  • They Break

    By A2L7WYA5OENV03 on 2005-02-25
The sound, fit, and function is perfect for DJing. Exceptionally tight bass that poo poos all over anything by Sony (700, V6/7506, 7509), Korg, or Ixos, and the mids and highs are nicely balanced. There's a slight (and I do mean slight) excess of bass, but it's in a way that lends itself to mixing and is never muddy and muffled. Etymotic's high end in-ear stuff obviously does better on the bass (as well as everywhere else) but that's a different beast. Unfortunately, the 1000's break. First thing to go is usually the slide joint. You'll notice they keep slipping on one side (left usually) and tightening the screw will eventually strip it. The solution is to superglue the sliders (open them up completely) then tape the outside with scotch tape, which is nearly invisible. A perfect solution, assuming you won't ever get to adjust the size again to anyone else's head. However, that's not the biggest problem. The plastic between the ball joint and the horseshoe shaped piece that contacts the driver housing will eventually crack and break completely. This usually occurs on the right side more, though by that time you'll see cracking on the left, too. It can happen out of nowhere one day and is catastrophic. For the price, this is totally unacceptable construction on Pioneer's part. They have been replacing them like gangbusters to people who have the problem, but you pay the shipping cost and there's no end to the number of headphones you'll go through. As far as I know, they haven't fixed it. Mine just went after only about 6 months. There are people on the Pioneer forum on their 5th one. They sound that good and work that well for DJing, but at this point I'm about ready to try the Senn 25. I've been to Numark hell and back about 11 times, and I don't want to start another cycle with a different product.

  • Yes - They Really Do Break

    By AZ0Q5KUSRQ06S on 2005-03-30
The reviewer before summed up these headphones and their shortcomings wonderfully so I simply want to add my voice to his comments. They DO BREAK; I guess I'm lucky in that mine lasted for just over a year. They sound FANTASTIC, the best I've used, but I've just written Pioneer to try and have them replaced. For $120 pair of phones I should be listening to these 10 years from now, not looking for gobs of tape and super glue just to listen to them only 1 year later. I havea feeling that if you reinforced that area with some tape they'd not break, or at least not for quite a while... kind of silly, but yeah, they sound GREAT.

  • Great headphones

    By A3F9710KIUVDGC on 2006-01-02
The Pros: Fantastic quality of sound. Very sturdy, reliable. Those who say they break easily, apparently have failed to understand how to and what for to use them. No, they are not you pillow. Not your seat cushion either. I've had them for about two years now and they look, feel and sound like new.
    Very nice looking headphones, too.
The Cons. Somewhat heavy, not very comfy (The Sennheiser HD555 are the most comfortable cans I've ever owned, but the Pioneers sound better). As it is common to all the closed type headphones, on rare occasions, when playing some abnormally low and powerful bass, the sound waves get trapped inside the cups and cause bad distortion. It happens very rarely, though. Overall excellent product.

  • Pioneer never disappoints!

    By A34K7GL3PX4YFT on 2004-12-06
I've had these pair of headphones for about a week now and I can't find anything wrong with them or to complain about. The bass, mids, and highs are all outstanding. I've tested this product with various styles of music just to hear the bass and treble levels, and I'm amazed at how clear the sound is even at the highest level of volume. As for noise cancelling it is perfect for filtering all outside distractions. Once these headphones are on, you're basically in you're own little world literally! I've been a Pioneer products customer for years, and their products have not dispoointed me yet. This just shows how much quality goes into a Pioneer product. Whether you're a Professional DJ or just an avid music listener these headphones they will not disappoint you!

  • Conterfeit!!!

    By A2UHF19Y1MEN3Q on 2008-08-08
Buyer beware. These were advertised at an "Open Box" for $59.00 and they ended up being fake. I had them authenticated or deemed conterfeit by Pioneer themselves. Eveidently, any HDJ1000 under $130 will likely be fake. I got taken since I thought it would be possible as an open box. Vendor no longer exsists, but I suspect they are still around Amazon under a different name selling them for $70.00. Look for smaller earcup, black hinges and a thinner headband than you see in the picture.

  • Head Phones
    By A2G330NCKSH9LM on 2007-08-31
I work as a part time DJ and find the phones great. Sound excellent and durable. Most others usually break from constantly taking them off and putting them on.

  • THEY BREAK!!
    By A2OFTACCAWCC6X on 2007-12-04
Great sound, great looking and comfortable.. but they will break. So intend to buy them once a year. Like the Sonys, the plastic piece that holds the earphone on to the headset is cheap and cracks, then eventually splits in two. It's the most strained part on the headphone because it is constantly being pressured by taking them on and off. If they just use a tougher material, like aluminum, titanium or something it would solve the problem and they would be useable for a long time. I think it's the manufacturer's way to consistently get DJs to buy them again and again. I have a broken pair in front of me and am about to do battle with Pioneer to get a replacement.

