  • Note: Choose other SanDisk product for Compact Flash

    By A3NCR2RI9TKVGV on 2004-10-04
A visit to SanDisk's web site confirms that the 6-in-1 PC Card adapter is for SD/MMC/SmartMedia/Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro/xD. It will not work with Compact Flash as mentioned in the short description. SanDisk has two other products available on Amazon for use with Compact Flash cards.

  • Be aware of capacity limitations

    By AIYBYPLRQBIR2 on 2006-06-28
People trying to buy this card adapter should be aware of the following capacity limitations, you may notice that for MMC, SM and MS, the adapter is actually useless,
    - SD (up to 1GB)
    - MultiMediaCard (up to 128MB)
    - SmartMedia (up to 128MB)
    - Memory Stick (up to 128MB)
    - Memory Stick PRO (up to 1GB)
    - xD-Picture cards (up to 512MB, none M or H)
And the card adapter also has some compatibility problem, it doesnot work with my IBM T42, but OK with my Lenovo T60 and my friend's Toshiba, but this could be a problem of my laptop instead of the adapter itself.

  • An Excellent Product!

    By A242IFN64X6R4E on 2004-11-25

At first I thought that this adapter wasn't being recognized by my 3 year old Compaq 2700T laptop when I first inserted it, and then I discovered that it becomes recongized when you insert any one of the 6 media card types into it. When I put a Secure Digital card into it the adapter and the card's 'contents' were immediately recognized. All pictures on the card were successfully downloaded to the hard drive.

I have not tried any of the other media card types yet, but I have no reason to believe that they shouldn't behave just as well as the Secure Digital card.

This was a GREAT choice I made! This gives me one more option for making sure that I am able to download and store my digital pictures. Buy it if you have a notebook PC and need an 'extra' option for downloading 'your' digital pics. Also, I would not get it unless you have 2 or more varieties of media cards.

Be aware that this card adapter does not allow for downloading the Compact Flash variety of media card; for that, there is another adapter product by SanDisk for the Compact Flash variety.

I hope I have helped somebody with this review.

  • Works great!

    By A391TX8SRS6PEL on 2007-04-15
I bought this to use in the NAV system of my 2007 Honda Civic. It works perfectly with 1 and 2G SD cards - I put 1.77G of MP3s on the 2G card and was able to listen to all of them. SD cards fit so that the end of the SD is flush with the end of the PCMCIA card.

  • No compatible with cards over 512mb

    By A1FHIVXO4VT538 on 2005-06-20
I owned one of these for compact flash worked great.

Bought this one for my new digital camera and found out that it doesn't support anything above 512mb. Too bad it wasn't listed on the item at amazon.com.

Tech support from Sandisk is the one who informed me of the limitation after struggling to get the PC Card to work correctly.

Probably works great for anything 512mb and under.

  • Does not work with 2GB SD card
    By AY11ACHX7O4X9 on 2006-03-21
This adaptor does not work with large SD Card (greater than 1 GB). On my 2GB SD card it work fine when the total used space is below 1GB. When it goes beyond 1GB, I start to encounter error. I tried formatting the 2GB card, it shows as 1GB good and 1GB error.
Finally I bought the SanDisk 12-in-1 USB Reader and it read/write my 2GB card without any problem.

If you need to access 2GB SD cards, get a different adapter.

  • slow transfers compared to USB 2.0 readers
    By A3AIA904KUIIBX on 2006-02-15
    Products used for comparison testing:
    - Dell Latitude D410 notebook running Windows XP SP2
    - Dell Latitude D610 notebook running Windows XP SP2
    - Sandisk 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter
    - Sandisk ImageMate 12-in-1 USB 2.0 Reader/Writer
    - Sandisk Ultra II 2GB SD card

    Installation:
The 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter was easily recognized by both notebooks and did not require any additional drivers or software. One difference between this and the ImageMate is that the ImageMate will be detected by the operating system and it will assign 4 drive letters automatically regardless of whether or not any media is inserted. The PC Card Adapter will not be detected unless I insert the SD card into the memory slot. When the SD card is removed, the assigned drive letter disappears from Windows Explorer.

    Compatibility with memory tested:
I only tested this with a standard Sandisk 256MB SD card and a Sandisk Ultra II 2GB SD card: both cards worked fine. The PC Card adapter had no problems reading or writing to the 2GB card, despite the large capacity.

