Smart cord is smart idea By AT5IUA1A1I92B on 2005-08-26
If you've placed your Passport in the proper location on the windshield, the mute buttom is out of reach. Put the Smart Cord control in reach of the steering wheel and you're good to go. A must have.
Excellent Accessory for the Passport 8500 X50 By A500C670MUT1M on 2007-01-22
I bought this accessory to use with my Escort Passport 8500 X50 radar/laser detector. It allows you to hardwire the power for your detector to the vehicle's fuse box so you don't have a power cord dangling down from the dash and plugged into a cigarette lighter socket. It also provides the same SmartCord remote control module that is on the Passport's included cigarette lighter socket power cord. The remote module has a power LED, an alert LED that flashes when the detector picks up a radar or laser signal, and a mute button. You can mount this module in a convenient location in your vehicle so you can easily mute the detector when it gets a false alert. It also provides you a concealed visual alert so that if you put the detector into "dark mode" (so that others around you can't see you have a detector when driving at night) you will still have a visual alert.
A reluctant 3 stars By A1VS1LL905P5L5 on 2006-12-31
Ok it does what it is supposed to do. It's a wire, nothing to get excited about. It seems to me that $30 for a wire is a little, no a lot, excessive. For the price of the escort, especially the "blue LED" model, this wire should be included as standard installation and should be in the escort box as standard. It works as described, but that's like praising an extension cord because when you plug the lamp in, the bulb lights up. Unless you need a hard wired setup just use the coiled lighter plug. That way you'll disconnect the thing after you park and hopefully take it with you to avoid vandals smashing and grabbing.
Easy as pie By A3IMJUJKP112CG on 2006-03-02
I used this kit to wire my detector directly into my car so I didn't have a wire going from my cigarette lighter up to my windshield. I didn't want to loose the external mute button, so this was a great product.
must have accessory for 8500 By A120AK3F0APOQK on 2007-01-10
I wish I would have purchased this 6 years ago when I bought my Escort 8500. Very, very easy to install and I now have my radar wires hidden and the radar unit above my mirror where it works much better.
- Does what it's supposed to
     By A2UY1E8I8ICVR3 on 2008-02-29
This was the easiest thing I've wired in my car - pretty much plug and play. You just need to find a +12 accessory wire and snap it on with the supplied clamp. It works exactly as the coiled lighter one does, but can be better concealed.
$30 for a wire is pretty ridiculous, and the same thing can be done with a phone wire for less than $5, but it's a quality product.
- An awesome solution to the stock problem

If you want to use your Escort in multiple cars this is the way to go. Not only does it allow you to hardwire your passport but it frees up the wires from the factory if you want to use in another vehicle.
- Another use for this product

I bought two of these to add radar detectors to my motorcycles. I didn't like the idea of the coiled power cord and with the detector mounted on the RH handlebar, it was not in my direct line of sight. This unit is made for automobiles but the premise is exactly the same. Mount the unit on the dash directly in front of you & the detector can be mounted whereever it is the most efficient. No coiled power cords to dangle about.
I did have to shorten the cord to the unit and put a new RJ11 plug on it, but that is a simple task. There are several alternatives for motorcycles to make the alert warning more visible. All are much more expensive and some are downright inconvenient to use. This is a simple, elegant solution that works very well. Just unplug the unit & change to another bike or your car. The adapter stays on the vehicle & the cord can be safely tucked out of the way.
- Way Too Long To Arrive After Purchase
     By A2JIMEMWTEPS2B on 2007-09-24
I purchased this iteam at the same time as my Escort 9500. It has been 10 days since I ordered the Direct Wire. I recieved my 9500 in three days and the Direct Wire still has not shipped yet. I found it cheaper from another distributor on Amazon. I would not buy from this distributor if you want your iteam on time.
- SmartCord

This is a quick and easy way to hard wire your Escort to keep wires hidden. The only thing you need to know is which wire to attach the clamp to in order to allow the detector to turn off when the car is off.
