Griffin Technology 4039-EJAM EarJam Earbud Sound Enhancing Coversx$2.98

(183 reviews)

Best Price: $2.98

Griffin EarJams revolutionize the iPod earbud by providing a more custom fit to your ears. The result is greater comfort, improved sound isolation from external noise, superior sound quality and volume. EarJams easily snap onto your Apple earbuds. Each set of EarJams comes with three sizes of earpads to give you a snug and comfortable fit.

The distinctive white ear buds that come with 3G and 4G iPods meet the audio needs of many listeners, but some don't like the fit, and still others think the buds' sound is too tinny and weak. Griffin addresses these concerns with its EarJams, a pair of snap-on plastic ear funnels designed to boost and improve the iPod's audio performance. The Jams attach directly to the ear buds and use their cone shape to focus the sound within the ear. The Jams also come with three pairs of soft rubber ear pads--large, medium, and small, depending on the size of your ear canal--and a protective carrying case. It's important to note that the EarJams don't fit the buds that came with 1G and 2G iPods.

EarJams come with included carrying case to protect your spare earpads and your Earbuds.
Features and Performance
Every music fan has a different opinion on what constitutes quality sound. To some, it's expressive, clear high ranges, while others prefer big, booming bass. If you consider yourself a bass believer, the EarJams are right up your alley. The funnels create much deeper tones, turning formerly bright-sounding songs into thumping affairs. The Jams also boost the volume by around 15 to 25 percent, pleasing listeners who think the traditional iPod ear buds are too slight.

The real question, though, is whether this bass monsoon actually improves the music. And the answer, again, is in the ear of the beholder. There's no question that the Jams sacrifice the high- and mid-range frequencies to improve the low-end performance. A once crisp-sounding acoustic guitar sounds a bit muddled through the Jams, while vocals that formerly soared end up stooping instead. On the other hand, the Jams can also take a flat-sounding hip-hop track and give it some serious punch. Listeners may be best served by using the EarJams on an album-by-album basis, as some songs are clearly improved by the added wallop, while others just create a thud.

One huge area of improvement is the way the EarJams fit within the ears. Once listeners determine which ear pads fit the best, the Jams nestle securely within the ear canals and won't come out until pulled. Contrast that with the default ear buds, which sit loosely in the ear and can easily tumble out while jogging or walking, or even during a quick turn of the head. The pads are also washable in case they get a bit waxy.

A final bonus comes in the form of the zippered carrying case, which holds the ear buds, EarJams, and all of the pads in its padded pouch. The main compartment opens to reveal two mesh pockets and a third zippered pocket. --Rivers Janssen

Pros

  • Significantly boosts the bass performance of your iPod
  • Increases volume output of ear buds
  • Multiple sizes of ear pads ensure comfortable, secure fit
  • Handy carrying case protects buds and EarJams

Cons

  • High- and mid-range frequencies don't sound as good

Customer Reviews

  • Great features, except for the overall sound.

    By ABOTZN3A7OKMU on 2005-06-10
These may be worth the Amazon sale price of about $7.00 at the time of this review, but they are certainly not worth the full $14.00 or higher elsewhere.

The Amazon review is quite accurate:

+ The bass was most definitely increased.
+ The volume was increased to the point where I only had to play songs at 1/2 or less the volume to match my normal listening levels.
+ The ear buds stay in ears much more securely than the headphones without them, when you have the right-sized inserts installed.
+ The little case is very convenient. Though tight, I was able to fit my USB cable and my original ear buds in it. I may throw out the EarJams but keep the little case.

    - I found that the high and mid-range frequencies not only didn't sound as good, they were dulled out. To me, they didn't sound good at all: to the point where I do not plan to use the EarJams.

However, after trying the ear buds with and without the EarJams repeatedly, I'm now convinced that a higher quality set of headphones would be a great improvement over both.

  • great attachment for workouts

    By AU4H7OG5UFDWO on 2005-07-04
I find that the ipod earbuds are particularly unstable during a long walk/run or other workout. The griffin earjam earbuds make the ipod phones much more comfortable and less likely to fall out. I can even walk while talking on my cell with one ear phone hanging and the other will remain snuggly in place. The enhanced volume also helps when walking outside in a noisy area. You can still hear enough outside noise to be safe but it no longer overpowers the ipod sound. Is there some sacrifice of quality? Perhaps, but I haven't noticed a big difference and the advantages more than make up for any minimal quality loss. The price also makes it easy to give it a try.

