Universal Pet Barrier By A1X6OZIE0IP0QG on 2006-07-03
Easy to install, provides sufficent barrier for pet in rear cargo area of my Subaru Forester. If you want to use it with rear seat-back folded down you will need extra bar sold seperately.
Fits the Bill By AJDSCN6SJ5VNE on 2006-02-15
Works as expected but I have both the Highland and the Outland pet divider and they seem to work the same. I would take the Outland at $19.99 and pocket the $10 difference.
Works fine for a small station wagon By A3QQ3CVXZ76L4I on 2006-07-05
We wanted a barrier to keep our German Shepherd from nosing our backseat passengers in our Ford Escort wagon. Petco and Petsmart had versions of this for $60-$70. I was a little hesistant to order online because there weren't any MINIMUM dimensions (lots of maximum heights for SUVs). However, this works great (it would fit even in a smaller space, if there are any smaller cars out there) and was less than half the cost of buying from a pet supply company.
Good for the price, but needs handywork - REVIEW CHANGED 4/16/08 By A70O4Q07GH2IZ on 2008-03-21
The Good:
- Great price.
- Attractive.
- Doesn't effect visibility while driving.
- Very adjustable for any vehicle, especially with optional extension.
- Easily movable.
- Keeps my 60 lb. dog where I want him. My dog hasn't tried to wreck the barrier. NOT TRUE. HE DESTROYED IT IN ABOUT 1 MINUTES THE FIRST TIME HE TRIED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY!
- Easy setup with good instructions. NOT TRUE. FIRST INSTALL WAS EASY, BUT CONSTANTLY NEEDED ADJUSTMENT
- Light weight.
The Bad:
- As somebody else mentioned, could use a spring to maintain tension. Not a problem with my vehicle. I HAD TO GLUE IN THE BASE AND LUBRICATE THE THREADED ROD TO EASILY TIGHTEN WHEN THE UNIT WAS ON THE VEHICLE. YOU DON'T WANT THIS UNIT UNLESS YOU HAVE GOOD HANDYMAN KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL.
- If your dog is medium or big and tries to get through this barrier, it will not hold him or her for five minutes, and will get destroyed in the process. WHAT WAS "BAD", IS NOW UGLY. MY DOG ISN'T THAT ACTIVE OR EXCITABLE. HE JUST DECIDED HE WANTED TO SIT IN FRONT WITH ME, AND IT TOOK HIM A MINUTE OR SO TO DO SO. I STILL LOVE HIM, BUT NOT THE BARRIER.
- There is enough space between the bars for an active chewer to destroy the back of your seat. Chewers need a barrier they can't stick their head through.
The Ugly:
- The screws provided are cheap and poorly designed, with very small Philips slots than don't allow you to get enough torque to secure the barrier bars. I don't get it. For less than a dime, the factory could have included what I replaced them with: hex-head 6 x 3/4" sheet-metal screws that work great. THEY ENDED UP JUST OK. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET THE CLAMPS REALLY TIGHT IN DAILY USE.
- THE TUBES ARE LIGHTWEIGHT ALUMINUM, EASILY DENTED BY STRONG DOG JAWS, EASILY BENT BY A MEDIUM SIZE DOG. THEY WOULD BE BETTER IF MADE OF MEDIUM GAGE STEEL.
In summary, if it works for your dog and you're handy enough to compensate for design and material flaws, this would rate 5 stars because of the low price, good looks, visibility, and adjustability. If your dog destroys it or chews your car seat through the wide spaces, if it slips around in your vehicle, or if you can't get the bars screwed down tight, this would rate 1 star. My rating is the average between those two. It's about 4 stars for me because a product shouldn't require so much tinkering, but it works great for me and my dog.
BUT NOW I'D CHANGE THE RATING TO 1 STAR FOR MY DOG.
May as well give the dog the keys to the car By A2IHX967HLGRC1 on 2006-11-10
Cheap, cheap, cheap.
The screws don't tighten-up enough to secure the bars from moving, so the dog can slide them up and down and from side to side. Sometime they even went from side to side when I was turning a corner. The top and bottom "feet" slide out of place no matter how much you tighten the wing nut. Twice, while driving down the road, the thing just fell on top of the dog!!!After securing all the moving parts with duct tape and gluing rubber on the feet in an attempt to keep them from moving, which they still do...( & I'm still trying to replace the seatbelt that the dog ate before I found out the bars slide,I am using it, but I wish I had bought a better brand. Don't buy this product. Spend a little more and get a better barrier.
- easy to use
     By A1YBLJRYQDO4EH on 2006-03-13
This product is very easy to install and use. It works great, but may need to be tightened periodically because of slipping and dog contact.
