Great addition to my Leatherman New Wave - useful and compact. By A213MNNCABU95F on 2006-03-07
I'm quite a fan of the modified Leatherman bits. They have come in handy more often than I thought they might. In fact, just the other day I found myself changing a taillight (in the freezing cold) on the truck with these.
The kit isn't cheap, but you are paying for the formfactor and convenience. There is another Wave add-on which allows you to use standard driver bits, but it's quite a bit larger than this system.
To start, they've shaved off about 2/5ths to 1/2 of the thickness of a standard bit. This allows them to configure a driver slot in with other tools without taking up the entire Multitool handle for a screwdriver. This kit comes with a nice nylon sheath, but I've found that to be a little too much for me personally. The configuration contains 2 hard plastic holsters for all of the bits. They even include a spare eyeglass driver.
I've changed up my every day carry to include the most commonly used bits on one of the two plastic "cards". I put this 1 card into the back pocket of my New Wave nylon sheath (I've heard of others doing this on their leather sheath, but I don't think there's enough room, personally.
So I don't really use the included sheath with both toolbit cards in it. I just move them around until I get the desired mix and carry one card with my Wave in one sheath. A very nice way to do it, and Leatherman obviously had this in mind when making the cards.
The only real detractor is that the sheath that comes with these isn't really fitted perfectly, but after some use, it probably would be better. I just didn't give it a chance.
The cost is a little high, but the steel is very high quality and I haven't noticed any stripping or spinning out yet. I wish it was cheaper, but this means I don't have to carry a large and heavy pack of bits and I'm willing to pay for that convenience.
great accessory By A24B42GHVNW3B4 on 2005-01-25
The first reviewers complaint is like saying cd's suck because you have a turntable! He can actually get an accessory to attach to his "old" Wave to use these bits.
This kit replaces the screwdriver style bit driver and hex insert set I used to carry in my kit. Knowing I got it all there is great. I only wish they would sell replacements piece by piece in case of loss or damage.
Does not fit the 'old' WAVE By ASH1OD9TSH95X on 2004-12-30
I was unimpressed with the two nylon carriers the bits sit in, and the bits themselves are kind of flattened
Leatherman introduced a new model of the Wave with a builtin tool adapter rather than giving a new tool a new name, with the result that I received this as a gift that I cannot use.
minuses for the bad product description, the cheapness of the carrier, and the terible amazon customer service over this.
Great Addition to the Leatherman Line By AME61YWL03XNQ on 2006-11-14
I am a paratrooper in the United States Army and I use a multi-tool every day. I have been issued tools from Leatherman, Gerber and SOG and all have their good points as well as bad.
The SOG rusted quite easily after being exposed to perspiration in Afghanistan. It was also not easy to expose the blades in the handle.
Gerbers worked well, but the screwdrivers were not beveled well. Also the bottle opener was so short that it was difficult to open a cold Sam Adams.
This assortment of bits works extremely well. I have never been a fan of leatherman multi-tools because of some poor design flaws in the early leatherman models. Specifically the original Leatherman tool was pretty hard on your hand when using the pliers. The "blades" were on the outside when the pliers were in the open position. If you ever had one, you know what I mean.
Leatherman corrected that with the Wave series by contouring the handles, but the bevel on the screwdriver (flat head) left much to be desired.
I used several Gerber models and was pretty satisfied with them (except for the LEDEND model.....no can opener) Gerbers also will pinch you if you are not careful when using the pliers.
The Victorinox Swisstool is built well, and with MINIMAL care will never rust. The blades are sharp and their placement is well thought out. It has rounded edges in all the right places and as such is comfortable in your hand. It will never pinch you when using the pliers.
I got a Leatherman XT-i as a gift and found it to be well made and comfortable to use. With the addition of this bit kit it should be even more functional. The bits seem to be well made and durable. I still find myself carrying my swisstool more often than the Leatherman, but that is out of 6 years of habit. I'm not ready to retire the Swisstool, but I will give the leatherman a chance.
I also put the bits I thought I would use the most on one card and carry that in the belt sheath that the XT-i came in. That seems to work well.
