  • I really wanted to like it

    By A1H1V809FZU3Y8 on 2006-03-20
I wanted a robotic pet for our busy family, so I bought the original RoboSapien when it first came out. Though we had a lot of fun with it, it lacked autonomy (the ability to do things on its own). Robopet promised that, so I bought that next for my family. It looked promising!

At first, it was immensely fun. It seemed to deliver on its promises. It could roll over, sit up and beg, and scampered about as it explored its environment without running into anything. However, I was disappointed with the fact that it had trouble on a threshhold (the raised part where one floor type changes to another floor type), and could easily get itself stuck in a corner with only one or two obsticals. Oddly, uneven and soft surfaces posed a great challenge; one would assume that a walking robot with four legs ought to be able to walk on anything, but robopet needed a hard, flat surface. Also, I questioned the durability of this 'bot.

Now, I'm not sure if it's something that happened when it fell 6" to the floor after backing away from a wall, or if it was a defect, but mine started locking up whenever I used it in edge detection mode. Nothing takes the fun out faster than when this 'bot freezes in some odd pose and becomes completely unresponsive until it's reset; this after only a couple of minutes of play.

I did some research on my problem, and discovered other durability and quality issues. Apparently, the gears inside are made out of cheap plastic and are prone to stripping. The legs aren't very strong at all and they are also prone to breaking. This wouldn't be that big of a deal if spare parts were readily available, cheap, and easy to replace, but this is not the case.

I'm sorry, but a robotic pet needs to be reasonably durable. If it walks, then it needs to be able to walk on grass, carpet, gravel...and finally, it ought to be able to tell you when it's "Hungry" (low battery power) at the very least. If you want to get into the world of robotics, I suggest one of the many good kits, and if you're in the market for a cheap robotic pet, wait a little longer. Robopet does come close, but we're not quite there yet.

  • More Fun Than the 1st generation RoboSapien

    By ABLDVZVC54CU2 on 2005-12-31
Grandpa got another robot for our boys. Well this time they had played with it longer and had more fun than with the RoboSapien they got last time. I guess the RoboSapien was still a bit too complex for them and they just liked the demo mode. But this RoboPet is truly fun to play with. BTW even my wife's Grandma loved it soo much she ordered one as she can not have a pet at the place she lives now. You might find this would work as social robot for elderly as well. One thought about the price, I would wait until the price drops at or below $50. The current price now is too much for what it is IMHO.

  • So litttle funtions!

    By on 2005-11-25
I bought this toy. It was cool but the next 3 days I saw the same robopet in [...]. It had 18 funtions and only $89.95. But this is still cool. But just in case you want more funtions go to that website.

  • Tons Of Fun

I tryed this with friends and in stores it is soooooo much fun! I may have pets already but this is east to take care of no messes,no taking it out on walks,or watching after it every mintue! I love my pets so much but I really like this and I would say to any child who doesn't have a pet "This is the one for you,it is easy and fun!".

  • This is a great toy!

    By A1XBJ23D8INVP6 on 2006-03-18
This does everything it's supposed to--lots of cool tricks, no trouble walking on carpets or hard floors, etc. It's not too noisy (just noisy enough to entertain kids), and the programming is very clever. My 10 year old has the patience to read the directions; my 6 year old just pushes buttons and enjoys himself. My kids think it's "awesome!" I'm glad the price was reduced, but it's definitely worth $70 (including shipping).

  • Wowwee, youve done it agian!

This is the ultimate pet. No messes, trainible, and fun! I dont have it, i just saw others playing with it at a store. In that store is the new Robosapien V2. V2 acually made this guy do tricks! And even better, my little brother told it to sit. It sat! I can asure endless hours of playing when he gets it for christmas. Again, GET THIS TOY! IT IS BETTER THAN A TOY!

  • thumbs down!
    By on 2005-11-25
This thing has no fun,no educational value, breaks easily, and of course dumb. It's not even worth 1 star. I extreamly positivly don't recommend it.

