JanSport Odyssey Daypackx
    (33 reviews)
Best Price: $125.00
Take it into the backcountry or haul all the school supplies you'll ever need, either way the JanSport Odyssey Backpack offers spacious organized storage and a comfortable suspension system for adventures of the wilderness or academic kind. The Odyssey is one of those backpacks that you can stuff with 25 pounds of gear or books without worrying about suffering from an achy back. AirLift shoulder straps made of a unique shock absorbing material distribute the weight evenly, and a tuck-away padded hip belt works in tandem with an internal frame sheet to share the load with the shoulders when necessary. For hikes or hot afternoons on campus, the JanSport Odyssey Backpack includes a reservoir-ready hydration sleeve so you can easily arrange for hands-free drinks on the go. Side compression straps keep the load from shifting when scrambling over rocks or quickly descending an uneven path, and reflective details add an element of safety if your usual route home involves a bike ride or roadside walk. The multi-use JanSport Odyssey 38 Technical Freedom daypack features comfortable S-curved Airlift shoulder straps and moisture-wicking Airvent mesh to keep you going all day long. It has a hydration sleeve with an exit for a drink tube and a toggle for hanging optional hydration reservoirs. The frame sheet and aluminum stay provide sophisticated suspension and support. Other features include a removable sternum strap, a V-Loft security pocket for quick access to your CD player and valuable items, mesh water bottle pockets, and a #10 main zipper with silent zipper pulls. It has a padded hipbelt that helps distribute weight proportionally throughout the body and tucks away behind the back when not needed. The ergodynamic, S-curved Airlift straps with Gelastic Gellycomb relieve stress from your shoulders, and are shaped to contour the natural shape of your upper torso. They disperse the weight across your back and increase air circulation. Specifications: - Capacity: 2350 cubic inches (38 liters)

Amazon.com Backpack Guide Finding the Right Backpack For extended trips into the backcountry, there's no getting around the fact that you'll have to carry life-sustaining supplies on your back. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a backpack: Internal vs. External Up until late 1970's, external frame packs--which consist of an exposed, lightweight metal frame attached to a fabric pack-bag--were the only thing going. In recent years, though, packs that place the support structure of the pack inside the pack, known as internal frame packs, have boomed in popularity. The good news about internal frame packs is that they hold the weight of your load close to your body, making it easier to maintain your balance on uneven terrain. Meanwhile, internals provide stiffness and support, but they are not completely rigid, which makes them more flexible when you're doing active sports. With the added flexibility comes a high degree of compressibility, meaning you can use the pack's compression straps to cinch down your load and keep items from shifting and throwing you off balance. Internals also sport slimmer shapes that allow for more arm movement in all directions--another big plus for off-trail bushwhackers, skiers and climbers. Last but not least, internal frame packs offer a greater range of adjustability in the shoulder harness and hip-belt than external frame packs. There are some negatives for internals. First, once packed, it can be difficult to grab needed items out of them quickly. And because internal frame packs consolidate the load into a single, body-hugging unit, proper packing is very important. To distribute the weight properly, you should pack your heaviest items close to your back and in the middle portion of the pack-bag. Plan on getting a sweaty back with an internal, too, given the fact that they are pressed right against you. Finally, internal frame packs are priced higher than external models. External frame packs are very good at focusing the weight of a load directly to the right place: your load-loving hips. While internals, when properly packed, do this effectively, too, you can always rest assured that an external will distribute the load evenly, no matter how unevenly packed it may be. Externals also offer easy access to your gear via multiple, easily-accessible compartments. Plus, because externals don't situate the load directly against your back, you'll enjoy far more air flow. Finally, if you're on a budget, or you're buying for a growing child, externals are more affordable. If you plan on hiking on easy to moderate trails and you don't need a lot of body movement, you'll probably be fine with an external. But because externals are so rigid and inflexible, challenging trails or any kind of off-trail pursuit can become painful and frustrating. Also know that your balance is far more compromised with an external frame pack during activities like stream crossings and hops through talus fields. Packs for Shorter Trips In addition to backpacks designed for overnight trips, rucksacks are great for day-trips, warm-weather one-nighters, single-day ski trips, or fast alpine assaults. Some rucksacks blur the line between backpack and rucksack with integrated internal supports and sophisticated hip belts and shoulder harnesses. Choose a pack in this category based on your intended use. Short day hikers don't need an internal frame, while climbers and skiers with heavier loads likely do. Sizes and Capacities Packs in the 3,000 cubic inches and lower category are good for day hikes or overnighters in warm weather with minimal gear. Packs in the 3,000 to 4,000 cubic inch range are good for one- or two-night trips in colder weather. If you're going to be out for up to three days, look for a pack in the sub-4,000 cubic inch range. Choose a pack with 5,000-6,000 cubic inches for week-long outings. And finally, for trips lasting a week or more, you'll need something in the 6,000-plus cubic inch category. Keep in mind, though, that bigger packs weigh more, and since every ounce counts, you'll want to choose a pack that offers just enough space for your outings and no more.