    Transfer rates:
I tested transfer rates with my 2GB SD card and a 428 MB folder that included 32 files roughly about 14MB each. Copying the folder over using the ImageMate reader via USB 2.0 resulted in a copy time of roughly 50 seconds. Using the PC Card Adapter, the entire process took 8 minutes and 10 seconds. Similar results were found for both Dell notebooks.

    Ergonomics:
Inserting an SD card requires a little care because there isn't anything to really guide it along... but that's the only way they can get 6 in 1 to work in a slim PC card. Removing the SD card is also a little difficult unless you have long nails as the card is flush with the edge of the notebook. If you have large fingers, it may be necessary to eject the entire PC card from the notebook in order to remove the memory card from the reader.

    Summary:
I was hoping to be able to replace the ImageMate with the 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter for reading/writing to SD cards while on the go, but the slow transfer rates make it very undesirable for me to use when managing digital music or photos stored on my SD card. Also, inserting/removing SD cards from the device requires a bit of caution to prevent any damage to the card or reader itself. For these two reasons, I give the card only 3 stars. However, it is convenient for moving small files and it works even with 2GB SD cards so I plan to keep it as a backup for those times I foget to carry the ImageMate.

  • Works perfectly, even with 2GB SD
    By A1MFSLZH3EMUIC on 2007-05-12
I've has no problems with this adapter. It fits perfectly in my Honda radio. It works perfectly with my 2GB SD card (the manufacturer's web site and other vendors warn that it will not work with cards over 1GB).

  • It works for some but not others.
    By A1D7QS58TFWICJ on 2006-01-07
I bought this product at the same time as my xD 1 gig (type M). Well, when I just got off the phone with Sandisk, this model will never work with Type M xD and there are no plans to patch the PC Card adpater.
Why didn't they just put in the disclaimer "Does Not Work With Type M xD Memory"????
It was a lot of work trying to find the right adaptor, a lot of time wasted...

  • POWERBOOK USERS: AVOID!
    By A35TD8QAUMV0DB on 2006-02-11
I bought this 6-in-1 because it was the cheapest PCMCIA reader I could find that could read SD cards. Turns out it is a total loss in my PowerBook G4 "Aluminum" because it is near impossible to eject. There are tiny metal tabs (somewhat loose, I might add) that catch on the side of the PowerBook's PCMCIA slot. It is worth noting that the card fits and ejects just fine in my roomate's Dell, so it may be a situation where this works fine in most computers, but not those built exactly to spec (or those without a little wiggle room).

That said, I also gave the card a poor rating because it is hard to insert memory into the 6-in-1 slot. SD cards go in kinda crooked and you have to use too much force to line them up with the reader. Overall, I don't recommend this product.

  • Works with Large Cards
    By A185I1FMGZM88D on 2005-09-26
Some reviews have indicated that the adapter may not work with large memory cards. Before buying I e-mailed Sandisk directly and asked them if it would work with my 1GB Extreme III SD card. They said it would, and it does. It works exactly as I would expect it to under Windows XP. No problems, no complaints.

  • Sandisk SD card reader
    By A1P7O8RHNNBHRX on 2005-09-07
Bought this for my wife's laptop so she can read SD cards directly without using the USB cable to her camera. It is simple to install, slips into the PCMCIA slot, and with the SD card inserted it sits flush with the side of the laptop. The only drawback is you can't extract the SD card without removing the reader. (Maybe the fingers of a 5-year old could do it?) Nice quality product.

  • ADEQUATE - BUT ROUGH ON THE EDGES
    By A1UCAVBNJUZMPR on 2005-08-18
This adapter works, BUT... using it for Memory Stick Pro media, the insertion of the Mem Stick into the adapter is not guided very well and can go in crooked and not seat. The adapter card itself, hangs up upon trying to eject it from the PCMCIA slot. It catches on something and I can't see what, there are no nicks or friction marks on any of the edges anywhere on the card.

  • Works great with Civic navigation system.
    By A3RV9H85FZE8OK on 2007-08-25
I am using this adapter with a 2GB SD card with my Civic's navigation system and it works great. On the Sandisk website it says the adapter can only handle up to a 1GB SD card, but I have had no issues with the 2GB card. If you are looking for a PC card adapter for your navigation system, just buy this one and save yourself some time doing anymore research. Booyaca!

  • PC card
    By A1PHJUVNKYL59D on 2007-10-24
I bought this product for something that is probably irregular to everyone. I bought it for my 07 honda civic si with the nav system. In the dashboard, it accepts a "pc card" so I ventured to the internet to figure out what I need to get for this to work, as it's a lot better than using CDs, and when I bought it, found out it's a lot faster (read speed). This works with honda vehicles! It's so awesome! I run it with a 2 gb SD card, works perfectly. My boss (I work at radioshack) informed me it probably won't accept 4 gb SD cards since it's SDHC, it may work, it may not. Up to you to try it.