Product description is inaccurate By AMDQSLG1RDO7X on 2008-03-12
The product description says:
"What's in the box:
Leatherman bit kit with 21 double-sided bits, removable bit driver, nylon belt sheath."
but this product does not include the removable bit driver, so it is not compatible with leatherman tools such as Juice requiring the adapter (Leatherman Removable Bit Driver Kick Fuse Blast Vista Core Juice Knife. Since I didn't want to spend another $20. or buy a new Leatherman entirely, I ended up returning the product.
- Leatherman Strikes Again
     By A2A2TTYPEWPB8F on 2005-09-21
I have been using Leatherman tools for the last 6 or 7 years. I started with the original Multi-tool and it was OK, but it wasn't until I moved to the Wave that I was hooked. Now they release the "New Wave" with a built in bit adapter and all locking blades. These bits are indispensable. If you have one of the new Multi-tools your sheath is designed to hold the bit carrier as well as your tool. This is a well designed family of products and everyone should give it a look.
- Bit Kit
     By ADBG4W5YW32DP on 2006-03-14
This is a must for owners of the Surge, New Wave, and XTI leatherman multi tools. I currently am using the Surge every day at work. I'm a maintenance tech and with the bit kit it saves me from having to drag my tool bag (70 lbs) every where I go when responding to calls. Also saves time espically when using the allen bits and figuring out if it's metric or standard.
- Innovative addition to one of the greatest inventions in recent history!
     By A76QLS31AH7FB on 2006-08-23
I'm a long-time Leatherman fan. I began with the original, upgraded to the original Wave, then to the newest Wave! I'm a electrician & maintenance man and I use my Leatherman tool every day. I won't leave home without it! This tool kit makes my new Wave Supertool even more versatile. I also just ordered the tool adapter that enables you to utilize 1/4" hex drive bits - what more could one ask for? I've tried the others, but have always returned to the Leatherman brand!
- Handy to have around
     By A3SDLA7BUNSFLT on 2005-09-12
At first I was disappointed to see the new style. I can see the locking mechanism weaaring out and bits just falling out of the Leatherman. Leatherman's never let me down in the past, let's hope they keep their good reputation with this new design. The usefulness of this bit set goes almost without question. I carry it with me all the time and it's proven itself on several occassions.
If you want to fix almost anything almost anywhere, this bit set is good to have.
- Great Bit Kit and great service from Leatherman
     By A2QKZKDELJ1K0L on 2006-05-25
I have the Leatherman New Wave and absolutely love it. When I found that there was a bit kit available I got quite excited, as I often need other bits for fixing various things.
I thought the $13 price was reasonable considering what it would give me and what it would let me stop carrying. When the kit arrived I noticed that two bits were missing. I'm guessing that they slipped out of the holder (some of the bits are pretty loose) and then worked their way out of the box then the package. Today I called Leatherman and they are sending out bits to replace them at no charge.
As others have said, I rearranged mine to have the most commonly used bits on the same card. The card fit perfectly in the back of the leather New Wave sheath when turned so the bits are away from the tool (there's an elastic compartment for just such a purpose).
I would have liked to see a better choice of Torx bits, but aside from that I'm quite pleased.
- Wish there were more torx bits
     By A3TASTTD5AH6M on 2007-06-26
These are very nice bits, but I wish it came with a couple more torx bits. Some of these overlap the small bit set that came with my Charge TTI, so I would have liked some new bits.
- 42 tools + in the palm of your hand !
     By ANTXNAE3NSH4J on 2007-01-05
Ok, I admit being a tool freak.
Having said that you should also realize that I have owned thousands of knives and tools over a lifetime.
The Leatherman Surge and 42 piece bit assortment is without exception the most powerful combination that I've ever been able to hold in one hand.
This set has become my main travel set as well as being used in my survival kit for here in the mountains.
For light use the Swiss Army knives work well, for heavy use I prefer the Leatherman.
One thing that I would like to see is a sheath that holds this bit set as well as the knife.
Now there are separate.
Get out, have fun, enjoy life but like they say in Boy Scouts: " Be Prepared "
- Great Value Added Product
     By A2Y4BBTVX6N6D3 on 2007-02-27
Add my kudos to the chorus of capital reviews. The bit set truly expands the utility of the Leatherman and I am very satisfied with it's performance in the field. So far, under some rough usage, I have not broken a bit yet, nor lost a bit yet thanks to the nicely designed carriers.