  • Dangerous Garbage

    By A27D8ADDYNY5N8 on 2006-08-03
I'm not a fan of Griffin's products. As a general rule, they suck. See my other reviews of Griffin products and I'll tell you why. I don't buy their stuff anymore, but sometimes I receive their junk as gifts. This one struck a nerve because I'm a sensory scientist and I know something about the dangers of poor quality audio equipment.

This has got to be one of the dumbest products ever created by Griffin. Maybe you'll be happy with the sound quality and the comfort level. The fact that many people are not happy with these things is well documented in other reviews.

The key issue is hearing loss. If you aren't concerned about this, then you qualify for a Darwin award. Earbuds by themselves are high-risk items. They are MUCH more dangerous than normal headphones because they provide high amplitude sound and they block the ear canal. Even without this stupid EarJam product, earbuds boost the signal as much as six to nine decibels (about the sound of a vaccum cleaner and a motorcycle). Often, the listener is not aware of the damage that is being caused. Normally, we hear distortion at high volumes, so we don't crank it up. With earbuds, you can crank up the volume and you don't perceive it as being all that loud... which is a recipe for disaster. Hearing doesn't have very sensitive pain receptors. By the time you feel pain, it is too late--you are already doing damage. The hearing loss is gradual, so you aren't aware of it until it is too late.

If covering the ear canal with an earbud isn't wise, then jamming it closed with the EarJam is the height of stupidity. Trapping sound pressure waves in the ear adds to the risk.

Don't believe me? Do an internet search for "earbuds" and "Dean Garstecki" of Northwestern University, or Robert Sweetow of UCSF.

I'd love to hear from an audiologist, sensory scientist, or medical person who disputes what I've just said. Lawyers and marketing people don't count. Can Griffin find a hack to say otherwise? Probably not. They'd be crushed by facts. The amazing thing is that Earbud manufacturers are quite aware of the issues, and the warnings they offer are more and more geared toward limiting liability.

Well maybe you don't like what you are hearing from me, but I hope that you don't damage your ears further. Truly dense people may want to consider learning sign language.

If you want to play it as safe as possible while listening to headphones, get noise canceling headphones that reduce the ambient noise and thus reduce the need to crank up the music. They offer better sound quality anyway. But all headphones carry risks. Pete Townshend of the Who (a band that your grandparents listened to) blames headphones on his hearing loss, and the science tends to back him up.

  • EarJams are a solid purchase

    By A39BW5G99RCV22 on 2005-01-25
Looking for noise canceling headphones for my iPod, I purchased the $100 Shure E2 set from the Apple Store. While they did cancel exterior noise to some extent, they were almost too effective.

They blocked sound so well that when in motion-outdoors specifically-I could hear the movement of my body which was very distracting. I also didn't appreciate the "over the ear" design that wrapped around to the back of the neck. These are obviously designed for in studio use.

I suppose that I felt a tinge of guilt purchasing $100 headphones as well!

So, I returned them and got the $15 EarJams. And, surprisingly, the EarJams work just as well in the "noise canceling" department. They are also comfortable and retain the cool Apple white look. A good balance of price and functionality. Recommended.

  • Depend on the music

    By A3AEQVHYRTKETU on 2005-04-11
This review is for the Grifin inear adaptor for ipod earbuds. First off, I have to say this is a very clever designed product. The principle is simple, it basically covers the orginal ipod earbud and form an internal spectrum to move more air out of a tiny hole. The result? sarcrified sound quality for a strong base boost. People say it's too muddy and can't hear any real music, some say it's the most wonderful product you can get. My opinion? It really depends on the music you are listening to. For instance, if you are listening to Rap or hip hop which the lows really matter and the original ipod really lacks, this would be a good option; on the other hand, if you are into some acustic rock or live concert, where the midrange and highs are very important, the earjams probably wouldn't fit you well. As for comfort and noise cancelling, this is a pretty good alternative to some higher end noise cancelling earbud/phones. I think most of you would agree with me that after a long time the hard ipod orginal earbud will start to hurt the ears, the earjam instead of using your ear as a holder, it plugs into your ear canal, so sometimes it will slip out. And the earjam comes in three sized forms so it will fit most of the ear shapes out there. and the case is awesome! I put my ipod earbud in it while travilling and i dont' want it to get tangled up.

The bottom line? Simple! Since this is only an addon, take it off when you need to, and put it back on when you are in the mood for some bass pumping action. It claps on and off as easy as you put the earbud in your ear. So if you do have a deeper pocket, go for higher end earbuds. But if you are like me who spend most of the lifesavings on the ipod, this would be an ideal upgrade for different styles of music. For less than 10 bux, even the case is worth it.

  • Just fine.
    By A3L2LAP26GCFF3 on 2005-06-03
They transform Apple's earbuds into sounding much fuller, are very comfortable, are thrifty, and have never fallen out of my ears, even when exercising. And I pride myself on the averageness of my ear size.

