasons, and many many reviews here at Amazon and pet supply websites were positive. So we gave it a try.
You can not put the collar on the dog and have a quick fix! As with anything concerning dogs, you have to be there to further the training. If you want a quick fix...this is not necessarily it. It takes several days to work. Although....as far as barking goes......that is pretty quick. We decided to use it on Ginger, as Guppy seemed to howl with her but only after she started. Ginger is also the most persistent barker, while Guppy gives an occasional warning low bark at the doorbell etc. The manual states that you should be there to supervise the dog in the beginning. This is important because the collar holds about 25 barks/sprays. If your dog was persistent enough, and smart enough, they will quickly learn that after barking for 5 minutes, they are now scott free to bark all they want. I think if you reach this point, the collar no longer has any meaning and you can forget about it working if they learn to out smart it. So if you're going to spend the $100.....make sure you have a weekend to put into the training.
Also it is crucial that you adjust the collar so that it has just the right amount of space between the dogs throat and the spay-box. Too much space and the collar will go off at random noises, too tight and it might not go off at all. The manual suggest that gravity keeps the box at the dogs throat, so if they scratch and it gets kicked to the back of their neck, it should gently fall back to place at their neck when they sit up. That's been the best rule of thumb for me. It is not supposed to pick up the barking at the mouth, it is supposed to pick up the vocal cords at the throat.
Also it should be noted that this is not intended to control whimpering or crying. This is to control the full blown bark. Living in an apt attached to another apt all I really needed to do was to control full blown barking. They will learn quickly that they can fly under the radar with a whimper. I don't' particularly care about that myself. Dogs bark. You wouldn't want to spend the whole day totally silent, and neither do they.
I only use this collar about 20 hours a week. It should NEVER be used 24/7. In fact once it is used properly for a few weeks, you should not need it at all. The key to this collar is that it disrupts barking consistently. It does not necessarily punish the barking. The spray is fast, slightly loud, and lemony fresh. So they feel it, hear it, and smell it. It is designed to take away attention from what makes them bark. They even sell non-scented spray for anyone who finds the odor offensive. I hardly smell it at all myself, and it isn't sticky.
Personally I still felt bad in using it. My dogs did not understand where the spray was coming from, and they will run from it at the beginning. They don't run from the collar, but they do know now what it does. And they will not bark when it's on.
Actually Ginger does not have to wear it anymore at all. We got a new neighbor whose dog barks NON STOP. And Ginger would bark right back at her nonstop. We tried for days to socialize the dogs so they could be outside at the same time. Guppy would give up after a few minutes, but Ginger and the neighbors dogs would bark at one another until hey were raw. After we used the citronella collar, and Ginger learned barking was unacceptable, she didn't bark under most circumstances. The neighbors dog still barks non stop at her but she just stares or whimpers. We had 5 baby bunnies the in the backyard, and she did not bark. We visit a friends farm occasionally where Ginger's run into turkeys, cows, goats, and cats....things she generally only sees once a year or so. So she has been exposed to a number of things which would make her bark, and a few new things since. There has been very very little or no barking since the collar and without her having to wear it.
We've videotaped the dogs at home about 10-12 times now with FANTASTIC results while no one was home, and as I mentioned before she's been taken to a few get togethers at farms and places she's never been, with people she's never met, and there was no barking with or with out the collar.
In fact today Guppy cornered a rabbit just out of her reach, and she barked at it nonstop. I went out and put the collar on her, thought I thought her hair might be a little too long for it, and it worked great. After 3 sprays you could tell she wanted to bark very badly, but she did not.
A Few Tips:
* You really have to start out using it in a situation you know your dog will bark. Especially with occasional barkers. For me I got my other neighbor to bring out her dog. This gave me a chance for my dog to try to bark quite a few times under my supervision with out letting the spray running out and reassuring her she was a good dog. You should do this for a few days to make sure they don't outsmart it. It took me about 2 days with a fair amount of want-to-bark situations to make sure Ginger was properly trained.
* The battery is very odd, but you can find it at photo depts. in Target or Wal-Mart rather than paying the obscene prices at pet stores.
