Uniden BC72XLT Handheld Scanner (Black)x$69.99

(47 reviews)

Best Price: $69.99

NASCAR, 100 Channel, 10 Banks Compact Scanner, Race Track Operation, Easily Programs & Selects The Race & Drivers You Want To Listen To, Pre-Programmed Service Searches, Public Safety, Air Marine, CB News Media, FRS, GMRS, Railroad, Ham, Specials & Much More, Weather Scan, Close Call RF Capture Technology, Instantly Tunes To Nearby Signals, Covers Bands 25-54, 108-174, 406-512 MHz.

Versatile, compact, and easy to use, the Uniden BC72XLT handheld scanner offers a simple way to monitor the "action" bands, including police and fire channels (including rescue and paramedics), NOAA weather transmissions, business and industrial radio broadcasts, utilities, marine and amateur (ham radio) bands, air bands, and more. In short, the scanner keeps interested parties in the information loop. Of course, scanning the 32,000 available frequencies can be time-consuming and frustrating, which is why Uniden added such functions as Close Call capture technology, which instantly tunes to signals from nearby transmitters to help you detect and identify local signals, and a comprehensive memory that holds up to 100 programmed channels (10 per bank).

The scanner also offers six preset service banks, with preset frequencies for police, fire/emergency, aircraft, ham, marine, and weather, making it easy to locate specific types of calls. And should you want to regularly monitor a few specific channels, you can designate them as "priority" channels. The BC72XLT will then check those channels every two seconds while it scans each bank, so you never miss an important transmission. Other scanning functions include 10 programmable search ranges for finding unlisted frequencies in your area and a two-second scan delay that lets you hear any replies to the original transmission before moving on.

A scanner is fairly useless if you can't decipher the transmission, which is why the BC72XLT is outfitted with triple-conversion circuitry. The technology virtually eliminates any interference from IF images and clarifies the selected frequency, so you needn't strain to pick up certain words or phrases. And thanks to the key lock, you won't accidentally change the programming while carrying the scanner in your pocket. Add in a memory backup that preserves stored frequencies even if the scanner loses power and an easy-to-read, backlit display and you're ready for virtually any scanning situation.

The scanner comes with a flexible antenna with a BNC connector, ensuring adequate reception in strong signal areas (a separately sold external antenna will further improve reception), along with an AC adapter. As an alternative, you can power the scanner using two AA alkaline or rechargeable batteries (the latter can even be recharged while in the scanner). The unit measures 2.75 by 4.5 by 1.25 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

What's in the Box
Scanner, AC adapter, flexible antenna, belt clip, frequency guide, user's manual. MPN: BC72XLT - UPC: 050633650394

  • small size, big performance

    By A2V0N9027IM7ZU on 2007-01-23
As they say, "a little bit of knowledge goes a long way..." If you live in or near a big city, this scanner will do absolutely no good because large metropolitan police forces use a trunk communication system due to the large number of units at work at one time. These systems aren't actually scrambled, but due to high volume of calls, it would be hard of a single scanner unit to keep track of them so while you might be able to hear one end of the converstaion, you won't necessarily be able to hear the other.

This unit is perfect for smaller cities which use frequencies betweem 153.0000 and 169.0000 for their police communications. The unit is also good for tracking airport traffic and, as you know by now, NASCAR events. The best thing to do when scanning for new frequencies is to have access to a code book for your area so you'll know what you're listening to at the time.

If you're technologically-challenged in any way, you're better off letting someone who knows what they're doing program the basic channels for you. I like the fact that's it's a lot smaller and not as heavy as its predecesors. It's a conspicuous as a mobile phone and a lot easier to carry on your belt without it getting in the way.

  • This is a good scanner if you don't want to scan the Police

    By ASVMG20M8Z4L on 2006-03-28
I don't know much about scanners so I read all the reviews and download the manual, read it and found out that the police frequencies where pre-programmed for scan. So I figured I could scan police frequencies. Well they forgot to write the part that says that all police frequencies are coded and you can't hear a thing. So if you want to scan anything but the police this is your scanner.
This scanner is great for airplanes

  • o.k scanner

    By A3DO9R7WDO6936 on 2006-04-11
This is a good scanner if you do not mind having the 800 mhz unavailable. Easy to use. Good price. Long wait time if you need to return this item to Amazon. BC92XLT from J&R Electronics has the 800 mhz for $30 more.

  • Not what I expected

    By A1V5RRE1OWS296 on 2005-07-16
I was shocked when this arrived and saw it was a " NASCAR " scanner. Granted the scanner may work wonderful, I will never know, and sure I could get a case to cover it, but I want this on my desk, I don't want to pay good money for a big surprise LOGO on the scanner.
Not that im against Nascar, I just don't want it on my desk and on my scanner. They should of mentioned that in the ad.
    This one is going back.

  • Tiny Scanner, But BIG on Features!