Great Day Trip Pack By A20FR4GDESILPA on 2008-02-18
I received this pack as a Christmas present in 2007. By mid-February 2008, I've already traveled to Denver, Hong Kong/Macau using this pack - living out of it daily, all day, for over two weeks in China.
This is a fantastic pack with heavy duty zippers.
There are pockets for almost everything you will carry: passport, wallet, cell phone, mp3 player, USB cables, sunscreen, sunglasses, chapstick, pens, pencils, PDA, fruit, candy, local maps, phrase book, camera, portable tripod, and water in the outside storage nets. Plenty of room for a laptop, umbrella, sweater, shell, and a light jacket when you don't know what the weather will be. There was still room for souvenirs that you have to pick up while in a foreign country. There's only 1 compartment with internal organization. The others are normal "stuff it until it is full" compartments.
The pack is comfortable, but only when worn as a full backpack - over both shoulders. I found that wearing over one shoulder wasn't comfortable for my 6' frame longer than a few minutes. The straps seemed too wide to me. With both straps on, it was easy to adjust for a perfect and comfortable fit.
I lost about 10 lbs by walking and hiking around Hong Kong & Macau with this pack. It was the primary item when heading out for a day exploring whether it was to the 10,000 Buddha Temple, the Po Lin Monastery, a day of skiing or just a day of shopping in Kowloon, Hong Kong, Atlanta or Denver.
I usually only used half the compartments and created a system where unused compartments had the zipper closed towards the left side and heavily used compartments were closed with the zippers at the top. Don't get me wrong, I've had 3 other backpacks and none of them had enough compartments for my needs. The Odyssey does.
I do admit that I've only carried a 15.5" laptop in it a few times. There is plenty of room so I suspect a 17" laptop could be placed into it too. You'll want a laptop sleeve if you carry a PC (not included). I use an old laptop foam insert. I don't take a full laptop when traveling for pleasure, so read other laptop-centric reviews for this pack if that is your main requirement.
Also, it supports a water reservoir which isn't included, but you can easily make due with bottled water. I'm going to order a reservoir to support day hiking on north Georgia trails.
What would I change?
- more internal slots/pockets to organize smaller items
- include the water reservoir
- 2 fewer large compartments
- add a larger carrying handle - single hand carrying can be awkward
- create a way to strap it to my 20" roller luggage that isn't awkward
Great Backpack for air travel By A227Q5NBR6HN4F on 2006-11-05
I bought this pack as a substitute for bulky roller bags. It works great but if you stuff it to the maximum you may have to compress it down a bit for some overhead racks. The separate compartments give you plenty of flexibility and it will accomodate a shirt folded as received from most laundries. The padding is excellent and the weight distribution makes it very easy to carry.
I will also use this as a day pack for hiking although it has more space than generally needed for this. The organizer section works well to carry cell phone, PDA or any other miscellaneous items.
Construction is excellent and it is versatile enough to accomodate a wide range of uses.Great value at the price charged.
