  • Good choice - Does not require included CD on newer Win 2000 or XP

    By ASXDRKXJPRVUA on 2005-11-20
From appearances and description, this appears to be identical to my SDDR-92 (no A15) except for the shape of the button.

This SanDisk is an excellent unit - compact and reasonably slim, with a detachable USB cord. It is perfect for carrying in a pocket of your laptop case (unlike my Dazzle which is fine for a desk top, but awkwardly shaped for compact storage).

The unit is reliable and fast, and, unlike the 8-in-1 or 12-in-1 units which use up four hard-drive letters, this unit only uses one hard-drive letter. It supports reading, writing, deleting, etc., and works with either USB 2.0 or USB 1.1.

If you do not care about the button software, this unit installs plug-n-play, without needing a driver CD (at least on Win 2000 and XP). It simply appears as a removable hard-drive letter in Explorer.

I did not install the button software because I am not a fan having extra transfer mechanisms and photo organizers on my computer. I would rather be in full, manual control of how and when things happen, and where files are put.

I think that this is a 5-star unit, but I downgrade my own unit to 4 1/2 stars because of its overzealous packaging and arrogant installation instructions. In both the instructions, and on a sticky label on the unit (which I still have not been able to fully remove), it proclaims that you MUST install the button software before connecting the unit. I ignored that warning, and the unit worked fine without any installation needed.

One of the important requirements in a card reader is portability. Since not everyone takes kindly to your installing software on their computer, the card must be able to work just by plugging it into the USB port. The SanDisk SDDR-92 meets this requirement, although it proclaims not to.

This is a good choice for a CompactFlash Reader/Writer.

  • Wish it Connected Directly

    By A3DQWFWINN3V5A on 2006-06-10
This SanDisk CF Type I/II ImageMate USB 2.0 Reader/Writer is a neat little device. I just pull the Compact Flash card out of my camera, stick it in the ImageMate, plug the USB cable in and grab my pictures without having to mess with a camera/computer transfer or worry about draining the camera's battery. I'm running XP SP2 and didn't need to install a thing. I just plugged it into the USB port and XP found and recognized it. The only reason for giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I wish it plugged directly into the USB port itself (like the Simple Tech BONZAI USB 2.0 CARD READER -- though that uses SD/MMC cards instead of CF) instead of having to use the separate (included) USB cable.

  • Works great!!

    By A3R24Z18JA51L7 on 2006-09-16
I bought this becuase downloading pictures from my Digital Rebel XT Camera took forever and a day to complete. Using this drive only took about a minute to download 2 Gigs of pictures!

You don't need the CD if you have windows XP.

  • Great reader

    By A3H6ZRW4LNG4DY on 2006-05-13
I spent $10 on a MediaGrear keychain CF card reader first. That reader is usable, but it is hard to pull my CF card out. I think that reader's pins are very likely to damage my CF cards if I insert and pull my cards very frequently. Then I decide to get this brand-name reader, with $20 at bestbuy (not a very good price). And I am very satisfied with the product. When you insert your card into the reader, it is not like a floppy which goes all into the reader. Just half of the card is inside the reader. So I don't need to pull it very hard when I want to get the card out, it comes out smoothly and I no longer worry about damaging my card. When I plug the reader into my computer, it works immediately, no need to install any driver if you don't need to use that transfer button.

  • Fast, but mine has errors downloading.

    By A1MQK0CTHTL8GJ on 2007-09-18
I wanted a faster CF card reader, so I got this. First the software is not compatible with Vista. Contacted Sandisk and they said no problem, just use it without the "button" software. I thought fine, I'd rather not load software anyway. I tried downloading my RAW and JPEG files, and it stops with errors. My other CF card readers work fine. (I bought this through Amazon's seller "Endless Variety", and it seems they don't reply to your email). I love Sandisk's CF cards, I have 10 of them from 1GB to 4GB, so I was disappointed. To be fair, it is probably just a defective unit.