* Once your dog learns what the collar does and the barking is under control, I use it switched off a good part of the time. Maybe every other time I use it I turn it on. This way you don't run down the batteries, but the dogs get pretty consistent feedback. Other people have even bought one collar, trained a number of dogs, then made "Dummy" collars with fake boxes on them that don' spray. Hopefully you will not need the collar after you train, but if you do there are a number of cost effective ways to use it.
*If you must buy the collar in store....bargain with a manager about the price. They normally run $20-30 more expensive in store, and are almost ALWAYS on sale online. Petsmart will honor their own web prices. PetCo only seemed to honor Petsmarts prices, but not the web prices. So find out when they are on sale, or buy them online. Usually they come with free shipping.
* I'm told you can rent them in some states from vets and kennels. Call around. On the off chance it won't work for you, you won't have dropped the $90-100 on the collar. Or check eBay for a cheap one.
*Because they are about $100 I find pet stores don't move them in and out of stock very much. For this reason you may find you bought one that DOES NOT come with an on/off switch. It is an older model...and it is not worth $100. This model runs down the battery significantly. You will not be happy with this model. Return it.
So.....that's the story. I'm sure everyone's situation and dog is different. The collar worked WONDERS for me, and I recommend it to anyone with a barking problem. Most of the negative reviews I've read on Amazon, sorry to say, showed a lot of human error. Really if you follow the manual, and put the time in to train your dog, it works just like it says it does. I haven't had any clogging or operational problems what so ever.
EDIT: It is now November 20th....the dogs are not barking (even when the neighbor ponds on the wall when we're gone hoping to get them to bark). We have not had to buy any batteries or citronella. 7 months and it still works like a dream.
- depends on your dog
     By A37MGH86Q0JWS3 on 2005-09-03
while this may be a great product for some dogs, if your dog is like mine they are not bothered enough by the spray and just continue barking until the spray runs out (it doesn't take long to get past 25 barks) this just teaches them that if they bark enough the annoying spray will go away. I would suggest borrowing one from a friend before investing the $70 yourself. Also, if your dog has long hair you will need to shave their neck to get it work properly.
- Expensive--but it works
     By AK5VLR43G97DL on 2005-03-15
We have a pomeranian and needed her to stop barking as we live in an apartment complex. We spent $100 on the initial collar. At first, it worked really well. She knew that if she barked she would get sprayed. But ... after a while it stopped working so effectively. It now only goes off about 1/4 barks. We have had to replace the battery many times as it apparently wears out quickly even if you are not using it and the citronella cans aren't cheap either. Also, our dog figured out that if she barks enough, the collar will empty and stop doing it because the citronella collar doesn't hold that much. Over all, if you have the money and REALLY need your dog to stop barking it works. But for us, it's really just too expensive (to purchase and maintain).
- May work for you, may not.

We have a one year old border collie/blue heeler mix dog that we had just picked up from the animal shelter a few weeks before. The problem we quickly discovered is that the dog barks. She barks at the neighbor dogs across the fence, she barks at squirrels, birds, everything. Before we got the dog we had turned our neighbors into animal control for the fact that their dogs barked all night. Now I had a dog with the same problem.
I looked around the web for a solution and came across the Premier Gentle Spray Anti-Bark Dog Collar. Most of the reviews were absolutely glowing, so I placed an order and waited for it to arrive. When it did I quickly read the directions, filled the reservoir, put in the battery and put it on the dog.
We put the dog in the back yard (where she lives) and waited.
No barking!!!
Occasionally I would hear a little bit of a bark and then it would stop. I assumed that she had forgotten about the collar and had barked, gotten sprayed, and quit. I was happy to say the least. No longer did I have to put up with her barking, or interrupting dinner to run outside and scold her (in January no less). When she came inside for the evening I would take the collar off and refill it. When she went out the next morning, the collar was back on. This went on for a few bark free days.
Then one day I forgot to refill the collar and she barked it empty. Now we were back to barking. Bark Bark Bark Bark Bark.
That's where we are now. I used up the one can of spray and haven't bought any more because I'm not sure if it is worth it. The directions say that you should use this as a training tool and not as a no-bark babysitter. They recommend that you reward the dog when it doesn't bark and basically set up a positive/negative reinforcement using treats and attention for the positive and the spray as the negative. They also tell you not to have the dog wear the collar all of the time.
