Be skeptical of blank DVD reviews based on a single batch By A37EHPTCJZSKYW on 2006-04-03
Over the last six months I've burned well over 400 DVD's. While I've also used Verbatim, Fuji and TDK, the majority were Memorex. I've had one bad spindle of Memorex DVD-9's in which most couldn't even be recognized by the drive, and in general, about 1 in 20 DVD5's don't verify. My experience doesn't prove that Memorex is the best brand, but any manufacture process can have a bad run, and I won't pass a brand up just because someone else bought one bad spindle. Memorex isn't perfect, but I haven't seen a brand yet I'd give 5 stars, and they're at least as good as anything else I've tried.
A few observations - the combination of PC, drive and media can make a big difference. Some of the OEM drives that come with bargain PC's are just junk, and even good drives can be finicky. I use mostly Sony DRU 810A's, which are currently less than $60. This gives great results in a Gateway, but is less reliable for some reason in an eMachines - you get what you pay for. You're also far safer leaving the pc alone while it's burning DVD's - the faster the burn speed, the more true this is. I have yet to see an old-fashioned "buffer underrun" message, but the error rate is consistently higher if the machine is distracted while it's burning.
Just because the ads make DVD burning look simple and bullet proof, doesn't mean it is. Go slow - buy a few small batches of different brands, and *really* test them. Find out what brands your burner maker recommends, but don't take that as the last word. Sony does not like Memorex, but I just bought another 400, because only your own experience - and not somebody else's bad luck - is going to tell you what brand is best for you.
WARNING MEMOREX DVDS HAVE NO LASTING LIFE By AHMVD393UEMHG on 2005-04-08
I had no problems burning to these discs, its when I went back a few months later to these discs and found out that none of them work anymore. After further research I found out that Memorex uses the cheapest dye available and thus the DVDs have absolutelly no life to them, my discs started dying after a few months.
In addition, in you physically hold the disc in your hands you can feel how warped physically it has become. This is true for all the discs (about 150 of them). I CAN NOT NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT STRONLY ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
quite all right by me !!! By A2R6RA8FRBS608 on 2008-06-06
CAUTION: MAKE SURE YOUR COMPUTER CAN WORK WITH DVD+R MEDIA BEFORE BUYING THIS--SOME OLDER COMPUTERS MAY NOT RECOGNIZE THIS TYPE OF BLANK DVD MEDIA
Memorex makes a very reliable blank DVD+R that can handle up to 4.7 GB of data. Moreover, these blank DVD+Rs are capable of recording data at speeds up to 16x. The data I record onto these lasts for years, proving the test of time. I have used these as data discs, discs to record video and discs to record video. Great!
The DVD+R discs are compact and easy to store. While the discs are still blank, store them in the circular case on the spindle that they came in. After your burn data onto them, I would recommend storing them in slim jewel cases instead of paper sleeves. It's just better protection for your DVD+Rs that have data stored on them. Don't store these discs, burnt or blank, in rooms that become very hot; this causes damage to any brand of this type of disc and you could lose data over time.
There are two caveats that many other people note about any brand of this product: when you are burning the data onto the blank disc, don't be surprised if you see that the data is burning at a rate slower than 16x. This can happen if your burner doesn't have the capacity to burn faster, or it may be a quirk. I am not a professional so I cannot be certain of precisely what causes this phenomenon; but I assure you that the extra minute or two (tops) that you wait to get your DVD+R completed is worth the wait. In addition, DON'T write on these using Sharpie ink pens. The ink can seep through the top coating of the DVD+R disc and slowly but surely compromise your data--and you wouldn't want that, now would you? If you need to label the discs, label its' jewel case using a post-it note.
Overall, Memorex blank DVD+R discs store data reliably over the years and I believe that an extra minute to burn the data onto the blank disc is well worth it in the event that it doesn't actually burn at 16x.
Memorex is far better than any other brand By A19HQLSASQOUP4 on 2005-09-10
How this only has a single star is beyond me. I burn a lot of DVD's and Memorex is the only brand I use. Best quality, period. I've used other brands and for some reason the just don't come out right. Personal preference, but there is just certain things you stick with if they work right the first time.