Outstanding Pack - One Happy Customer! By A25I240N9BMJTG on 2007-01-13
I've been a JanSport fan for over 20 years and have owned various backpacks and packs, and I always come back to JanSport. You just can't beat the quality and durability of a JanSport. I have to say without a doubt the Odyssey is an outstanding pack for what it is designed for. It has tons of room, is well thought out, loaded with features, and most importantly, comfortable to wear even fully loaded. I use if for commuting every day and frequent travel for work. I can load it up with my laptop, an extra sweater or light jacket, my portfolio and still have plenty of room for all of those extra things you need when traveling. If you're looking for a high quality pack that's versatile, loaded with features and comfortable, look no further.
Great compartmentalization, a little stress By A35042IWDE456Y on 2007-01-10
Pros:
1.great compartmentalization everything is easy to obtain (if you know where to put it).
2.Lots of room able to put just about everything in it. gym clothes, several text books, laptop, camping gear, etc.
Cons:
1.its bulky, even when nothing is in it, its bulky. if your one who likes to show off your back or want a sense of style this is not the product for you. Tip: to make less bulky, put more stuff in bigger compartments relative to smaller compartment.
2. THe shoulder strap strain resistant doesn't quite work...i'm consider myself an average male, strain works in about 25lbs. if you want less strain i'd go for the Targus or Wenger brands.
Conclusion: if all you want is lots of space to put ur stuff w/o the style involved this product is for you.
Great capacity, holds 17" powerbook By A2PS37J9DH5N9E on 2006-09-17
I needed a replacement for my Targus backpack that I used to haul my 17" powerbook. This pack is lighter, smaller (which is a good thing; the Targus was huge!), yet has as much useful pack space as the Targus. I vastly prefer it; the only question is that of durability, but as my last Jansport pack lasted 5 years and my Targus only lasted 1.5 before blowing a zipper, I'll give Jansport the benefit of the doubt.
Supremely comfortable, two water bottleholders, a bladder slot, and plenty of pockets. Top notch!
- Awesome backpack
     By A3ELXR49KAJIF9 on 2006-11-12
I love my Jansport Odyssey backpack. It has a lot of room and the straps are much more comfortable than any other backpack I have ever owned or tried. I have a lot of very heavy books and this backpack can't be beaten for tranporting books. A little more padding in the straps (or smaller textbooks)would make it perfect, but it is still better than anything I have seen out there. I would highly recommend it to any high school or college student.
- Perfect backpack!
     By A1JV1UPFWETWB1 on 2007-06-27
I had recently purchased the wasabi metro JanSport backpack and loved it. My wife said she wanted something just like it. I then saw the Odyssey and decided to give the wasabi to my wife and move up a notch to the Odyssey. Very well made and worth the money. There are a total of six pockets. The first and second pockets from the front are open storage areas. The third pocket has two mesh zippered pockets inside as well as a sunglasses holder and dividers and slots for things like pens, pencils... as toothbrush and other things. The fourth and fifth pockets are large storage pockets. The sixth and last pocket has a smaller pocket for your iPod and a larger for a hydration system or even more storage depending on what you are using it for. It has waist straps as well as a place to tuck them in when you don't want to use them, which for me is most of the time. It also has a semi firm internal frame for when you really load it down. Good design and MORE than enough storage area without being too big and bulky.
- Excellent pack, especially for students
     By A1ASDBMV3DSE4L on 2007-01-18
Highly recommended!!!! My wife uses this pack for nursing school. As you can imagine she carries A LOT OF "STUFF". This pack makes it a lot lighter on the shoulders than a normal pack would because of the padding in the straps. I would recommend this to anyone who is a student and is looking for a durable pack for school.
- I bought a pack for Africa
     By A3PEGB6NO3HN2Z on 2007-01-21
Bought the pack for a 23 day trip to Africa. I would highly recomend this pack to anyone. Carried on the plane easily stored. Holds any thing you can think to pack with very little stress on your back.
- Best Choice
     By A2REVM8FEL657F on 2007-05-13
This backpack is amazing. If you're looking for something that will take all your stuff, and a few more, then this is the one. We went to Italy last month and I bought it as a diaper bag for our 4months son. It took his stuff (which is a lot), two cameras, 2 bottles and a notebook! It also has a number of adjustments to distribute the load.