  • Excellent sound, mediocre construction
    By A188XF8FTAE4D8 on 2007-12-29
First off, I like these headphones enough to have had several pairs over the years despite their foibles. The main reason is the excellent sound. The highs are very clear but are never tinny, the low end is full and tight, never muddy, and mid range sounds including human voice and many instruments are well reproduced and have substantial body. The frequency response of these headphones is greater than that of many peoples hearing, so you can be sure the headphones will generate any sound you can pick up, that is they wont drop very hi or low frequency sounds. This frequency response coupled with a good efficiency (dB) makes for a superb listening experience; you'll be amazed at how much more of your music there is to hear. A handy small feature is that the cord is user replaceable, so no need to replace the headphones if the plug or cord is damaged.
On the downside, they are made out of rather cheap feeling plastic which seems apt to snap under tension, though the padding is comfortable, and the folding and swiveling earpieces make various listening styles easy including DJing which they are largely made for. Additionally, I have found that these are uncomfortable after an hour or two of use, because they seem to compress your ears/head, that the tension in the band piece going over your head is too stiff. The pads of the earpieces themselves are soft and accommodate most ears well though and are resistant to sweat and stain. These are slightly heavy but only due to the quality/heft of the drivers.
Overall, these are an excellent pair of headphones, and to me provide the highest quality of listening experience for my music, if not always the best comfort. I would recommend their purchase, and would suggest you buy an extended warranty through the vendor so you won't have to worry about the integrity of the plastic bits, as I had one pair brake after a couple years.

  • They're okay, but I've tested many and like the Sony MDR-V700DJ!!
    By AH91ZJ8W8NCLR on 2007-04-21
I particularly like the Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones. With the 50-mm drivers, they really are punchy and reveal every nuance in the music. With a frequency response of 5-30,000 Hz, they have to!

  • Great sound quality but shoddy construction
    By A3F31W5F50YSRR on 2008-03-28
Like other posters have said Great sound quality but poor construction and will fall apart after a year. I had mine for roughly a year and the part where the headphone connects to the headband broke the padding on the can s was also cracking. I however loved the sound quality and I am considering buying more just because of that if they fixed the issue of the breaking with better construction of metal or stronger plastic I would buy again.

  • dj headphones
    By A2UB4RUZXCNUSX on 2008-07-28
i have to say these are realy good headphones they sound good are powerfull look good and stick to your ears blocking all the noises around you!
i have them replaced now with sennheiser hd 25s wich probably are the best dj- studio headphones but for people who like better looking headphones id say go for the pioneer hdj1000!

  • Totally awesome!
    By A218E5KOXEAVNE on 2006-10-27
    First off, these things THUMP.
At 3w of output, I can jack these things into an AMP and they sound a damn sight better than any minispeakers I've ever heard... My *HEAD* will liquify before these things blow. Hooked to ye olde Creative Nomad Jukebox 3, these things are unlistenable at full volume for more than moments.
Hooked to an iPod nano, they don't quite reach the same volume, but I feel the audio fidelity is a touch richer on the lows...

Secondly, the quality is magic. You are THERE in live performances, electronica forces a phsyical response, you can hear the singers' breathing... These literally shake, the bass affects them so much.
The highs are crisp, and it covers all audio with ease. It took about a month of breaking them in to get it nice, and I've pushed 'em past that sweet spot, however they still DOMINATE on all of my friend's 'phones.

Comfort: Just fine. They overheat your dome after about an hour and a half of gaming/music/being plugged into a computer/mixer. On foot, bike, or board they just plain ROCK. Cinch 'em to your head and they dont' really move much at all! I would reccomend running your cords into an inside pocket tho - it's curlyness is prone to catching on bushes.

Finally, I've had these for over a year now, and I've broken them twice, and someone else has broken them once; Superglue: Back. In. Business!

I only gave these four stars because there is not an option for metal ones... I doubt I could superglue 'em, but I doubt I'd need to... I'd happily pay $50 more for them to have not broken once yet :D

    Enjoy the headphones!

  • Perfect for DJ
    By A204IBB6YPPJW3 on 2008-09-15
This are my favorite Headphones for DJ, I have numarks, technics, stanton, but this are the best....

the only problem is that you cant use it as a regular headphone for more than one hour, because your ear will be Red, and hurt... but thats because they have to be tie, to avoid the loud sound of the Dance club...