No problems- good media By A2RYKYCG4X0S85 on 2006-04-09
Do NOT read the reviews and think that they are completely accurate or from people that know what they're doing... i have purchased 4 spindles of these Memorex 100packs 16x DVD+r's and have not had any problems- if you know what you're doing and use the right software, you'll be fine. batches of dvd's can occasionally be defective, but over the course of a few hundred dvd's i have not had any problems- these are a quality product and if those other reviewers wanted their money back, i'm sure memorex would give it to them no questions asked....
- Unstable over 4x , don't even try 16x
     By A2MD6U2IGDIK0U on 2007-02-07
I bought a batch of these from Comp USA. When I first started burning DVD's I used Memorex. I've since switched to Verbatim & Fuji but these were on sale so I gave them a try. I guess I should have checked the first DVD but since I used Memorex before and didn't get any errors I assumed everything was OK. I burned over 30 before something caused me to check one and sure enough it didn't work. When I checked the other 30+ plus I burned they didn't work either. It was obvious then what the problem was. I tried several at different speeds and 4x was the fastest speed I could reliably burn at. I use an NEC 3450a 16x DVD burner and I know not all discs will burn at maximum listed speed but this is too big a gap. I'm sticking with Verbatim.
- Not a single good disk
     By A2V4YQKUBJF3RV on 2005-04-21
I bought several hundred Memorex 4x DVD+Rs over the past year and they worked fine. I went to re-order and Amazon was out, so I bought the Memorex 8x DVD+R instead.
PURE JUNK !!!
I've tried over a dozen and haven't gotten a single usable disk yet. I've used at least 5 different computers with 8x or higher burners. A total waste of money.
- They Should Be Ashamed
     By A4EEYIIS2GSBG on 2008-02-05
I have never ever given a 1 star rating to any product before as far as I can recall, but this baby deserves it; if I could give a zero I would.
I bought 4 of these 100 pack spindles. Everyone of them dont work, not even one. You can tell by the amount of disks that I ordered that I am no novice when it comes to making DVD's.
I have tried these with 3 different burners and all of them give the same result. Dont get me wrong the burn process went fine, but after years of burning and going back to copy something you burnt earlier and cant copy them because of disk error you come to realise that a "succesful burn" does not mean that it was done right.
This is why I started to chose the 'Verify After Burn' method. This process ensures that what is burnt is actually an exact replica of what you wanted to backup. I did this process with these disks and all of them had no problems in the burn process but everyone of them FAILED the verify process, and I do mean all of them.
Like I said I used 3 different computers with 3 different burners and all failed. I even used 3 different softwares (DVD Decrypter, Nero and Roxio) and all failed. I tried some other DVD's I had and they burned fine and verified perfectly.
These disks are utter Crap and I will never use memorex again. I used them before but to varying degrees of sucess but never as catastrophic as this. Oh and by the way I even took some disks from the middle of the stack and same results.
It is just inexcusable for me to have 400 of these coasters and ever consider buying that brand again. What a waste it is for me; especially scince i live in the Bahamas and the cost to send them back to amazon is going to be almost as than buying them again.
I hope this review helps someone, sometimes low price means just downright LOW in the approach to quality.

I only use memorex discs and have never had a problem with them .
- Memorex DVD+R 16x 4.7GB
     By A2H0TSDT6E3FHZ on 2006-07-25
I've never had a problem with these discs. I have always used Memorex since the 4x days and they have never failed me.
- dissapointing
     By A1563V9QLJ50WR on 2006-10-13
I record dvd movies as a hobby and am always looking for better media, software etc.- I'd been using Ridata for some time w/ next to no coasters but figured I'd upgrade and go with memorex this time around. Big mistake. They skip, pixelate and freeze up. I have had to recopy at least 5 out of the last dozen or so movies I've done. Were it a compatibility issue I could understand, but it appears to be strictly a problem with the quality of the media. I'm going back to using my cheap disks!
The lesson here is: " If it works, dont fix it!"