- works great, great price
     By A18QHMWOG7YU64 on 2007-02-02
I installed this in my Mazda3 5 door wagon the day it arrived (which was very fast I might add). It fit perfectly. The height of the barrier was just low enough to fit in my wagon, so it didn't require a lot of adjusting that way. The bars slide out on the sides to fit the width of the wagon nicely. I've had my three Boston Terriers back there numerous times now. No escaping possible! I had looked through different pet stores for a barrier like this, but they were 3 times the price! This is a great deal.
- Ok for the money
     By AUM498YHT3DFS on 2007-03-30
This is not a terribly expensive product and for the price, it works ok. It easily fit my Jeep Cherokee--no need for the extensions which was nice. However, it required modifications for it to stay in place. The screws which are supposed to hold the cross pieces in place do not tighten enough and my dog was able to push between the cross pieces and slide them apart! My husband used clamps to secure the cross pieces and they now work fine. The device could use some spring tension to tighten it between floor and ceiling as well because it can get knocked out of place (without even loosening). All that being said, if you are handy with a few tools, this barrier works well and is rather streamlined and unobtrusive.
- Excellent Barrier
     By AM0Y1BV8OFAFL on 2006-09-15
I installed this in a Ford Explorer and I am very pleased.I had an old style wire barrier that was heavy and cumbersome to use.
This is lightweight and sturdy. My shepard mix dog weighs in around 100 lbs. and does not like being caged and he cannot knock it down.
Saves all the work cleaning dog hair off the seats.Well worth the price around 30.00.
- pet barrier
     By A338RHCVCUCCCJ on 2007-01-11
The barrier is the perfect size and just what I wanted but the joining bolts/screws do not stay tight so it slips of falls on occasion.
- Not that great
     By A2RVNTJW1P56AF on 2007-03-31
Maybe it depends on the car, but I couldn't get it tight enough in my SUV to prevent the dogs from knocking it down. It also probably depends on the dog. If the dog really wants to get past it, they will. If you have a more mellow dog who will be satisfied with a "psychological barrier", this would be ok. Oh, and as a previous reviewer mentioned, the "trombone" style sides slide easily back and forth, I had to get some hose clamps to keep them in place.
- Great product
     By A1MLELWLD9SEJ6 on 2006-02-28
I ordered this through a local auto store. Easy to set up- takes about 20 min. The directions are a bit "rough" (not the best English) but there are pictures to help you along. After installed it works great. Can't beat it for the price!
- Pet Barrier
     By A1WQ1M3IRP2I73 on 2007-01-09
This product satisfies about 95% of what I wanted it to. It accomplishes the purpose - keeping the dog from jumping into the backseat. However, the bottom stabilizing feet are a little awkward to adjust and tend to fall out of the apparatus if you don't secure them. I also had a little trouble keeping the horizontal bar parts from slipping downward. Overall, this product was worth the $26 or so dollars I paid for it!
- Don't buy for a HONDA ELEMENT!!!
     By A1IVYLAYB9Y79Y on 2007-02-20
Never fit my car, Even after adding extention rods. Product seemed ok.
- Doesn't Work for LARGE dogs
     By ALEHVR4OSZBNY on 2007-04-08
It is ok for small dogs, large dogs will knock it down.
- Can't beat the price
     By AEM6D37SYEET0 on 2007-06-12
Price for similar product on-line was at least $50 not including shipping and the pet stores even higher. It fits my Toyota Highlander beautifully. Need to periodically recheck and adjust the tension, but it is so easy to do and so easy to remove and reinstall.
- Easy installation

Installed quickly and easily on our Nissan X-Trail. We didn't need the extension kit.
- Awesome for the price

I have a rottweiler and a pitbull and it keeps them both in the back of my explorer

     By A1Z8LJM9QF77ED on 2007-04-14
It works great and never falls down. My dog isnt too rough with it, and Im not sure if she was if it would still stay up but it does what I needed it to do, keep her from sitting on my brand new car seats!
- Not for clever dogs
     By A1XXJ8G0G40BHS on 2007-11-05
This barrier did not work at all for my beagle/hound mix. If you have a small to medium sized dog that will make any attempt to get through the barrier, it will not work. The bars slide out of place both horizontally and vertically. I actually even called the manufacturer to see if they could give us any tips to make it work better. They said to try putting the screws in backwards to keep the bars from sliding vertically. This does work, but the screws they provide aren't long enough so we had to go buy a bunch of screws and hex nuts. However the bars were still sliding from side to side and our dog was able to get out. We secured the bars with duct tape, thinking this would finally give us a working product, but alas, the feet slide on the all-weather mat in our cargo area, so the dog can still get out. This product might work for you if you have a dog that isn't a little escape artist like mine, but it seems that this barrier will allow your pet to get out with the slightest application of pressure.
- Works very well. Sometimes rattles slightly.