  • Not iPod Photo Compatible
    By A2FJ46RDRKWTTI on 2006-03-24
This device is a good USB2 reader, light and compact, but is not a supported device for direct reading to an iPod.... that's why I got it... just assumed it would be.

  • SanDisk Reader/Writer
    By A2Z1QQT1XR35FU on 2006-08-09
This products works very well and just as advertised. I have downloaded >6GB of slides since my purchase -- all flawlessly. I would recommend this product highly.

  • Solid performer
    By AVB9HXB7I6RPP on 2007-01-07
This device has worked very effectively. I use a MAC, so the one-button transfer does not function. But the reader is immediately recognized by my MAC and it's an easy drag and copy of my photos to my hard drive. No complaints, would buy it again.

  • Works as advertised
    By AZ9V5DKCI3334 on 2007-01-18
This item works as advertised and I have not encountered any problems on it so far. I did not have to use the accompanying cd-rom as I am using it on a Mac, and it just comes up as an untitled drive.

  • bulky but does the job
    By AGLTPRGOGJ4IO on 2006-07-18
i have a card reader slot in my computer, but i purchased this to keep in my camera bag just in case i want to download to a computer that doesn't. it works great, but my only complaint is that it's a little bulky. other than that it's a great card reader.

  • Card Reader
    By A2EWT5XA31I2SD on 2006-08-07
Works well with or without software installed. Good for home use and school or traveling.

  • Works great!
    By AU5U16YWAIYZP on 2007-07-12
Works great on my Windows XP GX620 Dell, 24" iMAC running MAC OS-X and Unix computers.

    Fast downloads and reliable.

  • Does the job
    By A2N2FJ2WS0MWTV on 2007-08-01
Only echoing other reviewers - this is a small, quick piece of gear. Have Vista Home Premium so I plugged the unit in, let Vista find a driver and viola! works like a champ. Don't understand the fascination with the button; I use Windows Explorer to copy and paste onto my hard drive.

Would recommend this in a heartbeat!

  • Great Product
    By AWPV532K5V6YJ on 2007-11-05
I've had this CF Reader for almost a year and it's worked flawlessly. Does what its supposed to and the auto-sync feature works with every digital photo application I've come across, including iPhoto, Aperture, and Lightroom. I'll take it with me on trips/vacations so that I can immediately upload and delete the images from my CF card, leaving me with an empty card to work with the next day.

  • This product is a time bomb
    By ANBJ6T65F2XN9 on 2008-01-08
I was initially happy with this reader - it worked well for a year plus change. Until recently.

Worrisome: it started making a high-pitched sound when plugged in.

Bad: it stopped reading some (but not all) of my CF cards.

Worse: sometimes it would read files from the CF card, but the files would be corrupted when they got to my computer.

Totally unacceptable: sometimes, it would corrupt files on the CF card, just by trying to read them! This means that I now have images that were destroyed by this reader, just from trying to download them off of the card.

I'd recommend staying far, far away from this product.

  • Lightening Fast!!
    By A2FJ1RXEV427S8 on 2007-08-02
Faster than a speeding bullet.....!! After purchasing this USB reader, and seeing how fast my digital pictures download, I realize how many hours of my life were lost staring into space with the old cardreader. I use 2gig cards and take lots of photos, and this handles the downloads to my computer with ease. If there are better and faster card readers out there, it doesn't matter to me, this is FAST! It installed quickly and easily on my Dell PC, windows XP, and works perfectly. It is also small and easy to take with me along with my laptop.

  • Works greate with Windows (tm) alternatives
    By A2SBG0KHJMRTN9 on 2008-04-19
I don't run Windows on any of my computers.

    I run FreeBSD and Linux.

My daughter has a digital camera that uses a Compact Flash card. I went out to the local mega-variety store and picked up one of them mass storage device gizmos that will read every storage card yet invented. It was expensive and didn't work on my stuff. I don't know how they run on Windows. Never tried it.

But I have grown to appreciate devices that do one thing and do it well - over those all-purpose do-everything devices that don't do any of them very well.