- WARNING!!! This product 50% defected
     By A5EB1Y1M5QHLY on 2006-02-16
I usually don't post any reviews from purchases I have made, but I must warn everybody of these Memorex DVD's. I purchase these thinking it was a great deal $29.99 for a bundle of 100. As of now I have use 20 of them, were 11 of them have been defected after I've gone back to look at them. So at this rate I'm about to received 50 good DVD's and 50 coasters. These DVD's do burn fast at 16X, however, what does it matter if there defected, it's just wasting my time. I also bought the "Verbatim DVD+R 4.7GB 8X DataLifePlus White Inkjet Printable." I've use 12 of these, and quality is superb, and NO COASTER here. A little slower, but at least it is not wasting my time.
- Terrible Discs!!!
     By A2HGY8JP2F864O on 2006-03-04
I have used TDK and Verbatim discs with no problems. With these discs I only get about 50% that pass verify! And who knows how long they last????
Stay Away..I will!!!
- Buyer Beware
     By A4SF7Z3L5YJ1Y on 2008-01-29
I have burned Maxell, Verbatim, TDK and Memorex DVD+-R's and Verbatim DVD+R DL's. The only brand that has made my burner malfunction in addition to resulting in wasted time and media has been Memorex. My system is a 18 months old, a fairly powerful Windows XP Dell desktop, with a very good Sony burner.
- pricing on dvd+r's
     By A1BB46RSC55FI0 on 2006-03-26
The orginal value of the dvd's are seriously wrong. You can go to Wal-Mart and buy the same dvd+r for less the price they are selling them for.
False advertising of this products orgingal product. The pricing of these dvd+r's are orginally $48.99 not $99.00. SALE IS NOT REALLY REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Why Pay More!?
     By A2D4HAM5K3JATI on 2006-07-02
Listen to Michael Brumley, he knows his stuff. This DVD burning isn't as cut and dried as some would like you to believe. However, just because you get a bad burn doesn't mean it is the discs. There is a whole bunch of stuff going on in your computer that can affect the burn.
I have a Dell 1.2 ghz, with a Lite-On 8x drive, running Nero 6 OEM. Pretty generic, but these Memorex 8x and now 16x discs burn just fine. In fact, I have burnt about 600-800 of these discs and have had very few fall-outs. Not enough to justify buying the "better" quality discs.
Now for the caveat: I did have one spate of problems, caused by a not so well behaved antivirus program. I tossed out the antivirus program and went over to Avast!(it's free, check with Microsoft). Problem solved even though I run Winamp and a logging environmental sampling program while burning discs.
We burn hundreds of discs for a hospital lecture series. They are being played on all sorts of equipment, including some pretty banged up junk. So far I have not received one complaint about the discs only suggestions about the content.
Michael Brumley is right! Before you spend big bucks on some "better" disc, pop up your task manager in XP and see if there is some runaway task that needs some discipline. Also, if you must run "better" discs then do a surface test in Nero. I bet the "better" disc will look very close to failure if the Memorex failed.
- Great DVDs at a great price
     By A2INKDQQSKTISU on 2006-07-03
I have been using Memorex Blank DVDs for years, DVD+R, DVD-R, and DVD+RW, and have yet to have burned a coaster that wasn't either my fault or that of my burning software. I have no problems viewing DVDs that I have authored in any DVD player.
I am using a Dell 1.5ghz machine running Windows 2000 Pro, with a Plextor PX-712A DVD burner. Initially, I was using Roxio for burning, but it is junk and doesn't play well with other software on my hard drive, so I switched to Nero 7, with which I have had no problems.
- Great product, worth the price.
     By A3W1FNZ1U33DW3 on 2006-07-31
The Memorex DVD+R 16x discs are great. I have a LaCie external 16x burner that I use with my mac and I have not yet burned a bad disc. I would reccommend this product to anyone looking for lots of media for a good price.
- No problems with these disks.
     By A2XCU4OIALMVDS on 2006-11-04
I have had no problem using these disks. I have bought several packs and all disks seem to work and have been great in transferring home movies, doing computer backups, etc.