- Not for the short
     By A37IRE9GZ0CZ7I on 2007-11-02
Too big for the vertically impaired. I wanted a big bookbag but this is humongous! Great quality as expected from Jansport but at 5'3", it's overwhelming. My husband uses it now.
- Not for tall people
     By AJ00DXOOCDL2C on 2007-11-29
On the down side:
- I'm 5'9" and the straps are too short for me. They yank my arms backwards when I wear the pack which is rather uncomfortable.
- It is poorly made. The little zipper pull ties fall off. I've lost about one a week and have replaced them with safety pins. It's a great punk look, but I'd rather they have designed them to stay on.
On the plus side:
- The waist strap, which I would use every ten or twenty million years, can be folded away, which is a big plus over a lot of comparable models. When the next geological era starts, I'll be ready.
- The stiff backplate is awkward and assumes that you walk with a particular posture. It works like those old fashioned backboards they used to torment debutantes with. Luckily, it can be bent slightly to fit better.
- It is HUGE. The big main compartment can swallow two or three days worth of clothing and toiletries along with 20lbs of Brie de Nangis! (That's three whole wheels of cheese).
- Best Book Backpack
     By A1U4KW6VKMEUIW on 2007-01-10
I have had many backpacks for school and am always left wanting more space. I like to have different places to put different materials. This gives me the opportunity to do so. I like the fact that I can put my Ipod in a section that is not likely to recieve the weight of the many books I use. I would say that the area where you hold the smaller items, such as pens and calculators, is nice. You have dividers where you can hold many different things. Overall, this is the best pack for school I have come across.

     By A3GOSARO17ZA2E on 2007-01-18
I bought this for my daughter to use for college based on previous reviews praising roominess and good support. The backpack is great with lots of different compartments and shoulder and waist straps that really help balance the weight. My daughter is able to carry her laptop, numerous books, gym clothes, and a huge waterbottle to get her through the day.
- Great Back Pack
     By A1LJMUISR7DW8J on 2007-12-24
This bag is awesome. Yes it is big but thats what I wanted.
Here is a list of what I carry daily:
Books and notebooks for two classes
Large calculator
35mm Digital camera w/
300mm zoom lens
Macro lenses
Extra set of office keys (large and bulky)
Sunglasses
All the wires, cables and battery charger for my camera
Misc. other small things
And I still have room for tons more.
If you are looking for a big, durable and comfortable to carry do it all bag, this is the one.
- Perfect for just about everything
     By A3T7XVG3AXJF61 on 2008-02-01
This is the best day hiker backpack I've ever seen. It's HUGE inside with tons of different pockets to stash stuff in. It's got an organizer pocket to hold pens, IPod etc. with a Velcro closure and two zippered mesh pockets. The waist belt can be tucked inside the pack and it's got a pocket for a water bladder. I use this bag as carry on when I fly, as a book bag for class and as a day bag for hiking. Jansport did an awesome job on this bag!

     By A34UPOSKM0B0J7 on 2007-06-08
Great backpack. Plenty of room. Separate compartments to keep things organized. Sturdy.
- Solved my problems
     By A3I4AGHFA4RZ0B on 2007-08-15
I've had this bag a few months now, and its surprising how nuanced backpacks are. I just bought a laptop and, on top of text books, folders, and the lifestyle of a full time worker and full time student, I have to carry a lot of things with me that most people keep at home. This bag lets me organize everything perfectly, it stays clean, and the cushioned straps prevent the loss of circulation I was experiencing with my old bag. I recommend this bag for any college student.
- Great backpack, but somewhat diappointed
     By A3A8B1SDZ9UEM6 on 2007-11-02
Overall the backpack is great, it had some flaws.
Cons: One of the zipper pull straps came off with little pull force when I first got it. Also, the adjustable shoulder straps are very narrow and get tanged easily when you adjust the straps.
Pros: The shoulder straps are very comfortable. Lots of storage space. Very well organized compartments. I also love the way it looks; it does not look like your topical backpack.
Overall great backpack, but I don't feel it's worth $100, because of it's flaws.
- Perfect for my needs.
     By AFWTO432GJ234 on 2007-11-09
This pack is perfect for my needs. I wanted:
* Something large, with multiple compartments.