It's not really a complaint, but I have had to fabricate my own "hard" carrying case for my bit carriers (made from a polycarbonate toothbrush case) because I didn't want to carry a separate sheath just for bits, the bits tended to snag in my pocket alone, and a smooth hard case (about the size of a pack of gum) is much more convenient to carry and deploy.
Also, I have a "wishlist" for further bits or tools that could snap right into the bit socket that would be handy and make it an even better survival/utility/professional tool. The Leatherman would not necessarily close with this fantasy "bit" in place, but it would certainly increase the utility of the Leatherman.
-a cylindrical ratchet adaptor device for the screwdrivers
-a handcuff key
-a small rectangular mirror with a magnetic base
-a small field lens (magnifier)
-small LED light, replaceable cheaply (that can be deployed concurrently with the screwdriver on the other "handle" of the Leatherman).
-a marlin spike for tough knots, perhaps lexan, that doubles as a non-conductive probe
-a pair of tweezers, like the Sliver Gripper that Norman Schwarzkopf endorses (you may laugh, but I actually use the tweezers on my SwissChamp quite a bit and I always wished my Leatherman had some).
Also, I always wished that the International Morse Code was engraved/cast/embossed on one of the titanium scales of the Leatherman.
- So far, so good!
     By A3G42R63885LIT on 2007-07-23
This tool junky just got her Leatherman New Wave multi-tool and bit set earlier today, and so far I love it (and I don't expect my feelings to change on this). I just posted some pictures onto Amazon - yes both cards and the knife itself fit fairly easily inside the leather sheath that came with my knife (facilitated by the elastic sides of the leather sheath), and you can still close the sheath with the snap button. (I'm not sure if everything would fit in the nylon knife sheath option.)
- not quite what I expected
     By A7POKXBSOY13A on 2008-06-03
I thought the bits and the tool would fit together in the sheath. It only fits one set and the sheath. It seems just a bit odd.
- Irony of Ironies
     By A237GKIJBSDCR7 on 2008-09-10
I love my Skeletool and my Bit Assortment. HOWEVER, ironically enough, the kit does not include a bit that allows you to remove the clip off of your Skeletool.
- Great extension for an already superb tool
     By A327LPKG5S1A0W on 2006-03-09
These bits have just extended the utility of my Wave leatherman. The carrying case is somewhat unnecessary as they reside within the nylon sheath that came with the Wave. I don't know if they would fit within the leather sheath. A very fine addition to an already great tool.
- Good Product
     By A3KDCI1XVF8VPO on 2006-07-10
I would recomend this, they fit nicely in the nylon pouch for my Leatherman Wave. It's very convient having torx bits with me at all times, with out having to carry another screwdriver.my only problem is that there is no phillips that is small enough to fit in small holes, the eyeglass one is often too small to do the job. this is a great product definatly pick one up
- Toolbox in a pocket pouch
     By A2P623MF7LPHAH on 2006-07-29
These bits make your Leatherman tool capable of things that you would have to carry a toolbox to do. Extremely handy and easy to carry.
- Does what it is supposed to do
     By A3G3QCX0TP6ZUA on 2007-03-13
I'm a lighting and audio guy, so this was a great addition to my Leatherman TTi. I don't have to worry about running around looking for an additional bit driver for 15 minutes losing valuable productivity. I now have just about everything i'll run across accessible on my leatherman. Brilliant!
- Great tool / small space
     By A1BDGJDTKGB118 on 2007-03-28
This thing is cool, I would like it even if I didn't need it!
Very compact, very strong.
nice addition to the portable tool kit.
- Now your Leatherman can do almost anything!
     By AT3F14PF375OR on 2007-05-30
This packet of tools enables your Leatherman to do almost anything! I have the Leatherman Wave...I take it camping and bicycling with me, because of it's great "fix it" capability! With the 42 bit assortment, I have a lot of tools with me without taking up a lot of space, in the event I need them. This Leatherman bit assortment is well worth having!