     By A26OTAW7VHBJ42 on 2008-06-30
I use the Highland 20046 Pet Barrier and 1 extension kit in my 2008 Ford Taurus X. I recommend the product highly. I am battling with a slight rattling sound. But I'm pretty sure I'll be able to eliminate the problem by using the tightening screws like I'm supposed to! I recommend this product. Incidentally, I also employ an off-white mosquito netting barrier to keep the dog hair (Yellow Lab) out of the passenger compartment. This works amazingly well. I've had the dog in the car for hours and there is almost *no* hair where the passengers sit! FYI: attached a velcro strip all the way across the ceiling with the adhesive side (the side with glue) down. Then I took another velcro strip with the adhesive side up and attached the two strips. I then connect the mosquito net to the down-side of the lower strip of velcro. This deploys quickly and I can remove it in a hurry, too. I recommend both. Oh... visibility through the metal pet barrier and the mosquito net is totally fine. No problems! :-)
- Easy to assemble & Solid construction
     By A1MYKP9C3K7ZZ0 on 2007-06-12
Got it around lunchtime, 20 minutes later, it was installed and on the road with 2 Pugs in tow. Fits very nicely in Volvo Station wagon, solid construction and ease of assembly make this a great buy for me.
Had no problem taking it down when I needed to fold down the back seat for cargo space, then after unloading, it went back up easily.
Stands up to 2 Pugs, 21 & 26 lbs. despite thier best efforts, they could not move it or get through it.
Great product for the price!
- Great product
     By A12N1YM8GZEUY1 on 2007-11-09
This is a great product. Easy to assemble, very adjustable, looks great, and works like a charm. Many reviews said that the tightening screws were not sufficient and that the product did not stay in place. I found the opposite to be true. I tightened the screws thoroughly, adjusted the foot wingnuts to allow the feet to secure to the cargo board and ceiling, and had no problems with my beagle loosening the brace or knocking it over. I'm thinking the complaints came from operator error. I found this product to work as described after assembly out of the box; no additional hardware required. I highly recommend.
- Inexpensive solution
     By A93LDNFBMTP48 on 2007-12-01
This inexpensive pet barrier is simply and intelligently designed and easy to assemble and install. It does exactly what I wanted in keeping a 30-pound dog out of the passenger compartment in a 2004 Subaru Forester. I couldn't ask for more.
- works as advertised
     By A2DR7GY731G4VY on 2007-12-11
With a baby on the way, I bought this so I could make trips to see our parents and have the baby in the 2nd row seat of our Navigator. I have a very hyper dog and I need to keep him behind the second row seat on trips so he doesn't accidentally jump on the baby. We installed it with ease and tested it on a recent trip to my parents. It worked like a charm. Kept our doggie in the area he need to be at and it was easy to uninstall after the trip.
- Flimsy But Does the Job
     By ANX8CRPUXIXMR on 2008-01-14
I was not very impressed with this item, but it's enough of a mental barrier to keep our Saint Bernard in the back of the car where she belongs during normal circumstances. I wouldn't recommend this product if you have a very aggressive or excitable dog.
- Works okay in a Volvo XC
     By A1WL8VG4HCX6UI on 2008-02-22
I share the others issues about the bars ability to move, but it is a simple fix to secure them and at half the price of comparable models, I think it is worth it. Seems to keep my precocious 1 yr Lab in the back (much to her dismay!).
- barrier
     By A268BWK588E3ST on 2008-02-27
I do like this barrier, but the only issue i have is that i cant get the screws in tight so it slids if my dogs put their head on it
- Highland Pet Barrier
     By A25LX05JX2OS14 on 2008-03-01
This product works for me, but not without adjustments. I have a rather calm large dog, but he was able to push the entire unit backwards or forwards in my van. He could also push the trombone-like bars in and push past. I had to buy chains and fit them around the upright bars and attach them to the seats to secure the unit. Next I had to buy these clamps and tighten them on the trombone-like bars so they would no longer move in. If your dog is small and doesn't challenge a thing, this product would probably need no adjustment.
- Keeping Fido in his place.
     By A3V7UQ7WYZ95TP on 2008-03-02
We adopted an energetic 2 yr. old lab. We travel frequently by car and we tried 'Dog Whisperer' techniques to keep our guy in the back, but it was not working. The Highland Pet Barrier is perfect. It fits easily into our Honda CRV or our larger suv's, Grand Cherokee. It's legs screw in or out to adjust the height. The horizontal arms slide out trombone like and then can be locked to fit the car's width. We attached bungee cords around the back seat head rests to allow us to 'angle' the barrier, placing the legs snug against the seat base, giving our pooch the entire back cargo area. It works wonderfully. No more dog trying to drive. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS. And the price was terrific! I saw some at 3 times the price. Shpg. was very prompt. If you're considering it go for it.