First off, I work all day. I bought this to stop the dog from barking both when I'm away and when I'm home. I can't reward her for not barking when I'm not home. Second, the dog lives outside. That's when she barks, not in the house. If the dog is not to wear the collar all the time, then what good is it?
For the record, the collar worked well. It sprayed when it was suppose to. It didn't break, and it did cut down on the dogs barking until I forgot to refill the canister and the dog barked it empty. I think this would be an excellent product for someone with an inside dog that barks and who is home to positively reinforce the dog when it doesn't bark.
If your dog lives outside and you aren't home all the time, either stock up on the refill canisters and hope your dog stops barking before you run out, or buy a different product.
I gave this item three stars because the collar itself worked; it sprayed when the dog barked. I didn't give it more stars because it didn't totally stop the dog from barking. I didn't give it less than three stars because it was my fault and not the fault of the product that I forgot to refill the collar and the dog barked it empty. I would like to have had a bigger reservoir for the spray so that it didn't have to be refilled as often. I would also have liked to have have a second canister of spray included with the collar. The PetSmart location near me has the refills for $16. I think that is a lot of money for a little can of spray. If you do decide to buy this product I would strongly recommend that you buy one of the sets that comes with a second canister of spray, or that you buy a second canister when you place your order. Also be prepared to spend the time with the dog to stop the barking, and don't just use the spray to shut the dog up.
- Doesn't work on all dogs.

I have used this collar on all 5 of my Aussie/Border Collie cross dogs since about August or September and I have used about 1 and 1/2 cans (total)of the spray and have not had to replace any batteries yet. However, they only wear them about 20-25 hrs a week. This collar has worked well for me. All of the dogs are different and one of them is a little more willing to bark occasionally and get sprayed. My sister, however has 9 month old puppie of the same breed cross and the spray had no affect on her at all. She just kept on barking like nothing happened. What I did before I purchased the collars was to rent one from a local kennel and training center to see if it would work on my dogs before I spent the money on them and I really didn't want to put shock collars on them. So any one considering this product I would recommend renting or borrowing one first to make sure it is compatable with your dog before you spend the money.
- Hooray!

Even in the first day, my dog was barking less. We're now on the third day and she rarely barks as long as the collar is on. When the collar is off, she barks but far less than she used to.
The citronella smell fades quickly (under a minute). The only problem I have with the collar is that it'll spray if one of my other dogs barks too close to her. Regardless, I would recommend it highly.
- Buyer Beware

Having read the other reviews of this product on this site, I decided to go ahead and give these collars a shot despite some of the problems other reviewers had encountered. I ordered three of these products from this site, and when they arrived, not a single one of them worked - at all. They were completely useless and despite trying everything other reviewers and the manufacturer suggested, these products are completely useless. Although I have contacted the manufacturer of this product about the defects, I would still like the buyer to be aware that if purchasing this product from this website, that if the product does not work, it can not be returned for a refund or even exchanged. - The Bark Beneath My Snout!
     By A9Y5S2BKV7SYV on 2007-01-29
This is such an excellent product, that it makes me think of the movie "Beaches," and how sad and beautiful that motion picture really is. Which further inspired me to compose the following jingle for this truly superior collar:
Ohhhh, oh, oh, oh, ohhh.
It must have been warm there in the backyard,
to always have sunlight on your face.
I was content to let you bark, that's your way.
You always walked a step behind.
So I was the one with all the pockets,
while you were the one with all the treats.
A beautiful mutt without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.
Did you ever know that you're too loud, dog?
and I no longer want to hear you holler?
I can spray you right in the face, dog,
for you have the Premier Gentle Spray Anti-Bark Dog Collar.
It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
the present you left me upon the bed.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
And my silence is messing with your head.
Did you ever know that you're too loud, dog?
and I no longer want to hear you holler?
I can spray you right in the face, dog,
for you have the Premier Gentle Spray Anti-Bark Dog Collar.
Oh, the Premier Gentle Spray Anti-Bark Dog Collar!
You, you, you, you have the Premier Gentle Spray Anti-Bark Dog Collar.