    By A2T0195LWPTNVW on 2005-03-17
This scanner is about as great as they come for its size!
Bearcat has a solid reputation and has been around a long while.
Its loaded with features crammed into a tiny box no bigger than your cell phone and fits well in your shirt pocket.
What I like about it is that it goes anywhere, uses only 2AA batteries, and works a good long time before the juice runs out.
It also comes with an AC adapter that seems to even help boost the signal somewhat.
The reception is very good with its slap on antenna, and 100 channels, 25mhz on up to 512UHF, is more than enough for those most popular and famous citizens band radio, police and emergency frequencies.
    You better get one!

  • A real disappointment
    By A34D4ASUYV6D19 on 2007-03-20
My #1 use for this scanner is for public safety scanning - I have family in law enforcement & we like to listen in.

I own a Uniden BC248CLT, & for years I owned a BC80XLT handheld. My BC80XLT was recently damaged & needed replaced. I ordered this BC72XLT, & am ready to return it also. It is not anywhere near the quality my prior Uniden handheld was. My 80 picked up as well or better than my 248 does here at home. This 72 picks up maybe 50% of the traffic of my others--whether in the house, outside, or even right in town. The buttons on this are awful, too. I have to go through multiple steps to do things that took only 1 button press on the 80. The reception, though, is my biggest concern AND complaint. I never had to purchase any extra antenna or such for my other Uniden handheld to get the better reception. Also, the volume, even at max output, is only "normal" listening level--so if I am in a noisy environment, I cannot turn it up to hear it better. My old BC80XLT had much better volume.

An additional warning - Uniden's Support has gone down the toilet. I thought Uniden was a company that would at least *acknowledge* my complaint, and maybe even have some suggestions of a better product - all I got was an auto reply that I should hear from Customer Service in 2-3 business days--and then I never heard a thing. I checked my support question on their site, and it was marked "closed." Good luck!

  • A good scanner
    By AQNE3LHTA9Y0X on 2006-07-28
This is the first scanner i have ever owned, and I must say its a good scanner. I bought it to listen to railroad communications mainly. I do listen to local police dept's (3 of them) and they all come in clear. I would say its a great scanner and the programming is not THAT hard, but it does take a little getting used to. Also, the antenna that comes with it can prove a little useless everyonce in a while, but i think thats with most of the scanners. So, if you buy a good antenna for this thing, it will work GREAT.

  • Uniden Bearcat BC72XLT Scanner programability
    By A1VYWMN4QH4ZDY on 2006-03-25
I did not do enough research before buying this scanner. You cannot connect it to a computer to program. Everything has to be manually programmed. It arrived blank. It is not user friendly and takes quite a bit of work to learn how to program. It is not for new users, The scanner works well after you get it programmed,

  • Easy, Addicting, Exciting, Surprising!
    By A2HMC58FRY8BM9 on 2006-08-26
I bought this scanner to use at the Bristol Night race in August 2006. I fully expected this unit to do well as a race scanner, but was pleasantly surprised to find out it is a tiny powerhouse of excitement! I turned it on and easily scanned right into the local police bands and immediately got into some action! Then I scanned the "air" frequencies, and got some air chatter from a small "shuttle" plane coming into Tri Cities Regional Airport.

I thought I would only use this twice a year at the track...little did I know I would find a new hobby.

Forget these people that say it's hard to figure out. I was up and running in 5 minutes tops. It's a BREEZE and is very intuitive. 5 stars all the way!

  • A SCANNER THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE!
    By A3SQZ1AVX5S5ZC on 2007-07-28
This scanner is everything that I expected it to be. It's small and compact, it's easy to hear, it's easy to program, and it's very useful. The price was very reasonable and it was well worth the money. I don't go a day without listening to it and it goes everywhere with me. The only negative thing about it is the batteries don't last long and when I have it in the car, the signal isn't very strong. If you purchase it, make sure you use rechargeable batteries with it, or if you are home, just keep it plugged in using the adapter that comes with it. Other than that, I highly recommend this scanner to everyone.

  • Very good scanner
    By A137VN2PWXWH2C on 2006-01-15
I listen to it almost every day and it does the job. It is very easy to use. I will enjoy it every day.
I am a railfain and listen to the railroad frequences. They come in clear.
    Thank You

  • Not the scanner for you - if you're a Geek!
    By A3173QNAMV5W93 on 2006-12-28
This is an awesome scanner. Compact, powerful, and loaded with features. Easy to use right out of the box. Scans police frequencies, too! Crisp and clear sound quality. This is my 4th scanner I've had (I'm a Fire-medic)and it's wonderful. But if you're so freaking inept that you can't function without using a computer to find your front door or if you're so nieve that you don't even know if your local PD scrambles their radio signals or if you think programming this unit is more difficult than dialing a cellphone or if you're so stuck on yourself that you can't have a miniature Nascar logo on your scanner (which, by the way, is in every picture ever produce of this unit), then this unit is NOT the one for you! (I believe they still make play-doh.) My guess is your cousin and your wife are one in the same. But if you want a quality product that you'll be happy you bought, this IS for you. Once you take it out of the box, just go to [...] and click on your state and city and you'll have all the frequencies you need. Experiment with different frequencies, as well. Enjoy!