  • Not that bad
    By A296KTBFUW5GUX on 2005-01-11
These snap-on earphone enhancers from Griffin do a decent job overall. They boost bass response if that's what you're looking for in regards to the sound. They also increase the overall sound output. They do not isolate your listening experience from outside noise, but to get that sort of effect you need high-end headphones anyway. I'm not sure if they're worth the fifteen dollars that I paid, but it's an easy way to enhance your basic Apple earphones.

  • Poor Sound Quality - Very Disappointing
    By A2DLEAP4FPI6H6 on 2005-02-03
I had high hopes for the Griffin EarJams for my iPod. If you're like me, those little foam earbud covers that come with the iPod keep falling off and getting lost. So with high hopes, I layed out the cash for the EarJams thinking these will be comfortable, washable, and increase the bass and volume. Cool! Oh yes, they increase the bass to the point that after about 10 minutes your ears can't take it anymore. And I'm a bass player, so I really like bass. The EarJams don't just increase the bass though, they make the music sound like it's coming out of a cave, which means that the highs are buried and the whole mix is very boomy; painfully boomy. Also, the ear pieces are not more comfortable. There are three sizes and none of them feel good in my ears. The only really cool thing is the carrying case which is a nice size for storing the earbuds. The EarJams, however, are awful. Don't waste your money.

  • Earjams are not a replacement for Ear Buds
    By A28L3FOGQ1TY7M on 2005-02-05
For those of you who are quick on the "1-click" like I am, be aware that that these are snap-ons for your current pair of iPod Ear Buds. I bought them thinking that they came with as a replacement. That's definitely my fault and not the manufacturers, but it is disappointing when they arrive and you find that you still need to buy a replacement for your broken Ear Buds.

After snapping them on to a working pair, I found that they do increase the bass and volume. However, this appears to be at the cost of the other frequencies. I tried several EQ settings on the iPod to find one that provided some high frequency treble, but it's definitely not as good as a full range of sound. I'm also not impressed with the design since you could easily lose one of the snap-ons in the bottom of your backpack. Hence, the cool carrying case?

All in all, not bad for $15, but still disappointing.

  • These sound like crap - Don't even bother
    By A3LQJ0PMEEY2UL on 2005-10-30
Yes, they increase the bass, but in the process completely cuts out all high frequency detail, sacrificing any semblance of clarity.

If you are interested in real in-ear plugs, there are plenty out there to choose from. I thought I'd try the cheap route, but I just wasted money, as these are going right in the trash.

  • A big disappointmernt
    By A15DDUBF4GY0VE on 2005-11-23
Griffin generally makes very high quality items for the iPod. This is not one of those items. On the plus side, they do stay in my ears much better than the Apple iPod earbuds. That is the ONLY plus side. They sound AWFUL! Volume and bass is indeed increased -- it turns all sounds into a loud, muddy mush. I threw them away after about ten minutes of painful testing. Now that they've dropped the price to practically nothing, that might be a clue about what they're worth. Just go buy a better pair of earbuds and don't waste your money on these.

  • Exceeded expectations!
    By A37LBCQZ6DNBML on 2005-04-26
When I got my iPod for my birthday, I was a little put off when I noticed that the earbuds included were the wrong shape for my ears; I walk home from school down a hill through the woods, so they would fall out every few seconds. :-( I needed a solution that wouldn't cost more than my allowance and birthday money could handle, so I decided to try these out. After reading a lot of other reviews, I was worried that they would make my music horrible and mucky, but when I fitted the EarJams into my ears and played some of my music I was very impressed. They don't alter the treble quality enough for me to notice or care, and the bass gets a really enjoyable boost. It also amplifies the earbuds so that 50% volume is about the loudest I would be able to listen to comfortably--VERY good for me, considering how embarrassing it is to be sitting in English class when you realize everyone else can hear your music blasting!

These are a purchase you really shouldn't pass up, especially if your ears are messed-up like mine and can't handle earbuds. Even if you were blessed with normal ears, heh heh, I would still recommend this product because of the great improvement in sound quality and volume.

  • I Love Them!
    By A3TVVGOQA63BPC on 2005-05-28
They perform exactly as I had hoped... they help keep the iPod earbuds securely in my ear. Speaking as one who isn't really into the acoustics end of it (I just want to listen to my music without static), these earjams offered a noticeable improvement in sound quality over the included iPod earbuds.

I just wish that after the initial purchase, there was an option to purchase additional ear pads only, in specific sizes (as I use the small set and have lost one of those already). I guess I'll just have to spring for a new set.