  • More fun than we expected
    By A1REV7VUPJ3K4L on 2005-12-28
I saw that quite a few of the reviews here were written by kids who may not have read the Robopet instruction book so I thought I'd chime in. We bought this for my 12-year-old daughter because her brother was getting the Robosapien V2 and we didn't want her left out. I thought it would be a quick diversion, interact with the V2, and then wind up on a shelf in her room. Instead, it was the hit of our extended family Christmas eve because the adults loved it too. It has many more abilities than I thought it would and has proven durable (kicked accidentally across the floor a few times). I would say those who are having trouble with it haven't read the manual. Sometimes it's SUPPOSED to refuse a command--that's part of its personality. This is a fun toy...but probably not for the under-6 set.

  • my nephew loved this
    By A3IF1QSLQ4E5M2 on 2006-03-13
My 6 year old nephew got this for his birthday after he got the dinopet for Christmas and he loves them both! This is so funny it even acts like it is peeing! This is a pet I can handle we all love it!

  • Robo Pet
    By A2WX865SV9T0TA on 2005-12-29
I am 32 and I got one from my parents for Christmas. It's definatly not for kids under 8. Robopet has thin legs, has some trouble walking on carpet and my carpet isn't thick like my parents. If it walks extensively, like after 5 minutes of actual play, it tends to wobble too much. It doesn't work well in small spaces. Robopet will take several seconds of walking into something that isn't quite it's height to stop going forward. Because of this, I am too afraid to have it on a table like shown on TV. If it gets used to your voice and you say 'good boy' often enough after a command, it will listen to you more often and do somethings you ask like howl on command. For someone who has a dog, this item may not impress them unless they are a robotic's freak like we are. We only have cats. After I got used to robopet a little more I had it walking after our cats. My husband's cat got growled at by the thing. Robopet will turn itself off after a while. I've had to flip the switch back on underneith, not by remote to get it to keep going. The remote won't always successfully put it to sleep like the manual says. It will do movements like in the book, as well as pretend to piss on the carpet, howl randomly, bark often. If you set it to friendly mode it just sits and shakes it's head like it's about to fall off. In anger mode it'll shake it's body like it's trying to hop and growl at what ever is infront of it (even nothing is infront). One time I was trying to figure out what the toy was going to do, and it tried to do a half flip backwards. My husband didn't believe me that it tried to do a complete flip. I'm hoping it won't do it again, too afraid it'll knock it's own head off. Don't let a child who won't listen play with this toy. I have two kids and neither are old enough yet to be allowed near it unless they watch it do things without touching it. My oldest wont listen yet and my youngest is too young and she likes to throw things. I've heard stories where the legs will break off too easily on Robopet. That is why I got my kids the 'scamps' robotic dog. If they break that I wont have a heart attack :)

  • Best Toy Everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I just got robopet last week and I have been playin with it endlessly.I love how it breaks wind, relief, play dead, and roll over. Also Wowwee is the bomb.

  • Neat
    By on 2005-11-24
Well I don't have it yet. I got a downloaded copy of the manual. It looks great once you get a download of the manual. There is one problem it doesn't have many functions. One really cool thing is interaction with Robosapien V2.

  • My son loves this raptor

We bought this toy for my 6 year old son he loves it he keep it truned on at night to scare the mosters away

  • Way Cool
    By A2MNFR8XKA8G5 on 2005-12-30
It's like he is a real dog!!! This toy, I mean pet, is great!! The only problem is that Robo Pet is rather loud, and sometimes when I play with it, my parents get a little mad because it is fun, but it makes a lot of noise, but I don't regret it, even though $80 is an outrageous price for this, but it is still awesome.
    Soooooooooo, go ahead.
    Buy it!!!

  • My robopet is very cool!!!
    By on 2005-12-25
Robopet is a fun and interactive robot dog.
Me and my friend had so much fun with him.
When i went to the store he looked, waved and
barking meaning it's saying Hello. He always
likes to follow my hand. When i clap he comes
to me then stops and barks. Plus it has guard
dog mode so when i leave my room and someone
goes to my room it makes a lot of noise. It would
be better if he was voice activated. I did teach him
new tricks. He jumped then flipped backwards.
I like to train him. Do not buy this for kids that
play rough because it is very fragile. My
favorite trick is when he rolls himself over.
And that's good that he can get back up and
sense walls or edges or that would be a problem.

For the other reviews i think the robopet's leg was broken maybe because it was defective. I don't understand those people that say their robopet does not work. Mine works perfectly and works how it was told. Mine works on anything i put it on except the bed.