  • Awsome!
    By A26J7O1M7LUVWP on 2007-05-07
I bought this scanner without knwoing anything about it, and got a really nice surprise. It was all that I expected. The main use I give to it is monitoring aviation frequiencies and it does this job wonderfully. In case you want extra range, you can attach an external antenna to it, giving it a wide spectrum of use.

  • GREAT SCANNER

  • Will not keep a charge/goes through batteries
    By A2P9AVGQ5M6PM on 2006-09-22
This is a great scanner, easy to program and operate. The only draw back I see is, it will only run for an hour or so on batteries. It is a great scanner if you are going to have it plugged in all the time.

  • Excellent scanner
    By A15ORR163XGXA4 on 2007-01-09
I have owned this scanner for over two months. It's sensitivity, scanning speed and clarity are outstanding. I have dropped this scanner many times on concrete and other hard surfaces thinking it is now broken....it was sill perfect. I recommended this scanner to my friends who have now purchased one for themslves. Everyone is impressed.
I would recommend MAHA 2700 maHr rechargable batteries for the best performance and dependability.
I have no complaints about this scanner.
Uniden now has a carrying case for this scanner which I would also recommend.

  • Great Scanner

This is a great scanner for going to nascar races. Very easy to use(once you read the directions) and does great at the races! Go Jr!

  • Easy to use
    By A157B05SYREXAS on 2006-03-16
Bought a Uniden 100-channel portable scanner. It works great and is easy to use and program. Price was lowest on the web.

  • Not a bad scanner for the price
    By A2ZOHQWDD366F9 on 2007-01-09
I bought this to replace an 10-year old 100 channel Uniden Handheld.
My old one was great, but contacts and connections were starting to go bad.

For the price, this is a really great unit. I don't think you can find a better 100 channel scanner for under $100USD.

My only complaint is the small keypad, hence it makes programming tedius. Even a simple "lock out" involves a function key, then another key. Most won't need to re-program them very often and you can turn banks on and off by simply pressing the corresponding number.

It uses the same NiMh AA batteries that came with my digital camera, so I didn't have to buy a new set for the scanner. They charge right in the unit with the included AC adapter.

  • Great Scanner
    By A21RWUOCMA7HC7 on 2007-03-08
The Bearcat BC72XLT arrived promptly. It is easy to use and the reception is really great except my local police have moved to much higher UHF so I cant get those.

  • Great little scanner!
    By A1TB2SEYGZ3L0Z on 2007-07-20
I bought this scanner right after my husband became a deputy sheriff so I could keep up with what's going while he's on duty. I also like it for the weather band it has. I work swing shift & have to travel some at night, so it's a handy to have around. It's small enough to carry with you anywhere & is really easy to program. It can be programmed to pick up just about anything you'd like to listen to. I'm not sure what the range is, but it suits my needs really well. The price is good, too. Great little scanner!

Very hard to set up and I would not recommend this unit.It works good at times. Some times it has bad reception.

  • Does't pick up squat
    By A20GGP8NBD6JR7 on 2008-06-18
I am a firefighter and bought this scanner to listen to other stations. The scanner never picks up any chatter on any of the setting i.e. police, air, fire or marine. The other day I received a fire call, my scanner was sitting right next to my pager and didn't pick up the call. The scan mode stops on blank channels all the time no matter where I have the squelch set. I am very disappointed in this scanner.

  • The best scaner

  • Bearcat BC72XLT review
    By AUZZF76QK0IIY on 2007-01-18
    Nice compact design. Clear display.
Not teh easiest to program local address's in, but after taking some time to scan and find them, they are in now.
A lot of feature over kill. Some that most people would never use.
But a GREAT deal for the money.

Instructions where confusing. The trouble shooting page is worthless. I ended with finding a link to all my local Department with Itunes.

  • Not a bad scanner for the price
    By A3LUU69FREFCOC on 2008-07-01
I researched this Uniden BC72XLT before I purchased it. I read all of the reviews. I was worried about buying it when I read some of them. I bought it anyway and am glad that I did. It is easy to program and compact in size. I have had no problem with it picking up stations, even 15 to 20 miles away. I use it for police, fire and railroad mostly and am very pleased with it. For the folks who complain that it will not pick up police and fire, it is probably because the signals in their area are trunked and you need a special scanner to listen to that.

I am disappointed with the fact that it eats batteries. I use the land charger at home and purchased a 12 volt charger when using it in the car. Radio Shack handled this scanner sold under their name for a few years. It sold for about $79.00 about the same as this one. Today their scanners sell for a lot more and have less features than this one. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a pocket scanner and don't want to invest a lot of money in one.