- 100 Pack Memorex DVD+R
     By A3ALFX1TLO6KPU on 2006-11-08
Not a coaster in the bunch. I started using these a year back and have stuck with a winner. I won't buy anything else. And a bargain at that too!
- Don't buy these.
     By A16R1CGBOJ2W6U on 2006-11-28
I used these DVDs to back up about 60 of my movies, and now when I try to play them back about 1/3 are faulty and stop playing. I am going to try Verbatim next, which at this time on special are only about $10 more expensive than Memorex.
- Memorex DVD+R 16x 4.7GB 100 Pack Spindle
     By A3R56NLEP46E0I on 2007-01-16
I purchased the above item as a Christmas gift for my son. When I received it, the package was opened and the plastic cover was broken and a piece of the plastic was chipped off and missing. Since I didn't have time to replace it before Christmas, I went ahead and gave it to my son anyway. If it had been purchased for anyone else, or if I had had more time, and if the shipping charges weren't so expensive, I would have returned it for a replacement. I was not at all satisfied with this purchase. I have not checked with my son to see if the DVDs worked properly.
- Never had any problems
     By AGLSPVC2DFBR1 on 2007-02-11
It's kind of dorky to rate media like this because we won't know for maybe five years whether it is long-lasting. But I've never had any burn problems with these, so for the short term they seem fine.
- The Best DVD+Rs I've Found and Reasonably Priced Too
     By A2G162637O8HEJ on 2007-03-31
I use these DVDs exclusively and just love them. I can go through a couple of spindles before getting a bad disc error. I only bought them the first time because they were on sale at my local Fry's, but I had such good results that I now buy them no matter what the price and am not tempted by sales of other brands.
- Great product!
     By A3OQHS152OE6WY on 2007-05-13
I have tried just about every brand of dvd's. This is by far the best, great price, too!
- Amazon is great
     By A38YL349DDGQXV on 2007-05-14
There was a problem with my initial shipment. I contacted Amazon and they corrected the error promptly. I love Amazon, they are fair and seek to please their customers. I'll continue to shop here.
- Sloppy handling makes for a poor buying experience
     By ABKNRVFFLEA3M on 2008-06-10
I have to say, the discs are great. Never a problem and quick to copy.
That being said, it appears that no matter which brand of balnk DVD or CD I purchase from Amazon, they are ALWAYS poorly packed resulting in destroyed "hatbox containers" and sometimes discs even loose in the box. I have written to customer service, but if this continues (as it has for about the last year) I'm going to give up a few bucks savings here and turn to local retailers. I'm sure some of the blame can be laid at UPS's doorstep, but if theye were packed right, I don't believe the problem would be so overarching.
- BAD PRODUCT
     By A28OVZG7B0W2MU on 2006-04-03
WE ARCHIVED OVER 180 NEWS STORIES ON MEMOREX DVD'S. THE NEXT DAY THEY WOULD NOT READ AT ALL. ACCIDENTLY SOME TDK'S GOT MIXED IN AND THEY WORK GREAT. I SAW THE REVIEW ON THE QUALITY OF THIS PRODUCT BUT SINCE BEEN USING MEMOREX PRODUCTS FOR YEARS I IGNORED IT. MY MISTAKE. WHEN EMAILED MEMOREX THEY SUGGEST TRY BADCOPY FROM DIGITAL RIVER TO FIX IT, WELL IT DIDNT WORK EITHER.
- memorex are the worst!
     By AWXS6XNDV601P on 2006-06-20
yes, they really are the worst. i have used many, many different brands and speed dvdr's, but memorex are terrible! i'd say 1/2 -2/3 of the packs are coasters. save your money, don't buy memorex. try tdk or verbaim instead.
- Bad item
     By AZJ7MQLZBKCK5 on 2006-11-03
I do not like this item because it says it is a 16x DVD but when I put it in my burner it only reads it as 4x. Something is wrong with the DVDs because my burner is one of the newest out there and it is a 16x burner. So if you are looking for 16x, do not buy this one!