  • Works Great !
    By A2F8JOVB4ZNACM on 2005-08-10
Works great on my Macintosh powerbook G4, with a SD512 card.
I also use it to transfert files from my mac to my friend's PC : much faster than a usb key...

  • Works, but Limited
    By A3VFAE9GYE3VVZ on 2007-08-31
Works great in a Honda in-dash PC card reader which is what I purchased it for, but be aware of certain limitations. Will only write and possibly read (haven't tried it) up to 1 gig for SD cards. I would also suggest using a separate USB card reader to transfer your larger files. Transfers using the PC card adapter can be very slow.

  • Works well for what I need it
    By A1POO8HA01AD96 on 2007-12-31
I got this recently to put into my Honda Civic Navigational audio system. Using a 2GB SD card and this adapter, it reads quickly and it fits well.

  • Definitely a good buy

Bought it for using in my Honda Civic. working great ..Strongly recommend this for use in Cars..

  • Warning: 16-bit adapter cards are OLD TECHNOLOGY! Stick with 32-bit
    By AGH8IXZSHXEZS on 2008-04-26
I don't know why these types of cards are still on the market--they are old, slow, and obsolete. Instead, search for 32-bit Cardbus adapters such as the ones made by Viking, Delkin, or Lexar, which are many times faster but not much more expensive. And, they fit in the same PC card slot on most laptops made in the last decade. The 32-bit cards I have used are even a bit faster than USB 2.0 and Firewire.

You can spot 32-bit cards by the gold strip at the top of the card. No gold strip? Then prepare to wait an hour or more for your data to transfer, while your laptop is brought to its knees. The old silver cards may be fine for storing and playing mp3s, or may be needed for laptops made more than 10 years ago, but any large amount of data--such as GBs of photos or video-- will take quite a while to copy over. Why would you want a reader that is SLOWER than your flash media?

  • Another great device from Sandisk
    By A90L8N27FQNVU on 2005-06-30
I've been using this device to transfer files to my laptop from my digital camera. It has been working flawlessly. I thought about getting a usb hub device to read memory cards, but I settled on this because of the small form factor. It fits in my laptop carrying case very well. Another excellent device from Sandisk.

  • Quite a handy ...
    By A2NHFN1K379R9H on 2007-07-14
... gadget for us who have more than one sort of card to read. Works fine, no problems under Debian GNU/Linux on a ThinkPad.

  • Working in Civic and 32-bit card won't
    By A25TAK11MT9FNM on 2008-06-14
SanDisk 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter works in the Honda Civic PC Card slot.
I also own the Viking Interworks 32-Bit High Speed 5-in-1 Flash Cardbus PCMCIA PC card. It does not work in the Civic. It appears to go into the slot, but the Navigation screen will not close.

I'm using 2 GIG SD cards in the SanDisk adapter.

  • worked as advertised.
    By A1GQ7BGUDXGYUR on 2006-03-15
I was able to plug it in on both my Windows/XP and NetBSD laptops and it got regognized and my camera's memory card appeared as a disk drive.

  • Excellent Product

Perfect for laptops. Don't need a seperate card reader anymore. Just plug and play!

  • San Disk 6 in 1 PC Card Adapter
    By AUP14HNJE13EW on 2007-01-04
Initially I liked and enjoyed the adapter. It allowed me to us a digital card to listen to music in the car. However, it no longer works and I will be exchanging it.

  • It is fast and works great
    By A33J85DM04IIF on 2007-09-03
This is a perfect device for anybody with a laptop that uses a lot of digital cameras. It works great and goes significantly faster than the default camera cable that I used to use. I have never had any problems with it and would recommend this highly. I recommend using it with picasa from google to organize your photos.

  • The worst Sandisk adapter that I ever had
    By A1UXYY8P4A32V1 on 2008-02-08
I really like the sandisk product... but this PC Card adapter is the worst pcmcia card adapter that I ever had. I have only TWO WEEKS with this item and I DON'T KNOW how this thing stops to work... simply the slot is obstructed with the own pins... This item is VERY DELICATE and I'm a very care full person... lamentably I live outside of the United States, so I can't do nothing... I want my money back!!!... this thing doesn't work!... sincerely only for paperweight...

  • I feel a little unhappy