Whine, whine, whine high again,
so high you can almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you,
thank God for you, the dog who I will someday name and potentially consider part of our (extended) family.
- Mostly thumbs up for spray collar.

This collar worked miracles for the first 3-4 weeks. My wheaten terrier stopped barking at folks who walked by our house when we was inside. When he was in the yard he also stopped barking at people as long as he had the collar on. Initially he was depressed for the first few days because it was a big change from his perceived role of protecting the house (this is a self chosen assignment, not anything that I ever requested). Over time though, the effectiveness of the spray collar has worn off. He still barks less when he is outside but does not seem to mind being sprayed. I will say that the battery wares out rather quickly, so order extra batteries to have on hand.
- Didn't work on my small dog....
     By A1167O5UO436BD on 2006-04-05
I have a miniature dachshund who is a chronic barker. Having tried the shock-style collar, and finding them too intense, I hoped this would be a better alternative. For my very small dog (9 pounds), I could not get the collar to adjust to the correct position for the microphone to pick up her (very loud) barks. Also, as noted by other consumers, the battery runs out very quickly.
- Works best for large dogs - Call Premier for a small dog version
     By A2K1VNQLSQQO9P on 2007-03-23
The standard collar does not work well for small dogs with high pitched barks. I called Premier and spoke to them about my problem. (Their customer service is EXCELLENT) They exchanged the collar for a 'French' collar which is slightly different. It works very good and discourages our dog from barking.
- happy ending

If it doesn't work for you, this review may help.
well, first, wow did i ever get ripped off, i needed one in a hurry right before the 4th of July because i noticed my dog barked at fireworks. I live in an apartment with a no pets clause, where i lay low with the dog, so i went and got one of these at the local pet store, Centinela Fed and Pet Supply. It was $109!!!!! but if it worked.... They even allowed me to rent it, i forget how much per day, so that i could make sure it worked before paying the whole price because unlike most things in their store, there was a no return policy on that item. They usually will take anything back, with a friendly smile, so they told me upfront they don't take these things back so i should make sure it works before buying it. I was very excited because it worked right away, my cavalier king charles spaniel got sprayed right in the chin and it totally got his mind off whatever he was barking at. But then i found that sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't, i tried a new battery and many refills but couldn't get it to work consistently, which made it not effective for training. I did pay for it in full because in the first week, i thought i could get it to work by getting more pointers from Premier over the phone (they were not available over the 4th of July holiday) and by getting my dog a haircut. With time, the thing worked less and less, very disapppointing. I thought it was defective and took it back to the store, but for them it worked. :-(
Finally i talked to Premier on the phone and they told me that sometimes this model i got doesn't work if the dog has a higher pitched bark, and they have ANOTHER MODEL which is no longer on the market, why i don't know, which they call "the French model," which does work better for dogs with higher pitched barks. It's all black unlike the one i got which has black and silver on it, they said. They said they would send me one and i could try it and if it worked, i could sent my other one to them and it would be an even trade. They took a credit card number but they never charged it.
I got the French model and right out of the box, it worked great, it sprays every time, and i have nicely quiet dog now. This breed is not known for being extremely trainable, and he does seem to forget sometimes, but it's been a couple of weeks, and there is a big difference, he is a quiet dog now. I have squirrels and things in the backyard which he previously barked his head off at while chasing them. now, he may or may not chase them but does not bark. It seems to get more and more solid with time. I have left it on him a lot after i found that when i took it off, he returned to his old ways, but now, it seems he doesn't bark when it's off either.
I'm very pleased with the Gentle Spray FRENCH model all black. It works just the way it's supposed to, consistently and effectively. I'm sorry that i paid $108 when i could've gotten it on Amazon for $40. If i remember right, the Premier company would've sold me one of these directly for $75. I did have to pay to ship the one that didn't work back to them, they sent me a UPS envelope and i had to pay like $5 or less, so my total was about $115, which i regret, but it totally works.
I didn't know whether my dog has a high pitched bark or not. I don't think of it has very high pitched. But he is a small dog, about 20 pounds, so i guess his bark could be considered high pitched.