  • They stay put!!!
    By A2HI97TI7CPOH0 on 2005-06-17
I was really happy beacuse they actually make those pesky headphones stay put. I always had to spend half of my workout trying to keep them in my ears. I was just pleased because they stay put now. They do alter the sound a bit but lets face it, the ipod headphones are not a top of the line set. They sound ok. I didn't think the earbuds made them sound any worse. Plus the sound boost was a plus because I could actually hear my music with a bunch of people in the gym. When you consider the price of these you just can't go wrong.

  • Buy them if you enjoy pain.
    By A2KPKZTC3C6NS6 on 2005-05-19
"Disappointed" isn't a good word to describe my feelings about this purchase. I think a better term would be "tormented". If you look at these closely, you'll notice the serrated edges which attach to the ear buds. This is a grievous design flaw. These things hurt. I'm average-sized, with average-sized ears. After about ten minutes of wear, the serrated edges slowly begin sinking into the tender flesh of my ears. It doesn't matter how good the music is, I'm unable to ignore the pain.

Admittedly, there is a modest improvement in the sound quality (compared to the stock iPod headphones) when using these, but it doesn't justify the extreme discomfort they cause. Do yourself a favor and get actual earbud headphones. They'll fit (drastically) better, sound better, and the difference in comfort is the difference between a featherbed and a bed of (sparsely distributed) nails. If you've already purchased an iPod, you've spent a lot of money on a music listening device. Don't blow the listening experience by buying cheap serrated headphone covers that cause you pain.

  • Enhanced bass? Try muffled. Like listening thru JAM!!
    By A2AB2QJ0XQII3C on 2005-06-07
Still looking for the ideal pair. The stock ipod earbuds sound great but aren't comfortable and fall out too easy. My Sennheisers sound even better but don't fit. Tried these and not only do they fall out with the most trivial head motion (don't try bopping your head to the beat of the music) the sound quality is TERRIBLE (as I noted above, I guess the name earJAM refers to the sound). It's frustrating 'cause they LOOK like they should be great.

I just sat through size swaps, position adjustments, listened to different music styles, compared with headphones, my other earbuds, and compared the sound to the cd played thru room speakers, etc. These, unfortunately, are the worst of all options.

    I like the case!

  • I love them!
    By A6F4N3NI2800V on 2005-03-31
I purchased a set for myself and my son. We use them while skiing and don't experience the pain that the ear buds cause after a few minutes of use. We can ski all day without them falling out or hurting. I had to drop the volume down to about half of what it was set at before I had them. I can pick up all of the words and background sounds clearly. I just had a dental implant and used them to filter out the sound of the drill. I just bought my wife an iPod Shuffle and now have to buy another set as she won't let me have mine back.

  • They stay in your ears!
    By AA72VFJ3GJOV on 2005-04-27
I had a terrible time keeping the earbud in my ear until I got these. They also work well to direct the sound into your ear so that you don't need to use as much volume to get excellent sound. Griffin also supplies a nice little case to hold you ear jams and headset. If you don't like things in your ears, you should get a "muff" type headphone. I love these little guys!

  • Disappointed
    By A2ZXTLFMARD6E6 on 2005-05-12
Don't buy them , unless you have extra large sized ears. They're too heavy and too large. The smallest rubber ear pads still won't fit comfortably in my ears.

I use my ipod primarily when walking several times a week. They won't fit snugly and are constantly falling out and have started to irritate my ears from the constant reinsertions.

I've stopped using them and will buy something else. Very disappointed.

  • Not worth a dime
    By A7NOL7YQYO21G on 2005-06-21
I bought these because my iPod earphones don't stay in during a workout.
Incredibly these fit even worse! (none of the 3 sizes of rubbery earpieces stay in).
And (as many of the reviews mention) they make the sound worse.
    What a piece of junk.

  • Exaggerated bass with a muffled background
    By A23MDG7EZN79CG on 2005-07-02
Even if you're into heavy bass, I don't recommend this product since it doesn't deliver it in a punchy accurate way, i.e it only delivers the lows leaving much to be desired even for a casual listener. But the worst point about this product is that it will actually worsen the midrange which makes up for most of the music in any genre (The sound is unclear due to resonance occuring in the listener's ear canal due to poor construction)

  • Not headphones, hurts to wear
    By A2XMQDAMCMYQ15 on 2005-09-14
This is only a plastic cover that goes over the earphones that come with the IPod. This makes them too big to go into your ear so they don't stay in, unless you force them, then they hurt like hell.