* Place for iPod.
* Place for a CamelBack water pouch.
* Waist straps available for heavy load, but not invasive for lighter loads. (You can stow them inside.)
* Lots of lashing loops for storing stuff on the outside.
* Lots of holders for things like pens and pencils.
This backpack does it all and more! It also has AirLift cushioning, so it's really comfy. It's the most versatile pack I've seen, functioning equally well for use as a pack at college and as a day/day-and-a-half pack for backpacking.
- Great bag for road warriors & trekkers
     By AVTWN60BBVY9K on 2008-01-18
A great pack! Substantial suspension and airy back padding. Small panel in front. Larger panel in the middle with dividers for office supplies etc. Opposing side of same panel has two mesh pockets. Second middle panel full length for documents/magazines. Great size of main panel with full horseshoe access. Top zipper pocket for small items and hydration bladder that runs the whole dimension of the back pad. Could be used for additional stowage if not using a bladder. Two elastic mesh bottle holders are nicer than one. Great for a weekend (or week if you pack light) away and can easily hold a laptop - but would recommend using a padded sleeve. Actual fabric color (red state) came with darker grey panels and the pack appears more subtle than the contrast in the stock photo.
- Open Wide
     By A2756EF26FDYBX on 2008-03-11
This is a great bag for space. If you have a lot to pack and are resourceful, then you can find many uses for a bag like this. One thing I wish it had was a built in rain-fly. Or one could just buy a backpack cover from REI that would be sufficient.

     By A1AXAU9UCDNP4K on 2006-08-24
Great daypack with ample space and plenty of pockets. The ability to accomodate a hydration bladder is a nice feature for hiking and the padding on the shoulder straps is excellent. This back pack is versatile and comfortable.
- Great Daypack!!!!!

This is the best, Jansport has always made an outstanding product. This is the third one I have owned. Plenty of room and just right size.
- One word, versatile!
     By A7TLRTZGTH6V8 on 2007-01-03
I use it a lot for hauling stuff around work. Lots of compartments. It holds a lot of networking tools, patch cables, pens, paper, books, and laptop. Love the top pocket near the handle. Keep my cell phone and MP3 player in it for easy access. It has, but i don't use it, a camelbak hanger built in. Very neat. Great for long trek's. I also use it as carry on luggage when flying. Able to keep lots of things easily accessible. Food, games, books, etc. Overall i could not be happier. Great backpack, wouldn't trade it for any other! Versatile!
- Great Daypack and academic bag
     By A13RTS0X4VD7Q7 on 2008-01-31
I received this daypack for Christmas (as did my fiance). We are both avid dayhikers, and both in school. This bag carries everything that we need, from basic survival necessities to camera supplies. Plus, I have yet to overload this bag when loading all of my school books in it. I wish I had known about this bag sooner, I would not have wasted money on a bag that was specific for each of my purchases.
- excellent backpack
     By AAC4ZSN930VCL on 2008-02-22
This backback provides more than enough space for my 8th grader who carries loads of books and binders daily. Best buy on a backpack I have found yet.
- JanSport Odyssey
     By A23V5CY9R2VIC6 on 2008-03-26
This is my second JanSport Odyssey bag, I used my backpack through 4 years of college and now I bought this one for my wife who is starting college this spring. This bag is perfect for school; it has enough compartments to hold books and binders for 3 classes. It has a compartment that holds enough pencils and pens to last you the whole year. It also has pockets to hold water bottles, your cell phone, and your lunch. I am still using my backpack to commute via bus and ferry to work. I highly recommend this backpack for anyone who is going to school. Hope this helps.
- Buy only the JanSport Odyssey Backpack for Middle School and up!
     By ATKLS3CKDFH4Y on 2008-05-10
This is the second JanSport Odyssey Backpack I've purchased online. Now both my high school age sons have one. It is the best model to protect their backs as it provides the largest available volume for their numerous heavy books. No sign of wear or zipper breakage in the one the oldest son has had for 1 1/2 yrs. I'm sure they'll be going to college with them! Be smart and start you kids in middle school with this backpack and don't waste your money on any other!