This device does the job like a champ and dependably. The little button on the front doesn't do anything on my equipment; but even if it did I wouldn't use it.

I highly recommend this device for reading Compact Flash - especially if you run Linux or something non-Windows.

  • what more can you ask for?
    By AVJPUGJSZRWV9 on 2006-11-05
I use this little device with my Apple Powerbook to transfer photos taken with Canon digital cameras.

Mac OS X recognizes the unit with no additional drivers required, and it works great. Much more convenient than attaching the camera itself to the computer every time.

  • Does what it is supposed to do.
    By A1ELWYBFHV4UTQ on 2006-11-13
It is a compact flash reader/writer and it does exactly that. So I am happy with it.

  • Fast, small, but don't drop it!
    By A14XTALQWX5R6H on 2006-12-28
I have had two of these CF readers in the last few months. My original one died only a few days after purchasing it when it was bumped off of a chair onto a hard tile floor (about a 2 feet drop) with a CF card in it. The fall broke the CF socket loose from the circuit board and the reader no longer worked.

I liked the size and weight of the unit a lot (it is very compact and light weight) and it's much faster than downloading from my Canon EOS 10D which doesn't have USB 2.0, so I am giving it another shot. This time I'll be more careful with it.

For the price, I think this is a great CF reader if you take care of it.

  • Very Good

Very useful device for PCs that dont have CF Type readers on them.

  • SanDisk CF Type I/II ImageMate USB 2.0 Reader/Writer (Model SDDR-92-A15)
    By A2IL8A5H1EM9M on 2007-03-23
Works great. I've used 4gb compact flash cards so far with no problems.

  • Memory Transfer Made Easy!!!
    By AGZIVYQ3A2BHK on 2007-05-19
I couldn't be more satisfied with this product. It's easy to install and even easier to use. If you have even the slightest clue how to use a computer, which I'm guessing you do if you're reading this, then you'll have no problem with this card reader. If you only need a Compact Flash reader, definitely get this one!

  • Works like a charm. Super fast image transfer
    By A3NYY0MCW3F36 on 2007-09-10
Having a Cf USB 2.0 card reader made life much more simpler than transfering images via the Camera.
There are 2 big advantages in buying one.
    1) It is powered by your Computer via a USB cable and does not require you to upload via your camera, so you can save your camera's batteries.
    2) It transfers images from the CF to the PC at a significantly faster rate than the camera. Without keeping track of time I would say it is 2/3 rds quicker with a CF reader than using a conventional usb transfer via the camera.
My only regret is that I did not buy this product sooner.

  • No fuss CF reader/writer
    By A2XDO6AA46CU4V on 2008-04-21
This CF reader/writer does just that with no fuss, no software, just plug and go. Works very well. I bought two and one of them had a bad USB cable. Since I have a drawer full of USB cables this was no problem, but it may be for you.

  • does its job well
    By ABN9ZKY8PA3IH on 2008-06-20
It reader/writer is easy and intuitive to use, decent transfer speed, and it does what it's supposed to do.

  • SanDisk CF reader works fine for me.
    By A1UKK8KPG7UN4U on 2008-08-13
I use this card reader to take pictures off cards from Canon Digital SLR cameras. Works great, fast enough for me. I go between an XP desktop and a Vista laptop and it is seamless on both. That feature (XP or Vista) was what I was looking for so that is important to me. I don't use the feature of the push button so I can't really comment on that.
    I like this card reader!

  • La Excelencia SanDisk
    By A2J12DAAK9PW4H on 2007-08-26

  • Not what it advertised
    By A1MGBFX03BE7Q8 on 2007-09-10
I bought this because it stated it would accommodate "SD" memory cards. It turned out that it did not.

  • Really Great... FAST transfer
    By A3G69XPLXXM91O on 2007-10-10
This is the BEST CF card reader I've ever had... (my 4th).... It's super fast and it de-mounts really quickly too... No complaints whatsoever... they should make it in different colors!