Premier had good customer service, very friendly and oriented toward problem solving, i felt my happiness and the reputation of their product mattered to them. I also use a Premier gentle leader harness which cured my dog of pulling hard on the leash so i have a good impression of that company.
- this works for humans but not dogs

I have tried this product and am now trying to figure out how to return it. I know it's in working order because when I blow or bark into the microphone it sprays back at me. The only problem is I have a big standard poodle and when SHE barks it does nothing. Maybe it would work on a dogs who's mouth is closer to it's body?
- Not working for my Westie
     By A1P1FDP753XYL1 on 2006-05-10
I had high hopes for this collar, but after a few days of use, my Westie quickly learned that he could "out-bark" the resevoir of Citronella spray (it only lasts for about 25 sprays). This purchase was a total loss for my dog.
Oh, well, I guess I'm back to the static shock correction.
- Wow - this product is fantastic!

I thought I'd give this a try for my yappy chihuahua mix. I did not want to try a shock collar, but I was concerned that this collar would be too large for her (she's only 8 lbs). Although it looks a little large, she doesn't appear uncomfortable at all. And WOW did this work! The spray stopped each barking episode on the first bark - immediately. After the first 2-3 days, she is barking less in general and doesn't have to wear the collar all that often. It's been 5 days, and I don't think she will need to wear it forever. This product has been a total lifesaver, and my dog is happy too.
- Works well to reduce barking when on leash.
     By A3JQF17N7TALUF on 2007-02-12
The barking problem I had with my dog is he goes nuts when taking him on a walk and we pass near another dog. It's not that he is aggressive. He just wants to check out the other dog and barks and lunges when he can't. With this collar he gets a puff of citronella spray near his face with each bark. It's not too intense for him, but seems to be annoying enough to do the trick. He quickly made the connection between the bark and the spray. It also does not leave a lingering odor. He now behaves much better. When we pass another dog he starts acting like he wants to bark, but something in that fur brain of his kicks in and says "oh yea, I'll get sprayed, not worth it."
- Works great!
     By AY26QZCYDIZPF on 2007-03-09
I have 3 dogs and when one barks, the others follow. I've tried the shock collar on one of my dogs and he would stay under my bed all day long, so I got rid of that. Then I tried the high pitch bark collar - it worked ok, but when my kids would play near the dogs, sometimes the collars would go off and it really didn't seem do the job. This collar works great - when I get home from work, the 3 of them are usually barking and won't stop, with this collar, they just look at me and waggle - it doesn't scare my older dog either (the one that hid under the bed). I would highly recommend it!
- Expensive and useless.
     By A2HW8AX7CL69GK on 2005-04-22
The first day I got the collar I thought it was great. My dog stopped barking when the collar sprayed her. After a day or two, she was no longer affected by it. She almost seemed to bark more. I will be returning this product and hope to find a better way to reduce her barking. This was a big waste of money.
- Did not work at all on my Shephard Mix
     By A1DYT1W6M4CZ5J on 2005-05-05
For the first day, my dog was startled by the spray, but on the second day, when he realized it would not hurt him, he just barked right through the spray. I would not invest the money in this collar, the only thing you will get is a house that smells like citronella!
- Anxiety Dog Became More Secure
     By AMGLW19LZ4EPZ on 2007-02-27
I bought this collar 3 years ago when I first got my dog at 7 months. She was an abused cocker spaniel left in a pit bull ring as a bait dog. When she was rescued and given to me she had so many emotional issues (separation anxiety). When I left for work in the mornings, she would bark and cry ALL DAY LONG until exactly 1 hour before I came home (My neighbor complained, he worked nights). This was my last resort as nothing else worked. When it first squirted at her first bark, she was so cute, she ran around the room looking for the scent. By the second bark she figured it out. They say that this is not good for severe anxiety dogs, but it worked wonders. My neighbor ran into me at the end of the first week and thought I had given my dog away. I did let her run around without it when I got home. Now its been 3 years since and she is a well adjusted dog, no collar needed after 4 months. Premier is the best! Remember: 1) remove the battery or turn off if not using (saves the battery). 2) The collar usually lasts about a year. My little pup learned how to check the battery by giving a low test bark every time I put it on her.