  • True to Amazon Editorial
    By A1G9N5Y3COXQA on 2005-10-30
I purchased these a bit tentatively when I saw that these earbuds were supposed to produce massive bass. When I first put these on, I admit, the bass was startling. But after listening to a couple tracks, I could admire the improved quality of the sound. I would say that at below $10 these earbuds get 5 stars. The only drawback is the bass, but with the small earbuds (which fit most people best) it is almost negligable. They also fit well in my ears (they don't fall out during moderate activity, such as running). Griffin has made a fine quality product, which at $5 is great value.

  • help for sore ears
    By A3A09PG5GIZJZ on 2005-03-05
The ipod earbuds really hurt my ears after just a few minutes-they are just too big for me. The EarJams make a huge difference and I'm happy with them. They stay snug in my ears and the soft silicone is much more comfortable than the hard plastic ipod earbuds. Once in a while, one may fall out if I am trail running, but I can usually get it back in snugly and continue on. I recommend these to anyone with small ears. I'm no audiophile, but the sound quality seems fine to me.

  • Great product
    By AXTJPZ6V16FIX on 2005-07-09
This product does just what it is supposed to. It keeps the earbuds in your ears, and improves the sound. Basically, it fixes the Apple earbuds so they don't constantly fall out. (Note to Apple: if your earbuds fit in the ears of humans, this product wouldn't exist.)

[Edit]After using these for over two years, I'm still very happy, but I do have one complaint. The rubber pieces that fit into your ears readily detach from the earbuds, making them prone to fall off if you stuff the earbuds into your pocket or bag. I glued mine on with a bit of rubber cement, and that helped tremendously. All the same, I believe Griffin should have firmly attached these.

A couple of notes: first, I had a concern that these would fit overly tightly into the ear canal. Not to worry. Despite the name, these don't actually "jam" into your ears. They fit quite comfortably. Secondly, I was worried that these would block out too much external sound, to the extent that I would hear my own footsteps, and the rustling of my clothes (I've read this as a complaint of other in-ear buds). Again, this proved to be no problem. EarJams block some external sound, but you can still hear what's going on around you, which for me is a good thing.

  • Pretty good, especially for the price
    By A11CERNGQYX3MJ on 2005-11-08
I didn't have a problem with the bass boost that others mentioned - these actually sound pretty good with my iPod Mini, even at loud levels during a workout. I did have a problem with the sizing - even the smallest buds still don't fit well into my ears, but these still fit a lot better than the earbud headphones the iPod comes with. For the price, definitely worth it.

  • Make those Apple earbuds [finally] usable!
    By A2JSKM60VTCNI on 2006-06-01
    It's about time!

For 2.5 years, my wife and I have often pondered how anyone can use the ridiculously uncomfortable earbuds included with iPods. Yes, they look terrific and likewise have a chic appeal. Reality, however, proves these as uncomfortable, bulky earphones better replaced by solid Sony in-ear offerings and/or high-end Shure, Bose and Senheiser product.

Echoing sentiments eschewed elsewhere in the product review, these covers are well worth the money. Do they increase bass/sound quality? Not at all. They simply funnel the sound down tighter enclosures, allowing better sound accuracy (versus significant leakage via the 'standard,' non EarJam option). As mentioned by other reviewers, they also fit snug in ears during workouts -- my wife digs 'em. Moreover, love the carrying case for storage purposes. Oh, to be hip AND functional!

A couple of suggestions: buy two sets of these. Lose one rubber piece, you're left mixing/matching with alternate sizes that don't fit.

Related, bonding craft glue to gently seal the rubber to the Earbud unit is a nice way to ensure the suckers stay on tight after significant use and/or stretch.

  • Overall: GREAT!
    By AT5NSJ24Y42XZ on 2005-07-08
This product isnt going to be the quality of the etys, so c'mon guys! The quality isnt great, but look at what you are getting? More bass, and more importantly, more comfort! I would DEF. recommend this product to anyone that finds Apple's earbuds uncomfortable.

  • simple and performs great
    By A3MZQLCG60SE42 on 2005-07-28
The earbuds are comfy and you just have to play around with it for a couple of seconds to get a perfect fit.

for this price who can complain?? I had the volume at almost 90% without the earjams and now they're at a comfortable 50%

Get some earjams if you have an ipod!

  • Great to adapt buds for SMALL ears
    By AE2YQ6DQ00ELP on 2005-09-26
I love these. If you have small ear canals, these are for you. The standard one-size-fits-all earbuds that come with the ipod are just too big to hold in my ears, especially for workouts. These are the perfect solution. They also come with three different earbud sizes to adapt properly to your ear canal size. Many other of my girlfriends are finding this a useful product too (we're petite in size-- under 5'3").