  • Cool toy, But has some durability problems.
    By A36AR3A0UNZRQU on 2006-11-30
It is a really cool toy if the price is at this level, not the original WOWEE retail. It can act like a real dog although it can only show routined action. It walks well on a typical carpet floor - It is 4-legged toy!!! - So its walking ability is best among all WOWWEE robots. Only Robosapien can be equal to this toy for walking ability. Neither RR, nor RS V2(RRep) can walk better than robopet.

In addition, its articulated leg structure is a fun itself! Maybe Zoids can only match with it in that viewpoint. Of course its walking motion is more realistic than zoids.

Durability problem lies in the fatigue failure of the plastic grip of a spring in rear legs. This spring is needed to recover rear leg to its original position when the robopet shakes his leg for the trick #9. The problem is that its grip made of plastic is too weak. When you have played robopet for a long time, check this problem and remove the spring when its grip is broken.

  • Cool toy

This toy is awesome. It does just about everything you tell it to. It's not too loud so your parents don't complain about it. I really like it. My mom typed this for me.

  • Recommended to Everyone!!!!!!!!
    By on 2006-09-21
As thrilled as I was when I bought the Roboraptor, I decided to buy the Robopet. At first, I was a little skeptical about the purchase because I hadn't gotten to research it yet, but I agreed to give it a chance. When my dad and I tried it out, it was better than I thought it would be! Even my little sister loves it! I would definitely recommend it to everyone, especially robot freaks like myself. Enjoy!

  • For better performance, better batteries are needed.
    By A318CAKSVT7UWF on 2006-12-31
I got this at a local Discovery Channel store for $41.97. The first one I got had a broken rear leg. Robopet just shutdown itself couple minutes after I activated it because it couldn't turn over and stand up. After I examed it I found the parts is detached from the motor. I went back to the store and exhchange for a new one. The new one has 4 black chips that scure the leg parts and prevent the parts from detaching from the motors. Obviously the first one is defective...lacks of parts.
Before I got the robopet I've heard that batteries affect the performance a lot. I went to Frys and got 2 different kinds of batteries, ACDelco Super Alkaline and eneloop rechargeable by Sanyo and GE, to test out. I was very dissapointed on the performance after using ACDelco. What happened is Robopet had problem turnover and standup after it did the rollover trick. Then I used eneloop batteries. The performance improved but still... Robopet had to try like 3 times to stand up, sometimes shutdown itself, and had problem making turns on the carpet. But the performance is OK when it's on hard floor. I can tell the waist of Robopet was weak from the sound of the motor...dying sound. I thought I got a defect one again or Robopet doesn't perform well on carpet at all. I decided to try the old batteries, Sony CycleEngery, that I use for my mp3 palyer. The performance is owesome. Now robopet makes turns rollover nicely even on the soft thick carpet.
At beginning I thought Robopet's sensors were not working very well since it kept bumpping into walls and walking against the wall. Then I found that if the light is bright enough Robopet reacts very well.
Some maybe said that it's made of cheap parts. But I think for about $42 it's totally worth it. Sony Aibo costs more than $500.
I am gonna order the Roboreptile from Amazon. I can't wait to receive RV2 next Tuesday.
I would suggest exam the products right after you purchase since missing parts, 4 parts, is a very riduculous thing that could happen. And they assert that each product is tested before they ship it.

  • Don't Waste Your Hard Earned Dollars on the Robo Pet
    By A1CG54ZT15SO70 on 2007-01-16
My 7 y o son learned first hand this year that marketing a product (TV) is what sells this item. He said, "I thought the Robo Pet would do more cool things on its own like a real dog....but it is really dumb". If anything, he learned a good lesson about what you see on TV is not what the true reality of the product when you get it home.

  • This toy does not work at all
    By AQ2FP5LTJTNFZ on 2007-01-21
This toy does not work at all. It does not roll over, it does not walk forward, barely walks backward, and the laser wandering feature does not work. We put in brand new batteries in both the toy and the remote, and it did not change a thing. This toy has sat on the hearth ever since Christmas, almost completely unused. Unfortunately, we are unable to return it to Amazon as we threw away the packaging, and the only response we get from Amazon is a form-type email that we cannot respond to. Do not waste your money.