- An Improved Carrier
     By A27Z9VIKPXC900 on 2007-09-28
This is the second set of the add-on tool bits that I purchased for my Charge. The first set had a clear platic bit holder much like the manufacturer photos illustrate. The second set have the black bit holder. The original bit holder cracked apart when carried behind the Leatherman in the sheath causing some bits to be lost. The plastic was more riogid and suject to age cracking. The second appears to adress these problems. I am still carrying the bits in the ugly acessory case. I may move them to the sheath when I am convinced the holder will not self destruuct.
As other have mentioned, the bits expand the use of the multitool greatly and are certainly worth having. I have owned Leatherman tools since the first version was available.
- Cant have too many tools
     By A39NYQUNRVPU8W on 2007-12-21
I bought the bit assortment for my Charge about a month ago. The reason I bought it is because I broke the my eyeglass screwdriver. I found it was way more cost effective to buy the kit (cost per bit) then to buy the one bit, if you can find it. I now have expanded the capacity of my Leatherman by something like 30 tools. I build and remodel houses for a living, and I could not venture to guess how many times I did not have to look farther than my belt to open a switch box, remove a torks bolt, tighten an allen screw, and on and on. Worth its weight in gold would be an understatement. If you have a Leatherman Charge you know it's value. Buy the bit set!
Hope this helps, Derek
- And bike tires, too
     By AJJXZI0NFU8BQ on 2008-02-29
Most of the things I love about this bit set have already been said in other reviews but...did you notice that the ends of the nylon bit carriers have an odd upswept curve? Clearly they're meant to serve as a pair of tire tools when changing out bicycle tires. Pretty cool. I've only had the Wave plus the bit set for two days, and I've done two unanticipated repairs/adjustments with ease and pleasure. I love 'em.
- An excellent accessory
     By A1IUTYIY6PW8DU on 2008-04-23
This kit is an excellent accessory for a number of Leatherman tools. The one and only downside is that the kit is somewhat pricey. You are paying for the form and convenience of Leatherman's "new" bit design. That design is very compact and much more usable than the previous bits, which required a bulky adapter for most tools.
I bought the kit for use with the new Skeletool, which has two bits on board. I can swap them for the ones I need from the accessory kit. In addition, the bit kit comes with a nylon sheath, so you can easily carry all of the bits. I've found that I regularly use certain bits, so I put them on one of the plastic "cards" the bits are stored on, and that's all I carry.
The quality of the kit measures up to Leatherman standards. Everything Leatherman makes seems to be sculpted by an artist, and these bits are no exception. The steel is very high quality, and, so far, I haven't noticed any wear at all.
It's a pricey accessory, but one that I think is worth the cost. I'm happy I bought it, and I'd do so again.
- Haven't gotten an opportunity to use this yet
     By A2BUX0XLL1FM8L on 2008-05-02
The screwdriver pieces that come with the Leatherman Tool itself get a lot of use, but this extra kit... I have not been able to find a use for it at all. I bought the Skeletool, which has a removeable belt clip on the side. The bit needed to remove and reattach/tighten the removable belt clip's attachment screw doesn't even come with this expanded set, so what good is a removeable belt clip if you can't even put it back on properly or keep it on tight using the tools they give you? Spend your money on something more useful.
- bit assortment
     By A1XR9YXCH7UAUL on 2008-05-11
This is a nice addition to my Leatherman Wave and Skeletool with a wide variety of bits. The nylon sheath comes in handy too.
Thanks,
Chris Cunningham
- Leatherman Bit Assortment
     By A319UCRTOK0V9P on 2008-09-02
A nice assortment of double-sided bits. Although they're made of flat stock, they've worked well for all of the bit types, even the hex bits that are missing two points because of the flat stock design. Only complaint is that the tiny eyeglass double bit does not work with the Skeletool CX I purchased at the same time.
- Missing sheath, Amazon is no help
     By AN8BJ6BCQ1U59 on 2008-09-09
Amazon sold this item and failed to include the sheath. When contacted, they said they can't send out a partial order and to contact Leatherman to see if I could buy a separate sheath. Poor customer service and an utter failure to acknowledge their own mistakes makes Amazon a last choice for me anymore. I used to like shopping here, but it's become a hassle.
